1 Chllenges Buck to open debte Burch vows to ignore A.S. Council censure By RCK MALASPNA Chllenging A.S. Pres. Mike Buck to n open debte nd ccusing him nd certin A.S council members of discrediting the ttorney generl s office, A.S. Attorney Generl Steve Burch yesterdy vowed to ignore Wednesdy s council censure of him. " m not going to roll over, prostrte myself nd crwl into the grve for Mike Buck nd his people or ny mbitious member of student council," Burch told the Sprtn Dily yesterdy. " pln to ignore council s censure," dded Burch. Confronted by Burch s chrges, Buck sid, " hve never been involved in council ction." He sserted tht he hd no control over recent investigtion finding Burch in violtion of his duty. Ac reported yesterdy, forml council investigtion reveled tht Burch hs: violted the intent of his office by becoming personlly involved in politicl issues, mde public his personl bises on severl issues, prticulrly on the recent A.S. inititive regrding funding of instructionlly relted progrms, hs withheld from council members A.S. Judiciry records required to be mdevilble to them on request. Burch ctegoriclly responded to nd denied ech chrge. The first chrge mintined tht Burch hs hd to remove himself or be removed by Judiciry becuse of personl bis. Specificlly citing lst semester s Fntsy Fire issue, Burch explined both Judiciry nd council pproved his removl from the cse. The Fntsy Fire issue concerned whether sponsorship of the Fire should go to Student Community nvolvement P r og rm (SCP) or the A.S. Explining tht he held personl opinions bout Bill Becker, coordintor of SCP. Judiciry to select Chief Justice nd discuss Burch s proposl tody A.S. Judiciry will meet t 3 p.m. tody to select Chief Justice nd discuss restrining orders nd injunctions. A.S. Attorney Generl Steve Burch will mke the proposl for restrining orders nd injunctions. Burch s mesure is to give ny two judiciry members the uthority to sign n in- Food: junction order. An injunction order would give the ttorney generl "the power to strt or stop something," sid Burch. A restrining order is issued to keep something unchnged until there hs been decision upon n ppliction for n injunction Burch would like n injunction to lst seven dys. "This would be just temporry thing until the grieving prty cn go before Judiciry," he sid. Judiciry ws unble to nme new Chief Justice lst week becuse it could not get quorum. Former Chief Justice Bo Pitsker left school recently, leving the post vcnt. becuse " wnted to mke sure fir forum ws held." Regrding his involvement in the recent inititive, Burch contended tht Article Four of the A.S. Constitution grnts the ttorney generl the right to initite politicl ction. The rticle sys the executive brnch of government nd the ttorney generl "shll dminister the ffirs of the Associted Students." "The president nd the council were intimidting the Athletic Deprtment the Music Deprtment, the Sprtn Dily, thretening to cut funds," sid Burch. " felt tht somebody should spek up, tht Mr. Buck did not hve the power, did Angel ttorneys ccept 1 2 jurors By BARBARA EVANS Specil to the Dily The lborious process of selecting 12 tnettive jurors for the Angel Dvis tril ws completed yesterdy, only to hve two of the pnel dismissed by prosecution peremptory chllenges. n surprise move, Miss Dvis ttorneys indicted they would not chllenge the 12 originl jurors who hve undergone two rounds of intensive questioning during the pst eight dys. "As presently constituted, the defense will ccept the jury," defense ttorney Leo Brnton sid when given the opportunity to dismiss jurors without cuse. Both the prosecution nd defense re llowed 20 peremptory chllenges ech. Prosecutor Albert Hrris used his first chllenge to dismiss Mrs. Ruth Ruth, the secretry who never herd of Angel Dvis until clled for jury duty, nd Mrs. Alice Everts, n ccounting clerk. Clled s replcements were Phillip Russell, former SJS economics student, nd Nichols Getni, n ccountnt. Finl questioning of the lst two jurors. Mrs. Stephnie Ryon nd Mrs. Mry Chrlton, ws completed during the morning session, nd the strt of the peremptory chllenges begn fter the noon recess. As ech prospective juror ws dismissed, the clerk of the court drew replcement nmes from drum contining the nmes of