The Season after the Epiphany truly pulls back the curtain on the son of God as he s grown to be a man. We become intimate with how Jesus lives, how he loves, and how he wants us to be in today s world. God wants us to see through the life of Jesus the depth of a relationship with God. We watch Jesus baptism, the call of his first disciples, his Sermon on the Mount, and Transfiguration unfold before our eyes. These stories are rich in meaning and teaching about God s law, God s commandments, and God s desire for us to live together in community and peace with one another. Jesus shows God s love and hope to the world. Throughout the gospel of Matthew, Jesus turns our ideas about the accepted order of the world on their heads. We can t take the ways we ve known as a given. Beginning with his baptism, Jesus reveals his place among God s people. He is baptized by John the baptizer, not the other way around, to emphasize that it s precisely in the midst of God s people that Jesus will live out his ministry. The Sermon on the Mount exemplifies reconciliation, justice, giving, peacemaking, integrity, truth speaking, and honor. Jesus calls on all of us to examine our hearts and lives and follow his example to practice a more perfect love. This love will strengthen us individually and strengthen the communities we live in. I hope that you will join me in pulling back the curtain on our congregation throughout our next sermon series, may we find a community striving to reveal the light of Jesus in our lives today Don t forget our weekly Bible Studies: Monday at 7:00 pm and Wednesday at 11:00 am

3 ~~WHAT S HAPPENING IN FEBRUARY~~ UNITED METHODIST WOMEN NEWS The UMW will hold their monthly meeting on Tuesday, February 18, at 7:00 pm, at the church. This meeting is the annual Prayer and Self-Denial Meeting. Be ready to share your Valentine Stories with the group. All ladies are invited to come. EMMAUS MONTHLY GATHERING This month the District Emmaus Gathering will be held on Friday, February 21, at St. George UMC in St. George, at 7:30 pm. TWIN OAKS SING-A-LONG Every second Monday of the month, at 3:30 pm, a group of our Cokesbury members gathers at Twin Oaks Retirement Home to lead a Sing-a-Long for the Twin Oaks residents. This monthly outreach ministry would be delighted to add new voices to their group. No prior experience required. Call Mac Ham for more details. FOOD PANTRY Our monthly Food Pantry is held every third Saturday of the month at 9:00 am. If you are aware of anyone in the or zipcode who needs food assistance please tell them about our monthly Food Pantry outreach to the community. Every fourth Sunday of each month Romayne Eaddy, our hat lady, will collect a special offering after worship service to replenish our monthly food pantry. Please remember those in need. Our Church Library Come and enjoy your Cokesbury Library on Sunday mornings or during regular church office hours (Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m.). The library has a wonderful variety of Christian books and DVDs for your entire family, including sections devoted to Children, Youth, Fiction, Christian Living, Christian Growth, Reference, etc. In order to see a list of the books currently in the library, feel free to visit our Cokesbury Library online catalog at w ww.li brarything.com/catalog/ Cokesbury. Several people have had library books checked out for several months to a year. Please check your home and return any outstanding library books so that others may enjoy them also. After Many years if service, Jeannie Keller has resigned as our church librarian and we are looking for a replacement to help keep our library organized. If you think you might be interested in this volunteer position please check with Lyn in the church office or with Pastor Megan. HOME BOUND COMMUNION Home Bound Ministries would be pleased to serve communion to anyone who is homebound. If you are home bound (or know someone who is) and would like to receive communion from Cokesbury please contact Pastor Megan or the church office at WE ALWAYS NEED MORE SOAP! Thanks to all of you who have given soap to this on going ministry. Each month Cokesbury UMC furnishes 50 to 60 bars of soap to the community supported Shalom Ministries. You may also chose to give money toward the soap ministry. For more information on this important community outreach ask Marian Gentry. Cokesbury UMC extends our deepest sympathy to: The family and friends of long time Cokesbury member, Dorris Mae Myers, at her passing. Julia Ivey and her family at the passing of her sister-in-law, Claudine Starrett. and THE YAH YAHS FEBRUARY LUNCHEON will be held on Wednesday, February 12, at noon, in the FLC. The meal this month will be Lasagna and salad (furnished by the Yah Yahs). We need bread, tea and desserts to go with the meal. Call Peggy Peek to see what you can bring. All are welcome. Our kitchen committee ladies send home food with the families after funeral dinners in cartons that don t need to be returned. If you have empty margarine or cool whip tubs or any plastic disposal type containers with lids please bring them to church so that they can be put to good use here at Cokesbury. If you have any questions call Peggy Peek. Thanks for your help. Janet Ivey and her family at the passing of her step-mother, Vicki Ray. NORTH CHARLESTON UMC TEA ROOM The North Charleston UMC, 1125 E. Montague Ave. will host it inaugural Tea Room. Silent Auction and Gift Shop on Friday, February 7 and Saturday, February 8 from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm. All food will be homemade and will feature chicken salad, quiche, okra soup and desserts, made fresh daily. The Silent Auction will have a wide variety of exciting items to bid on and the Gift Shop will have homemade crafts and one of a kind gift items. All are welcome.

