3 Iowa State Council Knights of Columbus My very dear brothers: December 2017 We have had a good start of this fraternal year. During the first six months of the year, we have started three new councils in the state: 2 in Waterloo and 1 Hispanic Council in Ottumwa. Thanks to District Deputies Tom Novotney, Dale Wille, and Steve Slobodnik for stepping up and reminding their parishes that WE ARE CALLED to Build the Domestic Church while Strengthening our Parish. State Secretary Paul Lee was instrumental in helping District Deputies Tom and Dale in Waterloo while GK Pablo Martinez from Ottumwa #888 led the way for the new Hispanic Council in town. These individuals saw an opportunity to plant the seed of the Order in their parishes. I invite all of you to find these opportunities and not only in new councils but on new individuals and communities: Is there a Spanish Mass in your parish? In another language? Are there new people coming to Mass? Do you know people in your parish that have strayed from the parish? Are any boys turning 18 in your parish? In your family? Keep your eyes open, hold tight to your convictions, give it all you've got, be resolute 1 st Cor 16:13. This should be our driver the rest of the fraternal year. Keep your eyes open for opportunities of membership growth and charitable works. Always be convinced that we are fulfilling our call to bring the Good News to all. Give it your best and always be positive! With God on our side, everything is possible. We will reach our goals and we will prevail for His Greater Glory. Let s close strong and make Father McGivney s dream a reality in our wonderful state. Vivat Jesus! Antonio Bañuelos, State Deputy 3

10 Since November 2015, Supreme has been mentioning this initiative of the Knights of Columbus. The goal is to have every council renew their focus on supporting families as the domestic church, and strengthen our local Catholic parishes. Why do we refer to families as the domestic church? We mean that each family is an assembly of believers that together participate in the work of God. By using the Scripture term "domestic church," we emphasize that family is not simply a social concept, but rather a state of life established by God. The concept of Domestic Church is not a new one but it is something rediscovered following Vatican II. Part of our work is bringing this vision for family life to an even wider audience and to this generation of parents and families. This initiative will help your local councils grow in their charitable outreach, renew the bonds of fraternity among current members, and serve as a natural recruiting opportunity for new brother knights. Here are the current programs designated as the preferred programs of the Building the Domestic Church initiative: Building the Domestic Church Series (kiosk) Family Week Celebrations Family Rosary Spiritual Formation Groups (Into the Breach) Family Fully Alive Keep Christ in Christmas Journey to the Inn Holy Family Icon Prayer Program Consecration of Families to the Holy Family Simple Supper and Stations Food for Families Father s Day Affirmation of Wedding Vows Our Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson, remarked Today, the Knights of Columbus is providentially positioned to play a key role in the new alliance between the Church and the family But for us to do so requires that we adopt new methods. The Iowa State Council is excited about this initiative and hopes that your council too will find this initiative to be fruitful in our shared mission to protect Catholic families and render aid to the sick, disabled and needy of our communities. More information is available on our website, iowakofc.org, as well as the Supreme website, kofc.org/domesticchurch. 10

15 Spiritual Formation Groups Into the Breach explores 3 questions: What does it mean to be a Christian man? How does a Catholic man love? Why is fatherhood so crucial for every man? Other spiritual formation studies can be done Family Fully Alive To cultivate life as a domestic church, a family must deliberately welcome God into its home. This program has been created to help each family do this. Through prayer and reflection each family can grow in holiness together. Monthly themes, meditations, Scripture readings, faith sharing, social activities and volunteer service projects for whole family Designed especially for young families New ways to bring light of Gospel into homes Booklets (#10162) are available through Supreme Keep Christ in Christmas The birth of our Lord Jesus Christ brought a great illumination of hope into the world. Help spread the light of Christ each Advent by: Lighting and blessing a Nativity scene and/or Christmas tree Caroling, collecting clothing and food for the needy, or serving snacks and refreshments for a parish family social Combine this event with the Journey to the Inn program Sponsor a Christmas Poster Contest for the youth in your parish Submit a Keep Christ in Christmas advertisement to your church bulletin or local newspaper, and include it in your council newsletter The joy of Christmas is to be shared by all, and the true joy comes from the birth of Jesus! Celebrate the season with your family and council members in the manner it was intended, by keeping Christ in Christmas! 15

