Holdren #66, Charles F. Althouse #164, Kyle M. Mears #415 Saturday November 14, 2009 was an exciting day across the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction and the Valley of Cambridge. On that day the 31 and 32 were conferred by all Valleys at the same time. The Valley of Cambridge had 31 candidates, Ohio 455, and the Northern Jurisdiction in excess of On Monday November 9, after the Valley s Lodge of Perfection meeting, the 4 was conferred in the auditorium to a good crowd who came to support the candidates and enjoy the fellowship and refreshments that followed. Ill Milton O. Law, 33, the class honoree, was on hand both days to offer words of encouragement to the new Scottish Rite Masons and reflect upon his Masonic journey. The degree work on Saturday was enjoyed by an enthusiastic crowd and an excellent lunch was served by the Eastern Star to about 130 members and guests. Entertainment was provided by the Cordial Chorus, a men s group from Cambridge, who has more than a few Scottish Rite Members in their group. Larry Hamlin, of Manassas, VA, presented the Valley with a flag that flew over the Pentagon in honor of the many military veterans of the Valley of Cambridge. Following lunch a 60 year Scottish Rite certificate was presented to Charles Eldon Drake and 50 year certificates to John A. McCoy, Jason E. Webster, and Stanley D. Reed. The support of these long time Masons is surely appreciated and we were glad they could be with us to recognize their years of service. The 31 members of the Fall Reunion Class represented 21 Masonic Lodges. Somerset #76 led the way with 5 members followed by Pomeroy-Racine #164 and Shade River #453 with 3 each and Frazeysburg #490 and Belpre #602 with 2 each. 2 WINTER 2009/2010 VALLEY NEWS AND VIEWS PAGE 2 FROM THE SECRETARY S DESK It seems that a lot has happened since the last newsletter, but I know that it has only been a few months. One of the most exciting times was the fall reunion with its format of 4 on Monday followed by the 31 and 32 on Saturday. The lunch, 50 and 60 year certificate presentations, entertainment, and Larry Hamlin s recognition of the military veterans of the Valley made for an enjoyable time. Attendance at these events was very good and judging by the size of the class the Valley s support and enthusiasm was also very good. Thrice Potent Master David Mourer had a program for our October Lodge of Perfection meeting. Art Scott, a veteran of D-Day, talked of his experiences during World War II. He had many interesting articles to show us and talk about, but his most interesting observation was that he went into the Army at 19 years old thinking that he would live forever and came out as a 22 year old knowing that was not true. While we are reflecting on veterans, I would like to note that Judge David A. Ellwood, 33 was the featured speaker at Guernsey County Veterans Day observation and his thoughts inspired a very good crowd at the Courthouse to reflect upon what this country owes the countless veterans for their sacrifices large and small. On September 29 Dan Arnold, Membership Chairman, hosted a meeting with the Area and Lodge Representatives of the Valley. This was the FREE AUDITORIUM PERFORMANCES FREE On Wednesday March 24, 2009 the Cambridge Lions Club s Variety Show will be at the Auditorium. This will be the 37 th year for the Lions variety show and once again it promises to provide an entertaining evening of music and shenanigans. The Cambridge Concert Association will present Dwight Lenox and Trio on Sunday April 18, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. at the Scottish Rite Auditorium. Dwight Lenox Trio s fluid style lends itself to a vast repertoire. Dwight s career has taken him from New York to Los Angles and once you hear this vocalist you will agree that he is a gifted artist. Remember all of these performances are free to Scottish Rite Members and their families. Come out and enjoy the benefit of your membership. FREE C l i p a n d S a v e FREE third year that this dinner meeting has taken place. These are 60 or so people who have stepped forward to help the Valley maintain contact with the Blue Lodges and their members for the betterment of the Valley. We use these representatives from time to time for issues such as finding addresses, finding out if there is a reason dues are not paid, helping with recruiting members, etc. I for one appreciate all that they do for us. Later in this newsletter are articles on the 2010 Grand Master s Classes, 2010 Bridges Program at the Valley of Cincinnati, and Freemasonry-It s all in the Family. Each of these items are attempts to enhance the fraternity by doing things differently. As I look at these events there are several I hope to attend and maybe I will see some of you there. Remember Abbott Scholarships are due April 1, 2010 and there is a short item about this on the last page of this newsletter. The Learning Center received a couple of nice gifts and donations lately and hopefully their fundraising efforts will be successful as they are charged with a greater responsibility to raise operating funds in the future. There are several individuals, OES Chapters, Scottish Rite Clubs, Blue Lodges that have helped and their efforts are appreciated. Jen Navicky, Director of the Cambridge Center, accepted the check from Virginia Wingett, Worthy Matron. This was one of many checks presented to various organizations in the Noble County area by Amazon Chapter at Sharon Lodge #136 F&AM. Following the check presentations a reception was held in the social hall for a full house of attendees and members of Amazon Chapter and Sharon Lodge. 4 WINTER 2009/2010 VALLEY NEWS AND VIEWS PAGE GRAND MASTER S CLASSES Grand Master Terry W. Posey has established a new style of Grand Master s Class this year with a number of important guidelines to insure that it will be a worthwhile experience. A minimum of three Lodges up to an entire District may request a dispensation to hold a Grand Master s Class between January 1, 2010 and September 30, The purpose of allowing a minimum of three Lodges to hold a Grand Master s Class is to make the class more of a local event. Lodges will be permitted to participate in only one Grand Masters Class in Each Lodge participating must have a candidate and must have at least one Brother participating in the degree work. Page 5 & 6 of this newsletter contains a petition that can be used for one of these Grand Master s Classes. It can be used at any Ohio Masonic Lodge with proper completion and signatures. Please remember that the lodges need time to process, investigate, and ballot on these petitions so do not wait until the last minute. Page 7 is a petition that can be used for candidates at the Valley of Cambridge s Spring Reunion which is scheduled for April 15 and 16, BRIDGES PROGRAM AT THE VALLEY OF CINCINNATI The Valley of Cincinnati recently announced the 2010 Bridges Program scheduled for February 6, 2010 at the Cincinnati Scottish Rite Cathedral. The 4 will be presented by the Valley of Cincinnati, 7 by Dayton, 20 by Columbus, 29 by Indianapolis, and the 30 by the Southern Jurisdiction s Covington, Kentucky Scottish Rite Bodies.
