2 Page 2 Vol. 17. No 12 Dec Corr. President s Column by Wally Jones E leven days to go, and 2014 is behind us. This is good for any organization, but I ask the members who have not volunteered to consider taking a crack at our 2015 needs. We can be proud that our Chapter 169 remains the largest in Florida, and I believe it is the most active one as well. It has been my sincere pleasure to serve as President these past two years. Thank you for the President s Award Plaque at the Christmas party. The party at the Mission Inn turned out great with good food and all. Now, it is up to Art Iversen to lead us forward. As First Vice President, Art has been in charge of the Chapter s Tell America Fund Raising; we collected more funds in 2014 than has ever been realized in our history! Art has already secured several stores for 2015 Fund Drives, but the continual job of assigning Team Captains and volunteers to work the Fund Drives remains to be accomplished. It is fun to be involved in one way or another. Our volunteers serve as the backbone of our Chapter s success. I do want to thank those members who worked to achieve the 2014 results (some took on several of the efforts required). The Eisenhower Center Chapter 169 Auxiliary meetings have now added two new members and a third is on the way. The intent of these meetings is add members to our ranks even though they do not attend the Senior Center meetings. However, any member of Chapter 169 may attend (is urged to attend) either or all meetings. Well, those are some of my thoughts as I write this final President s article. You must know that the Chapter President s job has been a great experience for me! Wally You will note there still are some vacancies in the Board of Directors table on page 9. Please notify Art if you would consider working with Art and the BoD in serving your Chapter. Gene Zender put together a tally of members who volunteered to help with the various Chapter functions in We achieved a 38 percent of total of the Membership.

The Disc Jockey had a good show. And all the awards. And socializing was great. That was about it except that the Chapter Elected Officers were sworn in by President Wally. 4 Page 4 Vol. 17. No 12 Dec Corr. (Continued from page 1) Luncheon Party on Friday, Dec. 6 at the church. Church pastor (and National Guard member) Chang Soon Park rendered a short service, at which they welcomed us. We, in turn, expressed our appreciation. We were then warmly escorted to a most ample array of foods, including of course, kimchee! We were most pleased that Maxine Parker (of 188 and DoF), and Jake Feaster (CID 16 and 267 Gainesville and the Association) were there with us. We have, for many years, been trying to establish a relationship with our Korean-American friends; they first responded in April 2012, and then again this December. The Chapter warmly accepts the friendship and appreciation offered to us by Rev. Park and the members of the Ocala Korean Church! As great as it was, there were two regrets: 1) that more of our fellow Chapter 169 members did not accept the open hands of the Kore- an- Americans, and 2) that I did not do a better job of conveying that welcome to our brothers in Chapters 188 Clermont and 16 Ocala! Rev Park told me personally that they want to extend their hands to All Korean Veterans in the Ocala area. (They do not understand our KWVA structure and depend on us to get the word out.) To all members who attended, if you have not yet done so, please send your warm thank you to the Church, c/o Chang Soon Park, pastor, 7710 SW 38th Ave., Ocala, FL 34476, or call at (352) Photos: top Rev. Pack welcomes us; above, church choir in Korean dress; left center, Carol presents crafted chicken to the church; and far left the Chow Line!

5 A rt Iversen swears in two new members, Carl McClellan and Harold Little at our December 20 Eisenhower Center Chapter meeting. Photo from left: McClellan, Little, Sievers, and Iversen. See page 7 for New Member photos. Our Chapter s efforts to expand its scope, and to reach new members has begun to pay of in new Chapter members! (Art says he has another who will join at the next meeting.) These Eisenhower Recreation Center in The Villages meetings are full-fledged Chapter 169 meetings designed to give members an alternative should they not be able to attend the regular meetings at the Leesburg Senior center. We present the Colors, do the POW/MIA presentation, and supply a speaker, just like we do at our regular meetings. And we explain what the Chapter is and what it does, and encourage them to join us and attend the meeting place(s) that most suits them. All Chapter official business functions will continue at the regular fourth Wednesday Senior Center sessions, and the second Wednesday Board Meetings. The Saturday, December 20 Eisenhower Center Meeting was third we have held. Thirteen nonmembers and 11 members signed the registration form. Harold Sievers prefaced the meeting with a brief explanation that he was responsible for the meeting (in the eyes of The Villages). President Wally opened the session at 2:00 p.m. by asking the Color Guard to post Colors. Joel led the Pledge of Allegiance, Frank conducted the Vol. 17. No 12 Dec Corr. Page 5 Two New Members Sworn in at Eisenhower Center! POW/MIA Ceremony, and Don offered a prayer. Wally then introduced three guests who had filled out our Guest Log forms: Richard Miller, Jim Padian, and Angelo Damore. He then turned the meeting over to Art Iversen who talked about Support our Soldiers and the Villages Honor Flights. I then told the audience about what our Chapter does, especially our Tell America program, and invited them to consider joining in that, and in all Chapter activities. All existing members are most welcome to come to these Eisenhower Center meetings. This is of course in addition to coming to the Leesburg sessions. Bill Simunek and I drove over from Mount Dora- Eustis. It was an easy 30 mile drive. As we left, Bill said I m glad I came; I enjoyed it. The following needs to be labeled Editor s Opinion. We have heard some concerns about potentially losing the Chapter as we have know it. I suppose (Continued on page 9)

7 Vol. 17. No 12 Dec Corr. Page 7 Chapter Membership Two New Members As this goes to press, the Association Membership Roster, the one that is used to mail Graybeards, says we have 80 members 77 Regular and Life paid, and three Associate Members whose dues are paid by the Chapter. We welcome two new members, at least two new photographs. Carl E. McClellan (left), of Tarrson Blvd, in The Villages. Carl says he served in Korea from as an Army Medic. Since Carl is in the Association Roster, he was included in the above count. And we are happy to welcome Harold Little, of San Mateo Drive, The Villages. Harold served in Korea with the AF 17th Bomber Wing, 95th Bomb Sqd Welcome Carl and Harold! We hope you will be able to participate in all Chapter activities. While we have been disturbed lately about our loss of members due to death and to non-renewal, it is somewhat heartwarming to know that Chapter 169 is, by a slight margin, still the largest Chapter in the State of Florida. CID 173 in Altamonte is 78, and CID 273 Gainesville is gaining on us at 58. QUARTERMASTER: This is my last QM report. The new Quartermaster is Gene Zender, You can make his job a lot simpler if you pay when you order from him. The Chapter shirts come with the KWVA Patch, S, M, L, XL, Navy Blue, Aqua Blue $28.00, XXL $ Chapter Ball Caps War or Service $10,00. All of these are at our cost. Art Iversen Color Guard Report The Color Guard had only one outside event in December. It was at The Villages Veterans Memorial Park for Pearl Harbor day, Dec. 7th. Art Iversen presented the Chapter Flag for the event. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for the award that was presented to me at our banquet, and to say, I did not do this alone. This award should go to the entire Color Guard Crew. I want to thank all of you who participated. It s been a good year for all of us. Again, thank you. We shouldn t if we keep getting new members. And if we build a relationship with the Eisenhower Center group. If we do not get new members, we will lose the Chapter soon anyway. Just like most of the rest of the Chapters are dwindling away. The Villages offer us a potential source of new members that no other Florida Chapter likely has. Why not take advantage of it? It s a matter of adequate publicity. The idea of creating an alternate Chapter meeting site in the Triangle area Tavares, Eustis and Mount Dora has also been mentioned. That too would give us an opportunity, but that is a long way off, if ever.