16 Journey to the Inn Franciscan missionaries in the 16th century found that simple reenactments of the story of Christ s birth could touch the hearts of those they encountered. The Spanish missionaries referred to these ceremonies as Las Posadas meaning the inns or the shelters as they gave emphasis to Mary and Joseph s search for shelter before Our Savior s birth. Contemplating St. Joseph, fathers and husbands learn prudence and true devotion Contemplating Our Lady, wives and mothers progress in their pilgrimage of faith Publication #9898 is available from Supreme Marian Prayer Program 18 th Marian Prayer Program will begin in August 2017 with an image of the icon to be announced. Image of icon to be brought into parishes Booklets included with the icon for prayer programs Prayer cards will be available Icon will travel in Iowa until July 2019 Councils should coordinate with their District Deputy Consecration of Families to the Holy Family Families today face many struggles, both through cultural pressure and through the personal struggles that accompany family life. Despite these struggles and partly because of conquering them families have great capacity for love and joy, a joy that is strengthened through the peace and truth found in Christ. To help families live out this joy of Christ, Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William Lori has composed a prayer through which families may come together to consecrate themselves under the protection of the Holy Family. Strengthen families spiritually by inviting Jesus, Mary and Joseph into your homes Invite families of your parish to offer this prayer of Consecration to the Holy Family at all Masses on the first Sunday after Christmas (December 31) Hand out prayer cards (#10371) at your parish available from Supreme 16

17 Simple Soup and Stations Councils should partner with their parishes to sponsor a "Simple Supper & Stations" on Fridays during Lent. If your parish already prays the Stations of the Cross, ask your pastor's permission to serve a simple supper of meatless soup and bread to parishioners and attendees before or after the stations. This provides a communal opportunity for participation in the traditional Lenten observances of fasting and abstaining from meat. If your parish doesn't already pray the Stations together, ask your pastor if he would consider adding both the suppers and Stations to the parish calendar. Prayers, meditations and hymns can be found in The Way of the Cross: Traditional and Modern Meditations - #363 from Supreme Food for Families The Knights of Columbus is committed to ending hunger in local communities by asking local councils to participate in the Order-wide Food for Families Program. Since 2012, the Knights of Columbus has donated over $8.5 million and 14.7 million pounds of food to local food pantries, community food banks and soup kitchens. People tend to remember pantries at Thanksgiving and Christmas, but summer months can be lean at pantries Supreme offers financial rebates for every $500 or 1000 pounds of food donated by Councils or Assemblies - see Form #10057 Father s Day Affirmation of Wedding Vows Father s Day is an important time to celebrate the role of fatherhood within the Christian family and is an ideal day for fathers to celebrate and honor their marriage vows. Annually sponsoring this event on the third Sunday of June will serve to make your council visible to the parish community and show your member s support for all fathers and husbands. During these events, Knights and their wives along with all the married couples of the parish have an opportunity to affirm their commitment to their wedding vows. After the event, councils should host a reception where they can congratulate each couple and thank them for their witness. Involve chaplain because of implications with non-recognized marriages A Covenant Renewed certificate #2745 is available from Supreme 17

