1 S u r f s i d e U n i t e d M e t h o d i s t C h u r c h What Do We Know Deep In Our Bones? June 2016 I recently read an article by Mark Tidsworth, President of Pinnacle Leadership Associates entitled What Do You Know Deep In Your Bones? (When It Comes To God, Change, and Your Faith Community). In his article, Mark said, I ve been with clergy and congregations lately who are staring into the eyes of major change. They recognize the way they have been church is less relevant than before, needing to shift as the winds of the Holy Spirit blow through their experience. They are a strange mix of excitement, enthusiasm, and invigoration while at the same time, experiencing disorientation, anxiety, and concern. It s like they are about to launch out into the surf with great daring fueled by holy inspiration, while fighting with their desire to remain safe and comfortable on the beach. Decision points are right in front of them. One such moment arose recently during a Shift Learning Experience. During the event, this pastor and staff, along with their lay leaders and various others from the congregation reached a tipping point, recognizing their need to let go of the past while taking hold of the future. As I watched, they looked like the proverbial deer in the headlights. This is when we stopped, took a deep breath, and asked ourselves what our faith tells us. No, not what beliefs we carry around in our brains which never make it to where we actually live. Instead, we paused to consider what we know, deep in our bones, when it all hits the fan. When what we have known as familiar and comforting, shakes and shivers.what do we know then which sustains us? When the organizations, institutions, and cultural patterns of our lives are deforming, what then? When we turn our eyes to God in those moments, what do we know? These are the moments when the chaff quickly burns away. When we face personal or faith community crises we discover what we know, our practical theology so to speak. Here s what the aforementioned faith community and myself articulated that day. Here s what we decided we know to be true, deep in our bones. God provides what we need in order to do what God calls us to do. No, not everything I want us to do. There are many endeavors on my list which may not reflect God s movement among us. On the other hand, would God call us to do something without guiding us to find the resources? Would we ask our children to do something so far beyond them we know they will fail? When it comes to change, God provides everything we need to move through the changes which are congruent with God s calling for us as individuals and faith communities. This includes capacity sufficient time, money, talents, and any other resources. Our calling is to simply recognize these resources as they come along, moving ahead in faith. We have no need to be afraid. This is one of the Bible s primary themes. Though politicians and leaders of all types choose the low road of maximizing fear in their choose-me-strategies, we Christ-followers are not afraid. When we know who we are and who s we are, then we are not afraid. This plays out in two ways. First, we know the one who has ushered God s people through change repeatedly through the centuries. God knows how to help us navigate change. Second, whatever happens will not destroy us, because we know who we are in Christ. So, we are not afraid. These are two living truths we can count on as a faith community. What about you? What do you know which sustains you when you wake up anxious in the middle of the night? What do you know deep in your bones? Perhaps it s time for invigorated faith which empowers and equips us for these very moments right before us as people, disciples, and faith communities. May God bless Surfside UMC! Pastor Todd

2 Page 2 It s Conference Time And There Is Hope General Conference has just finished, and Annual Conference is right around the corner. In the United Methodist Church, these Conference gatherings are where we conduct the business of the connectional church. What we often fail to realize, in a time of live streaming, is that how we conduct our business provides a witness as well. Unfortunately, these conferences are most likely to make the news when the delegates fail to demonstrate what it means to be united in Christ. This is what happened again this year. I wish that the news picked up other parts of our Conferences. As I watched some of General Conference, I was inspired by some of the sermons, the laity address, and the episcopal address. However, one of the most hopeful moments I saw was when young people came to the microphone in the midst of a heated debate. These young people had been together at the 2014 United Methodist Global Young People s Convocation and Legislative Assembly held in Manila, Philippines. At that meeting, they survived a typhoon which ripped the roof off one of the places they were staying and days of meetings and debates. When they could not reach agreement on the topic of human sexuality they wrote the following statement which they shared with General Conference: There has been increasing talk of schism of the United Methodist Church in recent months. Many say that the issue of homosexuality is so contentious that it will inevitably split our Church. We, as the young people of The United Methodist Church, would like to say that we do not desire a divided Church. The Church that we have taken our places in is called to a ministry that includes so much more than this one issue. There are genuine, passionate perspectives on all sides of the issue and though we disagree, we have committed ourselves to loving, faithful discussion on this subject. Part of the beauty of our Church is that there has always been room at the table for a wide range of theological diversity within our connectional church family. As Wesley said, May we not be of one heart, though we are not of one opinion? We urge everyone to seek solutions that promote our global unity as the United Methodist Church of Jesus Christ, rather than focus only on the issues that divide us, so that we may faithfully live out our mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. In these young people, I see the future of a global church. A church that is diverse and united. A church that is willing to brave real storms and put its trust in God. A church that is deeply grounded in its history, eagerly embracing one another in the present, and stepping boldly into the future. This is why I turn on the live stream and look forward to Annual Conference. God shows up and surprises us with signs of hope and moments of inspiration. Please pray that we will do the necessary business and be inspired by what God is doing when we go to us as Annual Conference. Peace, Laura

