From the Vicarage November This month there are Commemorations of World War 1 taking place. It is an opportunity for people everywhere to reflect on the events of , to remember all who lost their lives in the conflict and to learn from the experience and build a better and peaceful future for all. It is difficult to grasp the enormity of the suffering of so many people from so many nations. Reading statistics on the numbers killed and injured cannot be comprehended; the scale is too vast. How the nations plummeted into such a cruel abyss cannot be understood. The world slid out of control and the cost in human lives was unbearable. Amidst the apocalyptic scenes of carnage and destruction there were millions of individuals desperately trying to cope, make sense of it all and survive. Families and communities everywhere were devastated; hearts and lives broken and societies transformed beyond recognition in the years following. The price paid and the hardships endured cannot be overestimated. The world and human life was changed for ever. One hundred years after these events we are still affected because most families still have a direct link to that generation which suffered and can recall grand parents telling their stories of their involvement. It is so important that people everywhere do take the time to remember and possibly share in a commemorative event this month. We owe it to that generation to remember what they had to endure. Society was changed and we need to continue with the shaping and building of a society and a world of which that generation would be proud; a place where there is respect and acceptance for all, equality, justice and above all peace for all. Too often people feel they need to take sides, for and against an idea, decision or course of action. This is not how it has to be as there can be cooperation, compromise and the way of peace. Jesus is called The Prince of Peace and in the Sermon on the Mount it says: Blessed are the Peacemakers (Matthew 5). Let everyone endeavour to be a Peacemaker and bring peace in every situation and place. May we all be channels of God's peace. Geoff 3

On Tuesday, 7th October, we had a talk by the Revd. David Senior on Paintings and Prayer; A reflection on paintings that draw you into prayer. He brought along a painting of "The Prodigal Son" and explained various things about it before showing us some slides of different parts of the picture; pointing out things that were difficult to make out but, when light was added, became more alive. One of our members read the passage from the Bible and David finished with prayer. It was a most interesting afternoon. The meeting on the 4th November is "Your Special Treasure". Please bring along something that is special to you and tell us about it. REMINDER - On Wednesday, 19th November, there is a Deanery Fund Raiser entitled "A Stitch in Time" from 10 am to 4 pm. Lunch is provided and the cost is Please see the Notice Board for details or ring Barbara Myercough on (01759) All are welcome to any of our meetings. With Many Blessings Josie Penter Rembrandt - Return of the Prodigal Son 4

Samaritans Purse shoe box appeal. The last shoe boxes will be collected on Sunday 2nd Nov. Last year we got 50 so let's try to do it again this year! Please help to make a child happy this Christmas. For further information collect a leaflet from church or contact Jonathan Mardall All Saints Church Choir You may have noticed that on three Sundays so far this Autumn there has been a much larger than usual church choir at All Saints' Pocklington - we have been experimenting with choosing one Sunday each month when we encourage all our pool of potential singers to join in at the same time, and so far the results have been excellent, I think. We will usually be there at full strength at the service on the 4th Sunday of each month, with occasional variations to take in special services such as Easter Day. The next few "choir specials" will be November 23rd, then the Carol Service in the evening of December 21st, then January 25th and February 22nd My thanks to all singers who have taken part so far, with a particular mention for those who keep the torch alight on the Sundays in between! 7 A GERMAN PILGRIMAGE (Pam & Tony Burdon) Folk at All Saints may remember a visit from a group of German Christians in October We very much enjoyed acting as hosts to two members of the group, Gordon and Elisabeth Heinemann, and have kept in touch with them ever since. In early September we paid Gordon and Elisabeth a return visit, which was a wonderfully renewing experience! We spent two weekends with Gordon and Elisabeth, so were able to attend church with them on both Sundays. They worship at the village church in Ende, which is just outside the town of Herdecke situated on the River Ruhr just east of Essen and a few mile south of Dortmund. We thoroughly enjoyed the Lutheran services a baptism on our first Sunday, and a communion service on the second Sunday. There was a mixture of traditional and contemporary hymns, including one from a Jewish source Here is our translation: Friends, isn t the almond tree a sign that love is eternal when it blossoms and flourishes again in spring? Even in the midst of so much bloodshed, life goes on. Isn t this a sign of hope? War destroys thousands a whole world is passing away. But yet the flowers of life move gently yet victoriously in the wind. Friends, isn t the almond tree a sign that love is eternal when it blossoms and flourishes again in spring? Maybe we can use these words to express our longing for peace in our own generation? In between our time with Gordon and Elisabeth, we hired electric bicycles, and spent 4 days cycling down the Ruhr valley. We began our journey at the source of the Ruhr watching the water bubbling out of a rock high up in the mountains was a parable in itself! You may have images of the Ruhr valley as a place of smoking chimneys and heavy industry but the upper stretches of the Ruhr Valley are 7