23 Membership Six Great Reasons to Join the Knights of Columbus You Can Change Lives The Supreme Knight and the Board of Directors has forged a partnership with the Global Wheelchair Mission, which provides low-cost, high-quality wheelchairs to poor people around the world. The Supreme Knight has personally seen in Haiti how a wheel chair can change a life. During his experience in Haiti, he joined others in lifting people into wheelchairs who were injured in the earthquake. In addition, the Order is making available prosthetic limbs to all children who lost a limb in the Haiti earthquake, at no charge. You Can Save Lives The Knights of Columbus is dedicated to providing ultrasound machines to pro-life pregnancy centers across the United States and in Iowa. Thus far, over 600 machines have been delivered to centers across the country. One machine saved a set of twins when the mother canceled a scheduled abortion after seeing the babies on an ultrasound. She was the first woman to have an ultra- sound on that machine. You Can Help Build Up the Church As stated by Pope John Paul II, The Knights of Columbus is the strong right arm of the Church and the helping hand of every pastor. The Order is an ardent supporter of vocations to the priesthood and religious life, and many of the newest vocations today come directly from Knights of Columbus families and the members of college councils. You Can Discern Your Own Vocation Whether God is calling you to priesthood or the lay life, membership in the Knights of Columbus is a sure way to discern just what God has in mind for you. In the fraternal company of like-minded Catholic men; in the process of planning and carrying out charitable and religious programs with your council, and in prayerful reflection at spiritual events, you are more likely to hear God s call, and to have the courage and conviction to respond with generosity. You Can Develop Leadership Skills As a Knight, men are called to be not only tomorrow s leaders, but the leaders of today. By joining a Catholic organization of 1.9 million men and their families, a man has a built-in structure and tradition through which to express his individual talents and skills and build them as he moves along the leadership positions in his council and beyond. We are all called to leadership in our faith, family and fraternal circles. You Can Protect Your Family As a Knight you have exclusive access to top rated insurance protection for your family. We provide financial security to members and their families without compromise to the highest ethical and moral standards aligned with our Catholic faith. How strong and secure? There is no more highly rated insurer in North America than the Knights of Columbus! 23

24 Membership TO MAKE A GOOD KNIGHT MAKE A FRIEND FIRST In a perfect world, what would we like for a new member in the Knights of Columbus to experience the night of his First Degree and in the future? 1. The member WHO is sponsoring him would call to tell him that he will pick him up and personally take him to the Council meeting. He would show up on time and be sure to get to the council meeting ahead of time to complete any paper work. Remind the candidate to bring his check book for the dues payment. On the drive to the Council meeting find out what interests the candidate has in life in general. 2. At the Council meeting before the Degree, introduce the candidate to several of the members and make the candidate feel welcome. 3. After the degree, serve the candidates some refreshments in a friendly nonthreatening way. Find out what interests he has and fit it into the planned activities for the council. Such as working with children (Free throw contest, Special Olympics, ETC., or cooking or wood working whatever as long as his talent and an up coming event are tied together. 4. If your council has teams or a telephone tree introduce him to the team or tree Captain and give him the team captain s phone number and address. The more communication the better for the attitude of belonging and being in the know about the council programs and plans. This produces ownership and unity of purpose. 5. On the drive home, ask him what was most meaningful in the experience for him personally and support his views and feelings. Tell him that you are sure that he will be a good knight and a great model for his family. 6. Ask him if you can pick him up for next month s meeting or if he would like to drive. Be sure to call him a week before the meeting to remind him of the meeting, and continue to make a friend for life. 7. As days and weeks go on, the new member should feel that he is an integral part of a team that is accomplishing works for the Parish, Community, Family and youth. THEN HAS A MAN BECOME AN ACTIVE KNIGHT AND A VALUABLE PILLAR IN THE COMMUNITY BY SERVING OTHERS. 24

