Kaylor, 33 FROM THE SECRETARY'S DESK By Ill Randy Clark, 33 As I write this first article, it is Thanksgiving. By now Christmas will have passed, and we will be in a new year. Thanksgiving, however, seems the perfect way to start my season of service as Executive Secretary. I want to say thank you for the many things that I appreciate at the start of this journey for me. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve our Valley and its members. One of our degrees used to include the words Give me to serve, and I am doubly blessed. I am indeed blessed to serve you, our Valley, and our Fraternity. No one could have a better job or a better place to do it. I thank the Board of Trustees for the trust and confidence they have shown in my selection. I thank them for choosing me from among a group of qualified candidates and Brothers. I have come to realize more fully in these last few months what a gifted, committed, and hard-working group of leaders we have. They are men not only of integrity and character they are men who are passionate about the Valley of Dayton and the Masonic fraternity. I am most thankful for their vision of a Valley that will remain strong well into the future. I want to say a special word of thanks for my predecessors and especially Ill. and M.W.B. James M. Williamson. During his ten years as Secretary the Valley has changed dramatically as has the building in which we live. He has been part of a leadership team that has transformed not only the building we occupy but also how we think about ourselves and our future. I have known Jim for years, and it has been my pleasure to work with him during the final months of his tenure. He has been gracious and welcoming to me and done all that he could to ensure my success as I follow him. He has, in other words, been a Brother to me and I thank him for giving me such a strong start. I thank the Supreme Architect of the Universe for our fraternity not only the Scottish Rite but Symbolic Freemasonry and the many other parts of this great Masonic family. Generations of men before us took the same obligations and built for the future that we now inhabit. I am grateful that we are the ones given the same trust to build for ourselves and those who will come after us. To appropriate our lodge installation ceremonies charge to the brethren: may our children s children celebrate with joy and gratitude what we do. Among the things for which I am most grateful is you. You the faithful members of the Valley of Dayton. You - who pay your dues and contribute to our various charities. You who attend our reunions and our events. You who sign petitions and share the Scottish Rite message with other Masons. You who wear your rings and pins proudly and announce to the world that you are Scottish Rite Masons. You are the Valley of Dayton and I am grateful that because of your fidelity we are among the leading Valleys in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. You are the Valley of Dayton and it is you who will continue to make us great. I hope I will hear from you if you have feedback, questions, concerns. I look forward to working with you in the months and years to come. J. Randolph Clark Executive Secretary

3 January SRN Page 3 WHO ARE WE AND WHERE DOES VALLEY MEMBERSHIP COME FROM? The Members of our Lodges are the Life-Blood of The Scottish Rite The greatest monarchs and most exalted heroes and patriots of all ages and countries throughout the known world have been encouragers of the royal art (i.e. Freemasonry) and many of them have presided as Grand Master of Masons in their respective jurisdictions, not thinking it any lessening of their highest dignity to level themselves with their brethren in Freemasonry and to act on the same square as they did. (Franklin Lodge #134 F&AM of PA; By-Laws, page 52, 1873 print) Historically, the fraternity membership, by and large, has been made up of average men that has included laborers, clerks, merchants, tradesmen, lawyers, enlisted and commissioned members of the armed forces, doctors, statesmen, farmers, salesmen, U.S. Presidents and numerous signers of the Declaration of Independence...the whole spectrum. Most masons are men who go about their jobs and professions with no hint that they are Masons except for the way they lead their lives. Many are recognizable today by name, face, or accomplishment. George Washington and thirteen other Presidents, 18 of the 45 U.S. Vice-Presidents and fortytwo Justices of the Supreme Court have been Masons; and there have been a multitude of men of character and integrity that have contributed in a variety of ways throughout the years; 16 of our greatest military leaders such as John Pershing; Charles Lindberg; Douglas MacArthur, Jimmy Doolittle; George Marshall. Well-known leaders of other nations, Winston Churchill, King Edward VII; and several Prime Ministers of Canada; and there have been many men from other professions who have contributed to the freedoms and social enjoyments we have the benefit of today. Men from all walks of life, Ty Cobb (baseball), Arnold Palmer (golf), George M. Cohen, Clark Gable; Rudyard Kipling, Roy Rogers, Will Rogers, William Shakespeare, John Wayne Irving Berlin, Francis Scott Key, John Phillip Sousa, Mozart, Neil Armstrong, and John Glenn, and the list