1 mahomet united methodist church Our Mission: To lead people to Jesus and help them grow as disciples. From John, I love to tell the story, twill be my theme in glory to tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love. (The refrain from I Love to Tell the Story, UMH #156, words by Katherine Hankey). Narrative is a synonym for story. Narratives are accounts of connected events. Some are simply for entertainment. Some convey a moral or values, like fables. Some give meaning and purpose to experience. Some are frameworks for understanding the world we live in. Some are used to guide proper behavior, or to convey cultural identity (think of the American love of the rugged individual narratives), or communal identity and values. Humans in all cultures come to cast their own identity in some sort of narrative form. (Owen Flanigan of Duke University) Personally, we use narratives for self-identity, memory, and meaning-making. Sometimes we are aware of the narratives we embrace. Other times it is subconscious. What are you going to be when you grow up? can initiate a conscious personal narrative. Adopting a framework like the narrative of our parents lives can be without awareness. Narratives can be powerful. They work for the mind to remember and make decisions from stories that have meaning. The narratives we adopt, subconsciously or consciously, can have profound effects on our lives. A family narrative can pass on repeated successes or failures, healing or brokenness, down through the generations. I remember a social worker and counselor s remark, Oh, how we live out our parents lives. Sometime we adopt cultural narratives that are a misdirection from health and real happiness. What if one s framework for meaning and value came from celebrity lives and reality shows? In the healing process, people may adopt different narratives of the events of their lives. One is the restitution narrative. This is a temporary detour and I ll return to normal. The chaos narrative anticipates that things will get worse and there are no redeeming virtues or meaning in this experience. For some, the narrative is that life is the next unpleasant surprise. Often they live and act in ways that fulfill that narrative. The quest narrative is about overcoming adversity, learning (or relearning) what is most important for a positive transformation. 8/31/2014 Volume 19, Issue 8 Listen to people s stories (or narratives); they ll tell what is important (values) or what is unreconciled, like some deep hurt. Sometimes narratives tell us of their approach or perspective on life. My grandmother told me stories. She thought she was entertaining me. To me they were wonderful, sometimes adventurous, and often human in mishaps. They included the redemption of most circumstances. Always they conveyed that humor was a vehicle for dealing with life. To this day, I cherish those storytelling sessions. What are your stories? What narratives frame your understanding of life: How do you find meaning in your experience? Do they include overcoming adversity and redemption? Or is life the next unpleasant surprise? Of course, you know the story I want you to embrace and love to tell. Jesus of Nazareth revealed himself as the Son of the Living God. His mission was to bring people into a life-changing relationship with God. Jesus commitment to that mission was so strong that he would go to the cross to fulfill it. The Redeeming God would add to this narrative Easter morning. The Resurrection was not only for Jesus, but for all who would embrace the story. The Cross, death and the Tomb are part of the narrative that is conquered. The story continues. This I know, God keeps bringing life. God keeps bringing redemption and resurrection. Maybe not as dramatically as the Easter narrative. Still, all around us, different events convey the same framework, God redeems. What stories do we tell, as individuals, and as a church? What values, meaning, perspectives are we sharing? There is one story, first of all, of Jesus and his love. CHURCH OFFICE CLOSED MONDAY, SEP 1 FOR LABOR DAY

6 6 6 MAKING YOUR DOCTOR VISITS MORE EFFECTIVE Most of you realize that doctor visits can be an annoying reality as we get older. We have to go more frequently, get things checked more often, which involves your time, travel expenses or looking for help to get there. Doctor appointments are generally based on a minute scheduling pattern but as we all know, that can go awry quite quickly. Here are some of the things we do unconsciously that cause appointments to get bogged down and run over causing other appointments to get backed up. 1. Forgetting to bring a written list of current medications with you that you can hand to the nurse to check off. Relying on your memory really slows down the process while you try to remember the name of the yellow capsule you take two times a day. Please bring a written, accurate list of current meds, including all over the counter meds. 2. Write down your reason for coming in. Be precise. Do not go into the long story and history of the ailment. Have these answers ready: What is your exact problem NOW? When did it start? When does it occur? Was there any kind of diet change, a fall or accident, or change in meds that preceded the problem? What have you tried to remedy it? 3. Doctors can't fix the chronic problems, they can only help the symptoms. So if you have blurred vision, deafness, weakness or other chronic conditions, he has already done what he can do. Tell him only about new or worsening conditions. Just the facts, folks, just the facts. 4. If you have a vision, hearing, or mobility issue, please take someone with you. A lot of time is spent trying to help get you to hear or understand what is being said. A person who knows you can be a real aid to the doctor in this area. I often get thanked by physicians for coming in with seniors who need help understanding the issues. Bring a friend. 5. Bring in a list of what refills you need and where you want them called in. He knows what meds he has written down but he does not know which ones you are taking and when they need refilled. He will ask you about refills so be ready with the answer. 6. If you will need an x-ray or lab work BEFORE the appointment, try to get it done at least hours prior so he has the results on his computer before the visit. 7. If you need to discuss more than one problem or concern, please ask for a longer appointment. This is the best way to keep everyone on schedule and still get all your issues addressed. 8. NOT wait until the doctor is walking out to tell him of a serious item like chest pain. Doctors will routinely address the most life threatening issues when you come in. So if you are coming in for a rash on your leg but all of a sudden you say "and by the way, my chest has been hurting", your rash just got moved to the basement because he is now focused on the potentially life threatening issue, your chest pain. The appointment has officially just restarted with all new information needed and you have now delayed the Doctor, the rigid time scheduling, and yourself with this little info bomb. See #2 again. Remember to name the most serious problem first. This information was gathered directly from working office personnel as well as my nursing experience. No one wants to rush you through an appointment, but the facts are, minutes is a lot shorter than you think to get everything accomplished for you. You can really help everyone by trying to follow some of these basic instructions for an easier doctor visit for everyone.