25 Membership Objection Handlers Too busy, focusing on career, family. I understand it is a definitive time in your life, as you are establishing your family and professional life. As it turns out, joining the Knights of Columbus makes you a part of an international network of Catholic men and their families just like you. You will have exclusive access to member benefits designed to protect you and your family at this critical time in your life, e.g. our affordable term insurance product just for men age Our members are men who share your values and make up a stellar support network for the future. Too busy, focused on other charity or ministry. Your contribution to [charity or ministry] is one of the reasons we decided to approach you. We notice your gifts and talents and would value having you onboard with our charitable and faith based programs as well. Even if you are not interested in joining the Knights of Columbus right now, we notice how your work is in line with our mission. We hope you will consider partnering with our council(s) on [K of C activity]. If there is anything we can do to assist you in your mission, feel free to reach out any time. Not interested, general. I can understand you not being interested in something you do not know about. Not everybody knows of the great work done by our local councils in their parishes and communities. Not everybody knows that, just last year, the Knights of Columbus donated $ million and 71.5 million hours to charity. Not everybody knows about the great member benefits we have and all the people you can meet by joining us. We know you might have questions in the future and invite you to reach out any time to learn more. Thank you for your time. Not interested, struggling with religion. Who doesn t? The fact that you have questions is a good sign, since it means you believe. If you did not believe, you would not bother struggling in the first place. Many of the men who join our ranks, including me, are just like you. They are far from perfect, but they want to be better. Your pastor or [credible priest of choice] is the best person to talk to about this, and I would not presume to be able to give you all the answers. There are also many resources available online, e.g. Bustedhalo.com, for one. Not interested, ideological. Of course, the Knights of Columbus is not for everyone. Not everyone agrees with our strong support for the Magisterium and the hierarchy. But I assure you the Knights of Columbus is primarily a charitable and faith-based, not political, organization. Leveraging Knights of Columbus membership for electoral gain is strictly prohibited. We welcome members of all political parties and ideologies, as long as they are practical Catholics in union with the Holy See. Credit to Paul V. Phillipino Membership Development Coordinator 25

26 Membership Shining Armor Award Awarded for service to the Order with distinction during the first year of membership, the Shining Armor Award is given to those men that exemplify what a true Knight of Columbus is. The concept of the Shining Armor Award program is to get new members active in the many facets of the Knights of Columbus as early as possible and assist in maintaining that activity and also honor them as a valued member of your council. To qualify for the Shining Armor Award new Knights must during their first year of membership: Be involved in at least 3 council service programs. Attend at least 3 council business meetings. Receive their Second and Third degrees. Meet with their council s insurance field agent. Recruit at least one new member. These are the qualifications for the basic program; consider implementing it in your council. Keep in mind, the main focus of the program is to get new members actively involved within their council from the very beginning. Councils can order materials for this program through knightsgear.com: Qualification Cards (#4292), help new members keep track of their progress toward attaining the Shining Armor Award as their grand knight verifies each completed requirement. Certificates of Recognition (#4293) and Shining Armor Lapel Pins (#1700) will be purchased by the State Council and sent to the Shining Armor recipient. Submit a copy of your completed qualification card to membership@iowakofc.org. 26

27 Membership Ceremonials Ceremonials in the Knights of Columbus begin a man s journey in the Knights and creates alignment to the mission of the Order and the vision of our founder, Fr. Michael J. McGivney. Ceremonials include degrees, council meetings and installation of officers. Councils are to schedule an admissions degree at least 6 times per year. Districts are to schedule an admissions degree once per month. No man who has signed his form 100 should wait more than a couple weeks to receive his degree. Every new member is to be assigned a sponsor (who may not be the proposer) and/or a mentor to guide him into the life of the council. The Exemplification of all Admission, Formation, and Knighthood degrees must be reported on Form 450 by the District Deputy, Grand Knight or Financial Secretary. The host Council should submit the Form 450 after each Exemplification of the Admission Degree, even if as the host Council they do not have a candidate. The Form 450 is available to be submitted electronically from the Knights of Columbus website at: All Councils are reminded that they have the ability to conduct their own First Degree at their own Council, reading the parts (if necessary). The Admission Degree exemplification video presentation can be downloaded from the Officers Online portion of or you can order a DVD copy from KnightGear. 28 Membership Council Mentorship Program Experience has shown that new members often lose interest How often do we hear we haven t seen so and so in forever? Remember I m the Guy. How often does a retention problem trace back to an uninvolved member who didn t get anything out of his membership? Every Council can use a lift some of the time Do you have poor turnout at Council Meetings or Council Activities? Do you know all your members? Do men take the First Degree and are seldom to be found for the next degree? Does your Council lack new ideas? Does your Council lack creativity with its programs? Is the Admissions Committee Working? Does your council plug the new man into the life of the council in ways that match his interest? New Member Advocate Program What job, team sport or any activity invites people to jump in without orientation or coaching? The same is true for the Knights. Who is designated to show the ropes to the new guy? Proposer? Sponsor? How about a council mentor? Steps to Establish Mentorship Program Commit to a Mentor Program District and Council Leadership can opt into participate Contact the membership team at membership@kofc.org; Put Mentor program in the subject and give good contact information. Watch your membership get activated! Together we will build better Council in order to do more for more people in need 28

