Of Tresures nd Troubles Mrk 10:17-31 FIT Teching Guide by Rick Jordn This dult teching outline is designed to support The Bible Lesson by Tony Crtlege, printed in Bptists Tody. You cn subscribe to either the digitl or print edition of Bptists Tody to ccess the lessons. Plese lso ensure tht ech person in your clss hs copy of Bptists Tody so they cn prepre before the lesson. Before the Lesson: Mke copies of the hndout, Feed the Hungry Nurture Your Soul, for the Trnsformtionl Exercise. Fellowship Question Use one of the following to brek the ice, to begin discussion, nd led into the study: If you were creting resume, who is one person you would relly like to list s reference nd why? Hve you ever turned down job offer? If so, why? Informtion Tody s story is not bout creer chnge, but it is bout mking just s significnt choice with wht to do with one s life. [Hve clss member red Mrk 10:17-22.] The story begins with bit of mystery. The mn is setting out on journey. We re not told where he is heded, how long the journey will be or if the visit with Jesus ws detour. Mybe Mrk is offering us n opportunity to think of this not s literl journey, but s spiritul one. Wht do you see in this prt of the story tht gives us hints bout this mn s spiritul journey? The commndments tht Jesus offers in response to the mn s question come from the Ten Commndments. But Jesus does not offer ten sttements. Let s remind ourselves wht the Ten Commndments were. As you listen to this reding, py ttention to which commndments Jesus includes nd which he does not. [Hve clss member red Exodus 20:1-4, 7-8, ] Which commndments did Jesus include in his response to the mn? Which did Jesus not include? Why do you think this is? [The Bible Lesson writer notes, Perhps [Jesus] recognized tht the mn hd firm belief in God nd ws in no dnger of trusting in other deities, so he focused on reltionships with others n ren in which mteril resources ply mjor role Jesus did not mention coveting, but he dded you shll not defrud. ] 2 Nurturing Fith October 11, 2015

Informtion continued How did the mn respond to Jesus litny of lws? How would you respond to someone who sys they hve done everything perfectly since their childhood? The Bible Lesson writer notes, This is the only time in Mrk s gospel tht Jesus is sid to love n individul. Wht is it bout this mn, do you imgine, tht stirred Jesus obvious compssion for him? There is nother unique thing bout this story, ccording to The Bible Lesson writer: This is the only gospel story in which someone refused Jesus direct ppel to follow him. We hve severl stories of persons pproching Jesus sking to follow him. We hve other stories in which Jesus invites persons to follow him nd they immeditely drop wht they re doing to become his disciples. Wht blocks this mn from following Jesus? Does Jesus expect everyone to sell everything before they cn enter into the kingdom? (Jesus does not sk the sme from ech person who follows him. When Jesus clled the twelve disciples, he chllenged them to leve their current occuptions behind nd follow him, but sid nothing of possessions Mtthew left his job s tx collector to follow Jesus: whether he lso left his money to the poor is not stted Believers in Jeruslem [sold] personl property s needed in order to ssist others but there is no indiction tht everyone sold everything Prt of Pul s strtegy seems to hve been to seek out people of mens who could host the church in their homes. [From the online resource, The Hrdest Question: Does Jesus expect everyone to sell everything before we cn enter into the kingdom? ]) One thing tht seprtes Jesus commnd to this rich young ruler nd the preching of the prosperity gospel techers is where the mn ws to send his money. They insist tht the money be sent to their ministry s bnk ccount. Where did Jesus tell the young mn to put his money? If Jesus hs different requirements of different persons, wht things might be held in common for those who wnt to be Jesus followers? (repentnce; obedience; persevernce; service of others, etc.) One thing the mn lcked ws willingness to seprte his mteril welth from his personl identity. The mn seems to desire from Jesus n endorsement for his superb keeping of the Lw. Imgine hving Jesus s reference on your resume! Wht he did not seem to hve ws desire to wnt wht Jesus desired for him. In Trppist monk Thoms Merton s utobiogrphy, he sys, I forget wht we were rguing bout, but in the end Lx suddenly turned round nd sked me the question: Wht do you wnt to be nywy? I don t know; I guess wht I wnt is to be good Ctholic. Wht do you men, you wnt to be good Ctholic? The explntion I gve ws lme enough, nd expressed my confusion, nd betryed how little I hd relly thought bout it t ll. Lx did not ccept it. Wht you should sy he told me wht you should sy is tht you wnt to 3 Nurturing Fith October 11, 2015

