VOICE OF ATONEMENT Pastor s Corner Dear Friends at Atonement, Remember pastors come in all shapes and sizes with all sorts of interests and backgrounds good to remember as we move into the call process. FINDING THE RELEVANT The last time we checked in with Dan Shaw, 02, he was serving as a U.S. Marine chaplain at Al Asad air base in western Iraq. Now, nearly a decade later, Shaw is back on U.S. soil, pastoring Emmanuel Lutheran in Tacoma, Washington, and serving as a chaplain with a reserve Marine unit. Though he s geographically thousands of miles away, he approaches ministry in remarkably similar ways. Here in Tacoma, 70 percent of the area is unchurched, says Shaw, a husband and father of three. But the vast majority are not hostile to Christianity; it s just kind of irrelevant. It s the same way in the military. In seminary, he was taught that people wouldn t listen to a pastor who didn t first establish a relationship with them; show them how much they were cared for. Shaw s experience, though, has taught him that it s sometimes the opposite. This is not like the book of Acts, where no one has heard of Jesus. They have a filter on Christianity. The work out here is to bust up those filters before I can talk to them about the gospel. Here, you have to have credibility with them before they ll talk to you. The ability and willingness to flip the rules of pastoral procedure on their ear has served as a ministry survival tool for Shaw. When he was called into active duty with his reserve unit a few years after ordination, he didn t land in Iraq and get handed the reigns of chaplaincy by another pastor. It was, by definition, a church plant. That ministry was beyond awesome. But if we d have done your typical cultural Lutheran thing, it would have been me and two other guys there at church on Sunday, Shaw says. I found a couple of Jesus guys excited about doing church and we grabbed whatever supplies we could get. This straight up from scratch ministry didn t look like anyone s definition of typical church, he says. All manner of denominations, as well as the unchurched, were represented. People gave testimonies a very un-lutheran thing. There was a gospel choir made up of mostly African-American Southern Baptists. When a parishioner from Shaw s Kent, WA, church sent, of all things, hundreds of cigars to the base, Shaw, a non-smoker, started Holy Smokes. The wildly successful gathering of Marines smoking cigars and reading their Bibles even led to a baptism. But Shaw s theology, he says, was straight up out of the Book of Concord. For Shaw, it was and still is about finding relevance and removing unnecessary barriers. Why should we have any other barriers than the gospel message itself? Shaw asks. You re a sinner. You need saving. That s the only barrier we want. That means removing the formality of traditional Lutheran church if that s what Marines in Iraq or parishioners in Tacoma need. If we were starting a church in Saudi Arabia, a more ceremonial and formal culture, then maybe our church would look more formal and ceremonial, he says. But out here (in Tacoma) or with the Marines, they don t know about that and they don t care. So how do we get the gospel to them without compromising the gospel? These men were endangering their lives every day. I wanted them to go into those environments with the power and the resurrection and the son of God in their hearts. One weekend a month, Shaw fulfills his chaplaincy duties. He spends the time with Marines who are taking two days to do qualifying tests that would normally take a month. The schedule is full, and always fluid. So Shaw fits in ministry where he can, scheduling a church service if time allows. He spends the rest of the time in conversation and ministry with individuals and groups of Marines. Shaw is also a high school football coach, a position which affords him the ability to do ministry with kids who need the gospel and who may listen to him more than other adults in their lives. Regardless of audience, Shaw approaches it all as one big job: telling people about God. And though his fellow Marines, parishioners and football players aren t in physical battle, Shaw always has to be ready to be in active contextual ministry a skill he didn t truly learn until he was on the battlefield. That deployment I went on completely reshaped how I look at pastoral ministry in a church, Shaw says. I went on internship in seminary, but it wasn t until I had been a pastor for five years and over in Iraq that I really got to apply what I believed. That has been my guiding light in ministry. The best experience I ve had was there. That s when I learned what it actually means to be a pastor in the true, biblical sense. It s super powerful, even right now. See you in church, Pastor Keith