goes on. The point is this; there is a distinct relationship between the past and the present. As these men all had their particular moment in time, the individual qualities and contributions of each were important in their time. It was important to not only their individual Lodges but also to those Scottish Rite Valleys of which they were members. Today, the individual qualities, and talents of each Mason, make the potential for accomplishments by the fraternity almost limitless, and as successful endeavors require original ideas, such ideas require distinct individuals. Such distinct individuals are the very essence of Masonry and the Scottish Rite. The leadership within the Lodges is well-recognized within the fraternity. Today, as in the past, these men come from all walks of life; factory workers, firefighters, police officers, the military, doctors, lawyers, mayors and councilmen, successful business owners, and administrators in a variety of professions. Each possesses a specific quality, ability or set of unique ideas. So this then answers the question, Who Are We and Where Does Valley Membership Come From? Today s leaders continue to build upon the knowledge, examples and successes of those that came before them. As a member of the Valley of Dayton and an Officer in Gabriel Lodge of Perfection, I am honored to have been in a position to learn from them and I look to the future as together we strive to ensure that we take full advantage of our point in time of masonic history; not only to further the goals of the fraternity and Scottish Rite; but to also support our communities and our various charities. To teach by example the importance of honor and integrity; of being a person on whom others can rely; of being both trusting and trustworthy; of realizing that each of us have a spiritual nature as well as a physical nature and of the importance of self-control. Masonry teaches us to reach for a higher standard in conducting our lives. It is the confines within which Masons support and strive to further advance the principles upon which this fraternity was founded so many years ago. Fraternally Bro. Clifford P. Koss, 32º, Thrice Potent Master GABRIEL LODGE OF PERFECTION

4 J a n u a r y S R N P a g e 4 Introduction to our new Executive Secretary of the Valley of Dayton I was recently asked when I first met our new Executive Secretary of the Valley of Dayton, Ill. Brother J. Randolph Clark Randy. To be honest, I couldn t remember when I first met him, because it seems like I have known him all my life. Conversely, Randy seems to know everyone in Freemasonry. I said earlier this year after Randy had been hired, If you are in Ohio Freemasonry and you don t know Randy, you re not paying attention. Randy has made several paths that all seem to intertwine. When he was a young Boy Scout, a fellow Scout told him that he was DeMolay material and that Randy might enjoy himself with that group. He took the petition home and showed his family, and to his surprise found out his father (not a Mason) had also been a DeMolay boy. Randy became impressed with the men and Masons he met and decided he wanted to become active in the boy s fraternity. And active he became, when he received the high honor of being elected State Master Councilor (presiding officer) of Ohio DeMolay. He has remained active in the Order and later received the Active Legion of Honor Award, became an Honorary Member of the International Supreme Council and currently serves as Seventh District Governor of Ohio DeMolay, having assisted his beloved son, Josiah to become Master Councilor of his Chapter. Randy later became a member of Milford Lodge # 54, F.&A.M., the Worshipful Master of Felicity Lodge # 102, and an honorary member of two lodges. He was the District Deputy Grand Master of the 6 th Masonic District in He currently maintains membership at Huber Heights #777 and N. C. Harmony #2. He has served on the Grand Lodge Committee on Youth, the Grand Lodge Committee on Education and currently serves on the the Grand Lodge Committee on Credentials. Randy is a member of all York Rite bodies, and has served as Sovereign Master of two Allied Masonic Degrees, is currently an officer of St. Columba Conclave, R.C.C. and he served Imperial Sovereign Burch Zehner as Grand Chaplain of the United Grand Imperial Council He also is a member of other invitational bodies such as York Rite Sovereign College, Irish Council-Knight Masons, the Royal Order of Scotland and an Active Member of the Ohio Lodge of Research. Our brother was a line officer of the Valley of Cincinnati and is currently a dual member of the Valley of Dayton and Valley of Cincinnati. He has served the Valley of Dayton as Chaplain since 2014 and is currently the Prior of the Ohio Council of Deliberation. He is a member of Antioch Shrine, AAONMS. Randy graduated from the University of Cincinnati where he received a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Economics. He was a Phi Beta Kappa, was the Economics Society President, and a Vorhees Scholar. Randy told me he had always been interested in spiritual things and was always interested in God and how something greater than what we can see with our eyes wide open was real. He had been a Financial Analyst at PNC Bank and later the Director of Research