1 The First Church of the Brethren Roaring Spring, PA September Bloomfield St. (814) Roaring Spring, PA Fax (814) Director of Ministry: Dr. David Crumrine Living out our faith Being the hands and feet of Jesus, serving with open minds and hearts. We exist to be a community of welcome and worship where people find peace, purpose, and power through Jesus Christ. Mark your calendar for Rally Day-September 9 th! Not only will that Sunday jump us into the official beginning of an exciting new year here at First Church, we hope to use it as a celebration of all the programs and events that our members have celebrated in the last several months. That way the day can also serve to build anticipation and eagerness to be part of another great year at First Church! Christian Education classes and teachers will be celebrated as part of worship that day, and we will point forward to another year of Venture Club and worshipping with our outstanding Choir. By recognizing National Youth Conference participants, Camp Blue Diamond campers, and hearing reports on our new on-line community for young adults, Vacation Bible School, Bible Study Groups, Good Grief Support group and Men s Fellowship we will be setting the stage for another year of using our gifts and talents in spreading the love, hope and message of Jesus Christ. Following the worship service, the Men s Fellowship will be preparing hamburgers and hotdogs for a potluck meal in the Fellowship Hall. Since we are limiting their time to report on National Youth Conference during worship, the excitement brought back from NYC will spill over as youth and advisors hope to go into a deeper report following the meal. I look forward to starting this new year off with you! Pastor Dave

4 The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey Alaska, 1920: a brutal place to homestead, and especially tough for recent arrivals Jack and Mabel. Childless, they are drifting apart--he breaking under the weight of the work of the farm; she crumbling from loneliness and despair. In a moment of levity during the season's first snowfall, they build a child out of snow. The next morning the snow child is gone--but they glimpse a young, blonde-haired girl running through the trees. This little girl, who calls herself Faina, seems to be a child of the woods. She hunts with a red fox at her side, skims lightly across the snow, and somehow survives alone in the Alaskan wilderness. As Jack and Mabel struggle to understand this child who could have stepped from the pages of a fairy tale, they come to love her as their own daughter. But in this beautiful, violent place things are rarely as they appear, and what they eventually learn about Faina will transform all of them. 7 Compelling Vision Conversation Where There Is No Vision, the People Perish (Prov. 29:18a KJV) The Church of the Brethren stands at a crossroads. Recent decades have been defined by paralyzing conflict. In response to the ongoing conflict, at the 2017 Annual Conference, the delegate body affirmed a report from the Leadership Team and the Council of District Executives regarding The Authority of Annual Conference and Districts regarding the Accountability of Ministers, Congregations, and Districts. That report concluded with this assertion: To stay on the journey together, it is also crucial that the church discern the compelling vision that this body of Christ is called to pursue. Leadership, at both the denominational and district levels, has affirmed calling a team to guide the denomination through a process of conversation and discernment in an effort to arrive at a compelling Middle Pennsylvania District An introduction will be presented during the lunch time at District Conference on October 13. Two sessions have been scheduled for your participation. Join us for the conversation on Saturday, November 10 from 3-5 pm at Memorial COB in Martinsburg Sunday, November 11 from 2-4 pm at Maitland COB in Lewistown. vision rooted in our shared commitment to live as Christ s disciples. It is an invitation to place our trust in God s Spirit and engage in a visioning process to discern what God is calling us to do together with the fervent hope that our commitment to one another and to serving our God as the body of Christ might be renewed through this shared journey and a sense of shared mission. For as Eugene Peterson says in his paraphrase of Proverbs 29:18: If people can t see what God is doing, they stumble all over themselves; But when they attend to what (God) reveals, they are most blessed. Conversations began at Annual Conference this summer, will continue in districts and with various constituency groups through the fall and winter, and culminate at Annual Conference in We are committed to engaging as many people as possible in the process, providing opportunities for individuals to give voice to their passions and concerns, listen to one another, and work together to identify common threads and themes that might point to a shared and compelling vision. As we embark on this journey together, it is our prayer that: our relationships with one another will be strengthened and deepened, transcending points of disagreement; we will be able to celebrate the ongoing presence and activity of God s Spirit at work among us; we will be open to what God is calling us to do together as Christ s disciples; the vision ultimately articulated will lay claim to our hearts and our minds, our imaginations and our spirits, shaping our identity and inspiring our ministry at the congregational level, the district level, and the denominational level; and we will wholeheartedly embrace the challenge set before us by that vision, affirming contextual creativity as we actively seek to embody that vision. District Conference District Conference will be held on October 12-13, 2018 at Roaring Spring First Church of the Brethren. Janet Sell is moderator and has chosen scripture from Psalm 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. Friday night: Donita Keister, 2019 Annual Conference Moderator, will be in Middle PA to bring the Friday evening message, followed by a time of fellowship. Everyone is welcome! You don t need to be a delegate or non-delegate to attend. Saturday will begin with devotions and business items and reports will be shared by those important ministries. We encourage you to register as a delegate with your congregation or individuals can register as non-delegates. Offerings will be for Pennies for Witness and for the Puerto Rio District.