4 OUR FEBRUARY OUTREACH MISSION PROJECT Lowcountry Orphan Relief, Inc. (LOR) is a non-profit organization that provides goods and services to children who have been abused or neglected. They work directly with other non-profits, schools, foster parents, and government agencies to identify the individual needs of these and other children in severe situations. Want to make a donation to help LOR s children? Gently used: clothing, pajamas, coats, books, stuffed animals, and shoesall sizes from preemie to adult (suitable for teens), especially khaki and navy pants and shorts and solid color polo type shirts for school uniforms They would love new: socks, underwear, toiletries (can be travel sizes), school supplies and book bags All donations can be dropped off in the Mission box that is located outside of the Cokesbury sanctuary doors each Sunday or in the narthex during the week. 5 Notes From the Music Department "Praise God in his sanctuary! Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his excellent greatness! Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him with sounding cymbals!" [Psalm 150:1-5] In this scripture verse we see a wide variety of instruments: strings, percussion, wind and brass instruments (even dance!), all praising God in accordance! God created it and He saw that it is good! I wonder what His will is for our congregation. What talents did He hide among us? Wouldn t He be pleased to hear us praising Him with instruments? Or is it possible that in our congregation nobody can play any instrument? Or is it too hard to learn an instrument? Or we don t have time for it? What are our excuses? I have a friend who in her twenties decided to learn to play the oboe a beautiful sounding instrument, but one of the most difficult ones. Much to her surprise, she learned to play it pretty decently in less than a year! It is possible! In fact (I know you know this, too): anything is possible with God! Please, prayerfully consider your role in our worship services. I d be happy to work with you! It is not only for the minister, the music director and the choir! God is calling you to get involved! We ve got a Pool Party coming up! TWO WALK TO EMMAUS WEEK- ENDS ARE COMING UP SOON! The Men s Walk will be held March 27-30, and the Ladies Walk will be held the following weekend, April 3-6. There is still room for more Pilgrims on both the men and ladies walks. If you are interested in either walk please talk to any Cokesbury Emmaus member. Helen Ford, Marian Gentry, Charlotte Myers, or Bette Renaud are active in our Emmaus Reunion Group. Coming in February our Children s Ministries will hold a Pool Party at the Danny Jones Center. We will never forget the many visits our Church Family paid Dorris while in both places. Each of you made our lives much easier during these difficult times. God bless you and your families. We want to be sure everyone who wants one has a copy of our newsletters. Cokesbury will host the Spring Lay Servant Ministries School on March 14, 15 and 16. The classes will be: BASIC Lay Servant Ministry, Discovering Spiritual Gifts, Theater Workshop, Caring/Grief, FIVE Practices of Fruitful Congregation, and Worship. If you are interested in registering for one of these classes we need to know as soon as possible. Class sizes are limited. The registration form, must be signed by Pastor and send to the District Office by February 21, to assure you are registered. Cokesbury will pay the registration fee for Cokesbury members wishing to take the BASIC course or one of the advanced courses. Forms are available in the church office.
