Pentecost 18 September 23, 2018 *Please stand as you are able. Congregational responses in bold. The presider for this service is the Reverend Carol Mullin. Prelude Welcome & Life and Work of the Community Lighting of the Christ Candle Myles & Lily Montgomery With joy and anticipation we light this candle, a sign that Christ is present in this place, and that he calls us here to celebrate and sends us out to serve. Opening Song Lord, Listen to Your Children Praying VU#400 Lord Listen to Your Children Praying, Lord, send your Spirit in this place; Lord, listen to your children praying, Send us love, send us power, send us grace! Call to Worship Myles & Lily Montgomery All Creation cries of change, change all around us. We come, wondering, waiting, worrying, wanting. Our hearts yearn for deepening faith, for widening connections. And so we come to this quiet place, seeking guidance, understanding, relationship. In the midst of the whirlwind of change, God gathers us in loving embrace, and whispers, do not be afraid.
Here in this place we hear God s voice calling our name; words of self-giving love, of welcome, joy, anticipation, of community. We come as individuals. But we sing our thanks to God as one in Christ. Gord Dunbar, Port Nelson U.C. Burlington On., Gathering 2012, Summer Autumn, p. 48 adapted *Hymn New Every Morning VU#405 Gathering Prayer (in unison): "Spirit within all that was and is, we gather seeking to draw close to you. We come with yearning hearts; with a deep spiritual hunger. Yet you are closer than the air we breathe, present in the touch of a hand, in a child s laughter; present within each of us. Open us up to your presence. Help us clear away the clutter and the distractions that keep us from you. Enable us to embrace the things that really matter, and thus embrace You. Amen. The Lord s Prayer An Affirmation of Our Faith: A New Creed VU#910 VU#918 *Hymn Teach Me, God, To Wonder VU#299 Theme Time Prayer: For All Your Goodness, God VU#549 Prayer for Illumination Reader: Bill Seaman Life giving Spirit, breathe on us today that in these stories and teachings, we may find hope for today, and bread for our journey. Amen. James 3:13-4:3, 7-8a Wisdom from above. One: This is the witness of the early Church. All: Thanks be to God. Mark 9:30-37 Whoever welcomes a child, welcomes me. One: This is the Good News of Jesus Christ. All: Praise to Christ the Word.
Reflection The Good Life *Hymn: Tell me The Stories of Jesus VU#357 Offering Invitation Offertory *Offertory Prayer ~ What can I do? What can I bring? What can I say? What can I sing? I ll sing with joy. I ll say a prayer. I ll bring my love. I ll do my share. Prayers of the People *Closing Hymn VU#191 May the God of Hope Go with Us VU#424 *Going Forth We go out into the world to do and to be all that we are able, to be the hands, the feet, the Word of Christ. Giving thanks to God in all things, at all times. *Choral Closing Postlude Go Now in Peace ~Words to music reprinted with permission One License# Welcome to Mount Royal United Church! 6 CHURCH COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS - CORRESPONDENCE The date for the pancake breakfast will be Saturday, November 3 rd from 8-11am and the Rummage sale will be held on Friday, November 9 th from 5-7pm and Saturday, November 10 th from 8-10:30am. COMMITTEE REPORTS: CHURCH FINANCES Local envelope givings have increased, however there has also been an increase in expenses during the year for fuel, electricity and payroll. This has resulted in an increase in the current year deficit to $21, 326 (compared with $12,026 deficit for the previous year). The bequest of $15,205 from the estate of Helen Gibson has been received. This will be used to pay for building repairs. PASTORAL CARE pastoral care committee members are interested in pursuing the idea of contacting members/past members to welcome them back to church. Cards have been prepared to reach out to persons who are not attending church and who are missed. The committee feels that it would be better to communicate with the congregation electronically rather than sending out letters. Some letters can be prepared for those who don t have internet access. Other items discussed were: when the AED machine would be arriving, the length of time since a fire prevention officer has been in the building, the idea of ushers acting as evacuation officers, signs at the entrances to direct people to the washrooms and the memorial room. UCW/CRAFT GROUP the Hubbard Unit has joined the Bremner Unit and the new name will be Mount Royal UCW. They held a planning meeting for the UCW Candlelight service and it is well in hand. They will have a coffee and muffin party on October 30. UCW and Craft Group will be making pies on October 23 rd and will hold a craft and bake sale during the coffee and muffin party on the 30 th. TRUSTEES correspondence was received from Sobeys following the changes they had made in their gift card program. They no longer allow blocks of cards to be purchased using a credit card. They have increased the amount you can get back from purchasing the blocks. When you purchase $5,000-20,000 gift cards you get 5% back but when you purchase over $20,000 you get 6% back. This was suggested as a fundraiser, we could pre-sell the gift cards in November. PROPERTY MAINTENANCE Five projects were underway this summer. They were: replacing the floor in the basement, repairing the bell tower, replacing some roof shingles, resurfacing the walkway from the parking lot/filling in low-lying areas of the parking lot and repairing the heating system. An anonymous donor came forward and offered to help financially with the improvements to the floor in the basement, cleaning of the carpet in the sanctuary and repairs to the bell tower. The five projects add up to roughly $20,000. We received a $10,000 donation and there was $5,000 in the maintenance budget.
Rummage Sale on Oct. 20, 8:30am 1pm at St. John s UC, 75 Alma St. (basement entrance) Something for everyone. Don t miss it! The following is an updated list of the YMCA ReConnect s most needed items: shampoo/conditioner, deodorant, soap, toothbrush/toothpaste, razors, tampons, non-perishable food items: canned meats, granola bars, hearty soups, Kraft dinner, trail mix, socks and underwear (both male and female), gently used winter hats, gloves, food vouchers for the grocery store, Tim Horton s Gift Cards ($5-10), cash donations (to assist with identification, damage deposits or rent arrears for housing). For your information, these items can be dropped off at a collection box at the YMCA. The UCW continues to collect: Postage stamps for Oxfam Canada. The border of the stamps should be trimmed to ¼. eye glasses for distribution to Third world countries. Aluminum pop can closure tabs You may drop any of these items in the containers at the entrance of the Bessborough door. Thank you for helping with these endeavours. No Scents make good sense. If you have and would like to receive notices regarding cancellations and other items of interest, please put your name and address on a piece of paper in the collection plate. Thank you. Thanks to a generous donation we have a transport wheelchair, rollator and walker in the church. These will be stored at the back of the sanctuary and are there should the need arise for anyone experiencing mobility issues during services or activities at the church. We continue to support ReConnect. Following their reorganization, they will provide a more detailed list of required items. From UCW - A Special Thank You to all those who have contributed and continue to support the coffee and conversation gatherings after the Sunday service. Your gifts of food items as well as coffee and tea are very much appreciated. We welcome your help at any time and food items do not need to be home baked, healthy choices are always a plus. We hope that this fellowship time continues to be part of the warmth and friendliness shown to visitors and newcomers, Mount Royal folks, young and not so young. Thank you! There is a sign-up sheet next to the coffee window.
Please be advised that we now have the technology to permit the screen operators to record and post on the church website, any regular or special services held in the sanctuary. If anyone would like to have a copy of an upcoming service on a disk, they should contact the office.
