2 2 What s Cooking Resident Spotlight We had an awesome resident meeting this month with each department head present. Shelby, stop taking our picture; we re trying to pay attention! Our residents gathered around the cafe listening to our DIA presentation. Huge thanks to the Detroit Institute of Art. Coloring therapy with Julie! Just an early reminder that we will be having our annual rummage sale coming up quick from September 22nd to September 24th. If you have any donations, we will begin accepting them now! Keep in mind that we are not allowing clothes and larger pieces of furniture. If you are unsure whether or not we will accept what you want to donate, further discuss with Shelby or Jill and they will answer any questions you might have! County Picnic July 14th is going to be our annual county picnic. There will be a sign-up sheet for anyone interested coming soon. We re looking to fill up the bus and take it on over to the park for a Western themed luncheon and activities with our fellow Wayne/Washtenaw American House buildings. If you re interested, please let Shelby know! Senior Olympics Our second EVER American House Olympics will be held during the week of August 7th - August 11th. If you have any artwork that you d like to showcase or you re interested in doing a sporting event, this might be the activity for you! More details to come. Our Resident Spotlight for the month goes to this beautiful woman, Stephania Carrier. Over the course of the past month, she has done so well in our Dear Abby Discussions and our Trivia hour. Not to mention her favorite activity, bingo! Thank you for being a part of our family! Team Member Spotlight Unfortunately this month we weren t able to put together a conclusive employee spotlight of the month! We are still very much encouraging our residents to participate in the selection of this title. If you see something that leaves a positive impression on your life, we want to hear about it! The employee recognition box is now located in the dining room by the kitchen. If you have any questions or need help filling out a response, please let the office know!

Make a wish and blow out the candles! To all our neighbors celebrating birthdays this month, we offer best wishes. s Birthstone The birthstone is pearl, which represents health and longevity. Pearls are unique because they are the only gems to come from a living sea creature and require no polishing to reveal their natural beauty. Pearls were a favorite gemstone of the Romans. Alexandrite is a birthstone, as well. It was found in Russia and named after Czar Alexander II, who was in power at the time of its discovery. It is extremely rare, and many jewelers stock synthetic versions to keep up with the demand. Moonstone also is considered a gem. It was given its name by a Roman historian who wrote that its appearance altered the phases of the moon. The gem is believed to hold a spirit who will bring good fortune.

5 6 What You ve Missed Here are some of the things we ve been up to within the last month. Clara and Delores made fast friends with each other! In Loving Memory For those of you who didn t already know, our beautiful new popcorn machine was donated by the family of our late resident, Lura Gray. She generously donated our bingo kit as well and we wanted to take the time to appreciate just how wonderful of a woman she was. We miss her dearly and her selflessness was indefinitely one to remember. We had a plaque made to hang from the popcorn machine in her honor! Casino Trips Our MGM casino trip was a huge success! We will be going just about every month for those who like a couple hours away from home. We d like to thank MGM for giving us the Motor Coach parking so we could get all of our residents in safely, it makes everything easier on us. Keep your eyes out for the next date! The sign-up sheet can be found in the cafe under our Activity Sign-Out book. If you have any questions, please find Shelby and she ll be happy to answer any questions you might have. We made it to Buddys for pizza this month. We even had special guests Jinnie and Earl with us, it was an awesome day! Every Tuesday and Friday we will be serving popcorn in our cafe. Come and grab yourself a bag! At the Heart of Care. Lovely picture. Looking good, ladies! Our walking group taking resident dog Suzie for a walk! {ANNUALLY IN MID-JUNE}
6 7 The Power of Oatmeal By Brian Rosso, R.D. This month I am writing about the power of oatmeal. I hope you find the information below helpful in your everyday lives. Oatmeal is a low-fat and low-calorie food. Oatmeal has been shown to lower cholesterol levels. Research shows that eating oatmeal can remove bad cholesterol (LDL) from your body. Eating oatmeal can reduce your waistline. One of the great benefits of eating oatmeal is that it is very filling, which helps you feel full longer and eat less. Oatmeal is a great source of fiber. There are 2 grams of fiber in a one-cup serving of oatmeal. The soluble fiber in oatmeal can help balance blood sugar levels. Oatmeal s fiber can help lower or maintain a person s blood pressure. Oatmeal is a great source of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, which is important for vision; vitamin B-6, which can help prevent heart disease; iron; and calcium. Enjoy oatmeal every morning at American House. Mother s Day Brunch (cont) Thank you for your attendance; everything was great!