4 Page 4 June, July, and August Three months of summer are finally here. Have you planned a vacation where you will travel? Maybe you plan to kick back and catch up on your reading. Are you some of the lucky ones having friends and family coming to visit this summer? For everything there is a season and the summer season is our time, as United Methodist Women, to reflect on the many ways we have lived out our PURPOSE by supporting local, district, and state mission programs. We have cleaned out our closets and given old shoes to the Family Justice Center in Georgetown. We have purchased items to fill tote bags given to Rural Mission of John s Island. Conway Hospital has been the recipient of baby layette items donated earlier this year. Food items are donated to Help 4 Kids and South Strand Helping Hand monthly. New pillows in colorful cotton hand-sewn pillowcases are being given to local charities. We clip Box Tops for Education and Campbell Soup Labels to send to Wallace Family Life Center in Bennettsville, SC. We celebrated together when we hosted Church Women United s Human Rights Day, served a Lenten Luncheon, held a United Methodist Women Sunday, and our all-church annual Mother-Daughter Banquet. We welcomed new members Anna Henry, Sandy Elliott, Marlene Jewel, and Mary Schreffler to our local unit. Time to rest; time to rejuvenate in order to return in September ready to go again. Thank you, Surfside United Methodist Women, for all you do as the hands and feet of Christ. Enjoy your summer. Travel mercies to those who are leaving the beach to visit elsewhere. Our Nominating Committee will be making some calls during the summer to fill two positions that are opening up on the executive board at the end of the year: Program Resources Chairperson in charge of our reading program and President. Prayer-fully consider their request and the opportunity to serve in a wonderful organization. Let me close by saying Goodbye to Pastor Todd and Cara. We will miss you. Your stay with us was much too short. And Welcome to Pastor Scarlett Hester. We look forward to worshipping with you and getting to know you. Prayer for Today: Father, I know You hear me when I pray. Help me to hear You so that I may know Your will and live in obedience to it with love and joy. Amen MARY BAKER CIRCLE Mary Baker Circle will meet at Damon s Restaurant at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8. Carpool from church at 11:30 a.m. Bring a friend and enjoy food and fellowship. 5 Page 5 STEWARDSHIP What do you think of when you hear the word stewardship? The dictionaries definition says, stewardship involves faithfulness in the use of our God given resources like our time, talents, and money. When we joined the UM Church we promised to uphold it with our prayers, our presence, our gifts and our service. This year as you consider your stewardship commitment (pledge) will you consider a commitment of your God given talents in service to SUMC. The Bible describes the Church as the body of Christ who is the head. The Church (body of believers) has many parts which cannot function as a whole if parts are missing or not being used. Are you an eye, a foot, a hand or an ear. God has placed each of us where He wants us to be so we can show our love to Him and use our gifts and talents in service to SUMC. Is your talent singing, preaching, teaching, caregiving, hospitality, ushering, being a prayer warrior, leading a small group working with young people serving on a committee? There are may opportunities in our Church to use your gifts and talents in service to our Lord and others. Please do not hide your talents under a bushel basket, but let your light shine. Remember your promise to uphold our Church with your prayers, your presence, your gifts and your service. Mary Jane Miller Stewardship Committee Dear Church Family, By the time you receive this newsletter, our school year will have come to a close. So very hard to believe. We rounded out the month of May with a fabulous Teacher Appreciation Week luncheon hosted by our wonderful families. Registration for all of our programs is still open. Please check our website or call the CDC office for more info. It is illegal for a teacher to lead their class in prayer but, that same teacher can freely pray with her students in Good News Club. Praise God for opening the door for Good News Clubs to take place in our local communities. This past year in GNC has seen many blessings, prayers answered, and children come to know Jesus. During the school year, 2,235 local students attended Good News and 426 made a profession of faith in Jesus to forgive them of their sins. Praise God! That means there are many new believers who need to be connected to a church. Imagine if all of the children who attended the Good News Club closest to your church (56 student at the Lakewood Elementary GNC) and their families began attending your church? These families need to connect with a spiritual family. Will you thank God with me for the work He is doing in the public elementary schools and in our churches through the children? Learn more at
