Iowa State Council Knights of Columbus My very dear brother Knights: I am honored and excited to start this new fraternal year looking forward to serve the Iowa Knights of Columbus, the Catholic Church, and every member of the human family in our beautiful state. We belong to the largest and greatest Catholic Fraternal Organization as we are privileged children of God. This privilege means that WE ARE CALLED to serve those around us and to continue Building the Domestic Church while Strengthening Our Parish. As the Strong Right Arm of the Church, WE ARE CALLED to bring Christ s message to those in the peripheries. WE ARE CALLED by Pope Francis to boldly take the initiative, go out to others, seek those who have fallen away, stand at the crossroads and welcome the outcast. (Evangelii Gaudium, 24) The Knights of Columbus is the perfect response to this call as we invite Catholic men and their families to join us in Building God s Kingdom One Domestic Church at a time. So it is time, as WE ARE CALLED, to start looking closely at our Councils and our programs and see how we are Building the Kingdom, how we are advancing in Building of the Domestic Church, and how we are identifying the outcasts in the peripheries. In this day and age in which God s voice is no longer heard, the quiet joy of his love is no longer felt, and the desire to do good fades (EG, 2) we need to be the alternative and option to the Catholic father that needs a band of brothers to support him and help him lead; to the young Catholic that sees his/her morals and values being ridiculed and smothered by today s culture; by those who thirst for God s love, for tenderness, for people who see beyond themselves. We are the option brothers and we have to make sure people know that. We need to respond to that CALL and bring God s love to all. Let me know how we can help you be known as that option. Tell us how we can be that option. Vivat Jesus! Antonio Bañuelos, State Deputy 3

Iowa State Council Knights of Columbus Brother Knights, This Solemnity of Pentecost brings to a conclusion our Easter season of We fast for 40 days and then we feast for 50 days. But we know that we cannot live all our lives on a spiritual high. We have to come down off the mountain to a more earthly reality. Jesus also entered a new reality, which we celebrated in the Ascension of the Lord. And we remember that where he has gone, we hope to follow. We are entering a long stretch of Ordinary Time. Our task as Knights is to not let this be merely ordinary time, but may we make this an extraordinary ordinary time? How do we do this? We do this by grounding ourselves individually and corporately in our principles of unity, charity, fraternity, and patriotism. These attributes must be part of the fabric of our being, individually in our personal Catholic life, and corporately as a band of brothers, united in the ideals of Fr. Michael J. McGivney, our honored founder. We begin a new year in our councils and assemblies. Let this time be an occasion to renew our commitment as a Knight of Columbus, and to engage in our council and assembly activities to grow the Knights of Columbus to be the great band of Catholic men who serve God, the Church, and country with the integrity of a Catholic gentleman. Father Bill Reynolds State Chaplain Iowa State Council, Knights of Columbus 5

Iowa State Council Knights of Columbus Brother Knights and Ladies, It is an honor and a privilege to welcome you to the beginning of another fraternal year of the Iowa Knights of Columbus! In the past years, our Worthy State Deputies have challenged us to GO MAKE A DIFFERENCE and BE COURAGEOUS and those mottos should be the essence of what makes us Knights, and should remain always on our lips. This fraternal year we need look into ourselves and reflect why we became Knights of Columbus, and that is because WE ARE CALLED! We are called to fulfill Fr. McGivney s mission to protect the spiritual and financial welfare of Catholic Families. We are called to support our communities and display the virtues of charity. We are called to become better sons, brothers, husbands and fathers through our examples and deeds. And we are called to bring other Catholic men into our order I recognize we are a brotherhood of volunteers and it becomes increasingly difficult to find time in our hectic lives to GO MAKE A DIFFERENCE, but it is because we find time to BE COURAGEOUS that we make a difference. This year we need to remember as it says in Peter 2:21: For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. Brothers, WE ARE CALLED and I look forward to heeding that call with you as State Membership Director, and learning how we can better serve our families, church, and community together. Vivat Jesus! Scott Valencia State Membership Director 6

