1 Lions Club International District 4-C4 Region Three, Zone One Daly City Host Lions Club Chartered February 26, 1941 President s Message: Lion President Don Fleming Well, May is almost here and we begin to see the effects of the rain. Lots of flowers and warmer weather. We can be outside with a more positive attitude and get ready to celebrate numerous holidays, Cinco de Mayo, Mother s Day and Memorial Day. As we get out more we need to think of energizing our Lions Club with better participation and new members. As a service club we need members who are active and willing to work for the benefit of our community. It is important for all of us to be thinking of additional things we can do to improve our community. We need everyone to help build a better club. Remember to participate in our efforts to grow and improve the Daly City Host Lions club. MEMBERSHIP MEETING CANCELLED The May 15th Membership Meeting has been cancelled to allow Daly City Host Lions to attend North Peninsula Food Pantry s Thanks for Taking Our Hand Luncheon at Colma Community Center from 12 to 1. Daly City Host Lions have a special price of $15.00 per Lion 50%. Please support this fundraising event as part of LCI Global Initiative to fight hunger and because your help is always needed. Details are on the flyer on page 11. 2 Meet your Fellow Lions! Each month we will be featuring Daly City Host Lions club members in a column titled Meet you Fellow Lions. This month we are featuring Lion Bob O Donnell! Jackie and I have lived in Pacifica since 1973, where we raised our three children. We now have four grandchildren, 17, 13, 10, and 7 who bring us great enjoyment. I joined the Daly City Fire Department in 1972 as a Firefighter and retired in 2002 as Fire Chief and will always be very grateful for my career. I have been a Daly City Host Lion for 20 years, though I am inactive now because of other volunteer commitments including the National Maritime Museum at Hyde St. Pier in San Francisco. Where did you grow up? San Francisco, West Portal District, the 3rd of six children in an Irish American family Where did you go to school (high school/college)? St. Cecilia Grammar School, Archbishop Riordan High School, City College, San Francisco State University INVITE A GUEST The first membership meeting of each month is our Invite a Guest Meeting. Anyone who speaks truth to power What is your favorite song? 'I Dreamed A Dream", from Les Miles What is your favorite movie? Casablanca The latest movie you have seen? Darkest Hour. I enjoy history and it was a great interpretation of Winston Churchill during the gathering storm of World War II Favorite Sound? The gurgling of a trout stream Least Favorite Sound? An unattended car alarm Bob with wife Jackie. Favorite Childhood Memory? Christmas morning with the family around the tree, presents being opened and the electric train running around the tree stand Favorite thing to do in spare time? I enjoy photography, and woodworking, and gardening What is your Favorite food? All things Italian. Some say my last name should be Odinelli! What is your Favorite drink? Any libation shared with friends What is your Favorite vacation spot? Our cabin in the Sierras Farthest you have been away from home? The Cape of Good Hope, South Africa If You could do anything for a day what would it be? Count my blessings, express gratitude for all that I have been given, and savor my family and friends. And maybe finish with an Italian dinner and some good wine. 2

On her recent vacation Lion Kikei Wong took this photo at Victoria Peak, which is the highest mountain on Hong Kong Island. The view from the observation area offers a beautiful panoramic view of the city. At one of the observation areas, I found this archway with the Lions International symbol. The text underneath states that this monument/plaque was dedicated on 2/28/1975 to the Lions Club of Tai Ping Shan (the Cantonese name for Victoria Peak, literally translating to "pacific mountain peak" or "mountain peak of great peace"). The four large characters in the middle of the bottom plaque say the foundation is set forever which I think is wishing a good start/foundation to either the club or the monument. Next to the Lions Club International Symbol says Tai Ping Shan Lions Club. 4 Pasta Bingo was a huge success! Daly City Host Lions raised over $2,000 and hosted over 100 attendees. As you can see everyone had a great time. Especially the kitchen crew. A big Thank You to everyone who helped out at the event, we could not have done it with out you! 4

7 Daly City Host Lions Recycling Opportunities Don Riker Recycling Fund Bring your cans and bottles to the second meeting each month or contact Lion Ed Dollard to arrange pick up. Turn in at your local recycling center and donate the money to the fund. Bread Tags for Wheelchairs Don t throw the little plastic tag from your bread bags away bring them to Lion Secretary Denise Kelly. The Leos in District 4-C4 are collecting them for Danielle Cares for Chairs (an organization recycling bread tags for the purchase of wheelchairs). Cancelled Stamps for Easter Seals Cut the stamps off the envelope(s) and please make sure to include the postmark. Bring the stamps to any club meeting and we will send them to Easter Seals. Easter Seals makes lots of money selling them to philatelists worldwide. Pull Tabs Before you recycle your beverage can, remove the pull tab. Bring the pull tabs to any club meeting or event. Tabs will be forwarded to Fresno Host Lions Club for Ronald MacDonald House. Empty Ink Jet Cartridges Bring them to any club meeting or event. Let Lion Secretary Denise Kelly know which Lions organization you are donating to (Student Speaker Foundation, Lions Veterans Charities, etc.) and they will be forwarded. Vehicle Donations Contact Lion Ed Dollard to donate your unwanted vehicle. This is joint project with St. Vincent de Paul Society. Keys for Sight Bring your old keys to any club meeting and they will be recycled for our White Cane Fund. 7

To Remember that in building up my business it is not necessary to tear down another's; to be loyal to my clients or customers and true to myself. To Be Careful with my criticism and liberal with my praise; to build up and not destroy.
