1 Surfside United Methodist Church A Real Leap of Faith October, 2015 I once heard a sermon entitled Adventurous Living through Adventurous Giving. This sermon challenged me and my family to take a real leap of faith concerning our own financial stewardship to our church. Cara and I were a young couple with two young children, a brand new house payment, a brand new car payment, and all the other expenses that go along with living life. Cara and I had decided before we married that her being home to raise our children was very important to us, SO we were also a one-income family! My experience in giving to my church at this point was: I will give to the church AFTER all the bills are paid. And it always happened that very little was left for the church at the end of the month. I wasn t really concerned about my giving to the church because I knew that there were many other members who were capable of making up my deficit. I wasn t concerned, UNTIL I came to truly understand that part of my being a REAL Christian in this world meant that I was to live my life according to God s commands, which are found in His Word, the Bible. It was during a fall stewardship campaign at my church, that members of the stewardship committee presented the Step Up to Tithing Program. They explained how God, through Scripture, calls all his children to give back to Him a tithe (one-tenth of any property, produce, or income) in Thanksgiving for God s blessings. The committee acknowledged the concern, and reality of personal debt, responsibility to provide for family, health costs, etc. BUT they also helped the congregation to understand that tithing is a true leap of faith. Tithing is giving to God the first, and best, of all that we reap in blessing from Him. Concerning tithing, I had it all backwards. I was giving to God what was left over, instead of trusting Him to provide enough for me to give to Him, and to pay my bills. The committee proposed that we Step Up in our financial giving by a few percent each year, over a five year period, until we were giving ten percent of our gross income. Cara and I talked (and PRAYED) about our situation. We decided to increase our giving to three percent of our gross income. As soon as I got paid, the first check we wrote was to our church. To our amazement, we never missed the extra giving, and always paid our bills on time. The next year, we committed to give five percent of our gross income. And again, we were amazed at God s faithfulness. The third year, Cara and I had come to the realization that God was calling us to trust Him completely, and to go ahead and tithe the full ten percent. We prayed, and TRUSTED, that God would provide. Long story short, our Christian experience has shown us that we truly cannot out-give God! The more faithful we are as stewards of his blessings, the more we see his blessings overflow into our lives. Now I know what you are saying because I said it too There is no way I can give ten percent of my gross income to the church and live! Well, here s a challenge for you from God himself. Malachi 3:10 says, Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food (resources) in my Temple. If you do, says the Lord Almighty, I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Let me prove it to you! (New Living Translation). The question you have to ask yourself is: Am I living a life of FAITH, and being a good steward of all God has blessed me with? Practice in the mirror and see what happens. Remember, God isn t after our money. He s after our lives! Looking forward to seeing you in worship! Pastor Todd

2 Page 2 ASSOCIATE PASTOR The Freedom of Discipline Since moving to the beach, I ve started spending hours walking rather than driving. I have learned to enjoy a morning walk on the beach. This new discipline of walking has helped me loose a few pounds, think more clearly, feel better, and gain some energy. I look forward to my walk and feel motivated because of the results. However, last week the rhythm of my life shifted, and I didn t make a conscious effort to go to bed early so that I could get in my walk before waking Ben for school. In the midst of trying to get the urgent completed I stopped making time for the important. I didn t make it for my walk for several days. I had less energy and ultimately was less effective and productive. I realized the hard way, just how much my morning walks were not restraining my schedule, but setting me free to enjoy my day. Ultimately, we recognize that disciplines of exercise set us free to live healthier and, in turn, better lives. At some point, the musician who spends hours practicing discovers the freedom to play an instrument well. The athlete who has practiced finds a different level of play. In a way, they are not controlled by their practice schedule, but set free by their practice to play. Living out our faith requires the same kind of discipline to shape who we are and how we live as Christians. The early Methodists had three rules to practice Do good, do no harm, and keep the ordinances of God. This last rule, keep the ordinances of God, included public worship, study of scripture, Holy Communion, private and family prayer, and abstinence. (The Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church 2012) These rules were not intended to be a burden, but a way of establishing patterns that allowed the early Methodists to draw close to God and to live out their faith in life-giving ways. We need spiritual disciplines that shape our relationship with God, keep us focused on Jesus, and allow us to live out our faith. As Paul assured the Philippians: From now on, brothers and sisters, if anything is excellent and if anything is admirable, focus your thoughts on these things: all that is true, all that is holy, all that is just, all that is pure, all that is lovely, and all that is worthy of praise. Practice these things: whatever you learned, received, heard, or saw in us. The God of peace will be with you. (Philippians 4:8-9) If the beauty of the beach and benefits of walking are good incentive for me to get back to the discipline of walking, how much greater is the incentive of being aware of God s presence to develop or restart spiritual disciplines? Pastor Laura Stewardship 2015 October is financial Stewardship month at Surfside United Methodist Church. On Sunday, October 4, 2015 a Giving Step Chart for our 2015 Ministry budget income will be included in your bulletin. Please be sure to locate yourself on the chart. As you prayerfully consider your pledge of support for our 2016 Ministry budget, please consider moving up one step on the step chart. In James 2:14-26, the central theme is Faith and Works. James letter is concerned primarily with practical matters related to the Christian lifestyle. Does your Work demonstrate your Faith? When we become members of Surfside United Methodist we pledge our support to faithfully participate in its ministries, with our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, and our witness to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord will be our Jubilee Celebration when Surfside United Methodist will celebrate 50 years in ministry. In the Book of Leviticus, God gives to his people many of his laws and commands, and God commanded that his people should celebrate a Year of Jubilee every 50 years. This celebration included canceling all debts, freeing all slaves, and returning to its original owners, all land that had been sold. If God s people would follow God s commands faithfully, they could be assured of God s blessings in every area of their lives. We have heard Pastor Todd s and Pastor Laura s vision for our church. These are exciting times and it will take all of us, the Church, faithfully supporting its ministries to be assured of God s blessings in our lives. We accepted that responsibility as Christians when we became members of this great church. Sunday, October 25, 2015 will be our Commitment Celebration Sunday when we will fill out our pledge cards in support of our 2016 Ministry Budget during worship. Please make a special effort to be in worship on this important day in the life of our church. Thank you and God bless you, Lee Ritchey Stewardship Chairperson

