Dr. Jessen representing Cut to the Chase Communication, LLC discussed factors detailed in her book entitled Frustrated by Hearing Loss? Five Keys to Communication Success available in ibook or paper book format. Those factors are: The Environment, The Speaker, The Listener, Technology and Practice. Our second guest speaker, Jerry Wilkins was from the Morning Fresh Farms in Platteville, a member of the Colorado Egg Producers Association which represents seven egg farms 2 throughout Colorado. Mr. Wilkins noted that per capita egg consumption in the United States averages about 260 eggs per year. This translates into seven egg farms in Colorado which provide jobs for more than 250 families and supply nearly $100 million annually to the state s economy. There are approximately 3.8 million hens in Colorado that produce more than one billion eggs annually. The farmers also donate more than one million eggs each year to food banks. Consumers also have the choice between cage, cage free, organic, nutrient enhanced, brown and white eggs. More information can be found at ColoradoEggProducers.com. FROM MICHELE DUNCAN Here is an opportunity to help the Women's Crisis Center. On July 13th (Saturday) there will be a bike ride in Parker for women only (Tour de Ladies). All proceeds from the ride will go to the Crisis Center. I am working with a group from the Colorado Riders Club (CRC) in Parker which is putting the ride together. They have asked if our club would be interested in staffing one of the aide stations on either the 30 or 60 mile route. We'd need at least 6 people to do this and I had two sign up last week (thanks ladies!). If we get 4 more volunteers, I will tell the CRC that we will participate and we will then determine which aide station to handle. My suggestion will be to take one of the 30 mile ones so that the time commitment will be relatively short (3-4 hours probably). Please let me know if you are interested in helping. The "work" involves putting out food and water for the lovely ladies doing the ride. If you know any women cyclists let them know about the ride! They can register at tourdeladies.com OFFICIAL CORPORATE SPONSOR OF THE 2013 STATE OF THE TOWN PARKER LIBRARY Jane Johnson (below left) introduced Elizabeth Lamonia (right) and Amy Long, Manager of the Parker Library, who gave a short presentation regarding plans to build a new, expanded library on the corner lot across Mainstreet from the PACE center. Jane also presented a check from our club in the amount of $1,000. EXCHANGE STUDENT Sue Gardner informed the club that our incoming exchange student is Vedrana Kovacevic from Zagreb, Croatia. Sue needs host families NOW as school will start on August 24th! It will be a great experience, 10 3

4 OUT AND ABOUT Cathy Groves announced that the club raised $14,914 hosting the recent State of The Town event in Parker which was held at the PACE Center. Doug Young is back home recovering from his recent surgery. Gene Felgenhauer is at Sky Ridge being treated for some severe unspecified conditions. FOOD DRIVE FOR PARKER TASK FORCE The above group manned the boxes at the Stroh Ranch King Sooper s last Saturday collecting a total of 67 boxes full of food. The participants were Steve Sumption, Wayne Wagener, Jim Boyd, Tom Furmanski, Jo Stone, Bill Kelly, Dean Weaver, Alvaro Pisoni, Li Pettett and Cathy Groves. 6 WHAT PAUL HARRIS SAID The following comments were made in January 1912 by then President of Rotary International, Paul P Harris. SERVICE NOT SELF: Mr. Collins Service Not Self talk, published in the last issue of The Rotarian, deserves more than passing thought. It has given rise frequently to the question: Is it within the limit of human possibility for mortal men to actually join any club on earth for the bonafide purpose of putting himself in the position to do others business favors, or is this a new form of hypocra? Well, take the thought home to yourself and live with it for a while. The longer you stay with it, the nearer you draw toward the conclusion that it is possible and that its equal is being done every day and all the time by good Rotarians in your city and elsewhere. But, you say, to accomplish that result would be to back Ego right off the boards, this Ego that has meant so much, in fact everything, to me during all these years. It is simply Utopian. You must stop using that pipe, my boy, it s not good for you. Let us be game. We have often said that we would try anything once. We may succeed in making ourselves like it. Utopian, yes, true enough, but that s Rotary. DEFINITION OF ROTARY How do you describe the organization called "Rotary"? There are so many characteristics of a Rotary club as well as the activities of a million Rotarians. There are the features of service, internationality, fellowship, classifications of each vocation, development of goodwill and world understanding, the emphasis of high ethical standards, concern for other people and many more. In 1976 the Rotary International Board of Directors was interested in creating a concise definition of the fundamental aspects of Rotary. They turned to the three men who were then serving on Rotary's Public Relations Committee and requested that a one-sentence definition of Rotary be prepared. After numerous drafts, the committee presented this definition, which has been used ever since in various Rotary publications: "Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world.' Those 31 words are worth remembering when someone asks, "What is a Rotary club?" Carrie Oldham s memorial service will be on July 8th starting at 9:30 a.m. at Castlewood Canyon State Park on Highway 83 south of Franktown. Lunch will be served following the service. Carrie asked that donations be made to the Sierra Club or National Wildlife Federation in lieu of flowers.