29 Membership Think Retention NOT Suspension Follow PROPER BILLING PROCEDURES (1845a) as published by Supreme; we request councils use the fraternal year dates for retention deadlines. Ensure council has retention chairman (may not be financial secretary) on record with State and Supreme. This chairman is to have assistance of a committee (trustees are recommended). Make PERSONAL CONTACT with the Member, THIS IS REQUIRED and is to be documented on the Retention Worksheet. This is in person or by phone call. Send 1845 Notice of intent to suspend when required, after July 1, to member, Supreme, and retention@iowakofc.org. Make 2nd Personal Contact after member receives 1845 Notice of intent to retain. This contact is also to be documented on the retention worksheet Grand Knight, Trustees and retention committee review these contacts and determine who is non -retainable. This is to be done yearly. Maximum Number Allowed: 5% of roster, or 15 per year, whichever is less. If you have more contact State Council for assistance Send completed form 100 reflecting suspension to Member, Supreme, and retention@iowakofc.org. Include the retention worksheet documenting personal contact and council retention due diligence. Plan to replace any suspensions with new Knights. Manage your membership. A Non-Retainable member are those men who are confirmed as non-practical Catholics by the Chaplain, those who cannot be located after multiple attempts or who have indicated to a brother Knight personally they no longer wish to remain a member. No suspensions or withdrawals of a Non-Retainable Members Between January 1 st and June 30 th Any notice of intent to retain is requested to be filed between July 1 st & October 15 th Suspensions or withdrawals only from July 1 st to December 31 st The State Council doesn t fight suspensions but does demand due diligence in dealing with individual members. This ensures all rights are respected and the brother s needs are met. In fact when a council follows these procedures the State Council will assist in completing the process correctly. We do not want to think about getting Rid of non-dues paying members; rather how can we get them back active with our Band of Brothers. 29

30 I m the Guy (Author Unknown) I m the guy who asked to join your organization. I m the guy who paid his dues to join. I m the guy who stood up in front of you and promised to be faithful and loyal. I m the guy who came to your meetings and no one paid attention to. I tried several times to be friends, but they all had their own buddies to talk to and sit next to. I sat down several times, but no one paid any attention to me. I hoped very much that someone would have asked me to take part in a fund raising project or something, but no one saw my efforts when I volunteered. I missed a few meetings after joining because I was sick and couldn t be there. No one asked me at the next meeting where I had been. I guess it didn t matter very much to others whether I was there or not. The next meeting, I decided to stay home and watch TV. The following meeting, I attended, but no one asked me where I was for the last meeting. You might say I m a good guy or a good family man who holds a responsible job and loves his community and country. You know who else I am? THE GUY WHO NEVER CAME BACK. It amuses me how the heads of organizations and the members discuss WHY the organization is loosing members. It amuses me to think that they spend so much time looking for NEW members when I was there all the time. All they need to do was make me feel needed, wanted, and WELCOME! 30

