Tracy and Matt love their home as it provides Matt freedom to get around the house and be as independent as possible. It has also given them the opportunity to raise a family. In November of last year the Keils welcomed twins Matthew and Faith. Tracy raises awareness about injured veterans and Homes for Our Troops. The organization has built eight homes in Colorado and three more are coming. They buy the land, build the house, and provide the home mortgage-free to the veteran. There are 100 such homes around the country. A typical schedule for raising the walls, roof, windows, etc. in a three day Build Brigade with between 100 and 500 volunteers. It then takes three months to finish out the house. Home for Our Troops is keeping up with the demand for these homes. They have the capacity to build approximately 50 homes per year. Currently, there are between thirty and forty veterans approved and on the waiting list for a home. The cost of these homes is between $200,000 and $250,000. They are attractive homes that fit into the neighborhood very well. Homes for Our Troops was named a Top Rated Charity by the American Institute of Philanthropy. 4 TODAY IN HISTORY On May 26, 1830, Congress passed the Indian Removal Act, authorizing the removal of American Indians living east of the Mississippi River to western lands. Two days later, President Andrew Jackson signed the act into law. The young French nobleman Alexis de Tocqueville, who toured America writing down everything he observed, described the tragic results of the Indian Removal policy in his classic Democracy in America: At the end of the year 1831, while I was on the left bank of the Mississippi at a place named Memphis by the Europeans, there arrived a numerous band of Choctaws..These savages had left their country, and were endeavoring to gain the right bank of the Mississippi, where they hoped to find an asylum which had been promised them by the America government. It was then the middle of winter, and the cold was unusually severe; the snow had frozen hard upon the ground, and the river was drifting huge masses of ice. The Indians had their families with them; and they brought in their train the wounded and sick, with children newly born, and old men upon the verge of death. They possessed neither tents nor wagons, but only their arms and some provisions. I saw them embark to pass the mighty river, and never will that solemn spectacle fade from my remembrance. No cry, no sob was heard amongst the assembled crowd; all were silent. Their calamities were of ancient date, and they know them to irremediable. The Indians had all stepped into the boat which was to carry them across, but their dogs remained upon the bank. As soon as these animals perceived that their masters were finally leaving the shore, they set up a dismal howl and plunging all together into the icy waters of the Mississippi, they swam after the boat In the Pequot War a force of Puritans and Mohegans attack a Pequot village at Mystic, Connecticut, killing some 600 men, women, and children The Indian Removal Act is passed by Congress General Edmund Kirby Smith, commander of the Confederate Trans-Mississippi Department, becomes the last Southern general to surrender in the Civil War For the second time the Senate fails by one vote to convict President Andrew Johnson in his impeachment trial. 5 WHAT PAUL HARRIS SAID The Ideal of Service What a privilege it is to be linked with one hundred and fifty thousand other men of more than eighty nations, differing in languages, customs, and historical back grounds; and yet alike in one respect all businessmen, held together by a common ideal applicable to all phases of life, the ideal which is popularly known as the ideal of service. This Rotarian Age, page 80 In the more than 70 years since Paul Harris wrote these words, some things have changed, while others have remained the same. Rotary membership has grown by 800% in those 70+ years, and now both men and women share that common ideal. But the ideal of service, which is the core of Rotary, has not changed. Reprinted by permission of the Rotary Global History from the Newsletter Nuggets Section of What Paul Harris Wrote ( We are trying to fill the Ticket Sales slots from 7:30 to 9:30 pm on Friday, June 10. 6 Bill Gates, cochair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, praised Rotary for its continued success in the effort to eradicate polio, but cautioned that Rotarians will need to redouble their efforts to keep the disease from spreading -- and threatening hundreds of thousands of children. Gates, the keynote speaker at the third plenary session of the 2011 RI Convention, 24 May in New Orleans said that because of Rotary, there are many places in the world where polio is no longer considered a threat. That s a blessing and a curse, said Gates. The blessing is that in many places, polio is a disease of the past. The curse is that it is now harder for us to raise awareness that, in some places, polio is also a disease of the present. If we fail to help leaders around the world understand this, polio is certain to be a disease of the future. Gates praised Rotary for reducing the incidence of polio by more than 99 percent worldwide since Your work has brought us so far, he said. I m so proud to be a partner in the work that Rotary has been doing to eradicate polio. Gates noted that only one case of polio had been reported in India this year, as of March. India is approaching zero cases, said Gates. None of this would have been remotely achievable had it not been for Rotary. We would not be where we are without you. Nor can we get to where we re going without you. Gates said that he and his wife, Melinda, have made eradicating polio their foundation's top priority. With the world on the threshold of eradication, the hard work really begins, he said. Polio eradication has been our single biggest investment in recent years, as far as innovation and creativity. The last 1 percent will be the longest and hardest 1 percent, he said. It will require more work and more commitment than ever before. Without the redoubled effort of everyone in this room, and your fellow Rotarians around the world, we will not succeed. Redoubling is crucial to ending polio. GOLF TOURNAMENT Everyone needs to get involved to make this event successful! GET THOSE FOURSOMES SIGNED UP! 6 Membership in Rotary International If you asked a Rotarian if he or she belonged to Rotary International, the individual probably would look puzzled and answer, Of course I m a member of Rotary International But in this instance, the confident Rotarian would be technically wrong. No Rotarian can be a member of Rotary International! The explanation of this apparent contradiction is simple. The constitutional documents of RI state that membership in Rotary International is limited to Rotary clubs. More than 31,000 Rotary clubs belong to the organization we call Rotary International. A Rotary club is composed of persons with the appropriate qualifications of good character and reputation and a business or professional classification and who serve in an executive or managerial capacity. The Rotarian belongs to a club the club belongs to Rotary International. This technical distinction is not obvious or even known to most Rotarians and seldom does it create any problems or complications. It does explain, however, why the Rotary International Board of Directors places expectations upon and extends privileges to Rotary clubs, rather than to individual Rotarians. If someone asks if you belong to Rotary International, your most accurate answer would be, No, I belong to a Rotary club? But it is doubtful anyone would understand the difference or, in fact, would really care. A GARY MERAZ TRUE STORY A couple are getting ready for bed after a long day s work. I look in the mirror, and I see an old lady, the woman says to her husband. My face is all wrinkled, and I m sagging and bagging all over. And look at this flab on my arms. Her husband is silent. Hey! she says, turning to him. Tell me something positive to make me feel better about myself. Well, he says, your eyesight is still great. 7
