Did you pay your 2018 dues? Did you sign up a 2018 member? Did you attend at least 1 meeting or function? All good questions and I think I know the answers. Let us all try harder next year! I would like to begin by thanking those who attended the Memorial Mass. I am sure the families of departed s Anthony Bigaouette and William Klingbile appreciated the efforts of our Council on behalf of their loved ones. And of course our prayers were offered up for all our departed brother knights. As this is our Christmas issue, I would like to take the opportunity to wish every member of Council 1453 and their families the holiest of Christmases and a very joyous holiday season, so from my family to yours all the best for the season. Please keep in mind the true reason for the season by Keeping Christ in Christmas. I truly believe that it is worthwhile from time to time to stop and take stock of our lives and the beginning of a new year seems to be as good a time as any. Every year at this time I try to come up with a New Years resolution that I will be faithful to for the coming year. Unfortunately in the past I have been woefully lacking in the effort to keep my New Years resolutions. As I write this I am hopeful something will come to mind for I extend all my best wishes to everyone that you will be more successful in your resolutions. While some ideas seem silly and others productive I am sure God looks favourably on all efforts to lead a better life. PS. Remember the Christmas Party on the 20th. Hope to see everyone there. 3 Page 3 From the Chancellor: Chancellor Michael O Brien PGK Dear brothers. Our Memorial Mass was pretty well attended, Many CWL & members of Dean Wagner Assembly and Holy Family Council. We had our normal turnout too, about 12 in all. It was a good service and breakfast, thanks for attending. Our next project is remembering our shut in and bedridden members, so far only two to help, if you know any one let me know before too long. District Report: Mario Iatonna DD #10 Catholic Missions In Canada When we think of missions, we often think of evangelization of people in far off, remote places. When we think of such work in Canada, we think back to the missionaries who were here before we ever became a country. While both of these thoughts would be accurate, you may be surprised to know that missionaries continue to work in many areas of Canada to this very day. There is, in fact, a formal organization, known as Catholic Missions In Canada (CMIC), that has overseen these missions for over 100 years. CMIC seeks to sustain and extend the Catholic Faith in isolated, poor and hard-to-reach areas in our own country. Diocesan resources are typically insufficient to keep the Church alive in these communities. CMIC promotes national awareness of the needs of our own Canadian missions and raises funds to sustain the work of evangelization. Given the remoteness of these missions, they are often faced with day-to-day upkeep and urgent needs including heating, electricity, building and building repairs, that are difficult and expensive to address. They also have other expenses related to First Nations ministries, catechism programs, lay formation programs and travel for the missionaries to these remote areas. A staggering amount of $4M is needed each year to fund these basic needs and activities. From the fishing ports on the eastern seaboard to the coastal mountains on the west coast, to the fly-in communities in the arctic north, Canadian missionaries are helping transform lives through their presence in sharing the good news of Jesus Christ among our neediest and most isolated communities. Individual and KofC council donations to sustain this very important and ongoing charitable work are certainly encouraged. 4 Page 4 Our Ladies Corner: Dear Ladies: Windsor Council 1453 Charity Pickerel Fish Fry With Christmas fast approaching, I know that you're all very busy but I really hope that you will be able to attend our Christmas party On Dec.10 at Lilly Kaillie's, just pray for good weather. Our next meeting will be in March, please try to attend as we have some important decisions to make. O God of all the nations, the One God who is and was and always will be, in your providence you willed that your Church be united to the suffering of your Son. Look with mercy on your servants who are persecuted for their faith in you. Grant them perseverance and courage to be worthy imitators of Christ. Bring your wisdom upon leaders of nations to work for peace among all peoples. May your Spirit open conversion for those who contradict your will, that we may live in harmony. We are planning on going the weekend of April 7 th & 8th, Anyone who is interested in going to the tournament can contact Ray Dupuis or Roy Renaud The cost for bowling is $72.00 US funds which is $23 for each event plus $3 for all events. The deadline for entry fees is February 19 th, 2018.

