Bruce Hill took third place, Aaron Cain took second place and Charles Simms took first place in the motorcycle division. CAN YOU SAY SWEEP?

DIRECTOR S CORNER Hello Stingers! Family were off and running again with another fun filled month of events. Family, we have been busy!!!! 6 May: We held our Chat-n- Chew at the Bob Evans in Bowie Md. A great time was had by all and we actually had over 15 members present breaking bread together. We were all still in awe by the Fun Day events and could not wait to share our individual stories with one another. We had a visit by Andrew (a fellow Harley Rider) who stopped by to what was suppose to be a short hello and I ll catch you later ended up being an hour or so sit down with the HIVE (we seem to have that sort effect on people), and are looking forward to seeing him at our next gathering. As our Chat-n-Chews continue to grow in favorable numbers, we will soon have to start making reservations to accompany us which is a welcomed situation to be in. 17 May: We kicked off a very pleasant morning by meeting at Clinton Cycles before heading to the Chapter I Pancake Breakfast. Clinton Cycle had a break in the night before and a young lady had spotted 2 brand new dirt bikes in a ditch across the street, we notified management and a couple of us assisted in bringing them back across the street. Once we arrive at the Elks Lodge in Temple Hills, we were greeted with open arms by our Chapter I Family and a good hot and delicious breakfast. The HIVE represented in force with over 23 members present and we had a fantastic time. The highlight of the event was hearing the first hand accounts of the trails and tribulations some of our veterans have to deal with presented by Mr. Roger Lintz. Mr. Lintz also revealed on how the Paws For Purple Heart literally saved his life with his dog Niles. It was amazing to hear of Niles significant role in his day to day activities, it was a powerful speech to listen too. After the breakfast a group of us Grayson Dixon, Kirk Williams, Bruce Hill, Regina Smith, Frank & Karen Monroe, Lillian Cruz, Charles Simms, Toni Cain, Stan Green and myself headed over to the St Mary s Church to hear the results of the car raffle. The Church opened their arms to us to where we were able to set up a table and hold a spur of the moment Motor Awareness Event, move our bike to the entrance area for better visibility, and provide Grayson the opportunity to address over 250 people about GWRRA and motorcycle awareness (what more could you ask for). The lucky car winners were as follows: - 1 st drawing; Idabelle Bushrod, King George, MD - 2 nd drawing; Margaret Pearsokn, NW Wash, DC - 3 rd Drawing; Issac Brandham, Bethlehem, PA - 4 th Drawing (2015 Mks) Phyllis Brown, Landover, MD 18 May: We started the lovely morning out with a visit to our Chapter J family for their monthly gathering. We had a good time fellowshipping coupled with a good early morning breakfast to get the day started. We later made a HIVE appearance at the District Motor Awareness Event at the Regency Furniture Store Ballpark in Waldorf MD (see pictures). The weather was perfect and we had participation from all of the Maryland chapters so it was good to see and chat with our fellow family members once again. Several people stayed for the baseball game afterwards. 24 May: The weather was still in our favor as we; Lillian Cruz, Bruce Hill, Regina Smith, and Stan Green, and myself made an early morning ride to attend the Women Walking in Faith flea market event (see pictures) held at the New Beginning Christian Center in Waldorf MD, CJ joined us there shortly after. Continued on next page. Page 2

Cont from page two We all had a good time, there were a few vendors there (which is all Toni needs) but it seemed like more folks were starting to come in as we were leaving. We stayed down there for about 2 hours before heading out and making it to our second rally point by way of a brief pit stop at the house to pick up some things. 24 May: On the second leg of our day we met at RIPS to begin our journey over the Bay Bridge to participate in the Chapter L Motor Awareness Event (see pictures) that was held at the Arthur W. Purdue Stadium in Salisbury MD (about a 2 hour ride). To my delight we had a terrific turn out; Bruce Hill, Lillian Cruz, Tony Bonner (glad to have him out on the road with us for the first time), Charles Simms, Gill, Herb Gaskins, Kirk Williams, Hamp&ShaRon Conway, Stan Green, and yours truly leading the way. We anticipated some serious traffic heading over but to all of our surprise traffic was not that bad at all. We arrived a little early but things had already been set in motion by Danny for our arrival and we got the opportunity to park right in front of the ball park. Soon after, other Chapters started to arrive and we sprung into action assisting with setup, handing out literature, and fellowshipping amongst each other throughout the event, it was a great time. We hung out until the gates opened and then we made our way back home with a well-deserved dinner stop at Cracker Barrel before crossing the Bay Bridge. I think we were all ready for some food by that time, all I heard was silverware hitting the plates and elbows going up and down. We headed out after a hearty meal and after we crossed the bridge folks started breaking off and going their separate ways. The day was a long but joyful one. The staff and I truly appreciate all of your support giving Chapter B strong representation. 