(360) Terry Grove, 32, KCCH General Secretary 2431 Rucker Ave (425) Orient of Washington - Valley of Everett Volume 26 January 2017 Issue 01 THE RITE BULLETIN From The Personal Representative Carl B. Smith, 33 From the Personal Representative: How many times have you heard the words that Scottish Rite is the University of Masonry? And that, the lessons of the university are exemplified throughout the performance of the several degrees. On Friday, January 20 th, Everett Valley will begin the instruction by presenting the Fourth Degree (4 ), Secret Master. The Fourth Degree is one that is mandatory so it is important that petitions be received by the 20 th of January. The purpose of this Degree is to not only to illustrate certain virtues but is also to lay the foundation for the entire system of the Scottish Rite Degrees. The conclusion of the Degrees will occur with the conduct of the 32, Master of the Royal Secret in late October of Each of us are aware of Brethren who are ready to receive this addition to their Masonic education. Brethren, now is the time to get those petitions in for our 2017 class. Contact these Brethren and share with them the joys we have received by being a Scottish Rite Mason. Petitions are available from our General Secretary or on the web site for our Valley. Send your petitions to our Secretary, Brother Terry Grove, 32 KCCH, so we can start the year off on a positive note. On December 9 th the officers for each of the Bodies were either elected or appointed for the year 2017, forty-two in all. On Friday, January 13 th these officers will be installed into their respective places. A buffet dinner will be served at 7:00 p.m. with the Installation to follow at 8:00 o clock. Refreshments will be served following the ceremonies. Family and friends are invited to join us on this special occasion. Terry can be reached at or e m a i l h i m a t t e r r y - grove50@yahoo.com COURAGE TODAY INSURES MASONRY TOMORROW By Dewey Wollstien, PGM, 32, KCCH Masonry, which does not claim strength through numbers, but through the fiber and moral power of the individual, has withstood the tyranny of kings and popes, and in all countries wherein Masonry prospers, there you will find the greatest individual prosperity and happiness, the greatest cultural progress and the highest standard of living for the greatest number of people. Let us not rest on our laurels. To make possible the advancement of Masonry from yesterday until today there was required the moral courage of many Masons. They were Masons who were determined that no personal cost was too great to pay for Liberty, Justice and Tolerance. To make possible Masonry of Today there were Masons who suffered reprisals, financial sacrifice, and even death. While we cannot peer too far into the future, we must remind ourselves that, step, by step, by degrees, we are making Masonry of Tomorrow. We have Divine Assurance that if we do the work of Masonry, if we discharge our sacred obligations, if we hold fast to all that is true, Masonry will be a stronger force tomorrow than today. Then let us contemplate more and more on the ultimate objective of Masonry- to make of our candidates Master Masons. Let those who are capable of teaching be generous with their talents. Let us never cease to teach. To the patient teacher there will always come the eager pupil. Let the Worshipful Master and the officers of the lodge bring teacher and student together and there will result a strength that will be reflected in future generations. The teacher and the pupil inspired and enlightened by the Source of All Wisdom are the Masons who today are creating Masonry's place in the World of Tomorrow. No. Masonry has no objection to the admission of a Catholic to the Masonic fraternity. Whether the Roman Catholic Church objects to a Catholic becoming a Freemason is their business, not ours. Masonry would not counsel anyone to do something opposed by his religion. The present position of the Church regarding Freemasonry is not altogether clear; some sources indicate that the Vatican remains opposed to any form of Freemasonry, others say that only those organizations which "plot against the Church" (which Masonry does not) are proscribed, and others see no problem. This is a matter for any individual Catholic who might be interested in joining the Masons and his spiritual advisor. There is material in some of the degrees of the appendant bodies of Freemasonry which might be interpreted as anti-catholic, particularly with reference to the history of the Knights Templar and the death of Jacques DeMolay. But those events occurred nearly 700 years ago! The Church of today is not the Church of the 14th century. The Church itself has recognized that leaders of those times made errors of various sorts; one need only look to the 20th century canonization of Joan of Arc, burned in the 15th century as a heretic, or the rehabilitation of Galileo, forced in the 17th century to recant his scientific studies, to recognize this. The degrees of Masonry make no mention of the Church in any other than remote historical context. Freemasonry is the enemy of tyranny and despotism, not of any particular religion or nationality. If the Church were to fall into the hands of the heartless and rapacious, as it did in earlier times (the days of the Borgias and the Medicis, not to mention Torquemada), it would be as much the duty of every Catholic to denounce such behavior as it would be for Freemasons--and modern-day Martin Luthers.