Iowa State Council Knights of Columbus Brother Knights, As we start a new Fraternal Year, we should recognize the role and importance of solid council programs. A Knights of Columbus council can work wonders; in fact, with its many programs, it can help change the community, town, city or neighborhood in which you live. The programs we are presenting are simply ideas. The way your council engages that idea is what is important. For your programs to be successful, your council should take ownership of your programs. Just because another council in the state does a program one way, doesn t mean your council must do it that way. Put your own mark on your programs. If you embrace your programming as a tangible product and activity of your council, you will have more success than simply copying what some other councils have done. We in the Knights of Columbus are first and foremost a Catholic, family, fraternal, service organization. Everything we do is in the name of charity and service to our fellow human beings. By having strong council programs, your council will become an important force for good within your parish communities. You will become the group your pastor calls on because he knows he can count on you to get the job done. Your influence on the lives of others will be seen. There s another reason for strong programs; they help attract men to your council. Think about why you joined your council. In many cases, it was because your council did a fish fry, sponsored a softball league, led the Rosary before Mass, or handed out some food to a hungry family. Their example influenced you. Strong programs bring men and more men means stronger programs. Membership and programs naturally should go together. Supreme asks each council to turn in a Form SP-7 by the end of the Fraternal Year for the Columbian award and it is an integral, mandatory part of achieving Star Council. I ask that you track your progress on your programs and that your program director keep track of those for the SP-7 submission. Don t forget the Order s emphasis on the Building the Domestic Church while Strengthening our Parishes program. This program is the heart of what Knights of Columbus programs are all about. You are helping your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ with having homes filled with the abundant joy of Christ. Finally, my program team stands ready to help your council in whatever way we can. I look forward to working with you this year to improve your council s programs and help make Iowa a Circle of Honor jurisdiction. Vivat Jesus! Mike DeMoully State Program Director 7

Since November 2015, Supreme has been mentioning this initiative of the Knights of Columbus. The goal is to have every council renew their focus on supporting families as the domestic church, and strengthen our local Catholic parishes. Why do we refer to families as the domestic church? We mean that each family is an assembly of believers that together participate in the work of God. By using the Scripture term "domestic church," we emphasize that family is not simply a social concept, but rather a state of life established by God. The concept of Domestic Church is not a new one but it is something rediscovered following Vatican II. Part of our work is bringing this vision for family life to an even wider audience and to this generation of parents and families. In the coming year, you will be reminded of specifics on how this initiative will help your local councils grow in their charitable outreach, renew the bonds of fraternity among current members, and serve as a natural recruiting opportunity for new brother knights. Here are the current programs designated as the preferred programs of the Building the Domestic Church initiative: Building the Domestic Church Series (kiosk) Family Week Celebrations Family Rosary Spiritual Formation Groups (Into the Breach) Family Fully Alive Keep Christ in Christmas Journey to the Inn Holy Family Icon Prayer Program Consecration of Families to the Holy Family Simple Supper and Stations Food for Families Father s Day Affirmation of Wedding Vows Our Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson, remarked Today, the Knights of Columbus is providentially positioned to play a key role in the new alliance between the Church and the family But for us to do so requires that we adopt new methods. The Iowa State Council is excited about this initiative and hopes that your council too will find this initiative to be fruitful in our shared mission to protect Catholic families and render aid to the sick, disabled and needy of our communities. More information is available on our website, iowakofc.org, as well as the Supreme website, kofc.org/domesticchurch. 14

Spiritual Formation Groups Into the Breach explores 3 questions: What does it mean to be a Christian man? How does a Catholic man love? Why is fatherhood so crucial for every man? Other spiritual formation studies can be done Family Fully Alive To cultivate life as a domestic church, a family must deliberately welcome God into its home. This program has been created to help each family do this. Through prayer and reflection each family can grow in holiness together. Monthly themes, meditations, Scripture readings, faith sharing, social activities and volunteer service projects for whole family Designed especially for young families New ways to bring light of Gospel into homes Booklets (#10162) are available through Supreme Keep Christ in Christmas The birth of our Lord Jesus Christ brought a great illumination of hope into the world. Help spread the light of Christ each Advent by: Lighting and blessing a Nativity scene and/or Christmas tree Caroling, collecting clothing and food for the needy, or serving snacks and refreshments for a parish family social Combine this event with the Journey to the Inn program Sponsor a Christmas Poster Contest for the youth in your parish Submit a Keep Christ in Christmas advertisement to your church bulletin or local newspaper, and include it in your council newsletter The joy of Christmas is to be shared by all, and the true joy comes from the birth of Jesus! Celebrate the season with your family and council members in the manner it was intended, by keeping Christ in Christmas! 17