31 KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS MEMBER RETENTION BILLING PROCEDURES A vitally important part of the financial welfare of the council is the collection of dues and per capita assessments from members. The Grand Knight and the Trustees should, therefore, always be certain that the following retention process is to be followed. Please note that Financial Secretaries should use the Member Management and Member Billing applications, located in the secure Officers Online area of to perform the tasks listed in this section online. Instructions, recorded webinars, and help are available within the online application. 1. The Financial Secretary mails the membership bill First Notice 15 days before the billing period to each member. 2. If payment is not received in 30 days, the Financial Secretary will mail the membership bill Second Notice. 3. If payment is not received within 30 days from the date the Second Notice was sent, the Financial Secretary will provide the names, addresses, telephone numbers, and amounts due for each member in arrears to the retention committee for personal follow up. The committee should include but is not limited to the Retention Committee Chairman (as reported on the Service Program Personal Report - typically the Deputy Grand Knight), the Trustees; and the proposer, if available. (NOTE: The Financial Secretary is NOT a member of the Retention Committee.) The Retention Chairman (typically the Deputy Grand Knight) shall assign a member of the retention committee to discuss the reasons for nonpayment: discuss any personal situations prohibiting payment: or to offer a cooperative remedy to the delinquency situation. The Retention Chairman will notify the Grand Knight of the results of the contact. If directed, the Financial Secretary forwards a Knight Alert letter to the delinquent member, signed by the Grand Knight after the Retention Committee has done their work. NOTE: The Retention Committee should make use of various methods, including internet search engines, in its attempt to locate the member if unreachable. The committee members provide a written report of their findings to the Retention Chairman. The Retention Committee Chairman will then compile a report on all members in arrears to be presented to the Grand Knight who will present the findings at the next officers meeting to determine if members are to be suspended or need assistance. Personal financial difficulty is not a sufficient reason for suspension. If the member is experiencing financial difficulty, the Retention Committee can recommend to the Grand Knight that he advise the Financial Secretary to accommodate the member with a payment plan or other financial arrangement that is acceptable to the council. 4. If after 15 days of sending the Knight Alert the member still has not paid his dues or no satisfactory arrangement has been made, the Notice of Intent to Retain is prepared and signed by the Financial Secretary and countersigned by the Grand Knight. a. The Original Copy is sent to the delinquent member. b. The Supreme Office Copy is forwarded to the Department of Membership Records. The Supreme Knight then mails a personal letter to the delinquent member to convey the Supreme Knight s interest in having the member retain his good standing status. c. The State Retention Chairman, on behalf of the State Deputy will have the responsibility of monitoring the conservation listing, posted each Saturday morning on the Supreme web site in the Officers Online area. The same has the responsibility to ensure that the District Deputy and State Retention Team have access to the conservation list. He should also communicate with the member, offering assistance and advising him that the District Deputy in his area is available to help with any particular problems. d. The District Deputy has the responsibility of monitoring the conservation listing, posted each Saturday morning on the Supreme web site in the Officers Online area, to access the list of members needing to be contacted. He personally contacts the delinquent member to discuss the nonpayment situation. In the course of the visit, suggestions as to possible solutions should be recommended, and the District Deputy will volunteer to assist the member, if the need exists. The District Deputy determines whether personal contact has been made by the council. The response and reaction received from the delinquent member is recorded and then forwarded as soon as possible to the State Deputy for review. e. The Council Copy is retained for council files. 5. If the delinquent member does not meet his obligation or arrange a satisfactory payment schedule within 60 days following processing of the Notice of Intent to Retain, then the council may file a Membership Document (#100), indicating suspension. Both the Grand Knight and Financial Secretary SHALL sign the form prior to filing the Form 100 with the Supreme Council. The Supreme Council office will not process the suspension unless a Notice of Intent to Retain has been on file for the required 60 days. 6. The Notice of Intent to Retain becomes null and void 90 days following the date it is recorded at the Supreme Council office. After the 90-day period has elapsed, the form will be removed from the file under the assumption the council has been successful in retaining the member. 7. If, subsequently, the member on whom the council previously filed a Notice of Intent to Retain again becomes delinquent, the entire billing/ retention process must be re-implemented as described. Every Financial Secretary has received clear and concise instructions on this procedure. It is the duty of the District Deputy to make certain that they are being carried out by the Financial Secretary and Retention Committee of each council in his district. It is the State Deputy s responsibility to insure that the State Membership Director, the State Retention Chairmen and the District Deputy follow the retention procedures. 31