11 Page 11 Congratulations, Brad Dean! The Surfside UMC Church Family congratulates Brad Dean on his graduation from Moody Bible Institute on August 27, Here are some comments from Brad concerning his accomplishment: I have felt God calling me to serve Him more fully in all areas of my life for the past few years. I also felt I needed to dive deeper into His Word more than ever before, so I began to explore seminary programs. I needed a program that would allow me to continue working full-time in the secular world, yet challenge me to learn at a fast pace. I was also interested in studying how the Bible teaches us about leadership, and I believe the Bible is the greatest leadership book ever written. This led me to Moody Bible Institute. I enrolled in June 2013 and graduated with a Masters in Applied Bible Studies in August I am not sure yet where God is leading me, but I am excited about the journey! Brad has also been taking the UMC Lay Servant classes for several years. He has provided pulpit supply in the Marion District and has been active in the Kairos Prison Ministry program. He also was instrumental in the writing of our Long Range Plan for our Church several years ago. In the secular world, he serves as CEO of the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce where he is a member of many Boards that affect the economy of our area. He is a member of Donate Life South Carolina which saves lives through organ donation. Brad and His wife, Myriam, live in Murrells Inlet and they have two children, Bryan and Gina. We celebrate with you, Brad, and pray God will use you in mighty ways to advance His Kingdom. On Sunday, August 30, 2015 a plaque of the Charter Members of Surfside United Methodist Church was dedicated. The plaque was given by charter members, Walter Morris and Sybil Harward Hucks. We celebrate the people whose vision and faith helped to begin 50 years of blessings in this place.

13 Operation Christmas Child 2015 We are kicking off Operation Christmas Child on Wednesday, October 7, 2015, after Spirit Night, in the Fellowship Hall. Our Shoe Boxes are here and ready to be put together. We would love to have you join us in the Fellowship Hall, after our Spirit Night dinner for our annual Box Party. We have surpassed our goals for the last two years, which means more children have had the opportunity to learn about Jesus Christ and receive gifts that they may have never received before. These shoe boxes have changed lives. We have heard testimonies from young people that have received them. Our goal for this year is 500 shoe boxes. What this means is that one shoe box touches 10 other peoples lives, which is 5000 people that will learn about Jesus Christ. Locations will be set up in the Family Life Center (Spirit Night) and the Fellowship Hall for you to pick up your boxes. Included in the box will be an information with 100 suggestions you may purchase for the children. After you complete your box, you may return it to either location. The boxes will be stored until our Operation Christmas Child Celebration Sunday, when they are placed on the Communion Table for blessing. Then we will pack and make ready to ship. Please come and join us in fun and fellowship, putting our shoe boxes together. What a great way to start off the Christmas season!