Especially as we prepare to ring in another new year. I hope that 2017 was a healthy, prosperous year for you and your family. If you re like most people, you ll probably be making some resolutions for the New Year. If I may, I d like to add to your list of resolutions by two. First, write them down. A resolution is really a goal for the year and, until you commit a goal to writing, it s nothing more than a wish. So write your resolutions down. Whether they be to lose weight, contribute more time and money to charity, read more or watch less television, you re more likely to stick to them if you write them down. Second, schedule some time to visit with me, your professional s of Columbus insurance agent. 7 Page 7 Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William E. Lori WE CAN OVERCOME DISAGREEMENTS THROUGH, AND FOR THE SAKE OF, OUR SHARED CHARITY, UNITY AND FRATERNITY ROBERT S RULES OF ORDER, the authoritative playbook on how to run a meeting, stipulates that meetings should include a segment called the Good of the Order. This is time that is reserved for participants to offer comments or observations about the organization and its work. It is also time set aside for disciplinary matters involving fellow members. That s what the phrase the good of the order means to those who are skilled parliamentarians. But when I hear this phrase, I also think about the s of Columbus. I think about the good of our Order, founded in 1882 by Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney. Not even he could have imagined how his beloved Order would grow and the world of good it would do for its members, their families, the Church, and communities all over the world. STRONG OPINIONS I think about who makes up the s of Columbus and all that it does in service of others, and I ask myself, How can I promote the good of the Order? Left to my own resources, I can t adequately answer that question, for the good of the Order cannot be reduced merely to my opinions. The same is true of every of Columbus. The Order we joined is not a debating society, nor is it an arena where we play out a contest of wills. Rather, it is an organization rooted in charity, which expresses itself in genuine unity of mind and heart and in a brotherhood of service. In fact, our ability to do great good for our members, our Church and our world depends on our willingness to preserve and strengthen this solidarity. Time and again, I have experienced the great dedication of many brother s. In their commitment to the Order, they are passionate about the principles upon which the s of Columbus was founded, about the brotherhood we share, and about the good works that we do. Such commitment and passion sometimes lead to strong opinions, and experience teaches that these opinions can differ. At times, we may disagree with a decision made by our local or state council, or with a decision that comes from Supreme. After we ve expressed our opinion respectfully and cogently, we may be upset that our view did not prevail. When that happens, it s easy to throw our unity and charity under the proverbial bus. Sadly, some brother s may even decide to walk away. If and when we reach such a crossroads, I firmly believe that we need to stop, look, and listen. We have to stop being angry, look at what the Order is really all about, and listen to the voice of the Lord. SOLIDARITY IN CHRIST The first step is quelling our anger. There is such a thing as just anger when we see injustice or corruption. However, that is not the same as harboring enmity, grudges, rivalries or even thoughts of vengeance against a person who gets under our skin. When we nurture our anger against leaders or other members of the Order, we chip away at the unity and fraternity that makes the s of Columbus distinctive and great. Second is the need to look carefully at what is central in the life of the Order. The charity we share is not merely our good will but the charity of Christ. The unity we share is not merely a human consensus but rather the unity of the Holy Trinity. And the brotherhood we share is that of the Son of God who became one of us and united himself to us. If you think this sounds a bit inflated, please reconsider! Our Order was founded as a Catholic organization by a parish priest to draw us closer to Christ and to the Church. Our principles come from the Gospel and lead us deeper into the Gospel. Our solidarity in Christ, for example, is more than agreement based on common interests. It is a moral virtue and a God-given power to band together to do enormous good. Our fraternity is, to be sure, a path to great friendships that extend to our families and a source of real support in living our faith, especially in times of trouble. But in our solidarity, we are not confined to our individual interests and opinions. Rather, we participate in something much greater than ourselves and accomplish things we could never do alone. We share profoundly in one another s faith and humanity, and together we open ourselves to God s grace. So, while it is natural to get upset when we don t get our way and our views are overridden, we must not stay angry and forget to look at the bigger picture. Finally, we need to listen first to the voice of the Lord and of the Church, then to our loved ones, and then to our brother s. From time to time, our strong opinions can make it difficult to pray so as to discern the will of God and to hear what the Church or others are telling us. Therefore, we need to keep things in perspective by developing our life of prayer listening to the voice of the Lord and seeking his will in our lives. Then, when we speak, even if we disagree, our words will have the ring of wisdom and authenticity. With this in mind, let us all devote ourselves anew to the good of the Order!
