1 Tidings from the Woodbury Church of the Brethren Helping people to know God as revealed in His fullness through Jesus Christ and responding to God and mankind in love and service. January 2019 January 13 will be a day of celebration for Woodbury Church of the Brethren as District Executive David Banaszak will be here to officially license PASTOR David Scott to ministry in the Church of the Brethren. The licensing process is more difficult than it was in the past, but David has completed the requirements, and we want to congratulate him on this accomplishment and share together in the celebration. The licensing will take place in the Morning Worship service, and there will be a carry-in meal following Sunday School. Please come and be a part of this milestone for David and this body of believers. Sunday, January 27 th We will be joined by a pastor from one of the other churches in the Southern Cove Ministerium. Who we will be speaking here on this date has not been determined yet. Dedication of Those Serving Dedication of Commission members and church officers, commissions and committees will be on January 6 th during the morning worship service. Bread & Cup Communion January 6 th All who have received Jesus as Lord and Savior and have been baptized are invited to partake in Communion, you do not need to be a member of the church. May we examine ourselves in our relationship with God and others as we prepare for communion. Parents please explain to your children that communion can only be taken by those who have received Jesus and have been baptized.
2 Drive To Bethlehem December 8th Thanks to everyone that helped to make this happen! It took a lot of hard work! January 13 at 2:30pm At the Village The Adult choir will be singing in the worship service at the Village. If you are a member of the choir, please mark your calendar. 3 Straining Toward What is Ahead Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:12-14, NIV84 It seems to me these words of Paul are tailor-made for our consideration at the start of a New Year. I m not into New Year s resolutions as such, because they never seem to last for more than a few days. But I am into looking ahead, trying to discern God s will for my life and the church, and pursuing some God-given goals. Paul has some good words for that process. The first thing that strikes me is that we can t live in the past. We can t dwell on what has already happened. We can t go back and relive fond memories. We can t beat ourselves up over past mistakes. What is done is done. If we ve done wrong and asked for forgiveness, we are forgiven. If we ve done well, we can t rest on our laurels, patting ourselves on the back for past accomplishments, either. We can however build on the past. We can recognize God s faithfulness to us throughout our lives, and move forward in greater faith for what He will do in the future. We can learn from our past failures and not repeat them in the present. The second thing that strikes me is that God has a purpose for my life, and for yours. There is a reason why He entered your life and began drawing you to Himself. He wanted you to live in relationship with Him and be a part of His eternal kingdom. He has a place for you and a role to fill in drawing others into that kingdom as well. Have you come to understand His purpose for you? Third, none of us has reached perfection (sorry to burst your bubble). None of us is all we can be in Jesus. Not one of us has accomplished all He has for us to do. There is much more of Him and His Word that we can take hold of. And there is much more we can offer in service to our Lord and Savior. Fourth, none of this comes easily. Paul talks about straining toward what is ahead, and pressing on toward the goal. It doesn t just happen because we re Christians, or because we go to church. We must work at it, and work hard, if we re going to be successful. So I encourage you to look forward with anticipation to what God has for you in I invite you to spend time in His presence, praying and studying His Word, so that you come to understand His purpose for your life, and His direction for your future. I pray that you will never let your imperfections or failures get you down, but rather that, with patience and perseverance, you will press ahead toward your God-given future goal. Have a wonderful and Christ-filled New Year. Pastor David Here s what s going on this month in our Sunday school classes. What sounds interesting to you?
