There is nothing like looking forward to spring and the enjoyment of it being ushered in. How wonderful to live where we can experience four seasons. This will be my last article in the Epiphany Express. It is with mixed emotions that I announce to you my retirement from Epiphany Senior Housing. My last day will be May 3, It is hard to put into words what a blessing the last eleven and one half years have meant to me. Meeting so many wonderful people, both residents and their family, and working with an awesome staff and Board of Directors. Epiphany Senior Housing has a uniqueness like no other senior housing. But now it is time to venture into what the Lord has in store for my husband, Joe, and I. You guys will always be in my heart and prayers. Blessings Always, Mary

2 Tina Wolford Maintenance/Housekeeping Director With spring just around the corner, several of you have asked me if I will be hatching out baby chicks this year. The answer is yes! I will be setting up the incubator on Friday, April 20th in the Town Square area. Then on Monday the 23rd at 9:30am, I will be putting in the eggs. You re welcome to come watch me. Then with any LUCK we will have babies hatching on Mother s Day, May 13th. It s always fun to see how many of the eggs hatch and what color they are. I ll keep them here for about a week so you can watch them grow and boy do they grow and change fast. They will have some of their feathers by the end of the week. Happy Spring! From left to right; -Cindy has been a full time cook at Epiphany Assisted Living for over 11 years and has been cooking in a commercial setting for 30 years. She enjoys studying history, reading, and watching movies. -Jennifer has worked as a prep cook and dining aide at Epiphany Assisted Living for over 2 years. Jenny also works traffic control at school District 11 and coaches girls softball. Volume 12, Issue 2

3 Nancy Churchill, RN Home Care Compliance Manager Happy Spring from the Nursing Office Spring is here and it is a good time to consider getting outside and enjoying the fresh air. A little planning may help make the spring a bit more enjoyable. Practice sun safety: It is important to use sun screen, a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses, and seek shaded areas to help protect the skin. Sun screen should be used even when it s cloudy. It should be applied liberally, and reapplied every couple hours or sooner if in the water or perspiring. Sun safety is important as many medications can also cause increased sensitivity to the sun resulting in extreme sunburn, hives or rashes. Avoid heat related illnesses: As the temperature rises, so does the risk of heat related injury. Spending too much time in the sun or heat can make you sick. It is important to stay hydrated, wear appropriate clothing, and plan ahead. Water is best to keep hydrated; adding lemons, cucumbers, or watermelon can be very refreshing. Fluids such as lemonade, soda, iced tea, and coffee can contribute to dehydration due to the sugar and caffeine. It is best to wear loose, light weight, light colored clothing. Dark colors absorb the sun s rays and heavy fabrics keep the heat in. Choose a shaded area to sit, and avoid being out during the hottest part of the day. The early morning and late afternoon are the best times to enjoy being outside Be alert to fall hazards: When walking outside it is important to wear sturdy and supportive shoes. Using a cane or walker, and observe for tripping hazards such as uneven walkways is important. Diminished vision can add to the risk of falling, stay on familiar routes, and be sure there is adequate lighting. Clean up the clutter: Spring is a good time to clean up the clutter. Trips and falls are likely to happen when there is too much stuff. Check to be sure that the walking paths are clear and get rid of the throw rugs. Check the refrigerator, freezer, and cupboards for outdated foods. Remove items rarely used, and place frequently used items within reach. Be alert for the pesky bugs: Don t forget about the ticks, mosquitoes, biting ants, spiders, and bees. Wear light weight long sleeve shirts and pants, and use bug spray or citronella when out and about if the pests are bad. If allergic to bees, have an epi-pen handy. Take time to enjoy the outdoors, enjoy the fresh air, the birds, the flowers, the warmth of the sun, and hearing the children play. Happy Spring! Volume 12 Issue 2 page 3

MaryLou T. OUR COVERING When talking about faith in Jesus, we sometimes use words without understanding or explaining them. One of those words is righteous. We say that God has righteousness and that He makes people righteous, but this can be a tough concept to grasp. The way the word righteousness is pictured in the Chinese language is helpful. It is a combination of two characters: the top word is lamb and the bottom word is me. The lamb covers or is above the person. Jesus is called the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. (John 1:29) We need our sin taken care of because it separates us from God whose character and ways are always perfect and right. Because His love for us is great, God made His Son Jesus who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right (righteous) with God through Christ. (2 Corinthians 5:21) Jesus, the Lamb, sacrificed Himself and shed His blood. He became our cover. He makes us righteous, which places us in right relationship with our Heavenly Father. Being right with God is a gift from Him, Jesus the Lamb. We are righteous, not because of who we are, but because of what He did for us. He became our sin so we become righteous in Him.
