Not tht he needed to be snctified but by his entering into the wters he snctified the wters; nd by displying his humility s one who ws rich to become poor so we cn identify with him. He entered into our humn wekness to mke us rich in the inheritnce of spiritul gifts nd divine grces. We re bptised into the life of Christ s sons nd dughters of God. This is the mening of rebirth to be born gin of the spirit nd to be born from bove. We re by our humnness mortl but by our bptism we become divine by the grce of God nd henceforth shre immortlity or eternity. Bptism is Scrment of Fith (CCC 1214). St Thoms Aquins further tells us tht this fith is gift freely given without ny explntion or merit. For those who hve fith no explntion is needed for those who don t no explntion is possible. Sometimes God sends people into our lives nd we respond in fith to their presence without questions. Three Mircles of Fith: About three yers go I ws clled to visit young girl who hd fourth stge leukemi. The first mircle ws the fith of Mrs Jennifer Yeo who clled me when my phone hd not been working the whole dy nd when I hd mnged to fix it her cll cme through! She hd cted on fith s her first cll to me ws lte t night t the moment my phone ws working. A second mircle cme few dys lter. When I first met the ptient she ws t first very ngry nd even violent. But fter few visits nd winning her over by listening tlking nd prying with her she ws opened to be bptised s Christine. In this new life she found the strength nd pece to fce deth with Jesus holding her hnds nd she knew tht she ws not lone. Jesus be with me were her words of solce nd strength. Indeed these were words of fith. She returned to the Lord on the fest of Epiphny tht yer. The support nd love shown to her by her fmily friends nd church members touched her fmily. Two yers lter her prents who were not Christins were lso bptised into the church. This ws the third mircle of fith. Wht does bptism do for us? In her bptism Christine become God s own beloved child which enbled her to hve the bility to trnscend her fers nd limittions of pin nd deth becuse Jesus hs given her the ssurnce of fith nd eternl life. And to ll bptised Christins Jesus lso gives us the fith to believe in him nd in ll tht he teches to become children of God nd be loved by God. Bptism opens the door to other scrments nd grces. When Jesus ws bptised by John the Bptist the doors of heven were opened. And the grces he bestowed on us were poured down on us to give us the strength to ber hrdship nd hve the fortitude to endure suffering. It does not mke us become superhumns but gives us the grce to be humn with supernturl power to trnscend the limits plced on us in this world. The grce of bptism gives us the mindset tht we cn do ll things becuse of Christ who loves nd strengthens me. (Phil 4:13). Hope hs two beutiful dughters: their nmes re nger nd courge. Anger tht things re the wy they re. Courge to mke them the wy they ought to be. St Augustine Even when things do not go our wy nd we re ngry we need not despir. To be child of God is to know tht we re loved nd tht gives us hope nd courge. Our bptism into the life of Christ is bot given us to ride through the serene river of life nd courge to overcome the rough rpids tht we encounter long the wy. All we hve to do is to hold on to our fith nd sty strong nd to hve fith in the wters of bptism. Every yer the Society of St Vincent De Pul (SSVP) hosts Christms prty for Friends In Need (FINs). On 2 December members nd bout 120 FINs comprising elderly nd other low-income beneficiries gthered for n evening of festing nd fun. This is specil time where ll our FINs gther so tht members cn better bond with everyone nd spred the true Spirit of Christms. The prty kicked off with blessings from Fr Mtthew Tn SJ followed by fun gmes segment. FINs were involved in building the tllest cupcke tower nd guessing song lyrics nd the price of groceries. Mny lso belted out fvourite kroke songs nd impressed us with their cool dnce moves. Dinner ws followed by Bingo firm crowd fvourite where everyone went home with heftier wllet. It ws memorble event for FINs nd meningful one for members. This Christms prty for the FINs is one of the mny projects tht the SSVP conference t the Church of St Igntius undertkes. Initilly the themes (Three Breths to Live The Wild Trinity Co-lbouring with Us nd The Audcious Drem of God) seemed little strnge nd mystifying. However s the tlks progressed they becme more meningful nd purposeful. Fr Michel Hnsen used Igntin spiritul exercises to guide us to meditte on God s breth over the first molecule of wter He creted the vitl source for ll living things. Ech time we drink wter we become prt of the beginning of cretion nd God s grnd plns for us. of During the seson of Advent St Igntius Church Advent preprtion from 10 to 12 December enter into time of nticiption witing nd As we pondered on the first breth tken by