incredibly peaceful and beautiful, dotted with picturesque villages and fascinating old towns like Arnsberg and Schwerte. Often we would come across wayside shrines and chapels places to stop and pray and light a candle. One night we stayed at a Roman Catholic Convent, where we were warmly welcomed by the sisters. So quite an ecumenical journey for us! Here is a prayer which we came across at the Convent:- Breathe in us, Holy Spirit, Burn in us, Holy Spirit, Work in us Holy Spirit Spirit of God, come! Come, Spirit of holiness, Come, Spirit of truth, Come, Spirit of love, Come Spirit, flow through us Come Spirit, make your home in us Come Spirit, enliven us, We long for you Come Spirit, make us one Come Spirit, fill us Come Spirit, renew us Pam & Tony with Gordon & Elizabeth &Ministers from Ende Church 8

FAIRTRADE FLOWER BED Many of you supported the campaign to achieve Fairtrade Town status for Pocklington, several years ago. To celebrate the 5th Anniversary, the FLAG Committee are using the flower bed overlooking The Pavement to celebrate and promote Fairtrade in this town. Please view from The Pavement as the slope is slippery. Parish Fairtrade Table will be available after Sunday Service on 2nd November. ALSO On Saturday 1st November during Saturday Coffee ( ) there will be Christian Aid and Tearfund Christmas Cards and Advent Calendars for sale and to order. Thank you for your continued support. 9

HOST is looking for kind, friendly, hospitable people of all ages whose imaginations are caught by the idea of welcoming an international student at university here, far from his or her own family, to their home, for a day, a weekend or at Christmas. You don t need to live near a university, as students will travel for the privilege of meeting you, learning about real life in this country, and sharing their own culture. HOST is a voluntary activity which makes ambassadors for international goodwill of us all. Please see or call Eric Songhurst Thank you 10

Saint Andrew s Day (November 30th) Traditions and celebrations in Scotland The celebration of St Andrew as a national festival is thought to originate from the reign of Malcolm III ( ). It was thought that ritual slaughter of animals associated with Samhain was moved to this date, so as to assure enough animals were kept alive for winter. But it is only in more recent times that the 30 November has been given national holiday status. Bank Holiday In 2006, the Scottish Parliament passed the St. Andrew's Day Bank Holiday (Scotland) Act 2007, which designated the Day as an official bank holiday. If 30 November falls on a weekend, the next Monday is a bank holiday instead. Although it is a bank holiday, banks are not required to close and employers are not required to give their employees the day off as a holiday. The University of St Andrews traditionally gives the day for all the students as a free holiday, but this is not a binding rule. The Saltire St Andrew's Day is an official flag day in Scotland. The Scottish Government's flag-flying regulations state that the Flag of Scotland (the Saltire or Saint Andrew's Cross) shall fly on all its buildings with a flagpole. Prior to 2002, the Scottish Government followed the UK Government's flag days and would only fly the Union Flag on St Andrew's Day. The regulations were updated to state that the Union Flag would be removed and replaced by the Saltire on buildings with only one flagpole. The flying of the Union Flag from Edinburgh Castle on all days, including St Andrew's Day causes anger among some Scottish National Party members who have argued that the Saltire should fly on 30 November instead. However, the Union Flag is flown by the British Army at the Castle as it still is an official British Army flag flying station. 13

A prayer for the life of our parishes and churches O God, make the door of this church wide enough to receive all who need human love and fellowship; narrow enough to shut out envy, pride and strife. Make its threshold smooth enough to be no stumbling block for children, nor to straying feet, but rugged and strong to turn back the tempter's power. God, make the doorway of this house the entrance to your eternal kingdom. Amen.