31 May: We had our Chapter Gathering and it was another fantastic showing by the HIVE. We were honored to welcome into the HIVE as a members Mr. Dennis Johnson and his fiancé Charlie, this is always one of the best moments in the HIVE, bringing in new family. Dennis and Charlie were ready to declare their membership when they showed up on their new 2012 Goldwing Trike. Dennis was already wearing his vest and Chapter B patches (a surprise to us all) but they were on a mission. WELCOME ABOARD!! After the gathering a group of us Bruce Hill, Ken Trass, Richard Blake, Charles Simms, Dennis- Johnson (first ride with the family), Frank Monroe, Terry Gardener and myself traveled up to themetropolitan United Methodist Mens Car Show for what was suppose to be a (lets check out the cars for about an hour and roll out), well to our surprise once we rode onto the premises we were automatically entered into the car and bike show, so we gracefully paid our entrance fee and proceeded to view the automobiles that were present. We decided to huddled up and initiate a APB for Hampton Conway who forwarded us the Car Show invite (not knowing we were in the show) and as expected he later showed up as cheerful as ever (Hamp being Hamp) but we decided to give him a pass because Chapter B rose to the occasion once again by taking the top three spots in the Bike Show competition. 1st place Charles Simms 2nd Place Aaron Cain 3rd Place Bruce Hill Congratulations to all, we had a good time Page 3

Continued. 1 June: Bruce Hill, Tony Bonner, Lillian Cruz and myself attended the Chapter I monthly gathering which is always a good time. I ended up winning one of the 50/50 drawings during our visit. We later visited the Davies Unitarian Universalist Church in Temple Hills, MD (we utilized their parking lot during our Fun Day activities) and presented the Pastor with a Certificate and Letter of Appreciation. The HIVE has been very busy lately and now we are preparing to hit the road for a little therapy! Things on the horizon: Wing Ding is around the corner and for those of you traveling with us remember, you will need your passport because we are looking at going through Canada before dropping down to Niagara Falls and possible other attractions. Stan Green and Bruce Hill have already put together most of the route that will be traveled and it will be made available to all shortly. Canada is right after that and we will have meeting place and departure time available shortly. Remember, you will need your passport and for those of you with those high security clearances, make sure you go through the proper channels to make your job aware travels and get your Canadian insurance voucher from your current insurance company. Family, I just want to thank each and every one of you for your support. The staff and I are very excited in the strides we have made over the first five months of the year. Your continued support is the driving force in the positive direction the HIVE continues to head. You all are the greatest!! Chapter B members attend the Metropolitan United Methodist Car Show. 6 FROM THE ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTOR I hope all the Queen Bees of the Hive had a wonderful Mother s Day. May was a busy month for the chapter. Per my records, the only weekend we were not active was Mother s Day weekend. Way to go Chapter B!!!!! We had six Motorcycle Awareness Program (MAP) events this month. We started out with the MDB s Fun Day/Motorcycle Rodeo/MAP event on May 3; Queen s Chapel United Methodist Church Bike Blessing/MAP event on May 4; St. Mary s Catholic Church Car Raffle/Map event on May 17; Maryland District s Map, Waldorf, MD on May 18; Women Walking in Faith Flea Market/MAP event on May 24; MDL s MAP, Salisbury, MD also on May 24; and Metropolitan United Methodist Church Men s Car (Bike) Show/MAP event on May 31. May s newsletter covered the Fun Day/Rodeo/MAP event and the QCUM s Bike Blessing/MAP event. So I will skip them. On May 17, we attended MDI s Pancake fundraiser which benefited Paws for Purple Hearts. We heard first hand from a veteran of the Afghanistan war, Mr. Roger Lintz, about his injuries, surgeries, and struggles. He spoke about how the program Paws for Purple Hearts saved his life by providing him with a Chocolate Labrador names Niles. Niles can respond to 90 commands from opening a door to helping him pull off his socks at the end of the day. Niles will spend the rest of his life providing assistance and companionship. It was a very moving life event for everyone in attendance. The Hive had 20+ members at this event. Ms. Shirley won a basket and a Men s leather vest. Way to go Chapter B!!! After departing from MDI, some of use decided to go to the Saint Mary s Catholic Church Car Raffle to witness the car drawings in person. A decision was made to bring handouts on Motorist Awareness and hand them out if the opportunity presented itself. Grayson spoke to the pastor of the church and he granted us permission to have a MAP event. Grayson was also provided an opportunity to speak to everyone present (200+) about motorcycle safety. They provided us with a table and chairs in the center of the community room. Bruce Hill brought out the banner and handouts. Some of us manned the table and others walked around passing out pamphlets, discussing motorcycle safety, and awareness between the riding public and the non-riding public. (Out of this event, the Chapter was approached to provide a MAP event for the Women Walking in Faith Flea Market in Waldorf, MD.) Continued on next page.. Page 6