5 Director's Corner The staff at Washington Masonic Charities and I have been busy traveling across the state to help make sure that everyone in the Masonic family knows that we are a resource. The opportunity to meet and get to know Masons and their Ladies in every corner of our state has been truly enjoyable. One of my goals has been to find ways that Washington Masonic Charities can be both a partner with Lodges, but also help motivate, encourage, and leverage local charitable activities. I've been humbled to see the response. Nearly 50% of Washington Lodges are participating in this year's WA Masonic Charities - Grand Lodge Scholarship program. We've collaborated with more than a dozen lodges on charitable efforts, including assisting seniors and disadvantage youth in our communities. We currently have 26 Lodges signed up for the Masons Helping Neighbors program and more. Together, we have helped more than 450 older adults this Masonic year, and have contributed to the well-being of hundreds of disadvantaged children around the state. This outpouring of goodwill is amazing, and I continue to be thankful every day that I have the great pleasure and honor of helping this Fraternity become better at "doing good unto all." Let's keep up the good work! - Br. Ken Gibson, MNPL, Executive Director Make a Difference at the Holidays by Supporting Children's and Senior's Basic Needs As Masons, our commitment to distressed older adults and children runs deep - not only for those related to the Fraternity, but as our closing charge says, "every human being has a claim to your kind offices...do good unto all." I am asking you to help today by making a contribution this holiday season. I am also asking you also if you will help by sharing this request with the Brethren in your Lodge and District. Washington Masonic Charities is your Jurisdiction's charitable organization, and we are on the ground directly helping Masons, widows, and members of the general public every day. Our case managers directly serve more than 650 seniors each year (more than half are Masons and widows). Through the contributions of you and others, we have helped feed, clothe, and support hundreds of disadvantaged youth throughout the state. You can be assured that your contribution does vital work for those who need it most. 100% of each gift we receive from this appeal between now and December 31st will be used to support our Children's Basic Needs, and our Senior Emergency Needs programs. Your generous contribution will help provide food, clothing, shoes, and essential toiletries for young people, and will help assure that our seniors have food, clothing, heat and shelter. Please, give generously! Thank you in advance for taking a moment to reflect on how each of us can make a difference as a Mason and as one who is involved. -Ken Gibson, Executive Director How to give: 1. 6 RiteCare of Washington Susie Beresford, Director of Development & Communication #GivingTuesday gifts matched by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Thanks to the power of social media and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the donations given between November 29 th and December 31 st, were entered to receive a match. This means, the gifts given could be doubled in value! Because of the momentum #GivingTuesday created on social media, this appeal was bigger than ever. This is the first time Early Life Speech & Language, formerly RiteCare of Washington ever participated in #GivingTuesday and to date, we ve raised several thousand dollars. That s before the match. Our wonderful kid participated in this by allowing us to take pictures holding the #GivingTuesday signs and we re certain that the success we had was 100% due to their sweet faces! Stay tuned for next #GivingTuesday, we ll be notifying you then just as we did for this one and hope to continue to garner more support each year! Life Changes since becoming a Mason I was talking to a Brother who has had more than his share of challenges recently and he made a statement that was thought provoking and profound at the same time. He said, Masonry saved my life. I thought at the time that, perhaps, this was a bit of an overstatement, but the more I considered his statement, I came to the realization that, if we took a moment to reflect, that a statement of Masonry CHANGED my life could or should be true for each of us. I will talk more about this in the next issue of the Masonic Tribune, but I wanted to give you some time to personally contemplate if this is not a true testimonial for you. See you in the Tribune.