Journey to the Inn Franciscan missionaries in the 16th century found that simple reenactments of the story of Christ s birth could touch the hearts of those they encountered. The Spanish missionaries referred to these ceremonies as Las Posadas meaning the inns or the shelters as they gave emphasis to Mary and Joseph s search for shelter before Our Savior s birth. Contemplating St. Joseph, fathers and husbands learn prudence and true devotion Contemplating Our Lady, wives and mothers progress in their pilgrimage of faith Publication #9898 is available from Supreme Marian Prayer Program 18 th Marian Prayer Program will begin in August 2017 with an image of the icon to be announced. Image of icon to be brought into parishes Booklets included with the icon for prayer programs Prayer cards will be available Icon will travel in Iowa until July 2019 Councils should coordinate with their District Deputy Consecration of Families to the Holy Family Families today face many struggles, both through cultural pressure and through the personal struggles that accompany family life. Despite these struggles and partly because of conquering them families have great capacity for love and joy, a joy that is strengthened through the peace and truth found in Christ. To help families live out this joy of Christ, Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William Lori has composed a prayer through which families may come together to consecrate themselves under the protection of the Holy Family. Strengthen families spiritually by inviting Jesus, Mary and Joseph into your homes Invite families of your parish to offer this prayer of Consecration to the Holy Family at all Masses on the first Sunday after Christmas (December 31) Hand out prayer cards (#10371) at your parish available from Supreme 18

Simple Soup and Stations Councils should partner with their parishes to sponsor a "Simple Supper & Stations" on Fridays during Lent. If your parish already prays the Stations of the Cross, ask your pastor's permission to serve a simple supper of meatless soup and bread to parishioners and attendees before or after the stations. This provides a communal opportunity for participation in the traditional Lenten observances of fasting and abstaining from meat. If your parish doesn't already pray the Stations together, ask your pastor if he would consider adding both the suppers and Stations to the parish calendar. Prayers, meditations and hymns can be found in The Way of the Cross: Traditional and Modern Meditations - #363 from Supreme Food for Families The Knights of Columbus is committed to ending hunger in local communities by asking local councils to participate in the Order-wide Food for Families Program. Since 2012, the Knights of Columbus has donated over $8.5 million and 14.7 million pounds of food to local food pantries, community food banks and soup kitchens. People tend to remember pantries at Thanksgiving and Christmas, but summer months can be lean at pantries Supreme offers financial rebates for every $500 or 1000 pounds of food donated by Councils or Assemblies - see Form #10057 Father s Day Affirmation of Wedding Vows Father s Day is an important time to celebrate the role of fatherhood within the Christian family and is an ideal day for fathers to celebrate and honor their marriage vows. Annually sponsoring this event on the third Sunday of June will serve to make your council visible to the parish community and show your member s support for all fathers and husbands. During these events, Knights and their wives along with all the married couples of the parish have an opportunity to affirm their commitment to their wedding vows. After the event, councils should host a reception where they can congratulate each couple and thank them for their witness. Involve chaplain because of implications with non-recognized marriages A Covenant Renewed certificate #2745 is available from Supreme 19

Membership V.I.P. (VERY IMPORTANT PROPOSER CLUB) Since 1882, more than 1.9 million men have borne the title of Knight. Collectively, these individuals have dedicated millions of hours to benefit the Order, the Church, and our society. To continue their good work, we must add new members to our organization. The VIP (Very Important Proposers) Club offers councils a way to publicly honor recruiters and to inspire future recruiting. Further, the VIP Club helps keep everyone aware of the importance of recruitment as an ongoing activity. Through unfaltering faith, fellowship and commitment, Knights have supported our Church, strengthened our Order and helped better our society as a whole. The VIP Club recognizes successful recruiters, thereby strengthening their resolve and encouraging Knights to further persevere in their recruitment efforts. Increasing Knights of Columbus membership is essential to building our future. Initial enrollment in the VIP Club is at the 2-member level. Knights can ascend to higher levels by recruiting 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 50, 75, 100, 200, 300, 400, or 500 members. 21