our Risen Christ in the tomb t the moment of Resurrection we experienced the breth of new life s we die to our old self nd rise to new spiritul life in Christ. We lso reflected on the numerous grces tht God hs blessed us with over the pst yer nd the res where we hve fllen short. With new light nd new fith we brethe God s breth in His beutiful cretion of the world s we journey from drkness to light. On the second night Fr Hnsen guided us with scripture reflections nd smll group discussions nd shring on the wys in which the Trinity works nd co-lbours with us in our erthly nd spiritul lives our reltionships our work nd our Christin mission on erth. In the third tlk Fr Colin Tn Three Breths to Live By Fr Michel Hnsen I ws intrigued when we were instructed to bring glss nd wter bottle to the first dy. The mystery ws reveled when Fr Michel Hnsen sked us to blow over wter in the glss while reflecting on the breth of the Spirit working t the point of cretion nd reviewing the events in our lives over the pst yer. The second breth of Jesus ws focused on three significnt explined tht God s pln is for His cretion to live with Him in his hevenly home for eternity but given the sin of Adm nd Eve we needed to be redeemed nd sved. In His immense Mercy nd Love God s unthinkble wesome nd udcious pln is to protect us from the evil one to shre in His life by becoming one of us nd by his dying nd resurrection to sve us from the snres of the second deth of eternl dmntion. God so loved the world He gve His only Son. John 4:9. So do we like Zccheus lep with joy to welcome our Lord nd Sviour Jesus into our spiritul bode with herts of conversion repentnce nd reconcilition? I relise tht I hve role to ply nd I too need to "co-work" nd collborte with The Trinity if I wnt to find mening nd joy in my reltionships with others. I ws sking myself Wht nd how is my reltionship with The Trinity? Do I lwys mke the effort to co-work with The Trinity? Do I live ccording to the Trinity? I felt quite guilty I hve neglected prying to the Holy Spirit I hve not worked on being wre of my Spiritul Gifts nd I hve not lived ccording to the Spirit nd be Christ to others ll the time. If God never stops working for his cretion I should lso co-operte with The Trinity seek His grces to live ccording to the Spirit nd be Christ especilly to the difficult people which is lwys chllenge! My own definition of wild is to let loose nd put some humour into my spiritul life s I m sure God wnts me to be joyful including Joy in Suffering. 5 Home in our Prish TEXT: MELANIE SAY Home Visit Seven of us from NCC Zone B Dist 1 (stnding lst row) hosted n fternoon te buffet for residents of St Theres's Home on 13 November. We presented smll gifts to bout 50 residents who were in high spirits s we served mingled nd bntered with them. A Visit to Our Ldy Prctised by Filipino Romn Ctholics Simbng Gbi lso clled Mis de Gllo ws orgnised by the Filipino prish communities in Singpore. The theme ws LITANY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY Mother Most Chste. Our church hosted the 5th night on 19 December. Mss ws celebrted by Fr Reymond Snchez SJ nd sung by Vox Ludete reminding us of the spirit of Christms s we re wy from our fmilies. The Philippine Ambssdor His Excellency Joseph Del Mr Yp lso ttended. A short mel fellowship followed the mss. TEXT: DR CHARLES NG I ws the orgniser of smll group of prishioners from St Igntius Church who went on pilgrimge to the Shrine of Our Ldy of Gudlupe in Mexico City in October Sixteen intrepid pilgrims defied the risk of erthqukes to visit the Shrine with Fr Colin Tn s our Spiritul Director. Our Ldy of Gudlupe is the Ptron Sint of South Americ. In the 15th Century Jun Diego n Indin pesnt met Our Ldy when he ws in the mountin nd she told him to build church for her there. But being poor nd ignornt he did not know wht to do. So he told his priest who did not believe him. When he went up the mountin she ppered gin nd sked him wht hppened. He told her tht the priest did not believe him. He then went to see the Bishop but ws dismissed. He tried to void the mountin. On his wy to see his ill uncle she ppered gin nd sked him why he ws voiding her. He told her he ws on his wy to see his uncle nd tht the Bishop did not believe him. She told him tht his uncle ws not sick ny more nd to return to the Bishop. The Bishop told Jun tht he wnted sign from Our Ldy. So he went up the mountin gin nd Our Ldy told him to go to the top nd with his clok or telm gther the flowers he would find there nd bring it to the Bishop. When Jun opened his tilm out fell beutiful fresh roses. It ws winter. At this the Bishop fell on his knees nd believed. Pictured on the tilm ws Ldy in white nd blue pregnnt with roses nd crown of strs nd ngels in the hevens bove her hed. To this dy the originl tilm is hung in the Bsilic of the Church t the Shrine of Gudlupe. People from ll round hve come to sk for fvours including