For yers Henry Fieldings eighteenth-century novel "Tom Jones" hs been one of the privte tresures of E n g i s h scholrs. Although full of mrvelous wit nd high spirits, the very size of the novel \some 800-plus pges in most editions) discourges most modern reders. Now they need not miss out on the fun of the...,. book ny longer, for director Tony l Richrdson nd; screenwriter John[ 0 s born hve:: brought "T o m "-._. Jones" to the screen. Here, in different medium, the delicious SHERTZER good humor nd exhubernt grossness of the novel live gin in truly wonderful film. "Tom Jones" is, s Fielding subtitled the work, the history of foundling. Tom, n infnt, is discovered one evening in the bed of welthy country squire. This noble gentlemn, Squire All worthy. rises Tom like son, but the boys youthful vitlity nd lck of prudence often led him into mischief. His riv-l, the hypocrite Blifil, the Squires nephew, sneky nd conniving, but seemingly morl, nmbypmby persudes Allwqrthy tht Tom should be disowned for his immorlity. Sdly, the good.squire consents, nd poor Tom is tossed out into the world to llecome the toy of fte. /" Bd To Worse From this point on, things go from bd.to wonse nd the plot becomes s twisted s bdly folded rodmp. Whenever possible, he lets Fielding spek for himself; mny of the lines in the picture re lifted directly from the book. n ddition, through the use of nrrtor, he hs retined gret del of the witty mteril which Fielding used to introduce his chpters. (For exmple, we her "t is sid tht drink often dulls mn. This is often so... in dull mn.") Plying Tom is Albert Finney, brillint young ctor previoujsly known in this country only for his work in "Sturdy Night nd Sundy Morning." The very embodiment of Tom, Finney is perfection itself. His complete ese nd nturlness re so convincing tht it is hrd to believe tht he is relly cting. Accompnying him on his merry misdventures re Dine Cilento s Molly, the gmekeepers bwdy dughter, John Greenwood s Ldy BellLSton, worldly Lndon society womn, Joyce Redmn s Mrs. Wlters, most endering dinner compnion, nd Susnnh York s Sophie Western, Toms true love. Hugh Griffith gives n mzing performnce s Sophies fther, Squire Western. His portryl of Fieldings rucous bucolic should certdnly win 0ther Oscr for him this spring. No less perfect is Dme Edith Evns of Westerns pretenously sophisticted sister. Well Mde Techniclly, this picture is extremely well-mde.. The Estmn photogrphy by Wlter Lsslly is wrm with the rich pstels of the English countryside nd brethtkingly beutiful. The costuming is nothing short of stupendous, nd John. Addisons lively musicl score plun!ked on twngy hrpsichord is delightful. With "Tom Jones" the prolific creer (hes direr.ted severl plys in Englnd nd three on Brodwy in the lst yer in ddition to his films) of guid, ing genius, producer-directo Tony Richrdson, hs tken decidedly unexpected turn. Heretofore his films ("Look Bck in Anger," "The Entertiner," "Sturdy Night nd Sundy Morning," "A Tste of Honey," nd "Loneliness of the Long Distnce Runner") hve been known for their gloomy yet sympthetic portryls of the contemporry English working -clss. With "Tom Jones," the gloom hs been dispelled. Richrdson hs broken out of the "kitchen sink" trdition nd proven his verstility with picture tht bounds with s= much good humor nd high; spirits s his erlier films did with nger nd disillusionment. Nevertheless, his tridemrk is still there, nd socil protest runs throughout the film. He protests the living conditions of the London slums nd he protests the riotous living of the English country gentlemn t the expense of his downtrodden tennts. Although perhps gentler llld more mture, his l5moujs "nger" is still there. He hs merely dressed it in n eighteenth-century costume n d prded it in throu.gh the bck door in this wildly ribld film. Not Fultless And yet, for ll of its excellences, his "Tom Jones" is not fultless gem. n his ttempt to cpture the novels riotous spirit on film, Richrdson hs used just bout every trick in the book. Sometimes they work well on film; sometimes they dont. For exmple, he relies on some chep gimmicks like speeded-up photogrphy l, Mck Sennett nd extended still frmes for hs comic effects. n ddition, he mkes use of devices, such s prody (s in the titled spoof on silent films which opens the picture), fcil mugging, nd sides to the udience, more pproprite i:o other entertinment, medi in thijs film. n other plces his pce seems ll wrong. He gllops through the picture, nd just when you wnt to svor line or expression, he whisks on to something else le vin:g his udience brethlessly behind. Such flws re soon forgottej:.li in view of the films virtues, however, nd only the most criticl moviegoer will relly hold such trickery ginst Richrdson. Most will be chrmed nd cheered by the picture. "Tom Jones" will certinly enjoy long nd hppy life. Whether it is, s the generlly glum Newsweek described it, the "be<st comedy ever mde," however, remins to be seen. Personlly, think New York Times critic Bosley Crowther best described the picture when he clled it "roring entert.inment." " Thts fine! But wht exctly is this college doing in %4 l Consider these fcts. Dr. True :blood speks t night in Wit Chpel nd the turnout would brely fill phonebooth in Potet dolm. The College Union brings noteworthy lecturer to the cmpus nd the size of his udience mkes the Xlph Sigs look like monstrous horde. There re more students who wtch TV in the prlor of Johnson dorm on Sturdy night thn who ever her Dr. Blckburns voice on Sundy. * * * Why? Becuse this colleoe is killing individulity, the spilit of freedom, the bsis upon which the questioning mind opertes. t mkes no difference whether the subject is the nture of God or the relibility of U.S. missiles; the \ ke Forest student doesnt cre bout wht he hsnt lredy encountered- except for the new mteril forced on him Y his mercile professors. He S content to get by with s little effort s possible. He gets into his little rut tht is clculted to rrive exctly t 28 hours nd 28 qulity points, nd he never looks round the bend in the rod-or even to the other side of the rod. And the reson for this sorry stte of ffirs is to be found in the fct tht Wke Forest hs rule to tell you wht to do when to do it, nd how to do it: You re told how mny times to go to clss, nd it doesnt mke ny difference if the professors lecture hs more circles thn monkeys til. You go! Youre told tht you cnt chnge your exm schedule even if you hve three exms in your mjor within 24 hours. t mkes no difference if your professor nd President Tribble gree to let you chnge; the rule sys you cnt-so you pssively wtch s semesters work goes down the drin. Youre told how to ct in the socil world, nd then the rules re forgotten until circumstnces rise wich force the Student Affirs Committee to punish you for doing wht you hold to be cceptble nd for wht everyone else continues to do. And the relity of the sitution tkes second plce to the undebtble, blck-nd-white rule - though the entire discussion in the committee meeting becomes frcicl. The dorm counsellor tells you tht you cnt.mke noise in the dorm fter 0 p. m., tht you must never throw nyone into the sho, wer, nd tht shving crem fight ws mns.originl sin. * * * Petty rules? No, theyre not! They dmge the mind. A person gets used to being told wht to do. He.no longer inquires >vhts right nd wrong; he expects to be told. And fr from pointing student in the right direction, from Christin stndpoint, these rules drive the student wy from whtever rgument is used to justify their existence. The dislike for these rules is esily trnsferred to the :f::orce tht cuses them to be used. The best eductionl institutions in this country hve the lest rules-cdemic or socil. The expected retort is tht these schools re not turning out mny Christins either. But wht good is pseudo-religion tht is forced upon mn? Did not Christ plce vlue on the worth of mns integrity? And does not mn hve the right to choose his own pth? hve sneking suspicion tht the good Lord expects mn to mke mistke every now nd then- nd to profit. from his mistke.