Cont On May 18, Aaron Cain, Harry Dockery, Charles & Shirley Dorsey, Grayson, Bruce Hill, and I attended MDJ meeting in the morning and had a good time. Stan Greene (MDI), and Danny & Paulette Horton (MDL) were also in attendance. Aaron spoke and thanked MDJ for supporting our Fun Day on May 3. Afterward, we went to the Wawa s in Waldorf, MD to meeting additional members (Frank & Karen Monroe, Charles Simms, Kirk Williams, Regina Smith, and Charles Johnson) who were participating in the Maryland District s MAP event at the Regency Stadium. (Grayson had a previous commitment and wasn t able to join us at the MAP event.) Every Chapter in the Maryland District was present to assist in this event. It was a beautiful warm day. Many of the Chapter members through the Maryland District invited their family member to join us at the Regency Stadium for the baseball game. We distributed pamphlets and were able to display some Wings at the Stadium entrance: Gold Wing (GW) 1800 (Al General s), GW 1800 with a trailer (Ray Hartman s) and a GW 1800 Trike (Laura Watts ). For those who pre-registered, the District gave back $5 to purchase ice cream. THANK YOU Maryland District!!!!! On May 24, we (Aaron Cain, Bruce Hill, Regina Smith, Charles Johnson (CJ), Stanley Greene (MDI) and I attended the Women Walking in Faith Flea Market at the New Beginning Christian Center, Waldorf, MD. Afterwards CJ had to depart and Stan headed home. Bruce, Regina, and I were invited to Aaron and Toni s to hang out until it was time to meet up with the Hive members at Rips to support MDL s Map event. Also on May 24, MDL s MAP event was held at the Perdue Stadium, Salisbury, MD. We (Aaron & Toni Cain, Bruce Hill, Kirk Williams, Herb Gaskin, James Gill, Hampton & ShaRon Conway, Tony Bonner, Charles Simms, and I), joined MDI, and MDJ, plus a few other motorcycle organization in passing out information and speaking with the attendees about Motorcycle safety. On May 31, we had our Chapter gathering. We were joined by MDI (Stan and Shelley Greene) and MDJ (Terry Gardner). Dennis & Charley Johnson joined the Hive. As a matter of fact, Dennis walked into the meeting wearing his GWRRA vest. He and Charley came out to check us out at the Fun Day and won a few things. They had so much FUN that Dennis purchased his patches and told us they wanted to be members. WELCOME to Dennis and Charley Johnson!!! We are proud to have you in the Hive. After the Chapter meeting, we (Aaron Cain, Bruce Hill, Frank Monroe, Richard Blake, Charles Simms, Dennis Johnson, Terry Gardner (MDI), and I) rode out to Severn, MD. We had been invited to the Metropolitan United Methodist Church Men s Car (Bike) Show/MAP event on May 31. It was a truly beautiful day for a ride. After we arrived, we were joined by Hampton Conway (in his classic car) and Ken Trass. The church parking filled up quick with visitors not participating in the competition parking in the grass. There were all types of beautiful cars and bikes. Chapter B came home with THREE trophies, yes three trophies: third place to Bruce Hill, second place to Aaron Cain, and first place to Charles Simms. Way to go Hive!!!! Continued on next page.. Page 7

Cont We have indeed had a very busy May, with sometimes two events in one day. In the beginning of the year, you said you want more riding well you have it. This is just the beginning. I hope you are continuing to look at the ride schedule to see how you can participate with us. On June 1, Aaron Cain, Bruce Hill, Tony Bonner, and I attend MDI s gathering in Waldorf, MD. Aaron spoke and thanked them for supporting our Fun Day on May 3. After the meeting, Regina Smith called and suggested that since we were still wearing our colors, we might want to join her in presenting the Davies Memorial Unitarian Universal Church (DMUUC), Camp Springs, MD with a letter and plaque for donating their parking lot for our use in support of MDB s Fun Day. We arrived just as the service was ending and Aaron made the presentation. DMUUC has invited us to participate in their Yard Sale and Fish Fry and distribute information on motorcycle safety on June 14. If you are available, please join us for this MAP event. More information will be provided regarding this event at a later date. Monday, June 16 is Ride to Work Day. For those of you who are retired, ride your bike/ trike to nearest drug store, grocery store or 7-11 convenience stores. Let the public know that we are out there. Saturday, June 21 after our meeting there is an Ice Cream Ride to Solomon s Island after the meeting. Please come out and join us!! REMINDERS: Please let Bruce Hill know if you are planning on attending either Wing Ding in Madison, Wisconsin via Canada (in July) or Region K Convention in Canada (in August). Wing Ding is the largest Gold Wing Convention, July 2-5, Some us will be going up early to attend the International Couple of the Year selection on July 1 to support our very own Maryland District representatives, Bob and Julie A Hearn (MDI). For those who have never attended, please think about adding this to your calendar. It is an outstanding event!!! Also, if you are planning on going to Wing Ding via Canada, don t forget your passport, contact your medical insurance, auto/motorcycle insurance (international proof of purchase), and credit/debit card companies. The NJ/NY Bi-State Convention (August) will be in Mount Olive, NJ. If you are planning on attending, please arrive before Saturday, August 9 for the Region Couple of the Year selection process to support our Maryland District representatives, Dan and Laura Watts (MDI). 