those who were clled for jury duty in this cse. Both Russell nd Getni went through their first nd second questioning before ny other jurors were dismissed. Judge Richrd E. Arnson indicted tht he will follow this procedure, thus keeping ll the sets in the jury box filled. Russell, who replced petite, blonde Mrs. Ruth, told the court he hd ttended SJS for three yers, fter ttending severl re junior colleges. Upon being sked his mritl sttus, Russell replied, " ve never been mrried. ve been engged couple of times, though." "Never quite mde it?" inquired defense ttorney Leo Brnton, Jr. "No, they didn t," Russell commented to lughing courtroom. Russell, fter some questioning s to his ttitudes on Blcks, Communists, nd his understnding of the presumption of innocence, ws pssed by both the prosecution nd defense. Getni, son of Sicilin immigrnts, underwent more stringent questioning on his ttitude ond opinions towrds Blcks. "Why do you think it took so long for Blcks to brek into the mjor legues?" most importnt spect By LARRY MAUTER nd LSA McKANEY Second of Three Prts Although cmping equipment is mjor nvestment nd necessry for n enjoyble outing, there is nother importnt spect of cmping --the food. Wht foods to et while cmping will not be discussed becuse this is very personl thing- -you et wht you like s long s you cn crry it nd store it properly. We will discuss, however, the vlue of the food tht is tken on cmping trip, s compred to wht is cooked t home. Cooking equipment while cmping is not lwys, but should be, different from tht used in n ll -electric kitchen. Cooking on smll one -or two -burner gs stoves llows better choice of cmpsites. The stoves cn be moved into shelter wy from wind or rin, nd re clener nd quicker to use thn wood fire. n ddition to gsoline stoves, there re lcohol, kerosene nd butne stoves. A cn of solid fuel my lso be used by plcing the lighted fuel under n elevted wire grill on which the pots re plced. Kerosene is less flmmble thn gsoline, but is hrder to light, smelly nd gresy. Alcohol is hevier nd less efficient thn gsoline. Butne hs bout the sme heting vlue s gsoline, but must be kept in pressure crtridges. When cmping bove timberline, cooking procedures re just bout the sme s for snow cmping. Cooking must be done on gsoline, lcohol or butne stoves. f you hit the tril right fter brekfst, tke it esy the first hlf hour until your stomch is prtly emptied. Another thing to consider is the digestibility of food in reltion to physicl exertion. Ft slows digestion nd should be voided t brekfst or lunch when you do extensive hiking. Protein digests fster, but remins in the stomch for some time, which is undesirble before climb. The Sierr Club Wilderness Hndbook sys crbohydrtes re digested in the intestine nd re the best thing to nibble on the tril or use for fuel before quick strt. The body does not digest ny food well when tired. At the end of hrd dy, don t sit right down nd gorge yourself. "Drink cup of te or beef broth, relx for hlf n hour, nd then go into some solid food with enhnced ppetite nd improved gstric powers," sttes the editor of the Wilderness Hndbook, Dvid Brower. t is better to nibble often during thective prt of the dy thn to consume few lrge mels. Get into the "morning -brunch, fternoon -snck" hbit. Lod up in the evening nd lter t night if you re still hungry. Light weight nd low bulk re of primry concern on ll but very short trips. To chieve this, keep the wter content of foods to minimum, eliminte hevy pckging mterils, nd void excessive ir inside of pckges. This mens the use of dehydrted foods, repckging most of the food in polyethylene bgs- -tin cns dd 15 to 25 per cent to the weight of the contents nd crdbord pckges 5 to 10 per cent --nd voiding low -density items such s corn flkes or sod crkers. Another wy to reduce weight is to increse the use of ft, such s bcon grese or mrgrine, becuse ft hs over twice s mny clories per ounce s protein or crbohydrte. Even so, the diet probbly will contin lower proportion of ft thn usul, since there re few rich suces nd desserts. f both minimum weight nd minimum price re importnt, dequte high qulity protein cn be provided by using dditionl powdered milk, powdered eggs, nd dry cheese. This is not intended s n ll-inclusive guide for the