I Corinthians 8:9 We Americans are all about freedom. And freedom is exactly what our text is about this morning. Jesus died to make us free. But what does that word mean: freedom? Many believe that freedom means not having to answer to anyone. Being perfectly independent in all of your decisions. By adding the word Christian in front of freedom, aren t we restricting freedom somewhat? Doesn t Christian Freedom mean that we are no longer totally free, but we are ruled by the principles of Christ? And is that really freedom anymore? Luther gave these two statements about Christian Freedom: 1. A Zion s Annual Voters Meeting will be held Today immediately following lunch. If you are a member of Zion, but not a voting member, you can become a voting member at the meeting. The requirements to become a voter are: 1. A communicant member of Zion 18 years or older. 2. Received as a voting member by resolution of the Voters assembly. 3. Subscribe to the doctrinal standard and adhere to the Constitution and Bylaws of the congregation. LADIES: The annual LWML Prayer Service, which is for all women of Zion, will be at Holy Cross on Saturday, February 10. Registration and muffins will be at 9:30 a.m. followed by the Prayer Service at 10 a.m. Let s meet at Zion s south parking lot at 9:15 a.m. and carpool to Holy Cross. (We will have a short business meeting after the service. Board members will not meet.) Christian is a perfectly free lord of all, subject to none. 2. A Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to everyone. It sure seems to mean that those statements are complete opposites of each other. This morning, we dig into the Doctrine of Christian Freedom in the 8th Chapter of Paul s First Letter to the Corinthian congregation. We must remember the freedom that Jesus won for you from your sins! Jesus died to free you from all guilt. And now he tells you to live, freely, and lovingly. Questions: What does freedom mean for us as Americans? What does freedom mean for us as Christians? What does Luther say about freedom? 5 Luther Academy of Music Winter Recital Thursday, February 1, 6:30 PM Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church Students at Martin Luther School are given the opportunity to take not only instrumental band instruction during the school day, but also private voice, piano, strings and guitar through Luther Academy of Music. Come and hear the lovely music our LAM students have prepared for the winter recital! Benefit Lunch The churches of All Nations Lutheran Church, Rock Lake, Immanuel Lutheran Church Rolla, and Zion Lutheran Church Munich are having a benefit for Pastor and Lisa Ramey due to a fire in their farm home. It is to be held on Sunday, January 28 at the Rock Lake unity Center (old school). Meal will be provided. Free will donation. 6 WE HAVE AN EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITY TO REACH MORE KIDS IN THE BISMARCK/ MANDAN COMMUNITY WITH THE LOVE OF JESUS. On February 8, 2018 generous donors are matching your donation dollar for dollar, with a match up to $5,000. The goal for this year is $15,000 to help more students hear about the love of our Savior, Jesus Christ and receive a high quality education along with it.