2 FAITH IN ACTION GLOBAL GIFT FAIR Shopping at the Global Gift Fair: It s a GOOD THING! GOOD FOR YOU because you find exciting and unique items not available in your local or national chain stores. Most items are coming direct to you through nonprofit organizations from the artisans themselves. GOOD FOR OUR VENDORS because you not only support their mission but also support women and men around the globe who provide goods and services to these vendors, benefitting from the vendors mission and work! One of our vendors, SERRV, Creating Connections, is an organization that works around the world with disadvantaged artisans and farmers. Together their collections (of gifts) serve as a tool for positive change worldwide. They create change through fair wages, empowering women, sending more children to school, protecting the environment, and developing partnerships based on transparency and respect. Baskets from Bangladesh, quilts and throws from Kolkata, India, jewelry from Kenya, the list goes on. All the money raised by SERRV goes to SERRV. Traditionally, FIA makes a nominal amount of money, usually just enough to cover expenses and unexpected costs, typically bad checks and postage! Making money is not the purpose of the GGF- its purpose is to provide a venue for organizations who are doing GOOD WORK around the globe and at home to offer their handmade gifts to us for purchase. Some of the Vendors at this year s Global Gift Fair are: Anoothi table runners, scarves, etc. made by women s groups mostly from India Koru Street items made out of recycled material from South Africa (Sun., Nov.6 ONLY) Equal Exchange Coffee, Tea and Chocolate SERRV, Creating Connections - gift items from around the world (see above) Global Mamas hand dyed textile and clothing items from Ghana Outreach Uganda jewelry, etc. made with colorful paper beads NAMLO handicraft items, all made in Nepal. Purchases help support our efforts to develop rural communities in Nepal and Nicaragua. Earthlinks candles, soaps, balms, honey, stationery locally produced by the homeless Women s Bean Project soups, breads, dips, and sweet treats locally produced by disadvantaged people through a job skills program Atonement Crafts handmade cards and gift boxes by Jan Sweeney. Proceeds go to our friends at Cristo Rey, in El Paso, Texas. They just celebrated their 15 th Anniversary. Bake Sale to benefit ELCA World Hunger ELCA Good Gifts An opportunity provided by the Atonement Outreach Committee to purchase gifts of livestock, etc. to benefit poor people around the world. Peace Corps Calendars FIA asks you to join us again at the Global Gift Fair, November 5 & 6, from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall at Atonement. To say it another way: God s Work, Their Hands, Our Support.

FAITH IN ACTION CONTINUED Speaking of Action Remember to VOTE! FIA will meet on November 10 at 6:00 PM at Suzanne R0usso s home. Her address is W. Hampden Ave. Building 14, Unit #1, Lakewood, CO., We will be sharing a meal at the meeting. If you plan on joining us, please call Suzanne at so that we can make arrangements. We will NOT meet the first Thursday of the month in November. 3 Request: One car seat (for under 40 pounds) is still needed to be able to transport our Refugee family. Thank you for the two that we did receive, however one is for a larger child. Due the nature of our world, there will never be a lack of opportunities for us to put our Faith into Action! Respectfully Submitted by Michelle Healey, Representing the FIA Committee ADULT EDUCATION In November Adult Ed is thankful for all who come to Sunday morning sessions! Having said that, we now won't meet the first two Sundays of November! (6th and 13th) This is so you can attend the Global Gift Fair on the 6th and the Mission Resources Brunch on the 13th. (Please note that Adult Ed sessions on these days were mistakenly added to the calendar at the back of this newsletter.) We will regroup on the 20th when Pastor Keith will present his archaeological dig experience in Israel. Then on November 27th, the First Sunday of Advent, we begin a Max Lucado series on Prayer (Nov 27, Dec 4, 11, and 18). "Before Amen," by Lucado, will help us to build a stronger, better and deeper prayer life. The book is readily available at local libraries (Jeffco, Denver, Arapahoe - search prospector.coalliance.org and "Request Item") or you can purchase a copy through Amazon.com. To purchase through church, signup on our form in the Narthex (deadline 11/13). The cost will be $12-15; the book received a 4.9 rating out of 5 from 61 reviews (Amazon). See our team (Carol Farr, Jacque Bland, Siv Feierabend, John Pope, Gayle Gunderson) if you have questions and suggestions. Please join us at 9:15 on Sunday mornings! HANNAH CIRCLE We will be meeting, as usual, on the third Tuesday in November, the 15th at 1:00 PM. All women of Atonement are invited and welcome. Paul and the power of failure is the topic from the Gather magazine's Bible Study. Copies of the study are available in the narthex. Sandra Reynolds will be the presenter. Thank you Sandra. Saturday, December 17 is the women's annual Christmas Potluck/Study at church. We will have the pleasure of having Pastor Keith be our discussion leader. A potluck lunch at 11:30 AM will be a pleasure also, so please plan to attend even if you are not a regular attendee at Hannah Circle. We will again collect gloves, mittens, and hats which are given to Lutheran Family Services for distribution.