cures for sickness. Most recently Mrs Jennifer Yeo shred tht she ws clered of her metsttic cncer growths fter prying there. We wnted to shre our experience nd convinced Fr Colin to hve picture of Our Ldy of Gudlupe which is now hung in the witing re of the Confessionl t St Igntius. For they hd put side everything to focus on looking for Bby Jesus by following. I could not help but think tht this is how our elderly prishioners nd the sick must hve felt when they decided to ttend the specil Christms Mss t St Igntius Church on 28 December. It ws love for Bby Jesus tht hd brought them. There must hve been mny Christms gtherings they hd ttended in the pst where food nd gifts mttered most. But now older nd wiser mteril gifts would not be s importnt s the love they hve for Jesus nd the love showered on them when fmilies nd cregivers took time off to bring them to ttend the Christms Mss. Surely the volunteers who wited ptiently to guide them into the Church hd love in their herts. And when the DVC youth choir sng O Holy Night love ws indeed plpble. One could imgine the quiet strry night under which Bby Jesus ws born nd crdled in the rms of his loving Mother. Indeed love ws in his hert when Fther Mtthew reclled his childhood in his homily. He shred his memories of life with his fmily nd how the love he experienced shped him nd sprked him to do the sme for his fellowmen. Energized by the spiritul food they hd just received everyone tucked into the sumptuous spred tht followed with gret enjoyment. Fun ws their focus now s they creened round the Plce of Gthering singing crols nd dncing to choruses of Jingle Bells nd sleigh bells nd Rudolph. There ws no doubt tht the DVC Choir who provided the music were hving s much fun s everyone else. And when Snt Clus brvely donned his hevy ttire in the hot Singpore wether to bring gifts for everyone there ws much cheer nd rejoicing. This yer Sntrin mde her very first ppernce in cute red outfit with mtching shoes to entertin nd delight everyone. In his homily Fr Colin ccentuted the importnce of being united in the love of Jesus in spirit of forgiveness. He led us to recll the mny times when we experienced forgiveness grciousness nd God s blessings in These words brought to mind n incident tht occurred in My when I returned to bording school fter term brek. We were on the second dy of our school cmp. Wking up t sunrise our group begn strenuous uphill hike in the hinterlnds of the Glss House Mountins in Queenslnd. A gruelling 6-hour trek led us to our new cmpsite. Just s we unloded our ruckscks our fcilittor received phone cll. After brief converstion with our techer he informed us tht cmp hd been clled off but ws unble to provide ny dditionl informtion. The news drsticlly chnged the mood of the group. We were unsettled nd nxious. Upon returning to cmp bse we gthered in the dining re. After the finl group returned it ws reveled tht one of clssmtes ws involved in n ccident while ttempting the high ropes course. He ws rushed to hospitl by helicopter. He ws in criticl condition nd in com. My hert snk. The bus trip bck to school ws fr cry from the one on the wy to the cmp. A hevy sdness weighed on us. When we entered the school grounds the bus stop ws pcked with techers nd prents who were lso distrught. Students disembrked nd flew into their prents embrce unble to hold bck their ters. I rushed up to the dorm nd clled home. By evening the story hd mde the news hedlines in Queenslnd nd cross the country. I becme imptient to lern more bout my friend s stte. I serched every news rticle hoping to cling to ny sign tht his condition ws improving. But every rticle did not tell me nything more thn wht I lredy knew: my friend ws in criticl condition. Anger begn to tke hold of me. I wnted to blme someone. Exhusted from the torrent of emotions ll I could do ws pry tht I will her some good news in the morning. Hence I ws encourged to lern the next dy tht the prents of the boy were sking for our pryers nd not demnding nswers. It gve me sense of hope telling me to focus on offering support in whtever little wy I could. In the mornings we would gther in the chpel to pry for him. In clss we mde crds for him s wy of expressing our pryers nd thoughts. Prents formed pryer groups including my prents in Singpore nd lso support groups to help his fmily in their time of distress. Lter on I discovered tht other Ctholic schools in Queenslnd offered pryers for my friend nd our school community. This incident not only brought together the Mrist nd Ctholic communities it showcsed the Christin spirit of spreding the love of Jesus. All of us re grteful tht our friend is now bck with us. We hd thnksgiving mss for him when he returned. Wht is truly mzing is tht there re no noticeble injuries. We witnessed our Lord s blessings s we shred the burden together. I hve come to understnd tht it is by being united in Christ s love tht we cll on God s blessings.
