1 mahomet united methodist church Our Mission: To lead people to Jesus and help them grow as disciples. From John, We should sense the urgency in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. And he sent messengers ahead of him. On their way they entered a village of Samaritans to make ready for him.; but they did not receive him. When James and John saw it, they said, Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them? But he rebuked them. Then they went on to another village. Luke 9:51-56 NRSV There is urgency in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We read it in this account in Luke and we can sense it in other places in the Gospel. Jesus physical presence with the disciples only lasted three years, hence the need to be focused on fulfilling his mission. When we read or hear the Gospel, look and listen for that sense of urgency to be about his Father s work. Here in Luke, James and John want retribution for being rejected. Jesus quickly sets them back to the purpose of being a disciple and on to another village. The message is that we do not have time for revenge or fantasies of revenge. To be a disciple, a follower of Jesus, is to be focused on the purpose of Jesus ministry. We are called to this goal as the overriding priority. What has anyone accomplished or done well, when caught up in seeking retribution? Certainly, it is not the advancement of Jesus purposes. Is not the deprivation of a life without the Gospel of Jesus Christ enough to suffer? A life without the Good News is a life in need, even desperation. The need is great. There are many who need, are even desperate, to hear the saving Word of the Gospel. Rather than making rejection, or anything else, personal; the followers of Jesus Christ urgently must be on to another village. What if the person next to one of us in a public place needed to hear a word of grace, needed to know that there is love in the world for them, and we were like James and John; and they knew we were members of a church? How is the purpose of Jesus Christ served then? The world needs the followers of Jesus Christ to be gracious, not toxic. If James and John had their way, when would that village get a second chance to receive the Gospel and believe in Jesus Christ? And don t we all need a second chance? And is not that a core message in the Gospel? 6/30/2014 Volume 19, Issue 7 To be a disciple of Jesus Christ is to live with his claim on us, on our energies, our hearts, and our focus. Then we give up our fantasies of retribution, revenge, grudges, and biases; or any other personal agendas that do not serve the purposes of Jesus ministry. We are better off, and better people, when we are caught up in the life of a disciple of Jesus Christ. Acrimony redirects us from our purer motives, even destroys us, perhaps more than the people we resent. Most of all, the world needs to hear about what God has done in Jesus Christ. It is intrinsic to human nature to have a relationship with God. It is a deprivation to live without it. We follow Jesus into that relationship with God. We invite others to follow. We set the gracious example of the disciples path. Please do not ignore the urgency in the Gospel and the need in our world. ADULT STUDY OPPORTUNITIES Disciple Bible Study I Rev. 4 4 GREETINGS Rev. Priscilla Jaiah, Superintendent of the UMC Ganta Mission Station located in Ganta, Liberia, West Africa sent her heartfelt personal "greetings and blessings" to all of us in the Mahomet UMC congregation, according to Dennis Thompson who visited Rev. Jaiah and the Mission Station in April while assessing agricultural development programs in Liberia for Seed Programs International (SPI). The Ganta Mission Station has been a recipient of donated vegetable seeds provided to smallholder farmers, kitchen gardeners and school feeding programs supplied by SPI. The seeds have been used by Rev. Jaiah to support the Agricultural Program of the mission to help provide food and generate cash for: the school's 900-member student body to include a 4-H Demonstration Garden; a 160-bed hospital; a nurse training program; community outreach; and three UMC congregations all under the umbrella of the Ganta Mission Station. Rev. Jaiah visited Mahomet in 2012, being the featured speaker at an all-church dinner sponsored by UMW. She explained about the role of the Ganta mission in postcivil war Liberia. She especially expressed her "thanks" for the financial contributions Mahomet Methodists have made collectively and individually to support the various UMC activities throughout Liberia. Thompson had not only the pleasure of spending two nights in Priscialla's home and becoming better acquainted with her, but truly enjoyed becoming "Uncle Dennis" to her newly adopted 4-year old daughter (Yatta), 8-year old niece (Rose) and her friend (Winifred)! NEW FACES AT MUMC The Staff Parish Relations Committee is pleased to announce two new appointments to the positions of Administrative Assistant and Organist. We are thrilled to have them join our church in these two important roles. Here are some facts about their backgrounds. Cathy Peters is replacing Cindy Carlson as Administrative Assistant. She comes to us with experience as co-owner of the design firm 3 Chicks Design (Monticello), graphic designer with Dreamscape Design (Champaign) and co-manager of the retail shop Rose n Berries (Mansfield). In addition, Cathy was the editor of Active Seniors & Boomers with Discover Places and an associate support scientist with the Illinois State Water Survey. Her specialized computer proficiencies in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Dreamweaver & After Effects are great assets for this position. In August, Carlos R. Carrillo Cotto, Ph.D., will begin his role as Organist. Currently, Dr. Carrillo Cotto is Assistant Professor, Composition/Theory in the School of Music at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign. To fulfill his responsibilities in this tenure-track position, he will focus on writing compositions in his native home of Puerto Rico during the summer and winter semester break. His mastery of the organ is exceptional. In fact, he has been playing the organ for church services since he was 12! Please join SPRC and Rev. McIntosh in welcoming these talented individuals to our church family.