novice cmper. Rther, we will concentrte on severl spects of cmping, ttempting to show you don t hve to be Dniel Boone to enjoy the wilderness. For people who wnt to get into the technicl spects of bckpcking, there re severl good books, mong them, the Sierr Club Wilderness Hndbook nd the Mountineering Hndbook. Experience on the tril cn be the best instructor of ll. Looking bck, mny people feel ner -disstrous situtions re highly instructionl. t hs been sid tht life is lerning experience. To this, we might dd, bckpcking is one of the more plesurble lerning experiences offered. When plnning wilderness trip, it is often necessry to fmilirize yourself with the terrin through which you will trvel. One wy you cn do this is to spek to people who re fmilir with given re. Question them bout trils, cmpsites, wter, etc. A second wy to lern n re is to study mp. The U.S. Geogrphicl Service provides topogrphicl mps for ny prt of the United Sttes. These mps my be purchsed for smll cost. Mpreding isn t nerly s difficult s is sometimes thought. One importnt concept to keep in mind is to visulize the lnd from the contours shown on the mp. Gets survey mp of n re tht is fmilir to you. To mny, wilderness trvel s wht bckpcking is ll. bout. The thrill of rounding corner to find mjestic view is much of the rewrd one receives for his troubles. One or two points should be mde concerning the method of hiking used in the wilderness. not hve the right to intimidte these people," he dded. " felt hd the power s ttorney generl to do it." To the ccustion of withholding Judiciry records, Burch sid tht council members re entitled to exmine only Judiciry decisions, not cse records. Three weeks go, Councilmn Bill Jeske sserted tht Burch hd refused to llow him to exmine such records. "Mr. Jeske sked for privte records nd ws refused," contended Burch. To llow council members to view privte records, sid Burch, would be direct violtion of his duty specified in Act 36 of the A.S. Constitution. chief defense ttorney Howrd Moore, Jr., sked Getni, n dmitted sports follower who holds B.S. in physicl eduction. "t ws probbly the owners themselves who were their Blck s enemies, not the plyers," replied Getni, dding tht the owners probbly thought they would lose money. Moore then sked why there were no coches or mngers in the mjor legues. Getni sid he didn t know nd proceeded to point out severl Blck coches in pro bsketbll nd footbll. Not to be outdone, Moore dded to the list. At the conclusion of his questioning, Hrris dded new nme nd Judge Arneson supplied the tem he plyed for. Getni, 45, explined tht his prents hd lso experienced some rcil bis when he ws child in smll town in Connecticut. "The Polish nd tlin people in tht town used to hve kind of hrd time becuse they were foreigners nd didn t spek the lnguge," Getni remrked. Getni, Willow Glen resident, pointed out under questioning tht he hd coched s well s plyed on rcilly mixed tems. The portly nd blding ccountnt ws lso Closely questioned on his feeling towrds Communism, nd his opinions on the events t the Mnn County Courthouse. Miss Dvis is fcing murder, kidnp, nd conspircy chrges stemming from shootout there in August of "Miss Dvis hs the priviledge of believing wht she wnts," Getni told the court. "She should be ble to tech s long s she s teching the subject she is supposed to. t relly doesn t mtter wht she believes," he dded in response to question on his ttitude towrd Miss Dvis firing from UCLA. "Any killing or ny deth, especilly when it hppens like tht, is trgic," Getni sid in explining his views on the events in Mnn. " know there ws deth, killing, but don t know if it ws murder. There isn t ny evidence yet to prove tht," he dded. Mrs. Ryon, nother former SJS student, underwent lengthy questioning by the defense. Under questioning by defense ttorney Doris Brin Wlker, Mrs. Ryon reveled she hd left SJS in order to work. She stted she hd no prejudice ginst Blcks or Communists, nd didn t think Miss Dvis extensive eduction would bother her judgment of the cse. Blonde Mrs. Ryon lso told the court she hd no objection to the $1,000 dontion of the Presbyterin Church to Miss Dvis defense fund. "f the Presbyterin Church wnted to donte money to Miss Dvis defense fund, it would be Christin ct," she