1 mahomet united methodist church Our Mission: To lead people to Jesus and help them grow as disciples. 5/30/2013 Volume 18, Issue 6 Final Thoughts Saying Goodbye For the last year or so I have been seeing a pastoral counselor on a monthly basis, a very good friend of mine whom I have known for more than 40 years, simply to help me process the things I have been experiencing lately in my life and in the church. He knows me probably as well as any person in this world except for my wife knows what makes me tick, what motivates me, what brings me joy, sorrow, hope and anxiety, even anger. When I saw him in mid-april, I was describing to him all the difficulties and frustrations involved with selling our home, and I shared that, because of it all, I thought I was experiencing some depression. He disagreed. He said, Glen, after all that you have described, and the way you have talked about your house and all the time, effort, and money you have put into it over the last eight years to make it a comfortable home for you and Susan, I don t think you re experiencing depression at all. I think you re experiencing grief! Boy, was he right! Until coming to Mahomet, we have always lived in someone else s house, and though we have always put a lot of work and effort into each one, both inside and out, leaving it in better shape for those who came after us than it was when we moved in, and even though to us it was a sacred trust to maintain it and make it home for the time we were there, in our mind it never was really ours. We knew we would move eventually, and so though we loved each house, we never allowed ourselves to get that tied to it in any kind of proprietary way. Not so this time. This time we are leaving what has truly become our home. Our home. Not the parsonage, not the manse, not the place provided for the pastor to live. OUR HOME. And I m going to really miss this house. Being what we could afford, it s not much of a house; many of you know it is just a double-wide manufactured home, a home we really didn t like at first; but time changed that. But there is virtually no room or feature in the house that we have not rebuilt, remodeled, resurfaced and made better. Same with the exterior and yard. I think I can honestly say that we have the nicest yard in the subdivision. And, as Walter Brennan said in The Guns of Will Sonnet, that s no brag, just fact. And I m going to miss it. I remember every tree, bush, and perennial planted. I remember every project, every improvement, every screw and nail. Every fixture, piece of tile, shingle and brush stroke. I remember it all and I m missing it already. Those of you who have had to move from a beloved home are probably nodding your head in agreement. You ve been there. You understand. You know that kind of grieving. But as deep as my grieving over leaving this home is and preparing to move yet again to someone else s house, a house that, to be honest, hasn t really been given a whole lot of love or care by the people who live there now it is only one facet of the grieving I am doing, grieving that has its deep roots simply in leaving this community and all of you in the church. Some of you are grieving, too. It is so hard to leave people that you ve known, worked with, laughed with and cried with, people you have argued with, made decisions with and deeply loved. And the older I get, and the less future there is ahead of me, the harder it becomes. But, it is a part of life, a part of the itinerant ministry, and do it we must. There is much about my ministry here that I celebrate and also some that I regret. I have tried to follow God s leading, and in these difficult and truly transitional times for the church in general, that has not always been received by everyone with full acceptance. But sometimes it takes that kind of thing for the church to come to a tipping point in its life and to move in new directions. As I spoke about in my message of May 26, it s a matter of trying to please God, not please people. With some things there is what is right and what is wrong, and with these things there can be no compromise, for to do so is to disobey God. Still, we never know fully whether we ve followed the right path, at least not until years later. Time will tell. As I sat down to write this article, I realized that it is the last one I will ever write as pastor of this church. So let me say this: I ask your forgiveness for anything that I have done that has caused pain, for that was never intentional. I also ask your forgiveness for those things not done or left undone, and those are many, for just as the stuff of life often gets in the way of living, so does the stuff of ministry sometimes get in the way of servant leadership. And in similar ways, I offer my forgiveness to you, for we are (Continued on page 2)