Informtion continued be sint. A sint! The thought struck me little weird. I sid, How do you expect me to be sint? By wnting to, sid Lx simply. I cn t be sint, I sid But Lx sid, All tht is necessry to be sint is to wnt to be one. Don t you believe God will mke you wht He creted you to be, if you will consent to let him do it? All you hve to do is desire it. [Thoms Merton. The Seven Story Mountin s quoted in Seeds. Thoms Merton. Edited by Robert Inchusti. Boston: Shmbl p. 153.] Wht do you think of this conclusion: tht God creted us to be sints? This story of the rich young ruler is included in ll three of the synoptic gospels (Mtthew, Mrk nd Luke). Why do you think ech of the gospel writers thought it ws importnt to tell this story to their reders? All three of the synoptic gospels tell this story immeditely following the story of Jesus blessing the children (lst week s text). [Hve clss member red Mrk 10:13-16.] Wht cn we lern by compring these two stories? Once gin, Jesus teching confuses the disciples. [Hve clss member red Mrk 10:23-27.] Wht re your thoughts nd insights bout wht Jesus is sying? Our slvtion cnnot be gined by our welth or our good works. Our welth (nd even our good works!) cn ctully block wht God desires for us nd God s desire for us is wht is best for us. We hve seen tht lthough Jesus wnted this young mn to renounce his welth nd become generous donor, Jesus invites others to renounce different things or persons or hbits s significnt first public sign of discipleship. Does your fith journey include letting go of something so tht you could receive Jesus in your life? Would you shre tht story with us? [Hve clss member red Mrk 10:28-31.] Agin, the flse messge of prosperity gospel techers uses literl reding of this text to sy, Send tht money to me nd God promises to multiply your money for your personl benefit. However, we know from reding the stories of the disciples fter the deth nd resurrection of Jesus tht none of them received instnt welth or relxed in comfortble retirement communities. So, wht does Jesus men bout the multipliction of houses, fmily nd fields? (The fith community will offer the fithful shelter, community nd meningful work; There will be rewrds for the fithful in Heven; etc.) Wht do you think of this sttement from The Bible Lesson? The view of rewrds is inherently prdoxicl. Those who receive the gretest rewrds re the very ones who do not seek ny gin, while persons with mixed motives who hope for gret rewrds my discover tht they re t the bottom of the list. 4 Nurturing Fith October 11, 2015

Trnsformtionl Exercise Giving your money to the poor or to help the poor will not buy you ticket into Heven. Only fith in Jesus Christ cn do tht. However, Jesus perceived tht this welthy young mn s welth ws seprting him from God s best for him. Mybe he justified his welth (nd keeping it) s sign of God s rewrd for religious life. Mybe this seprted him even further from those in need, believing tht they were too sinful or too lzy or otherwise undeserving of his money. Whtever his resons for keeping his welth, the young mn ws not exemplifying the generous God tht Jesus modeled. The desire to keep his welth hindered the young mn from being follower of Jesus, living s Jesus lived, loving who Jesus loved (including the poor). In mny churches, October is time to emphsize world hunger nd to collect offerings for ministries tht ddress hunger. In period of silence, I will sk us to consider three questions. [Allow time of silence between the reding of ech question.] Consider this question: Wht is the lrgest single dontion you hve given for the hungry? Now consider this question: Wht for you would be generous dontion for the hungry? And now this question: If generous dontion could help others nd could demonstrte your discipleship s Jesus follower, wht is keeping you from mking tht dontion? Thnk you for your time given to reflection. I would like to give you sheet of suggestions of plces tht you my wnt to give generous offering to. [Distribute the hndout, Feed the Hungry Nurture Your Soul. ] [Point out the orgniztions listed. Ask for suggestions tht individul clss members endorse.] [Close in pryer something like this: How sd it is tht this welthy young mn turned wy from reltionship with you, O God. How sd it would be if we would let nything come between us nd who you wnt us to become. Tke our lives nd let them be fithful to your cll to be your disciples. Amen. ] Comments or Questions for Rick Jordn? You my send comments to the lesson pln uthor t rjordn@cbfnc.org. Rick is lso vilble to led workshops nd conferences on Christin Eduction, with prticulr emphsis on how best to use the FIT Fith model. 5 Nurturing Fith October 11, 2015

Digging Deeper by Tony Crtlege Digging Deeper is designed to support The Bible Lesson by Tony Crtlege, printed in Bptists Tody. Wtch for the shovel icon in the The Bible Lesson, nd then reference tht item in this Digging Deeper resource. You cn subscribe to either the digitl or print edition of Bptists Tody to ccess the lessons. Plese lso ensure tht ech person in your clss hs copy of Bptists Tody so they cn prepre before the lesson. Triple ply The ccount of the rich mn inquiring of Jesus is found in ll three of the synoptic (mening seen together ) Gospels, so clled becuse they repet much of the sme mteril bout Jesus, though not lwys in the sme wy. Prllel versions of this text re found in Mtt. 19:16-22, Mrk 10:17-22, nd Luke 18: Eternl life Through most of the Old Testment period, the Jews did not hrbor concept of eternl life. It ws commonly believed tht ll people trveled to n underground bode clled Sheol when they died. Sheol ws not equivlent to the lter concept of hell, though it ws unfortuntely trnslted tht wy in the Greek version clled the Septugint. Sheol denoted plce inhbited by good nd evil, rich nd poor. Sheol ws not plce of rewrds or punishments, only of drkness nd silence (Ps. 88:10-12, 115:17; Job 10:21-22). The notion of eternl life ccompnied by rewrds developed only lte, nd some biblicl writers who knew of it didn t buy it. Qoheleth, the uthor of Ecclesistes, wrote: I sid in my hert with regrd to humn beings tht God is testing them to show tht they re but nimls. For the fte of humns nd the fte of nimls is the sme; s one dies, so dies the other. They ll hve the sme breth, nd humns hve no dvntge over the nimls; for ll is vnity. Who knows whether the humn spirit goes upwrd nd the spirit of nimls goes downwrd to the erth? (Eccl. 3:18-21). A belief in resurrection to eternl life blossomed during the intertestmentl period nd ws commonly ccepted by mny Jews in the first century, including the protgonist of tody s text. Don t cll me good Why did Jesus tell the mn not to cll him good, since only God could be clled good? Perhps his purpose ws to deflect ttention from himself to the question of God nd eternity. As Edurd Schweizer put it, perhps we re to understnd tht Jesus merely intended to sy it is not fitting to exchnge compliments when discussing mtter which concerns God nd no other (The Good News According to Mrk [Atlnt: John Knox, 1970], 210). Impertives Jesus response to the welthy mn consists of five impertives: go, sell wht you own, nd give the money to the poor, nd you will hve tresure in heven; then come, follow me (v. 21). Leving ll When Peter climed tht he nd the others hd left ll to follow Jesus, he wsn t necessrily sying they hd sold everything they owned: homes nd fishing bots were probbly understood s communl property of n extended fmily. Jmes nd John left their fther Zebedee in the bot with the hired men, nd followed him (Mrk 1:20). Though Peter nd Andrew lso left nd followed Jesus, they lter hosted Jesus t their home (Mrk 1:29). 6 Nurturing Fith October 11, 2015

