Thanks Dee God gives us the seaons of our lives Christian Humor The Hair Cut A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and inquired of his father as to when they could discuss his use of the car. His father said he'd make a deal with his son, "You bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study your Bible a little, and get your hair cut. Then we'll talk about the car." The boy thought about that for a moment, decided, he'd settle for the offer, and they agreed on it. After about six weeks his father said, "Son, you've brought your grades up and I've observed that you have been studying your Bible, but I'm disappointed you haven't had your hair cut." The boy said, "You know, Dad, I've been thinking about that, and I've noticed in my studies of the Bible that Samson had long hair, John the Baptist had long hair, Moses had long hair, and there's even strong evidence that Jesus had long hair." (You're going to love the Dad's reply!) "Did you also notice they all walked everywhere they went?"

If you missed one or want to hear it again go to and go to sermons. Missions Thanks to all for your assistance with the Kids' food packs for the summer. We distributed 264 food packs through the Gobles and Kendall churches during the ten weeks. Thank you to the GKAMA Food Pantry for their assistance in purchasing items from Feeding America, so we were able to fill the packs with good food for low prices. Gobles also gave out many books from the Little Free Library. Families were very appreciative of the food and the books for their kids this summer. 4 Gobles Lead Team Minutes Wednesday, August 9, 2017 Serving God, Serving Community, Connecting Community with God MEMBERS PRESENT: Pastor John Brooks, Dennis Hurlbut, Wynne Hurlbut, Jan Westcott, Donna Launius, Lois Wesler, Cheryl Rumery, Terri Brooks, Chuck Grimes, Karen Grimes John opened with Devotional and prayer: Hebrews Motion to accept minutes from June meeting by Wynne and seconded by Jan. VCI Group Updates: Missions: Kid s Packs - Going well. Will continue till August 19 th. Hot Dogs and Haircuts - Hope to hand fliers out at the picnic so everyone can help distribute around town. Will post on Facebook as well. Scheduled for Wednesday, August 23 rd, 4-7pm. What s next - Discussion on providing dinner to the Fire Dept. Wynne to check on good time to do it. Will hold at the fire station. Hospitality: Going well. Lois reported she has handed out three baskets. City Clerk to help notify us of new people moving into the area as well as help from Dan Leonard. Tech: Haven t had meeting. New Guest: Has not met yet. Ministry Assessment: Will be having a meeting on Monday, August 14 th at 10am with each group. Youth: John to call Connor to get update on events. Worship Design: Working on fall. VCI Updates: 1) John reported that everyone needs to read Toxic Charity. Will hold a discussion about the book with potluck on Wednesday, September 20 th at 6pm. 2) Hospitality Station Need to call and check on it. Finance: 1) Dennis reported $11, in checking. Ministry shares are paid at 85%. Motion was made by Dennis and seconded by Wynne that we approve using Allegan Credit Union as Depository. Dennis, Cheryl and Cheri Thorpe are ones approved for access. All bills paid. Dennis presented up-to-date budget report. Need to work on 2018 budget. Do we need new line items? Needs to Dennis by September 30 th. October 26 th is charge Conference at Kendall at 6:30pm. 2) Cheryl reported that average weekly contributions to date is $1446; needed, $1514. Various savings fund(s) total; $13,924. Six Lanes of Giving for the past month: $90.00 collected for Peace with Justice Sunday. Trustees: 1) Need to call and get quote on resealing and relining the parking lots. 2) Like the sign the Allegan C.U. has put up and will check into the cost and with city to see if we could put one up. General: 1) John brought up discussion on new messaging system. It is an automated phone system that we can use for prayer requests and other types of message broadcasting we would like to do. Everyone would get the message at once. Message can be received by text or phone. It cost $35.00/month. Motion made by Dennis and seconded by Lois that we pursue it. 2) Wynne to start updating directory. Meeting was adjourned. Next meeting is September 13 th at 7pm. All are welcome to attend. 5 Kendall Lead Team Minutes Wednesday, August 9, 2017 Present: Pastor John and Terri Brooks, Joyce Bergman, Lorraine Haring, Cheryl Shaw, Keith Shaw, Pam Westcott, Freida Amos. Pastor John opened the meeting with devotion and prayer The minutes of the June 14 th meeting were read and approved. Treasurer s Report: As of July 31 st, CD: $30,03.96 (matures 3/7/19); Savings $2,063.25; Checking $ All bills paid to date. Average attendance 12, Ministry shares 67% paid. Memorial: CD $12, at Fifth/Third bank, Savings $4, Trustees: A quote for the parking lot repair was $4200. It was suggested that we try to get more estimates. The cross still needs repair. Still waiting to hear from the people with the cherry picker. UMW will not meet again in October. Checking $532.51, Savings $1, John reported on estimates on a new projector at $2000 plus an additional $2000 to have a system that will project against the back wall, or an approximate figure to replace the whole system of $5,800. These figures are not recent and are from SLS Production Services. We would like to move soon on replacing projector so we can use video material in church services. Joyce made motion that we get additional quotes, seconded by Lorraine, passed. John reported that the Worship Committee has met and begun to plan services for when the Surviving Summer series has ended. Summer Report: Fifty food packs have been handed out so far. The Kendall Kid Fun Nights have been well received. The June date was cancelled due to rain but the July date went well. The final date (August 15) will be for the whole community and will have two inflatables. Pam has chosen choir music for the season, some new, some from the files. The new music costs $ The choir will begin to meet in October. Pam also questioned the lack of office hours in Kendall, her concern that our church looks so deserted so much of the time. John restated that he will meet with anyone who desires a meeting at the Kendall church by appointment. We also discussed the possibility of Bible studies in the fall. John had some information about a computer/phone system that would contact all members with prayer requests or important announcements (such as church closing in inclement weather) for a monthly fee. We agreed that he should pursue further information. Joyce reported that she has sent our missionary support of $ in, but questions whether or not we should re-examine our support since the amount of our support is based on number of members and our numbers are down. Our next soup supper will be October 7 th. The August noisy offering will be for school supplies. Next Lead Team meeting will be Wednesday, September 13 th. The secret of true service is absolute faithfulness wherever God places you

6 Pastor s Corner A new beginning I don t know why, but to me September always feels like a new beginning, even more so than January. It must be because after those lazy hazy days of summer, it still feels like ok, let s get down to business! Now I know you are thinking uh-oh, here it comes, he s going to ask me to do something. But don t freak out, sure we have charge conference coming up in October, but that s not what I m writing about today. In honor of students and teachers who are beginning their new school year, I thought we should get back to the basics, to the beginning of everything. So, starting the first Sunday in September, we will start a new five-week worship series called The Beginning focusing on the first half of Genesis. It just so happens while I was at school this summer in one of my classes, we spent the equivalent of a half of a semester on Genesis and I discovered that there is so much more to learn in these very familiar scriptures. I hope you will feel the same way as we move from creation to God s chosen people.