2 2 (Continued from page 1) all human and sinful, and we all make mistakes. I shall remember so many of you with great fondness and Christian love. In particular, I shall often wonder about the children and how they shall grow and mature. I shall pray for them, and I shall also pray for those whose lives are precarious, whether that be for health, security or relationship reasons. One thing, one painful thing, must be said, and said clearly: when I finish my term as your pastor at the end of June, I shall cease to be your pastor, and I will not accept invitations nor return to perform any pastoral functions here, including weddings and funerals. You need to allow your new pastor to truly become your pastor, and you need to call on him for all things. He is a good man, and you can trust him. You can also be assured that I shall pray regularly for the Mahomet United Methodist Church, just as I pray for all of those congregations to which I have been appointed in the past. You have become an important part of my life, of who I am, and I care deeply about you, both individually and as a faith community. Finally, just as I hope that the young couple buying our house will appreciate it, treasure it, and love it as much as Susan and I have, I hope and pray that your new pastor will appreciate you, treasure you, and love you in the same way. Because Pastor Jeremiah and I both have two weeks of vacation time remaining, we will both be taking that time at the end of June to complete packing and moving. Our last Sunday with you will be June 16. I will continue to be available for pastoral emergencies up to June 26, which is our moving day. Jeremiah will also be available, but through the end of the month due to the proximity of his move to Farmer City. Our pulpit will be filled on June 23 by our own Dick Steeves, and on June 30 by retired pastor Ken Cox of Champaign. Thank you all for your faithful discipleship and for touching my life. I shall never forget you. God bless you all and goodbye. Yours in Christ s service, Glen W. Bocox Senior Pastor Pastor J s Reflections When I arrived in Mahomet in the summer of 2007, it was a difficult time for me. There were lots of life changes happening fast. I was finally transitioning from student to pastor in the real world. I was a time zone away from my fiancé Megan, and I was lonely in a new place far from and very different from the life I d been living. My life is very different now. It s much better. Megan and I have been married for more than five years and I can t imagine life or ministry without her as a partner. We have our daughter, Abiella, the love of our lives and I feel like my feet are much more under me. In six years I ve built up a routine here and in many ways I know how things work. Thank you to this congregation for all the things I ve learned here, what practices work with youth (and which don t), good ways to lead a meeting (and not so good ways), preaching techniques that speak to people, and sermons that might only speak to me, and lots of ways to improve my organizational skills, which believe me, as a person with ADD, I need! I also can t thank you enough for all the love you ve shown me and my family. Cards, gifts, furniture, tickets to games. I can never say thank you enough. Thanks, also, for loving us when there have been deaths in our family. Thanks for supporting Megan as she works towards her ordination this year. Thanks above all for loving our little Abiella. It s meant so much to see all the love care and prayers for our child. She has so many aunts and uncles here and they have blessed her and us so much. For my mistakes and for pain I ve caused anyone, I am sorry. If I ve been annoying, perpetuated any frustration, or hurt, I am sorry. I am grateful for the grace and forgiveness so many of you have shown me in my time here. I am also grateful for the kicks in the tail I needed a few times, too. This congregation will remain in my prayers. I believe deeply in the people here, and in the mission of this church. I believe this church can be a beacon of Christ s light here in Mahomet, and can share the Good News of Christ with many people who ve never heard it before. I want to close with a blessing from Numbers 6:24-26: The Lord Bless and keep you; the Lord make His face to shine upon you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.

5 5 Mahomet UMC COUNCIL MINUTES April 11, 2013 Present: Dennis Thompson, Judy Ash, Janet Thompson, Steve Carlson, Darrell Uebelhoer, Lee Jessup, Sandi Yarnell, Joyce Herriott, Rob Parker, Scott Nelson, Lois Meerdink, Connie Balek, Kari Couch, Marilyn Taylor, Doug Beckmann, Wiley Scott, Greg Pasley, Imogene James, Mike Nevill, Kerry Nevill I. Call to order Dennis Thompson II. Minutes from March meeting were approved III. Finance Committee/Treasurer s update Doug Beckmann March was a revenue negative month and we are headed into the summer valley but we are still on target. Our expenses are down but did not pay our conference claims. We will not be paying the conference claims in order to help with the cash flow at this time. It may be necessary to consider an operating loan. The important thing to remember is that we have paid down a lot of our debt over the last few year making us a lot stronger financially. The Church and the balance sheet are healthy. Rob Parker says he will report this to the congregation. Lee Jessup suggested we let the conference know why we are not paying conference claims. IV. Staff/Pastor Relations Committee update Steve Carlson & Lois Meerdink a. Pastoral appointment update. The Church s new minister will be Reverend John McIntosh. Staff/Pastor is thrilled with their initial meeting with him and the gifts he will bring. The congregation will be given a formal announcement at a later date but in the meantime a letter will be either ed or mailed to members of the congregation. b. Outgoing/incoming pastoral services. Steve Carlson and Terri Hunt are working on these special services. V. Historian s moment Greg Pasley The bell outside the Church was