1 mahomet united methodist church Our Mission: To lead people to Jesus and help them grow as disciples. 9/30/2013 Volume 19, Issue 10 From John, Being assigned to a new church puts a pastor in a big learning curve; names, faces, traditions, needs and gifts. Sometimes it seems overwhelming, but mostly it is exciting and wonderful. I have learned new things, even about old friends. Today I celebrate the deep commitment to the well-being of Mahomet United Methodist Church by its members. No task or ask seems to be too much. Time, energy and gifts are readily offered, with a sense that is a pleasure. I see exceptionally high percentage of attendance at meetings, even after some may have had a day full of meetings. I celebrate the joyful sound of this church as we gather for worship, or any occasion. It says you enjoy and celebrate the relationships of this church. I almost hate to start worship and end your happy fellowship, almost. Mahomet United Methodist Church is blessed by you, its faithful members. Intuitive to this commitment to this church is the sense that we are blessed by God. The best way to honor God and be grateful is to give back to God through the life of our church. Really, it s true, there is no better way to affirm that we are among God s most blessed children, that we recognize that nothing has been withheld from us, not even God s only Son, Jesus. Let our lives reflect our gratitude as we celebrate God s faithfulness and generosity to us. Because we have much to celebrate at Mahomet United Methodist Church, we have titled our stewardship program, Celebration Sunday. This will be October 20. Please make every effort to be there. Your presence will heighten the celebration. (Take that joy of Sunday morning fellowship and amplify it by a good crowd.) Because I think there is much to celebrate, I m buying the celebration cake. We are only going to talk about your financial gifts to the church, once. We are only going to ask once a year. Our members will be faithful, as God has been to us, and our leadership will be faithful stewards of your gifts. Only after we have our Estimate-of- Givings in and compiled will we set a budget. Our faithful response to God by these estimates will set how much or how little of God s work we do as Mahomet United Methodist Church. Its well-being and ministry is set by its membership, collectively. This will be done in worship, as an act of faith, between each one and God. When your church asks for money, it isn t really about money. It s about power, power to do good, power to do God s work. How much do you want your church to influence this world? Let us prayerfully remember God s goodness to us. Every blessing comes from God. In times of pain or struggle God has been our Rock and Redeemer. Though some may turn away, God never withdraws this great love from us. Most of all, we celebrate God s greatest gift, our beloved Savior, Jesus. He would lead us into the life and eternal life giving relationship with God, we call faith. May God grant us grateful hearts and lives of joy. FISHING FUN NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION New Member Orientation with Rev. McIntosh will be October 27 th at noon in the Conference Room next to the offices. Lunch will be provided. If you are considering membership, if you would like to learn more, if you have questions, please come. This meeting is not required for membership, but helpful. Please contact Rev. McIntosh at or jmcintosh@mumc.org. Fishing fun at Mahomet United Methodist Church will start Saturday, November 9 at 8 am. 5 5 Parish Nurse Notes October 2013 I m finding out Community Outreach is my niche. I love my work with the neighbors and acquaintances of all ages here in Mahomet. Hubbs and I have probably decided we can t physically do any more intensive mission trips but it certainly doesn t stop us from helping out here locally in our mission field of Mahomet. My position on the Champaign County Regional Planning Senior Advisory Board has shown me a venture out into the community that has developed a necessary rebirth of our Carpenters Helpers group. There are senior environmental issues that come up from time to time in Mahomet that cannot be assisted financially or physically from the county. That leaves some senior citizens in our county with no options for getting help when they can neither afford nor are able to do the work themselves. About the same time, a call came into the office from a congregation member in need of these very services. An all church memo went out to gather in the troops to take care of those issues. Later, I found out from a board meeting about the gentleman in Mahomet needing help who could get no assistance from the county programs. He was a proud Marine with a disabled wife. So another message was sent out about his needs. Maurice and I went out to talk with the home-owners and screen each situation. Maurice was my go to man with the knowledge to tell me what could or could not be done for both situations. I promised him I would not use him up doing all the work, but I needed his brain. I would ask for the funding and volunteers. So after we got the list of needs and the financing, we went shopping and delivered supplies to each site. A few people volunteered to be put on the list for working on these projects right away and I really appreciated that. Our church members were able to pay for their own repairs, but I sent out financial requests to various clubs and our church body for the second situation and got a few responses very quickly for the community neighbor. Many thanks to the generous donor who financially covered the Mahomet man s needs. Many more thanks to a wonderful guy named Phil who trimmed bushes and painted doors for Primmers and for Bob and Bernie who helped him finish up. Thanks to my husband for putting in new faucet fixtures in the East Central Illinois LOW VISION FAIR kitchen and bathroom for the Marine so he doesn t have to collect the drips in a container anymore. And thanks to Phil, Greg, Joy, and Maddie for painting the trailer roof with the aluminum protectant. This was God working through each of you. And so, it may be that we put out another call to help our neighbors when they need it. This is the local mission field we all live in, and it is a wonderful way to show the love of Christ through our actions. I am so proud of our church here at Mahomet UMC for following HIS plan to love one another as we love ourselves and for being good and generous neighbors. Please consider answering the call when it goes out the next time and join our local mission team of Mahomet UMC. Peace and greatest of blessings for you all. Cindy Bell Wednesday, October 2, 2013, 10 am-2 pm Faith United Methodist Church, 1719 S. Prospect Ave., Champaign Hosted by PACE, Inc. The Fair is designed for people who are coping with significant vision loss or who care about someone who has low vision. Information about assistive technology, medical advances, and services will be featured, along with a presentation by Dr. Jewel Lewis, Low Vision Optometrist. Complimentary refreshments & door prizes will be offered. Call Becky at (217) for more information.