11 Rider Education Preparing for the ride I m Safe Many people use a checklist to prepare for a trip. It might include gas, tire pressure, first aid kit, et cetera. One item often missing is the condition of the rider him/herself. Yet the rider s condition is at least as important as the condition of the bike if not more so. There is a checklist which allows the rider to check out him/herself before every trip. Easy to remember, the list is called I m Safe. It stands for illness, medication, stress, alcohol, fatigue and emotion. Let s take a look at how each of these factors affects us. The list here by no means covers all the things that can affect each of these topics. So feel free to insert your own circumstances in each of the topics and see just how real it is. Illness: Many illnesses such as diarrhea, headache or fever can dull our senses and affect our ability to scan aggressively for hazards or our ability to react to these hazards quickly. Recovering from an illness can do the same. Medication: Medication such as sleeping pills, even taken the night before, or antihistamines can make us drowsy. Antibiotics do a good job of fighting infections but also leave us fatigued for several days. Stress: Just before a trip is not the best time to air our problems. We will be in a much better mood after a good trip. Take time to relax before starting. Another thing to remember: when at all possible leave work behind. Alcohol: Alcohol can be summed up in a single phrase-don t drink and drive. Make sure there is no alcohol in your system before you ride. One drink per hour, if you must. Fatigue: Working long hours at physical labor before a trip is a sure way to start the trip with fatigue. Also staying up half the night before a trip packing. Emotion: We are all aware that being angry or sad can keep our mind off our riding, but we should know that being too happy can do the same thing. We need to take time to think things out before we start. Bruce Hill Rider Educator, MD Chapter B Page 11

DISTRICT DIRECTOR S MESSAGE I was wondering what my article would be about this month and this thought popped into my head, Motorist Awareness. Last month I talked about May and Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month coming, and did it ever! We grabbed it by the horns and held on. The very first thing that I want to do is thank everyone who assisted in making this May a huge success for Motorist Awareness. Many Chapter volunteers were always willing to pitch in, and without them it would not have been the success it was. Every Maryland member went above and beyond to ensure that we reached as many people possible. Between the District MAP event at the Regency Stadium and the Chapters events, Regina and I have attended no less than nine MAP events this month. WHEW!! I would like to start with a very special thank you to Ray & Cheryl Hartman for all their work in setting up the successful event at the Regency Stadium. Well, doesn t that sound better than saying they spent countless hours trying to make me and Regina look like we knew what we were doing!? Also, special thank you to Danny and Spanky of Chapter L and the MAP event they hosted at the Salisbury Perdue Stadium. It was also very well attended. Keep in mind there are several Conventions/Rallies in our near future that we need to lend our attention to. One is the convention of all conventions Wing Ding on July 2 5. This year it will be in Madison, Wisconsin. Of course Wing Ding doesn t officially start until July 2, but as you know, we are looking to have as many Maryland members there early and to cheer on our own Region Couple of the Year, Julie and Bob A Hearn as they participate in the International Couple of the Year selection. After the big one there is the NJ/NY Bi-State Convention in Mount Olive, NJ, August 7-10 where Laura and Dan Watts will be looking for your support. They will be participating in the Region Couple of the Year selection. You presentence will mean the world to them. And don t forget about Pennsylvania (PA). They never forget about us at WinterThing. Their Convention is in Erie, PA, September 4-6. As you ponder, Where are we going to ride to next weekend? Just take a look at the various Chapters Ride Schedules and all the activities that are going on within the District. Reminder if you haven t had it yet your fund raiser is coming. If you have already had yours, don t forget, it wouldn t have been the success it was if not for the other Chapters that supported your event. Page 13 Continued on next page...