Membership Shining Armor Award Awarded for service to the Order with distinction during the first year of membership, the Shining Armor Award is given to those men that exemplify what a true Knight of Columbus is. The concept of the Shining Armor Award program is to get new members active in the many facets of the Knights of Columbus as early as possible and assist in maintaining that activity and also honor them as a valued member of your council. To qualify for the Shining Armor Award new Knights must during their first year of membership: Be involved in at least 3 council service programs. Attend at least 3 council business meetings. Receive their Second and Third degrees. Meet with their council s insurance field agent. Recruit at least one new member. These are the qualifications for the basic program; consider implementing it in your council. Keep in mind, the main focus of the program is to get new members actively involved within their council from the very beginning. Councils can order materials for this program through knightsgear.com: Qualification Cards (#4292), help new members keep track of their progress toward attaining the Shining Armor Award as their grand knight verifies each completed requirement. Certificates of Recognition (#4293) and Shining Armor Lapel Pins (#1700) will be purchased by the State Council and sent to the Shining Armor recipient. Submit a copy of your completed qualification card to membership@iowakofc.org. 22

Membership Recruitment Best Practices Make a personal appeal. There is no one-size-fits-all approach. We have to understand the needs of each young Catholic, and have a different approach for each group. One way to do this is by using affinity group marketing. That is to say, choosing people from your membership team(s) who have something in common with the prospect to engage them in K of C activities. The same approach should be followed to keep existing members active. Leverage the network. One of the Order's greatest strengths is our network, which is appealing to young adults who care about personal as well as spiritual development. Whether they share a hobby, are in the same profession, or live near each other, we should connect young members and prospects with established members who have things in common with them. We all know the Order is a great source of friendship, career success and family support. We should use it deliberately, e.g. help introducing brother Knights to people in their new community upon relocating, connecting qualified brothers searching for jobs with established Knights in their profession, etc. Put them in charge. Many young men, especially with leadership experience in college, are highly capable and should be entrusted with real (not token, young adult-focused) leadership positions. This applies to both members and new recruits. They do not join the Knights of Columbus just to stand around. State councils should focus more on abilities than tenure, and all members with the right attitude and aptitude should be given opportunities to advance. With the proper formation, they are capable of being fully invested team members, i.e. GKs, DDs and state officers. Be a resource. We all know there is more to life than Knights of Columbus membership, within Catholicism and beyond. Even when they are sponsored by other organizations, the Knights of Columbus is doing good work if we lead members and prospects to compelling programs and events. For example, many dioceses have Theology on Tap events that are attractive to young adults. There are also online resources that can be helpful to young adults seeking to grow in their faith. To learn more about programs near you, consult your parish and/or diocesan young adult ministry office. Cast a wide geographic net. We should work within dioceses to craft compelling opportunities for greater numbers of young people to gather in one place. Because parishes have only so many young adults, there should be regional and even, where possible, statewide opportunities. Young adults benefit from the support, networking opportunities, and new friendships with peers from outside their parish. Parishes benefit from an influx of new people for events they host and programs they sponsor. The Knights of Columbus benefits from the participation of ambitious men within this demographic, who comprise the K of C s leadership pool for the future. 23

Membership Objection Handlers Too busy, focusing on career, family. I understand it is a definitive time in your life, as you are establishing your family and professional life. As it turns out, joining the Knights of Columbus makes you a part of an international network of Catholic men and their families just like you. You will have exclusive access to member benefits designed to protect you and your family at this critical time in your life, e.g. our affordable term insurance product just for men age Our members are men who share your values and make up a stellar support network for the future. Too busy, focused on other charity or ministry. Your contribution to [charity or ministry] is one of the reasons we decided to approach you. We notice your gifts and talents and would value having you onboard with our charitable and faith based programs as well. Even if you are not interested in joining the Knights of Columbus right now, we notice how your work is in line with our mission. We hope you will consider partnering with our council(s) on [K of C activity]. If there is anything we can do to assist you in your mission, feel free to reach out any time. Not interested, general. I can understand you not being interested in something you do not know about. Not everybody knows of the great work done by our local councils in their parishes and communities. Not everybody knows that, just last year, the Knights of Columbus donated $ million and 71.5 million hours to charity. Not everybody knows about the great member benefits we have and all the people you can meet by joining us. We know you might have questions in the future and invite you to reach out any time to learn more. Thank you for your time. Not interested, struggling with religion. Who doesn t? The fact that you have questions is a good sign, since it means you believe. If you did not believe, you would not bother struggling in the first place. Many of the men who join our ranks, including me, are just like you. They are far from perfect, but they want to be better. Your pastor or [credible priest of choice] is the best person to talk to about this, and I would not presume to be able to give you all the answers. There are also many resources available online, e.g. Bustedhalo.com, for one. Not interested, ideological. Of course, the Knights of Columbus is not for everyone. Not everyone agrees with our strong support for the Magisterium and the hierarchy. But I assure you the Knights of Columbus is primarily a charitable and faith-based, not political, organization. Leveraging Knights of Columbus membership for electoral gain is strictly prohibited. We welcome members of all political parties and ideologies, as long as they are practical Catholics in union with the Holy See. Credit to Paul V. Phillipino Membership Development Coordinator 24