replied. of cmping A bckpcker should trvel t relxed pce, pce you will be ble to mintin throughout the dy. To strt out t ccelerted pce is mistke not only becuse you will tire quickly, but lso becuse you re probbly hiking to enjoy the surroundings, nd you re bound to miss lot if you re cruising long in high ger. n estblishing cmpsite, sfety should be of prime considertion. Avoid res of possible rock or snow slide. Sty wy from creekbeds. f it rins, you could find yourself floting downstrem. Beyond sfety, comfort nd convenience should be the primry trgets in picking cmpsites. Select site tht is close to wter source. Check out the vilbility of firewood. When night flls, you ll pprecite the wrmth smll fire cn provide. Be sure to prepre your bedsite before nightfll. Smll rocks nd sticks will cuse discomfort if they end up under your sleeping bg. A most importnt fct in breking cmp is to be sure your cmpfire is thoroughly drowned. f you cover your fire with dirt, be sure there is no combustible mteril mixed in with the soil. n ddition to wht ws previously mentioned in the first prt of this story, we will continue our comprison of Skyline sporting goods store nd the two surplus stores tomorrow. Experimentl College is now offering clsses in bckpcking nd rock climbing. There is no tuition nd both clsses re still open to enrollment. The clsses will cover technique, equipment nd possible hike sites. n ddition, field trips in both clsses re plnned. For more informtion, cll Aln Shnks or Pete Grci t

Tht mens Chicno news hs tken up 6 per cent of the Dily news hole (excluding editoril, sports nd entertinment pges). 6 per And Chicnos mke up cent of the student body (bout 1,3 lst semester). Chicnos lso clim tht they -s Chicnos --hve different viewpoint nd must write their own news. But the fct is most Chicno news hs been writen by two reporters on our stff --Fred Corre Both re nd Dvid J. Zpt. Chicnos. Briefly put then, we hve covered Chicno news substntilly nd firly, we hve provided for the Mno Mno column weekly on our editoril pge, nd we hve printed letters from Chicno students. So why re the Chicno leders demnding spce? Very simply, they wnt to control prt of your pper so they cn use it for their politicl propgnd. The ide isn t unique. Every specil interest group --from conservtives to rdicls, or different college deprtments, or even the politicl cmps of A.S. Pres. Mike Buck nd A.S. Attorney Generl Steve Burch, etc.- -would love their own specil spce in the Dily to print their public reltions propgnd s they see fit. But if tht is ever llowed to hppen, your dily pper will become n innocuous piece of grbge. All those who respect free nd independent press relize this fct. And we s journlists prticulrly cherish press tht is obligted to no specil interests or politicl influence. Only in this wy cn we live up to the trdition of sorting the newsworthy from the politicl or public reltions hogwsh. Only this wy cn we represent you --our 25,000 reders --in the fir nd imprtil mnner you deserve. We would like SJS students to remember seven nmes when A.S. elections roll round lter this semester. They re: Mtt Cusimno Rudy Leonrdi Rich Overstreet Dvid Piper Lind Stewrt Debbie Wigely Steve Wong These re the seven council members who Wednesdy voted -out of sheer ignornce or for politicl gin or both --to endorse Chicno demnds for spce llotments nd specil editorship on the Sprtn Dily. We believe your "representtives" let you down. Just remember it. The council vote ws to endorse Chicno demnds for: One qurter pge of the Sprtn Dily every dy to publish wht they plese in whichever wy they choose. Estblishment of specil "Chicno Pge Editor," selected presumbly by Chicnos. The council vote hd no power behind it. The $40,000 subscription rte from the A.S. to the Dily is now contrcted nd cnnot betken bck. And regrdless of the vote, the Dily intends to continue its policy of serving the entire cmpus community, without bending to pressure from specil interest groups. For the demnds re nothing more thn politicl move by rdicl Chicno leders to rouse politicl Chicnos bout rllying And the Dily hs been point. selected s convenient trget. The fct is tht the Chicno leders hve picked poor trget. For in regrd to the Dily, they hve no ground upon which to stnd.
