I would like to put out a special thanks to Tom Pick for his leadership and service as our Grand Knight these past two years. I would also like to thank DJ Smith for stepping up to be the Deputy Grand Knight. With the help of God I hope the next couple years will be a good learning and faith building experience for all of us. Join me in prayer this month that we all may come together as a brotherhood, to pray for the health, safety, and wellness of our families. 3 Special Election of Officers Announcement There will be a special election for officer positions at the August business meeting due to resignations. The offices to be filled are: Grand Knight and Advocate. Nominations will be taken from the floor prior to the election. KC Blanket Race Friday night, August 8 th at Agricultural Park in Columbus, the Knights of Columbus will sponsor a blanket on the 5 th race to the winning owner and trainer. Come join the fun! We will have tables reserved for everyone up in the club room for the evening s races. There will even be a couple selection sheets available to help pick the winning horses. All Knights and ladies and guests are asked to be down in the winner s circle for the group picture with the winning horse and blanket. Our Council needs a new Financial Secretary with the news that our current FS, Ray Johnson, needs to retire from that position.

Thank you to brother Knight, Larry Sindelar for accepting the position of Simon House baler supervisor in addition to his position as warden. And thank you to Howard Milburn who faithfully served in both of these positions for many good years! Will You Be the One to Step Forward? Our Council needs a new Financial Secretary with the news that our current FS, Ray Johnson, needs to retire from that position. This is the only officer position in our Council that provides a modest stipend. The only qualifications you need are organizational skills and a commitment to actively attend our monthly meetings. Training and a mentor will be provided!

6 Notes from the July 7, 2014 Business Meeting 17 Knights were in attendance including new District Deputy, Ron Faltys and guest brother Knight Tom Albin from Lincoln... Beginning balance for June was $7, Income was $25.00 and expenses were $ with an ending balance of $7, Bills for June included: $50 for the Archdiocesan Priest Appreciation Dinner, $1, for the state Per Capita assessment, $300 for the next quarter of hall rental, $ for the FS stipend, and $185 for the track rental for the KC track meet. We had two communications: 1) a letter from Education International seeking host families for international students wishing to attend Scotus and for a local supervisor (paid position.) Host families would receive compensation for food and housing and the students provide their own health insurance, school tuition, and spending money. 2) Clete Pillen, a member of the St. Bon s parish council thanked the KC s for the successful breakfast fundraiser for the parish. A thank you card was sent to the family of Eugene Miller for their $75 memorial gift in Eugene s honor. Two members who are sick or in distress were sent cards signed by the membership. The 4 th Degree will have its installation of officers this Sunday after the 10:30 Mass at St. Anthony s. The June 29 1breakfast fundraiser for the convent demolition served 213 meals and raised a net of $1,529. Many members of the parish council and their spouses helped with the breakfast and Dick Hamling did his usual awesome job as breakfast master! Brother Knight Tom Albin, representing the Newman Center at UNL in Lincoln gave a presentation on their $25 million dollar capital campaign to build a new chapel, fraternity and sorority on the UNL campus. To date, $18.1 million has been raised and they are seeking a 4-year pledge from our council of $10,000. They hope to dedicate the new facility and St. Thomas Aquinas Church this spring. A hat was passed around to collect donations at the meeting for the Pilger tornado relief fund and $133 was donated. If any other Council member wishes to make a donation, please send your gift to one of the Council officers. Carroll Ebner moved and Don Mroczek seconded a motion to partner with the other two Columbus Councils to sponsor a blanket race at Ag Park. The motion also included a maximum commitment from Council 938 of $100. The motion carried. It was noted that the Council will purchase 2 cases of Keep Christ in Christmas card to be sold at the parish. On June 9 th St. Bonaventure Parish Pastor, Fr. 7 Funeral Mass Honor Guard If you attend a funeral Mass for a Brother Knight, you are encouraged to participate in the KC honor guard. Knights will usually gather in the church entrance prior to the Mass and pin on the honor guard ribbons to their coats. The honor guard processes together into the church before the family and is seated together behind the pews reserved for the pall bearers. At the conclusion of the Mass, the honor guard processes out of the church, before the family and casket are ushered out, and we stand at attention at the church entrance as the casket leaves the church. All Knights from any Council are welcome to stand honor guard. If the deceased is also a member of the Fourth Degree, a color corps of Fourth Degree The Knights Man leads of the the KC honor Shroud guard. As a part of its 15th anniversary celebration, Spirit Catholic Radio is bringing The Man of the Shroud display to Columbus! There is no cost to view the exhibit. View a life-size 14-by-3-foot photographic transparency that replicates the holy Shroud of Turin. The exhibit features many detailed, back-lit panels representing the information surrounding the Shroud, death and resurrection of Jesus. It also features a life-size sculpture of Jesus on the cross graphically depicting every wound that is revealed in the image of the Shroud. This sculpture is placed on a 9-foot high wooden cross.the Man of the Shroud will be available for viewing at Scotus Central Catholic High School, Tuesday-Friday, July 29-Aug. 1, 4 to 8 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 2, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Aug. 3, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Experience the power, history and beauty of the holy Shroud of Turin. On loan from The National Shrine of St. Maximilian Kolbe Marytown. Presented by Spirit Catholic Radio in partnership with the Knights of Columbus. 8 Meeting Needs In a study of widows and widowers whose spouses died prematurely (between the ages of 30 and 55), nearly two-thirds reported that the death had a devastating or major financial impact on their families financial security. Even three to five years after the death, about half of the surviving spouses said their families financial situation was worse than prior to death. The findings shed new light on the degree to which people lack adequate life insurance coverage. In 39 percent of the cases studied, the deceased had no life insurance coverage whatsoever. When there was coverage, those who died carried an average of only 2.1 times their annual income in life insurance clearly not adequate. The study demonstrates that it is not enough to simply have life insurance. It s critically important that people have enough life insurance. For instance, in those cases where the deceased had less than three times his or her annual income in coverage, only 35 percent of surviving spouses said the life insurance proceeds were adequate. By contrast, when the deceased had five times his or her annual income or more, the percentage of surviving spouses who described the proceeds as adequate jumps to 75 percent. The Profiles + Forecaster software that Knights of Columbus agents are equipped with allows us to make recommendations based on the needs and goals of each family, which ensures that they have adequate coverage. For a sense of the real-world impact of premature death, consider these comments from respondents who described the proceeds from their spouses life insurance as inadequate: The life insurance only lasted for a year, and He had $25,000 in life insurance. I paid for his funeral, put $500 in each child s college fund, paid the rest of the bills, and I m still in debt. The absence of adequate coverage forced many surviving spouses to make hard choices to make ends meet. These range from reducing the family s discretionary spending to borrowing money from family and friends to taking out loans from the bank or a retirement account.