Membership Think Retention NOT Suspension Follow PROPER BILLING PROCEDURES (1845a) as published by Supreme; we request councils use the fraternal year dates for retention deadlines. Ensure council has retention chairman (may not be financial secretary) on record with State and Supreme. This chairman is to have assistance of a committee (trustees are recommended). Make PERSONAL CONTACT with the Member, THIS IS REQUIRED and is to be documented on the Retention Worksheet. This is in person or by phone call. Send 1845 Notice of intent to suspend when required, after July 1, to member, Supreme, and retention@iowakofc.org. Make 2nd Personal Contact after member receives 1845 Notice of intent to retain. This contact is also to be documented on the retention worksheet Grand Knight, Trustees and retention committee review these contacts and determine who is non -retainable. This is to be done yearly. Maximum Number Allowed: 5% of roster, or 15 per year, whichever is less. If you have more contact State Council for assistance Send completed form 100 reflecting suspension to Member, Supreme, and retention@iowakofc.org. Include the retention worksheet documenting personal contact and council retention due diligence. Plan to replace any suspensions with new Knights. Manage your membership. A Non-Retainable member are those men who are confirmed as non-practical Catholics by the Chaplain, those who cannot be located after multiple attempts or who have indicated to a brother Knight personally they no longer wish to remain a member. No suspensions or withdrawals of a Non-Retainable Members Between January 1 st and June 30 th Any notice of intent to retain is requested to be filed between July 1 st & October 15 th Suspensions or withdrawals only from July 1 st to December 31 st The State Council doesn t fight suspensions but does demand due diligence in dealing with individual members. This ensures all rights are respected and the brother s needs are met. In fact when a council follows these procedures the State Council will assist in completing the process correctly. We do not want to think about getting Rid of non-dues paying members; rather how can we get them back active with our Band of Brothers. 25

Membership Hispanic Outreach Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit (Mark 28:19) The Hispanic population in Iowa has grown by 104% from 2000 to 2014 (Iowa Data Center, September 2014) which equals to 86,300. A survey by the Pew Research Center among Hispanics, found that 55% Hispanics consider themselves Catholic (drop from 65% 10 years ago). The same survey established the median age for Hispanics is 22 years. With a population of over 168,000 Hispanics in Iowa consider: 168,000 Hispanics and 55% Catholics means 92,400 Hispanic Catholics in Iowa. Assume 40% are men that means 39,960 Hispanic Catholic Men in the state. With a median of 22 years old, that means 18,480 Hispanic Catholic Men over 22 years old. That is an enormous pool of potential new Knights. The Knights of Columbus have a strong history in Mexico (the seven saints that have been members of the Knights of Columbus all come from Mexico). Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson told us we have the moral obligation of inviting every Catholic man to join the Knights of Columbus. Have you fulfilled your moral obligation of inviting EVERY Catholic man to join us? We have an initiative at the State Level targeting specific areas in which there is a large Hispanic population. However, EVERY council has some Hispanic or ethnic population that are part of the Catholic Church. Our internal goal is 110 new Hispanic members this Fraternal Year. 26

