1 October 7, th Sunday After Pentecost Zion Lutheran Church Phone: (701) Fax: (701) Website: Find us on Facebook, search: Zion Lutheran Church In the World but Not of the World John 17:15-19 Last week we heard the importance of our individuality in Christ, and the importance that we use our individual gifts for the greater purpose of helping out the church as a whole. This week we are shown that while we are in the world it is not where we belong. We belong to God, and God is holy and pure. We see how he covers us with his righteousness and purifies us through his consecration of himself, we are sanctified. Our holiness as saints, literally in Greek holy ones, comes from Jesus. His holy service before God culminating in his sacrificial death on the cross, does not purify him, he has always been pure and Youth Bake Sale October 14 between services and after 2nd service. Funds raised will help youth attend the National Youth Gathering in Minneapolis next summer. General donations accepted as well. New Weekly Bible Study The Book Of Moses will begin Saturday, October 6. Group will meet in the Conference Room at 3:30 pm. Read Genesis 1:1-6:8, Isaiah 42:5-43:10, and John 1:1-17 and come prepared to discuss. For more information, contact Stacy Woldie New: Ladies Bible Study every week starting October 11, 1:30 pm in the conference room. Fall LWML Quarterlies are here and located on the counter in the upper foyer. holy. His sacrificial life, death, resurrection, and ascension instead purify us, his holy ones. He draws us through his word, both written and preached, that we may see Jesus, and through him be reunited to his Father. Jesus prays that we may be sanctified in the truth, which comes from his holy Word; the Word which is fully revealed to us in Jesus. Questions 1. How does the church show the truth of Jesus Christ to the world? 2. Through whom are we sanctified? 3. Where do we find the truth? 4 Today is LWML Sunday, and we d like to call to your attention the display at the back of the sanctuary which focuses on various aspects of the organization. One of the items is an oversized Mite box (see Luke 21:2-4). The mites (coins) are collected and go to various projects here and throughout the world. This may be of interest to you; so if you desire to support our work, we invite you to use this opportunity to drop coins into the box to be included in the offerings to the mission grant recipients. The quilts and the school bag are examples of supplies that will be going to Mexico this spring. Historical documentation of the LWML is also available for your perusal. Zion s LWML meets the second Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. It is a great group of mission-minded women, and we have a lot going on. Please consider visiting to see what we are about and to possibly join us in our efforts to show concern and support in various ways here in Bismarck and in our country and in our world. If you have questions, please call our president, Nancy Brown ( ), or any member. Page 4

6 V. GOD'S STEWARDS ARE IN THE WORLD, BUT NOT OF THE WORLD. What does this mean? God's stewards recognize that the Lord sets them apart from the world and by the transforming power of the Gospel sends them into the world to live out the Gospel. What does God's Word say about this? Rom. 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will. John 17:15-18 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. There are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into this world, I have sent them into the world. (cf. John 20:21-23) Gen. 12:1-3 John 16:33 How is this done? The LORD said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all the peoples on earth will be blessed through you. I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. As children of God through faith in Jesus Christ, and with the Holy Spirit's help, we will: Emphasize the privilege and the accountability this privilege entails of being unique children of God with specific gifts that honor the Lord and bless others; Recognize the personal and sensitive nature of the steward's response; and yet emphasize the truth that Christian stewards are members of the Body of Christ and are in kingdom work together with fellow Christians; and, Remind Christian stewards that God showers blessings upon those who manage them wisely and well for the common good. As children of God through faith in Jesus Christ, and with the Holy Spirit's help, we will not: Emphasize how the Gospel transforms stewards' attitudes in, about and toward the world; Emphasize the Christian witness of stewards in the decisions that are made; and, Encourage the support of appropriate projects and activities both within and outside the church. As children of God through faith in Jesus Christ, and with the Holy Spirit's help, we will not: Limit the scope of Christian stewardship only to "church-related" projects and activities; Use spiritually defective approaches and motivations from the world that are based mainly and primarily on the criterion that they "work;" or, Forget the daily tensions and struggles of being God's stewards in but not of the world. Men s Network meets again Saturday October 20th at Shepherd of the Valley from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Page 6 Whether you are mourning the death of a loved one who died several years ago or the more recent loss of a family member, you are invited to... Take Heart In Your Grief. Sunday evenings starting Oct. 7, :30-8:00 PM Zion Lutheran Church 413 East Ave D. Bismarck Led by Rev. Thomas R. Marcis Jr. and Rev. Les Wolfgram.
7 God commands that I honor authorities. In the Bible account for this week, Joseph Cares for Jacob, we see this command in action as Joseph cares for his aging father. Through His Son, Jesus, God forgives us when we fail to honor authorities. Discuss, Whom has God put in authority over you? How can you honor those in authority over you? I wanted to share a little about the lock-in that was held on Sept 28th. There were 42 youth in attendance. (very exciting). The theme was Fear Factor. For the Bible story, we went over the Ten Plagues and they were able to try certain items representing the plagues. We also played group games and had free time that the youth love! ~ Russ Blood - Tomato Juice Frogs - Prunes Gnats - Chocolate Covered Ants Flies - Larvae Livestock - Head Cheese Boils - Gushers Hail - Marshmallows Locusts - Edible Crickets Darkness - Walk Blindfolded Firstborn - Lamb A special thank you to the volunteer s: Lin dsey LaMonta gne, Gary Sem mel, Becky Kemnit z, Grace Wolfg ram, Melanie Schlit tenhardt, Vica r Schmeling, and Traci Hils abeck. Help us get to Bethlehem by Christmas! Our MLS family groups are counting the quarter mile laps that they walk around the school block each Friday. Our goal is to walk enough laps to cover the mileage for us to get to Bethlehem by Christmas. First we will walk to the airport in the Twin Cities. Then we will fly to Nazareth. Once we get to Nazareth, we will walk the distance that Mary and Joseph took to Bethlehem.