33 Membership Hispanic Outreach Program What is it? Hispanic outreach simply means to reach out to Hispanic Catholic men by offering them membership in the Knights of Columbus through a Spanish speaking council or round table. It is geared mainly at men who either do not speak English or feel more comfortable in an environment in which Spanish is the predominant language. It also provides bilingual members an opportunity to utilize their Spanish language skills and their leadership skills in guiding and directing members of a Spanish speaking council or round table. How can Hispanic Outreach benefit your council and parish? Latino Catholic s represent 71% of the country s Catholic growth and today approximately 30.4 million people in the US identify as Hispanic/Latino Catholics. It is predicted that in 20 to 30 years, the largest ethnic group comprising the Catholic Church in America, will be the Hispanic population; meanwhile today, it is the largest minority in the entire country. Also, in many parts of the Southeast, our protestant brothers and sisters are aggressively targeting our immigrant Hispanic brothers. Mind you, over 70% of Hispanic immigrants are already Catholic; we are just attempting to retain them. How is this to be done? You can identify potential parishes where Spanish masses are offered and after getting the pastor's approval decide whether a council or round table would be suitable. Generally, if there is no council in the parish and its size is greater than 150 families, a council is appropriate. If there is already a council in the parish and if the pastor does not want two councils or the parish size is under 150 families, then a round table is appropriate. Is there information and brochures in Spanish available? Yes, virtually all recruitment brochures, posters, videos and all forms for running the council are available in Spanish. The Hispanic Development Field Coordinator can assist in facilitating with membership drives, information sessions, and Admission degrees in Spanish. Must I be able to speak Spanish to work with this effort? No. It certainly helps to know Spanish, but your leadership and organizational skills and working with you District Deputy are more critical and important at this stage to succeed in this effort. How do I get started? First, talk to the pastor of the parish you have identified. If he approves, contact your chain of command, your District Deputy and your State Deputy, Antonio Banuelos. 33

40 HOW TO COMPLETE THE COLUMBIAN AWARD The key to receiving the Columbian Award and eventually Star Council status is to conduct and report successful completion for each of the following Surge with Service Programs: Church Community Council Culture of Life Family Youth One way successful completion can be attained is by conducting four programs or activities in each of the six Surge with Service Program categories. A second way is by conducting a Supreme Council-designated Featured Program that satisfies that category s requirements. It is important to realize that a council should submit a SP-7 award even if they don't think they will make Star Council. It showcases their efforts towards effective programs that make the lives of their parishes and communities better. Councils need to submit the Columbian Award Application Form SP-7 which must be received in the Supreme Council office no later than June 30, You can this form to fraternalmission@kofc.org. Note that a program or activity should be listed and briefly described only once on the SP-7. If you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns, please feel free to contact the appropriate program/activity leader and/or Mike DeMoully, State Program Director, via phone at and/ via (programs@iowakofc.org). I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for what you, your councils and your assemblies do to support faithful Catholic citizenship in our local communities. We have completed one exemplification thus far this fraternal year. An exemplification was held on November 4th at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. 23 new Sir Knights joined our ranks. 13 were resident veterans, many in wheelchairs. A special thanks to Sir Knight Eldon Schneider for his dedication to turn this dream into reality. Confirmed dates for 2018 Exemplifications are as follows: Sunday, March 25th, Sioux City Friday, April 6, Davenport (State Convention) To support and grow involvement in out patriotic endeavors assemblies from each part of the state are encouraged to host a Fourth Degree exemplification in Hosting is not an expensive proposition and our Fourth-Degree staff will work with you to keep if affordable. Contact your master at address above, or by at districtmaster@iowakofc.org. A key change is now in effect for new candidates: the dress code for a candidate for the fourth degree no longer requires a tuxedo. Rather: A candidate will wear a black or dark (blue or grey) business suit, with black shoes, white dress shirt and dark tie. A tuxedo will still be acceptable but not mandatory. A candidate serving in the armed forces of his country, fulltime police and firefighters may wear a Class A or dress uniform. Assemblies get involved in supporting veterans, patriotic celebrations but mostly encouraging our member Sir Knights to keep our high ideals foremost in their lives. One of those ideals is to live for one s country, please take a moment to say, thank you to any of the men and women you meet who have served our country, that we may be able to continue to live free. 50 Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree FATHER PADILLA PROVINCE Michael P. Gaspers District Master 500 East Street; PO Box 38 Danbury, IA Phone: Cell: New Developments for the Fourth Degree Elimination of the tuxedo for new candidates New candidates are no longer required to wear a black tuxedo to their exemplification ceremony. While tuxedos are still permitted the requirement is now a dark suit (black, dark blue, dark gray). This change was made to simplify requirements of joining as it's expected most would already own a suit that met this requirement. Sir Knights are encouraged to share this positive change with all potential candidates; especially those that have said the tuxedo requirement was a problem; either for financial reasons or because they didn't like the idea of owning/wearing a tuxedo. New Uniform replaces regalia for honor guards The tuxedo or tuxedo/ regalia combination that has been the standard attire for honor guards is being replaced by a new uniform as many of you know. Agree or not the deadline for this replacement is now June 30, After that date, only members wearing the new uniform will participate in honor guards or Color Corp events. Supreme recognizes that many existing Sir Knights own regalia and offered 25% discount to help reduce the financial burden on those that want to continue to participate in honor guards with the new uniform. This discount reduced the cost from $510 to $ (these prices do not include shipping) The discount was communicated through many different methods to assemblies and members across our state. Thousands of Sir Knights took advantage of this discount offer. As of December 1, the discount expired. The cost for a member to participate in an honor guard with the new uniform is approximately the same as it was with the tuxedo/ regalia combination. New Uniform - $525 (approx.) + $175 for sword/ service baldric/ gloves = $700 (approx.) Tuxedo/ Regalia - $200 for tuxedo (approx.) + $500 (approx.) for regalia (chapeau, cape, sword, service baldric, gloves) = $700 (approx.) Social Baldric Social baldrics will continue to be given to new Sir Knights when they join. They CAN wear them under a tuxedo or suit jacket at social functions, but social baldrics are no longer a required element at Fourth Degree social functions. The social baldric should NEVER be worn with the new uniform. Color Corps Drill Manual Changes The laws & Rules Governing the Fourth Degree and the Color Corps Drill Manual are being updated and will be distributed when complete. Fourth Degree Pin The flag pin will not be an element of the official uniform. The only pin to be worn as part of the uniform will be pg113 which is the official 4th Degree Pin. The flag pin is acceptable for all other fourth degree social functions 50