Brother Knights, In 1882 when Fr. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus, he saw many families suffering because they had lost their primary wage earner. In trying to find a logical way to fix the problem Fr. McGivney thought of life insurance. However, Catholic families were turned away from applying. Many companies applications read on the bottom, If you are Catholic, do not apply. It is from this that Fr. McGivney started his own life insurance company and aptly named it Knights of Columbus. Knights because knights are defenders of women and children and of Columbus because Christopher Columbus was Father McGivney s Catholic hero. Why is this so important to us today? It is from our insurance program that we are able to do so many wonderful charitable acts. We are a non-profit insurance company- all the money we make off our insurance program is either given to charity or given back to our members in the form of dividends. Last year alone we gave over 165 million to charity. We are the single largest donor to Catholic charities in the world. When asking a man to join the Knights of Columbus, it is imperative he is educated on the importance of the insurance program. If there were no insurance program the Knights of Columbus would cease to exist. The insurance program is your #1 fraternal benefit as it only sold to brother Knights and their families. In Iowa, we have nearly 30 brother Knights throughout the state ready to explain the numerous programs we offer. We need you to reach out to us. Conduct a fraternal benefits night in your community where your Knights and their wives attend and learn more. It is through this partnership that we fully fulfill Fr. McGivney s dream. Why become an insured member of the Knights of Columbus? The better question is, Why Not? 27

Fraternity and Formation Ideas and Information Catechesis Have you thought about using the Catechism to build your Spiritual Formation time during council meetings? There is a great little book called Day by Day with the Catechism by Peter Giersch which provides a way to cover topics from the catechism either by reading it yourself every day or by reading a day s entry at your council meeting. A suggested format is to read the entry from the catechism. Wait for 5 seconds to let it sink in, then read the reflection. Wait another 5 seconds and read the catechism entry again. Be prepared for some discussion time after the readings. Fr. McGivney Guild Take the Guild Newsletter to your council meetings and pass it around with Guild applications. Say to your Knights, Do you get this newsletter? No, then fill out the app and send it in and you will receive it for free. Fr McGivney loves his Knights, we need to show him some love by praying for his canonization and following that process through the Guild. Keep Christ in Christmas Talk with the administrator of your local rest home and with their permission, put a display box of cards at the home with an honor system money container for people to buy cards. Even if you don t make any money and people use the cards without paying for them, you ve provided a service to their community. Liturgy Individually or as a council ask your Pastor, What can I do to help you with the liturgies of our parish? Then be prepared to offer whatever help he needs. Perhaps your parish needs more lectors, sacristans, servers, cantors or fresh ideas on the liturgy committee. Father might want need help to introduce the Rosary or Adoration to the faith life of your parish. Your interest might just be the spark he needs to get it going. Father might need to think about it for a bit. Make sure he knows you re seriously willing to step up and help him. Retreat Has your council had a one day retreat? How about a district or Assembly retreat? These are great ways to remind ourselves that we are all brothers on a journey toward our Father. Looking for a weekend of refreshing retreat for yourself? Check out the Iowa Knights of Columbus Annual Retreat in Cedar Falls November 3rd through the 5th. Contact church@iowakofc.org for more information. 28

Vocations The RSVP program is the number one way Knights support vocations. When you are looking to participate in this program each year, please contact your Diocesan Vocation Director. Remind him of the seminarians you sponsored last year. Ask him if you should sponsor the same guys or if he wants you to sponsor someone else. Make sure you invite your seminarians to parish events, send them cards or letters of encouragement. But most importantly pray for your seminarians at every council meeting and entrust their vocation to our founder, Fr. McGivney. The Refund Support Vocations Program (RSVP) was created by the Supreme Council to encourage local councils to provide financial support directly to seminarians, postulants and novices. For every $500 donated, the council or assembly is eligible for a refund of $100 from the Supreme Council. Here are the simple steps for a council to follow in making RSVP contributions: Contact the vocations director for your council's diocese to make sure you are following diocesan guidelines and that the individual needs funds Review the RSVP application (Form 2863, available on the Supreme web site) to ensure the individual is eligible to receive contributions At a council meeting, approve a payment of $500 to the chosen individual Make the check payable directly to the individual Make sure the check is drawn on the council checking account Send the check to the individual with a letter of support and an invitation to attend a council meeting or parish event Complete the RSVP application and include copies of the canceled check (front and back) or council bank statement Submit the original application to Supreme with copies to the State Vocations Chairman and the council file See the application form for more details, or contact State Vocations Chairman Dan Werner at vocations@iowakofc.org or (515)