The Hrdest Question by Tony Crtlege The Hrdest Question is designed to support The Bible Lesson by Tony Crtlege, printed in Bptists Tody. You cn subscribe to either the digitl or print edition of Bptists Tody to ccess the lessons. Plese lso ensure tht ech person in your clss hs copy of Bptists Tody so they cn prepre before the lesson. Does Jesus expect everyone to sell everything before we cn enter the kingdom? Reders often struggle with this story, wondering bout its implictions. Does Jesus commnd to the welthy mn pply to us, too? Does God expect ll believers to give everything they hve to the poor nd become destitute themselves before they cn follow Jesus nd inherit eternl life? If such were the cse, there would be very few followers, either then or now. We note from the Gospels tht Jesus spoke to people s individuls, nd concerned himself with ech person s prticulr needs. Jesus clled mny persons to discipleship, but this is the only instnce in the gospel in which he told someone to sell everything nd give it to the poor before following him. When Jesus clled the 12 disciples, he chllenged them to leve their current occuptions behind nd follow him, but sid nothing of possessions. In the light of Jesus demnd to the welthy mn, Peter sought to justify himself nd the others by sying Look, we hve left everything nd followed you, nd Jesus didn t diminish ny scrifices the Twelve hd mde. Still, none of the Gospels sy tht he required them to liquidte their possessions before following him. Some, such s the fishermn, probbly owned little personl property tht wsn t shred with the lrger fmily. Others, such s Mtthew, would hve hd greter mens. Mtthew left his job s tx collector to follow Jesus: whether he lso left his money to the poor is not stted. For wht ws probbly brief time fter Jesus scension nd the dy of Pentecost, it ws common for believers in Jeruslem to sell personl property s needed in order to ssist others in the believing community, but there is no indiction tht everyone sold everything: They would sell their possessions nd goods nd distribute the proceeds to ll, s ny hd need (Acts 2:44-45). How long this lsted we do not know, but Pul ws often concerned with collecting n offering for the poor sints in Jeruslem (1 Cor. 16:1-4, 2 Cor. 8:1-9:15, Rom 15:25-29). Although mny of the erly believers my hve been poor to begin with nd there were times of fmine in the lnd, the erly prctice of liquidting ssets my hve proven to be short sighted. While Pul encourged believers in Corinth, Rome, nd elsewhere to contribute generously to the needs of believers in Jeruslem, he did not instruct them to sell their goods nd live communlly. Indeed, prt of Pul s strtegy seems to hve been to seek out welthier persons, such s Lydi in Phillipi (Acts 16:40) nd Json in Thesslonic (Acts 17:1-9), people of mens who could host the church in their homes. 7 Nurturing Fith October 11, 2015

The Hrdest Question continued The welthy mn of Mrk 10:17-22 seems to hve been so ttched to his possessions tht Jesus knew they would lwys hve first plce in his llegince. Aln Culpepper writes, For this mn t lest, selling his possessions nd giving to the poor were bound up with wht it would men for him to follow Jesus. The importnt element, however, is the lst, tht he follow Jesus (Mrk, Smyth & Helwys Commentries [Mcon: Smyth & Helwys, 2007], 337). Tht is not to sy we should not give serious considertion to the implictions of Jesus demnd. Americns live in such consumerist-oriented culture tht we sometimes fil to relize how mterilistic we re, nd how much in bondge to the debt required to furnish ourselves with luxuries tht we hve come to think of s necessities. We consume fr more thn our shre of the world s resources nd complin when the ir conditioner goes on the fritz, while millions of people suffer from hunger worldwide nd thousnds of impoverished people in Indi nd Pkistn die from the rvges of het wve. If Jesus does not demnd tht we sell ll to follow him, wht does he expect of us? Would he hve us re-evlute our cquisitive culture nd definitions of success? Would he hve us reconsider wht we imgine to be needs nd think more of others who live in desperte poverty? Culpepper sks, ppropritely: How would the qulity of our lives spiritully, emotionlly, nd mterilly be improved if we took strong steps towrd living by the priorities nd vlues implicit in Jesus techings? Who knows, cmel might yet mke it through the eye of needle! God is still chnging lives nd redeeming humnity (Mrk, 360). 8 Nurturing Fith October 11, 2015