51 Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree FATHER PADILLA PROVINCE Michael P. Gaspers District Master 500 East Street; PO Box 38 Danbury, IA Phone: Cell: What remains the same: Religiously Devoted, Patriotically Proud For most men who follow Jesus, there comes a time when duty extends beyond our own lives, beyond how we lead our families, and into how we serve our fellow man. That's what the Knights of Columbus is all about. The Patriotic Degree allows K of C members to take this one step further. "Sir Knight" is more than a title it s an honor. Standing Firm in Support of the Order Knights of the Patriotic Degree are dedicated to the personal development and continued honor of brother Knights. We are always there to offer leadership, guidance, and encouragement. Proudly Serving the Country Knights of the Patriotic Degree glorify God by serving our communities and nations as though Christ were the one being served. Unwavering Support of the Faith Knights of the Patriotic Degree hold unwaveringly to what is right and honorable, working to keep God in the civic arena, serving the life of the Church, and defending laws that recognize the sanctity of life and true religious liberty. Honoring the Legacy of Knighthood The Color Corps is an elective division of the Patriotic Degree that presents a visible reminder of our service to the community. Programs & Recognition Assemblies are encouraged to develop programs to be visible within their councils and communities. These need not compete with but work alongside existing council activities where possible. Civic Award recognizes assemblies which implement at least four (4) varied patriotic programs throughout the fraternal year. To Be a Patriot recognizes the best patriotic themed programs which combine our Catholic heritage with our love of country. Membership Growth To Succeed the Fourth Degree must grow First to Fourth: encourage new members to continue their formation as Knights by continuing through all degrees of the order Frequent exemplifications: schedule exemplifications in your area following 2 nd and 3 rd degrees. Attainment of the fourth degree should be an appeal to a man s desire to become his best self in service to God, to country and to others. 51