4 STEWARDSHIP Consecration Sunday Is Coming Congregations that approach financial stewardship from a biblical perspective do not view the money Christians give to their church merely as a way to pay its bills. Rather, such congregations see financial contributions as a way to help people grow spiritually in their relationship with God by supporting their church s mission and ministry with a percentage of their incomes. Our congregation s stewardship committee has selected the New Consecration Sunday Stewardship Program as a way to teach the biblical and spiritual principles of generous giving in our stewardship education emphasis this year. New Consecration Sunday is based on the biblical philosophy of the need of the giver to give for his or her own spiritual development, rather than on the need of the church to receive. Instead of treating people like members of a social club who should pay dues, we will treat people like followers of Jesus Christ who want to give unselfishly as an act of discipleship. New Consecration Sunday encourages people toward proportionate and systematic giving in response to the question, What percentage of my income is God calling me to give? During morning worship on Consecration Sunday, October 13, we are asking our attendees and members to make their financial commitments to our church s missionary, benevolent, and educational ministries in this community and around the world. Every attendee and member who completes an Estimate of Giving Card does so voluntarily by attending morning worship on Consecration Sunday. We urge everyone to attend the service even if you feel strongly opposed to completing a card. The procedure is done in such a way that no one feels personal embarrassment if he or she chooses not to fill out a card. We will do no home solicitation to ask people to complete cards. During morning worship our guest leader, Pastor Dan Bollman, will conduct a brief period of instruction and inspiration, climaxed by members making their commitments as a confidential act of worship. We will encourage participation in Consecration Sunday events through the Consecration Sunday team and governing board members. Since we will make no follow-up visits to ask people to complete their cards, we will make every effort to inform, inspire, and commit everyone to attend Consecration Sunday worship. Thanks in advance for your enthusiastic participation in Consecration Sunday events. Church Council President

REFUGEE TEAM REPORT Many thanks, many thanks, many thanks! This was the heartfelt response when Pal and Cathy Bajcsi delivered two twin beds and bedding from Ron and Marilyn Andersen to our refugee family, Zai and Zizi Sian. The drive over was a little fraught, box springs and mattresses poking out the back of the pickup, looking like the Beverly Hillbillies! But all was well, safely delivered and assembled and installed in the apartment of Zizi s Mom and Dad. They just moved into the same apartment complex as Zai and Zizi. We took some garden vegetables and children s books from grandkids that were appreciated also. Aaron and Ruth sat right down with the books and Aaron promptly started counting along with Ten Butterflies Fly Away. Zizi sent some yummy, fiery salad home with us. The Sians are so grateful for all the help and care and donated items Atonement has sent and want to convey their thanks. Zizi enjoying a new chair, donated by an Atonement member 7 Written by Cathy Bajcsi America is good English classes and cooking classes so good. These were the words Zizi expressed after I attended a cooking class with her in early October. It was held at one of the apartment buildings housing refugees, which is at the end of the block on Xenia Street, close to her apartment building. After the lecture, there was a hands-on cooking demonstration, conducted by Cooking Matters. The participants made French toast and yogurt with granola. A Burmese translator helped the class make sense by speaking in Burmese (the official language) for those who spoke Chin Hakha and Karen. Laughter abounded during the hands-on cooking class. We want to thank Cathy and Pal Bajcsi for hosting a barbeque or cookout on a chilly afternoon in September (photos to the right). Zizi, her 19-year-old brother Zon, and her 4-year-old son, Aaron, all ate our American food without complaining. They especially loved the Bajcsi backyard, abundant with vegetables and flowers. We all learned the word shiver when Zizi toured the garden and began to shake, or rather shiver. At a function I later hosted, I solicited jackets for our family. Enough used jackets were collected to warm up the Sians plus a few other families! Two of my Michigan friends were visiting us that weekend, and were able to gorge themselves at this barbeque. Their comments included, how daunting it must be to come to a new country without English and the huge risk they took, especially with 2 small children. How fortunate they are to have support with Lutheran Refugee Services. And we also are fortunate to be able to work with, and learn from, our refugee family from Burma, now Myanmar.
