3 Special Plans in Store for Spring Class The Valley of Cincinnati has some awesome extras for participants Ready for a King s Feast at lunchtime? We thought so. The Spring Class will feature the 16º during the membership luncheon, where cast members will be situated throughout the dining room and all in attendance will be able to join along in the choral music during the degree. The Syrian Shrine Oriental Band will also participate and help set the tone for an enjoyable degree. Need more? A special 200th anniversary banquet will follow the 32. This is a return to an evening meal to wind down the day something we haven t done in several years. We will honor those earning service awards, present Brown Jewels to class builders, and more. Read on to learn more about our great class-building incentives. Dinner will also feature brief and entertaining multimedia presentations about the origins of the Scottish Rite and the history of the Valley of Cincinnati. Ill. Bro. William R. Powers, Jr., 33º, Deputy for Ohio, will close the evening with comments, after which the members of the 200th Anniversary Class will retire to the balcony to receive their commemorative pocket jewels (an example is shown at left). Brethren, the ultimate fraternal experience awaits! Class-building incentives Those who sign the top line of five or more petitions will have their Scottish Rite dues remitted for the following year. Those who sign the top line of three petitions will earn a bicentennial pocket jewel. Those who sign the top or bottom line on five or more petitions will receive the prestigious Brown Jewel. It is awarded to those who bring in five, ten, 25, 50 member. A unique form of recognition is reserved for creating more than 100 memberships. Masonic Lodges that generate ten or more petitions for the Spring 2013 Reunion will receive special recognition. Approximately 6,700 members will receive The Rite Recorder this month. Can you imagine what would happen if each recipient were to use the petition that appears in this issue to bring a new member into our Valley? That would be an incredible problem to have! But let s be a bit more realistic, shall we? Consider the following: If just 1% of the readership were to use the petition, the Spring Class would grow by more than 65 people. Impressive, right? Well, if just 2% were to use the petition, we d have a heck of a Spring Class with more than 130 candidates. If 10% were to use the petition, the Scottish Rite auditorium would begin to feel a bit cramped. And if 12.5% of our membership were to use the petition, the Scottish Rite auditorium would be at capacity! Basketball. Chili. Fun. Join us at the second annual March Madness Party and Chili Cookoff in Club 32 on Friday, March 22, The doors open at 10:00 a.m. and stay open until 11:00 p.m. Fill a crock pot with your favorite chili recipe and chow down with friends while you take in some college hoops. Your chili might be voted the best, and you could win a prize for it! Bowls, spoons, crackers, snacks, and drinks will be provided by the Valley of Cincinnati. The event is hosted by the Royal Highlanders. Come and spend the whole day or just a portion of it. This program is open to members, spouses, and invited guests at no charge. Donations will be accepted.
4 Lectern Among the Highlights at the Scottish Rite Museum Items donated by Scottish Rite Valleys and members are some of the most important pieces on display SUBMITTED BY DR. AIMEE E. NEWELL This year marks the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Scottish Rite s Supreme Council for the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. The first American Supreme Council was established in Charleston, SC, in In 1813, that body recognized a Supreme Council that had been formed in New York in One of the members of this group was John James Joseph Gourgas ( ). Gourgas eventually became Sovereign Grand Commander, serving from 1832 to The Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library, in Lexington, MA, actively collects objects and documents associated with Scottish Rite Freemasonry. Scottish Rite members and Valleys donated many of the objects now in our collection. One of the most eye-catching items in the collection is a lectern that DeWitt Clinton Consistory of the Valley of Grand Rapids, MI, presented to the Supreme Council in Constructed from several different woods, and inlaid with miniature Masonic symbols, the lectern shows an Egyptian Revival style and sports a book holder at top supported by the Scottish Rite s doubleheaded eagle symbol. A silver plaque on the lectern credits the design of the piece to Edgar A. Somes, the inlay to T.A. Conti, and the fabrication to Century Furniture Company and Associates. Grand Rapids, MI, was a center of American furnituremaking during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The pride that makers took in their craft is evident. Commander Leon M. Abbott ( ) received the lectern at the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction s 1931 annual meeting in Detroit. At the meeting, a representative from Michigan explained that the Egyptian style was chosen because of its connection to Masonic rituals and symbols. The Supreme Council used the lectern for many years, before it was retired to the Museum & Library for safekeeping and its preservation. The Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library is pleased to present an exhibition about the history of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, opening this summer (see our website, for more information). The lectern will be one of the objects on view. The exhibition will be up for at least a year, so start planning your visit now. If you have any Scottish Rite objects that you would like to donate to the Museum & Library s collection, please contact Aimee E. Newell, Ph.D., by at anewell@monh.org or by calling Aimee E. Newell, Ph.D., is director of collections for the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library at the National Heritage Museum.