The Corporal Works of Mercy The Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teachings of Jesus and give us a model for how we should treat all others, as if they were Christ in disguise. They "are charitable actions by which we help our neighbors in their bodily needs" (USCCB). They respond to the basic needs of humanity as we journey together through this life. The seven Corporal Works of Mercy are listed below. After each work of mercy there are also suggestions and words of advice for living them out in our daily lives FEED THE HUNGRY There are many people in this world who go without food. When so much of our food goes to waste, consider how good stewardship practices of your own food habits can benefit others who do not have those same resources. Having delicious food at Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner? Donate to a Thanksgiving or Christmas food drive so everyone can have something to eat. Research, identify and contribute financially to organizations that serve the hungry. The next time you make a recipe that can be easily frozen, make a double batch and donate one to your local food pantry or soup kitchen. Try not to purchase more food than you are able to eat. If you notice that you end up throwing groceries away each week, purchasing less groceries would eliminate waste and allow you to donate the savings to those in need. GIVE DRINK TO THE THIRSTY Many of our brothers and sisters in Christ do not have access to clean water and suffer from the lack of this basic necessity. We should support the efforts of those working towards greater accessibility of this essential resource. We take it for granted that we have access to clean water. Donate.to help build wells for water for those in need Organize a group of children involved on a sports team (e.g. soccer) or a summer camp. Invite them to collect bottled water to distribute at a shelter for families. If parents can be involved, ask them to accompany their children in delivering the water to the families. Do the same for youth and young adult groups. Make an effort not to waste water. Remembering to turn off the water faucet when you are brushing your teeth or washing dishes can help, especially in regions suffering from drought. 30

SHELTER THE HOMELESS There are many circumstances that could lead to someone becoming a person without a home. Christ encourages us to go out and meet those without homes, affirming their worth and helping them seek a resolution to the challenges they face. See if your parish or diocese is involved with a local homeless shelter and volunteer some time. Donate time or money to organizations that build homes for those who need shelter. Many homeless shelters need warm blankets for their beds. If you can knit or sew that would be an extra loving gift. There are millions of children and families who are on the move, fleeing from war, illness, hunger and impossible living conditions, and searching for peace and safety. Engage parish groups of children, youth, young adults, and families in doing some research on the causes and challenges that these families face to survive. Contact Catholic Social Services, or diocesan offices of peace and justice for help with your research. Seek ways to provide shelter for the homeless locally, regionally, nationally or internationally. VISIT THE SICK Those who are sick are often forgotten or avoided. In spite of their illness, these individuals still have much to offer to those who take the time to visit and comfort them. Give blood Spend time volunteering at a nursing home Get creative and make use of your talents (e.g. sing, read, paint, call Bingo, etc.)! Take time on a Saturday to stop and visit with an elderly neighbor. Offer to assist caregivers of chronically sick family members on a one-time or periodic basis. Give caregivers time off from their caregiving responsibilities so they can rest, complete personal chores, or enjoy a relaxing break. Next time you make a meal that can be easily frozen, make a double batch and give it to a family in your parish who has a sick loved one. VISIT THE PRISONERS People in prison are still people, made in the image and likeness of God. No matter what someone has done, they deserve the opportunity to hear the Word of God and find the Truth of the message of Christ. See if your parish, or a nearby parish, has a prison ministry and if so, get involved. Volunteer to help out or donate to charities that give Christmas presents to children whose parents are in prison. 31

BURY THE DEAD Funerals give us the opportunity to grieve and show others support during difficult times. Through our prayers and actions during these times we show our respect for life, which is always a gift from God, and comfort to those who mourn. Send a card to someone who has recently lost a loved one. Make your own card and use some of these prayers. Visit the cemetery and pray for those you have lost. Spend time planning your own funeral mass, read through the Order of Christian Funerals and find our hope in the Resurrection. GIVE ALMS TO THE POOR Donate money to organizations that have the ability to provide support and services for those in need. Do research and find organizations that put people in need first, rather than profit. Skip the morning latte and put that money in the collection basket at church. Find a charity that is meaningful to you and volunteer your time or donate. This Lent, give up eating out at restaurants. Pack you meals and donate the extra money to charities. Participate in CRS Rice Bowl. 32