Continued.. Something else to consider; Wings over the Smokies in North Carolina is back for those that have attended in the past, you know what fun that is. Well this year there is an added twist to it. Bob (Goose) & Dorothy Richards formerly of Maryland A are the NC District Directors. So if you have September 25-27, 2014 available, head to Cherokee, NC for a great convention. We have done a lot so far and there is a lot more to do - the season is still very young. So let s get out there and have some FUN!!! Whatever you decide to do, above all do it SAFELY and be courteous, as each one of us is an ambassador for GWRRA. Bruce Hill & Regina Smith Maryland District Directors GWRRA MARYLAND CHAPTER B WISHES TO THANK OUR 2014 FUN DAY SPONSORS!! GWRRA Maryland Chapter B will recognize the support of our sponsors by presenting each of them with a certificate and a letter of appreciation. 15 HAVING A GOOD TIME (AND THEN SOME) On 31 May 2014, the chapter had a very full day. First, we had our monthly meeting that was conducted at the end of the month instead of our regular third Saturday due to previous commitments. Our meeting went great as usual with a full room once again that included visitors from chapters I and J respectively. We had two new members join in Dennis Johnson and his lady Charley. After our meeting, we rode off to the United Methodist Car Show up in Severn Maryland. Now folks, we went there to look at the cars and we wind up in the show! We roll into this place several bikes strong. Myself, Bruce Hill, Aaron Cain, Frank Monroe, Richard Blake, Terry gardner from Chapter J and our brand new member Dennis Johnson on his first ride with the hive (I think). Ken Trass met us there with his bike also. We roll up in the joint and dismount and this guy tells me where to go to register so I do that BUT.there s something fishy goin on because after I sign the paper, the guy hands me a card with the number 19 on it and boxes for me to check that tells anyone reading the card about the make, year and model of my bike. I walk over to our fearless leader (Aaron) and ask him what s up. He ain t got a clue so after some minor investigation we discover we are IN THE SHOW NOT OBSERVING THE SHOW. We all say that s cool because none of us have anything better to do on such a fantastic day to ride anyway so we stay, eat, enjoy the sun and watch all of the awesome cars come in for the show. All-in all, there were 84 cars and 10 bikes in the show. They had categories for classic car, sports car, future classic cars, antique cars (Hampton Conway had his muscle car in the show in that category and I m sure every chapter B member voted for him). And for some strange reason (at least to me), they had a Corvette category singled out. They also had trucks and SUV s. Man, those rides were bad to the bone. Those cars were so clean and fly would have slid off and fallen to its death had it tried to land on one of the cars. Around 3:30pm the judging began and when they got to the motorcycle potion the called THIRD PLACE NUMBER 22!. Bruce Hill posed with his trophy proudly and it was well deserved. Then they called out SECOND PLACE NUMBER 23!!. And now it was Aaron Cain s turn to claim his prize and we were all proud for him and his bike. Then the announcer called out FIRST PLACE NUMBER NINETEEN!!! Now I m going up to claim first place! Man I was happy and very proud. Earlier Bruce Hill mentioned that I might have a good chance because of the color of my bike (Blue and grey with a lot of chrome). His reasoning was that out of all the bikes we rode up there, mine and Frank Monroe s were the only two that were not red. I ll tell you, red green or purple, I m still mighty proud to have that trophy (smile). We go up there to hang out and wind up sweeping the event!! Not bad I say, not bad at all.
