2 Page 2 The Scuttlebutt Editors note: The President s Column by Art Iversen will not be in our Scuttlebutt this issue. Instead we have the following very somber column below. You may send your expressions of sympathy to: Arthur Iversen, 611 San Marino Dr., The Villages, FL, Lois Jean Iversen Passed away peacefully on Monday, November 16, 2015, surrounded by her family. 3 The Scuttlebutt Page 3 Membership 114, again! by Tom Thiel, Secretary/Membership Sys. Mgr. I n October s Scuttlebutt we reported that we were number three in the nation with 114 members! Then sadly, we learned of the loss of one of us, John Hayes. And shortly after that the loss of a very long time member Ted Morford, Jr. We were very sad to lose John and Ted because they meant so much to the chapter. And also because that took us back to 112 members, which was good enough to be a solid fourth. But, at November s Saturday Member Meeting we added two new members, Peter Prosper and John Sirignano both from The Villages. We value Peter and John becoming new members and note that this will again take us back to 114 and in sole possession of third in the organization based on chapter membership! We didn t obtain member photos so will present Peter and John in the January 2016 Scuttlebutt. Correction Ed O'Toole I had Ed in the Army Helicopters, he was with HMR 161, Marine Corps Squadron attached to the 1st Marine Corps Division. ### UCF VHP Interviews were terrific! More on Dec 3. UCF VHP military history students interviewed ten chapter members at Leesburg and Lady Lake Libraries on November 5. TV! Yep, it played. Just plug it into a USB port on the back of your smart TV and select that as the source. Worked first time! The reaction by our members was something like terrific! in response to my asking how did it go? Vi s photo of Carol Becker being interviewed was representative of the interview process. Note that Carol s interview also was the subject of a front page Daily Commercial article by Theresa Campbell. In addition to Carol, Gloria and Jim Corbet, Don Leitstein, DJ Lynch, Jack Reynolds, Marv Smiley, Alan Stover, Bob Vanas and George Wikane were also interviewed. More interviews will be conducted on December 3 at Lady Lake. Members to be interviewed then are Woody Wood, Jr. (24th IDA member), Al Schuetz, Joel Briggs, Gordy Talbot, and possibly Gene Zender. How do you view your recording? You either have already or will soon receive a thumb drive containing your interview. I wasn t able to view mine at first. My computers were both Windows 7. I tried everything to view the MP4 file but to no avail. So, I asked my wife. She said play it on your smart I also found that it will play on my new laptop, which came with Windows 8. I suspect it will play on Windows 10 but have not tried that Interviews Tiffany assured me they will do more interviews next year. If you are interested in being interviewed call Jack Corscadden at NJ (609) or FL You may also call Tiffany Rivera at UCF at ###
4 Page 4 The Scuttlebutt Tell America Fund Drive Program Gene Zender & Al Monahan T ell America Fund Drives are our chapter's main means of maintaining a highly active and viable chapter program. We call them Tell America drives because they enable us to present our Tell America programs, and because we use them to inform the public about the Korean War with our Drive handouts. We held fourteen drives in 2015 bringing in a total of $13, for the year. (see table below) I especially call your attention to the Team Members column at the right. It shows who we recorded as providing at least 3- hours of service at each event. Many, however, had to serve multiple shifts. This is because most members do not help at the fund drives! Also note that generally the same members support all drives My goal is to have enough members to be sure that no one has to be there for more than 3 hours. I am now scheduling our 2016 Drives and trying to obtain Captains. The Captains and I will go to the stores and obtain dates for the drives. The Captain s job is to obtain the needed drive workers, and to see to it that the drive is actually conducted. We are asking all members to participate; if you have physical limitations then please bring a folding chair. But please come. Thanks to all Tell America team members for helping us to meet our mission telling Americans about the Korean War. ### Our Annual Christmas Luncheon $25 value for $15! Tickets still available. 7 The Scuttlebutt Department of Florida DoF Page 7 DoF fits between the KWVA Association and the 21 chapters in the State of Florida. According to the DoF bylaws the purpose of DoF is to periodically meet for their common good, and to promote reunion, fellowship and recruitment. It holds a Fall Council meeting consisting of the DoF Executive Committee and the chapter presidents. It also holds a Spring Council and Convention, normally in May but this year it will be in April. CID169 is the host chapter for the April 16, 2016 DoF Convention, at the Waterfront Inn President Art offered 169 as the host chapter, and DoF accepted his offer. This will involve a lot of various activities, which we will learn more about at a Dec. 2 meeting with DoF. We ll then invite you to participate. It also will mean we will incur considerable expense. Convention Book We hope to recover these expenses by publishing the traditional Annual Convention Souvenir Book. Ads in the Convention Book are purchased by local businesses, DoF chapters, KWVA members and others. I am building the Convention Book with Publisher, the program I use for the Scuttlebutt. I will send it electronically to the printer, Ford Press. The cover is shown in miniature above left. Those at the top are full pages; those lower down illustrate 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8 page ADs from some of our members. You may view the entire book to-date and what this discussion is about at: chapter_activities/ _dfl_convention.htm You may have your own AD, if you wish Several have asked about having their own ADs. Some of these are also shown at right. Full-page (8.5x11 minus borders) are $110; half-page are $60; quarter-page are $30, and business-card (1/8th page) are $25. You will also be asked to be listed in the book s Freedom Fighters Page, also illustrated at right. This will be simply your name only and will be offered for $10.00 per name. I can build almost anything you might want, so if you are interested go to the highlighted site at the left, or call me at Do it now as I will be busy come January. Thanks Tom Thiel