The Spiritual Works of Mercy The Spiritual Works of Mercy have long been a part of the Christian tradition, appearing in the works of theologians and spiritual writers throughout history. Just as Jesus attended to the spiritual well-being of those he ministered to, these Spiritual Works of Mercy guide us to help our neighbor in their spiritual need. The seven Spiritual Works of Mercy are listed below. After each work of mercy there are also suggestions and words of advice for living them out in our daily lives. These all can be done in your councils! COUNSELING THE DOUBTFUL Everyone has moments of doubt in their faith journey. Nevertheless, we should always remember that Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life and turn to him along our way. Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may eventually become wise" (Prov 19:20) The Cross of Christ "the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength" (1 Cor 1:25) Has someone asked you for advice? Orient your response to Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life Follow Christ with the witness of your life so that others may see God's love revealed in your actions Accompany a friend who is struggling with believing to join a parish group for service or faith formation, share a book you found useful in dealing with your friend's faith concern, and worship at Sunday Mass INSTRUCTING THE IGNORANT Learn about our faith and be open to talking with others about our beliefs. There is always something more to discover about our faith. Go on a service trip or short term mission trip. No time? Donate to support someone on their service trip. Volunteer to help with religious education programs at your parish Invite someone to go to mass with you this weekend Know your faith! Read through the USCCA to find out more about the Catholic faith and how to live it. ADMONISHING THE SINNER Do not judge, but be supportive in helping others find their way and correct their mistakes. Together we can learn to walk more closely with Christ. In humility, we must strive to create a culture that does not accept sin, while realizing that we all fall at times Don't judge, but guide others towards the path of salvation (see Mt 7:1-2) When you correct someone, don't be arrogant. We are all in need of God's loving correction. We should journey together to a deeper understanding of our shared faith "Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother's eye" (Mt 7:5) 33

COMFORTING THE SORROWFUL Be open to listening and comforting those who are dealing with grief. Even if we aren't sure of the right words to say, our presence can make a big difference. Lend a listening ear to those going through a tough time Make a home cooked meal for a friend who is facing a difficult time Write a letter or send a card to someone who is suffering A few moments of your day may make a lifetime of difference to someone who is going through a difficult time FORGIVING INJURIES Forgiving others is difficult at times because we do not have God's limitless mercy and compassion. But Jesus teaches us that we should forgive as God forgives, relying on him to help us show others the mercy of God Let go of grudges Saying sorry is something we learn as kids, but how often do we really mean it? Forgiveness transforms hearts and lives Participate in the Sacrament of Penance Pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet BEARING WRONGS PATIENTLY Do not be bitter about wrongs done against you. Place your hope in God so that you can endure the troubles of this world and face them with a compassionate spirit. Frustrated with someone? Step away from the situation, take a few deep breaths, pray the Our Father, asking God for patience PRAYING FOR THE LIVING AND THE DEAD Prayer is one of the most powerful ways we can support others. Joining together in prayer for the living and the dead entrusts us all into God's care. Request a mass intention for a friend or family member who is going through a tough time Request a mass intention for a friend or family member who has passed away Keep your own book of prayer intentions, writing down the names of those who you are keeping in your prayers Ask a friend or family member if there is anything you can pray for them about Through prayer, entrust your cares and concerns for those around you to God 34

SAFE ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM Recognizing that children are a precious gift, the Knights of Columbus has always made their safety and well-being the highest priority in the Order's programs and activities. In partnership with Praesidium, an organization that has worked to provide knowledge and tools that safeguard against sexual predators for more than 20 years, the Order continues its strong tradition of maintaining the highest standards regarding the protection of young people. Through this partnership, the Order provides youth leaders with access to the most up -to-date resources to keep children safe, including Praesidium's Armatus online training, background screenings, and an exclusive hotline to report child safety concerns (1-844 KOFC SAFE ( )). All materials are available in English, Spanish and French to make the content accessible to all members who will be asked to fulfill organizational requirements. Please note that the Praesidium Armatus online platform is an English site, but each training course is available in both French and Spanish. All members of Knights of Columbus, especially youth leaders, grand knights and faithful navigators, are required to report any suspicion of sexual, emotional, physical abuse or neglect of a child participating in Knights of Columbus programs. If you have direct or indirect knowledge of or have reasonable cause to suspect abuse or misconduct against a minor participating in any Knights of Columbus program, including Columbian Squires, regardless of whether the incident occurred recently or in the past, report any and all information immediately to: KOFC-SAFE ( ) All information submitted is maintained in strict confidence. Knights of Columbus prohibits retaliation against those who have direct or indirect knowledge of or have reasonable cause to suspect abuse or misconduct against a minor and who make a good faith report of such abuse or misconduct. For questions or concerns relating to the Knights of Columbus Safe Environment Program, or to receive a handbook containing Knights of Columbus Safe Environment Program policies and procedures, please submit your request to Quianna Richardson at or youthleader@kofc.org. 47