ordered in January 1895 and cast in Baltimore. It weighs 1,338 lbs, cost $240.00, and rings in the tone of G. VI. Old Business a. Mission Fund distributions Lee Jessup Pictures of the monetary distributions to MAYC, Helping Hands, Cunningham Children s Home, and the Liberian Ministry will be published in the Mahomet Citizen. VII. New Business a. Trustee co-chairs, Wiley Scott and Joyce Herriott, provided information and requested input related to a request by Ameren to grant them easement to access the transformer to provide electricity to the ball diamond as desired by the Diamond Dogs. Ameren will be putting up a power pole with the Diamond Dogs paying to hookup to the lights. An easement must to setup for this hookup. We are proposing to have papers agreeing Diamond Dogs are responsible for all cost to hookup and removal if they vacate. We also want for them to be bonded to make them financially responsible. Trustees plan to request Diamond Dogs cooperation and compliance in following the existing rules for the use of the ball field. Trustees will ask Diamond Dogs not to have any Sunday games prior to noon. b. Vacation Bible School Rob Parker A chairperson is needed for the 2013 Vacation Bible school. c. Donated Doll House Rob Parker Val Woodruff is coordinating a doll house fundraising project. The doll house was donated by the Morrison family. The Council consensus was to discourage the idea of holding a raffle. The idea of a silent auction held in conjunction with RiverFest was suggested. d. Church photo directory Rob Parker Lynn Yeazel has volunteered to head up the new photo directory. We will work on this during the Summer/Fall. VIII. Discipleship Janet Thompson We will be continuing The Way through May 19. The first Sunday in June will begin Christianity The Family Tree. This is a video series by Adam Hamilton on different parts of Christianity. IX. Future of MUMC discussion This discussion was lead by Staff/Pastor, Trustees and Finance representatives. The discussion centered around the current Church parsonage and although it meets the minimum standards does it represent us in the way we want to be represented? The parsonage requires some basic maintenance and repair work (approx. $6,600) to return it to it s proper condition before it will be ready for a new resident. In addition to the basic work that must be done at present, considerable interior updating of cabinets in the kitchen and bathrooms and replacement of the roof may soon be high priority. So do we update the house and keep it or update and prepare it for selling? With the handouts given by Trustees showing the cost to perform maintenance and repairs and the price of new homes in the area and the handouts given by the Finance committee the Council would like to strongly consider options to include looking into the prospect of purchasing a different parsonage. This motion was moved by Lee Jessup and seconded by Sandi Yarnell. There were no nays and the motion to look into purchasing a different parsonage was cleared. X. Adjournment with prayer Respectfully Submitted By Kerry Nevill

7 7 MAHOMET UMC CHARGE CONFERENCE INVITATION SATURDAY, JUNE 8, 2013, 7:00 pm MAHOMET UMC WORSHIP AREA CHAIRED BY DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT IN-SOOK HWANG Purpose of the Charge Conference will be to inform and engage the congregation on matters related to: a) available housing options for our recently appointed pastor b) the current status and potential fate of the existing parsonage c) an expression of future intent to move toward providing what might be considered to be a more appropriate parsonage d) an update on Mahomet UMC finances and potential impacts of the items identified above as a-c. Key points of the operational plan (designed to address Mahomet UMC realities, the Bishop s requirements and Rev. McIntosh s interests) to be shared and explained June 8 include: Provide a housing allowance to Rev. McIntosh (he is willing to purchase his own home in order that it would meet his personal needs and his desire to use the home as part of his ministry). At the rate provided Rev. Bocox. [Budgeting will be more manageable during our time of rebuilding the financial base of MAHOMET UMC] MAHOMET UMC would express a future intent to provide a suitable parsonage. [Sets a forward path for us as a congregation] MAHOMET UMC would commit, at the end of Rev. McIntosh s ministry, to purchase the home from McIntosh s if they so desire. However, McIntosh s may retain or sell the home to others. The home, if purchased by MAHOMET UMC could at that time become the parsonage for next minister. [Protects the pastor from certain financial risks and further expresses future intent of MAHOMET UMC to provide a parsonage] The existing parsonage, after expenses of approximately $6,600 for maintenance and repairs, could be sold eliminating the $900 monthly debt repayment. Funds, after retiring the remainder of our long term church debt, would be held in account by MAHOMET UMC to apply to future acquisition of a parsonage. [General consensus is that MAHOMET UMC should not retain the current house being used at present as the parsonage on a long-term basis] Michelle and Eric Bonham, representing Mahomet United Methodist Church, present a check for $2,000 to Ann Paul of Mahomet Helping Hands. The organization supports families in need in the Mahomet- Seymour school district, providing food and other essentials.