6 6 Angel Food Ministry For many years the women of our church have provided home cooked meals for shut ins, illnesses, and emergency situations. At one time we had a great number of women who provided this service but the number has dwindled severely to just a few remaining angels. Of course, this is not limited to just women, but an appeal is being sent out to anyone who enjoys cooking to give your name to Alice Miller, the coordinator for the Angel Food program. Or you can call the church office to have your name added to the list. There is a need for soft type foods for the older folks, who often enjoy soups and stews or very tender meats and vegetables, because of possible chewing and swallowing issues. Jello salads and casseroles can also be tender and portioned out to last a few meals. Families with children may enjoy more course textures and spicier flavors, of course. Maybe you d like to partner with someone to provide a meal. Personally, I can make soups and salads, if someone else likes to do entrees or desserts. A meal delivery once a week or a couple of times a month can be a nice relief for those in need and allows you to serve the Lord with your gifts. Alice Miller will contact you when a need for food arises and will do the scheduling for regular deliveries. Those of you on the visiting team may want to consider this as an option for your homebound visits. Be a blessing to those around you by using your gifts and talents to serve others. Calling All Nurses After visiting with Pat O Neal and sharing nursing experience, it really piqued my interest about who all in our congregation has been a nurse in their lifetime. If you are currently or are retired from nursing as an LPN or RN, would you please jot down a little information about your life as a nurse, where you worked, what you enjoyed the most, what different experiences you remember and send them to me. I would like to compile a little nursing montage, possibly for use next May during Nurses Week. I know there are a bunch of us out there, Connie, Pat, Mary, Pam, Eileen, just to name a few, so drop me a paragraph or a story about your career of nursing service. Thanks so much. Transportation Ministry Again, this list of available drivers has dwindled down to a few saints who can be available. I currently have Kathleen, John, Gerry, and myself who have offered transportation. Please consider helping by taking someone to medical appointments, grocery shopping, running errands, transporting kids to sporting events, or even transporting to church, bible studies, or other events. There is always a need for persons with a safe driving history and a little gasoline to spare. Thanks so much for considering this and please let me know if this is something you can do. Visiting Team Am looking for a person who has a background knowledge of Tuscola from the early 1940s. I went out to visit with Bob and Pat O Neal last week and once Bob found out we were both Tuscolians he couldn t get enough! Problem was, I was born ten years too late for a lot of his memories, but he would love talking with someone who remembers Tuscola from the late 1930s to the early 1940s. He has pictures on his computer to show you and would love just reminiscing about common memories. If you are a history buff, were in the Navy, or worked in the dental field, he would really enjoy your visit. Please keep the altar flowers in mind as a special gift that you can take on your visiting rounds. Each week after second service the large bouquet is available for you to pick up and deliver to someone. There is a green folder in the Parish Nurse mailbox in the church office with the sign up sheet and a copy of the nursing home list if you need suggestions. The flowers do not have to be given to a member. They are for anyone who could use a beautiful gift to brighten their day. If you are the sponsor of the flowers for that week, you are certainly allowed to take them home, but please sign up for your date in the green folder if you want them so we don t take them to someone else. Blood Drive The next blood drive at Mahomet UMC will be on Sunday, November 10. Mark your calendars. I reported your complaints to the manager about the new red bus being high to step into and the door sticking, both which create the potential for injuries, so they are checking into that for safety reasons. Please remember to eat breakfast before donating and then donate 30 minutes of your time and a pint of your blood to save a life. Thank you!

That was caused partly because of an EPA ban on a wood preservative and partly because of the design of the windows. The manager of the window store in Champaign examined all the windows in the church and is replacing twenty of them at no cost to us. We want to thank Bob Sinclair for taking on the job of finishing the windows and getting them ready to be installed. He had help from Mike Helfrich to stain them and from Bernie TRUSTEES UPDATE Hinkle in applying the polyurethane finish coats. Scott Nelson will install them. The trustees accepted an offer to buy the parsonage at a price of $165,000. There has been an appraisal for the buyer s financing and a home inspection. We are anticipating a closing date of on or before October 4 th. We want to thank Gavin Meerdink for bringing his tractor and lift to church to help our custodian power wash the high parts of the siding and windows.