and Administration at the Center for Economic Education. Shortly after his oldest child was born and while working there, he attended a spiritual weekend, called the Walk to Emmaus. He left that weekend knowing that he had to settle the question of whether or not God was calling him to the ministry. He was offered a small church outside the town where he grew up as a way of testing his call. It was there that he and his wife, Dana, decided that he should leave his job with the University of Cincinnati to go to the seminary and pursue ministry full time. In 1999 he received a Master of Divinity from the United Theological Seminary. Randy has served as a Pastor of the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church since He has served at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Huber Heights since Earlier this year, Randy decided to leave the ministry under a program where an ordained pastor can retire early. He prayerfully learned more and talked with many friends about his future. He decided to take a leap of faith. He decided to retire at age 50 without another job. When Ill. Brother Williamson announced he would retire as Executive Secretary/COO of the Valley of Dayton on December 31, 2016, Randy believed he could serve his beloved fraternity. He applied for the job, as did other extremely qualified candidates, and was hired. On October 30, 2016, 30 members of the Fraternity and wives attended Randy s last service as Pastor of Aldersgate UMC. There we heard a powerful statement by a beloved pastor on how he was doing the right thing for the right reason. We talked to many members of the church at the reception following who were in tears that Randy, Dana, his two daughters and his son would no longer be with them. He truly made an imprint in the history of that church. On October 31, 2016, Randy began as our Assistant Executive Secretary/COO. He will take over the open position on January 1, Now that you know a little more about him, stop in and say hello. Fraternally Ill Terry W. Posey, 33, PGM, Chairman Executive Board, Valley of Dayton

5 Brother to Brother Calling Program January SRN Page 5 The leadership of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction and the Valley of Dayton agree that personal contact is the best way to keep our membership involved with your Valley. This is one of the most important ways we can fulfill our commitment to caring for our Brethren. In keeping with our Valley s outreach commitment we created a Brother to Brother calling program, where each member of the Valley is called on his birthday. We have started doing this for only a couple of months now but we need YOUR help. Many of the phone numbers listed in our data are not good numbers and it is hard to find the phone numbers of our membership. If you think you have changed your phone number since joining the Valley please help us to update your information. This can be done three ways one, by calling the Valley office or two, steveargast@daytonaasr.org or three, going to our web page. If you chose to update on the web page click on the membership header and drop down to update your contact info. Complete the information and click on submit this will upgrade your contact information. The program so far has been successful during the first couple of months with the contacts we have made. But we need more Brethren to step up and volunteer to receive a list of members to call for their birthdays. If you are interested in participating, please Melanie at melanie.asbell@ daytonaasr.org. DID YOU GET WHAT YOU WANTED FOR CHRISTMAS?? HOW ABOUT A SCOTTISH RITE ENDOWED LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP? It pays for itself in just a few years and payment plans are available!! 11 January SRN Page 11 Children s Dyslexia Center Valley of Dayton During this Thanksgiving and holiday season, it is particularly appropriate that we take time to thank the people who have been so generous with their efforts and donations to help raise money for the Children s Dyslexia Center. On behalf of the children, tutors, volunteers and Board of Governors, I would like to thank the businesses in and around our community who donated many items to our wine tasting event as well as those who attended. My sincere gratitude also goes to all the volunteers who helped park cars at the Greek Festival and Oktoberfest. Special thanks to Dayton Lodge #147, Knights of St. Andrews, Elite Catering, the Dayton Masonic Center Staff and the Trustees. As a result of all of the aforementioned efforts, we raised over $40,000 for the Children s Dyslexia Center. Additionally, Cassano s Pizza King held a Charity golf outing in September for our Center and raised $40,000, which was presented to the Board of Governors at the wine tasting event. Our heartfelt thanks to the team at Cassano s who made this possible. These fundraising events are extremely important, as we are responsible for raising $85,000 to keep our Center open. Through the generosity of the Scottish Rite Masons and our fundraising events we have met our goals since Finally, we hope that we can count on your continued support for our learning center in the future. Our Center is an extremely valuable resource for the children in our area as it is the only option available to provide the specialized teaching needed by children with dyslexia. Once again, words cannot express my sincere appreciation for your time and generosity. Sincerely and Fraternally, Walt Barner, CDC Board of Governors

12 J a n u a r y S R N P a g e 1 2 Digitized documents from the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library are now online! By Jeffrey Croteau, Director of Library & Archives, Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library, Lexington, MA The Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library has recently launched the Van Gorden-Williams Library & Archives Digital Collections website ( which was created in order to provide Scottish Rite members access to some of the riches of the Library & Archives collection. Letter from President James Madison to Senator David Daggett, 1817 January 1, Collection of Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library, Lexington, Massachusetts, USM 009. Gift of Caldwell Consistory, Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. [Available online at: digitalvgw.omeka.net/items/show/91] The site currently includes around 500 documents from the Library & Archives collection and continues to grow. Among the items that have been digitized so far are a large variety of Masonic certificates, a number of founding documents of the Scottish Rite, and a variety of other materials reflective of the depth and breadth of the Library & Archives collection. One document that may be of interest to those who enjoy seeing where American political history and Scottish Rite history overlap, is the document pictured here. In this letter, President James Madison ( ) requests Connecticut Senator David Daggett s presence at a special session of the Senate held on March 4, At this session, Vice President elect Daniel D. Tompkins ( ) was sworn into office, just prior to newly elected President James Monroe s official inauguration ceremony. Tompkins was governor of New York from 1807 until 1817 and then served as Vice President under Monroe from 1817 to Tompkins name may also be familiar to you because of his Scottish Rite connection. He served as the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction s first Sovereign Grand Commander from 1813 until The Madison letter is among items digitized from the Library & Archives G. Edward Elwell, Jr., Autograph Collection which consists of documents collected by G. Edward Elwell, Jr., 33 ( ) a member of Caldwell Consistory (Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania) and a professional printer. The items in the Elwell Collection, which was generously donated to the Museum & Library by the Caldwell Consistory, span nearly 500 years of history ( ), and each contains the signature of a well-known figure from American or European history. The Van Gorden-Williams Library & Archives Digital Collections website is built on the Omeka platform, an open source web-publishing platform for the online display of library, museum, archives, and scholarly collections and exhibitions. The Digital Collections website gives users access to high resolution images of each document. Robust cataloging for each document insures that users searching for materials will find them. We hope that you ll explore the Van Gorden-Williams Library & Archives Digital Collections website and take a look at the many wonderful documents that the Library & Archives preserves and makes accessible through the generosity of the Supreme Council, 33, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, NMJ, USA, and its members. Let us know what you think. We are always happy to receive feedback from users. The Van Gorden-Williams Library & Archives is located just off the main lobby of the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library in Lexington, Massachusetts and is open to the public 10 am to 4 pm, Wednesday-Saturday. 15 Valley of Dayton Special Degree Day January SRN Page 15 Due to the overwhelming interest in the November 12 th Special 32 Conferral in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of A.A.S.R., the Valley of Dayton held a special 32 degree preparation day for 19 candidates on October 29 th. Supreme Council guidelines for becoming a 32 degree mason require that a Candidate view at least four Core-Value Degrees prior to the 32 to qualify them to become S.P.R.S. These 19 Candidates who wished to participate in the Special 32 nd Degree Day met for breakfast at the Dayton Masonic Center and were then shown the 4, 12, 26, and 29 degrees on videos provided by Supreme Council. Ill. Brother Steve Hottle gave detailed educational programs before each of the degrees to provide deeper meaning and insight to the message of the degree. R.W.B. Cliff Koss, Thrice Potent Master of Gabriel Lodge of Perfection, addressed the Candidates prior to starting the 4 to let them know this was not how the Valley normally portrays Degrees but rather a solution to special circumstances brought about by the Supreme Council Edict. The Valley of Dayton has a long-standing tradition of outstanding Degree portrayals live in our beautiful auditorium with full stage, sound, lighting, and costumes Koss stated. But we wanted to accommodate these Brethren who wanted to participate in the 32 in November. Combined Class Valley of Dayton 292 and 293
