I can`t believe it - Easter is coming fast! It seems like Christmas was just yesterday- where did the time go? Lent commences on Ash Wednesday March 6 this year. There will be a Circuit service at Sanderstead Methodist chapel on Ash Wednesday at 7. 30pm. Ash Wednesday gospel reading (Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18) highlight prayer, fasting, and almsgiving as some dependable practices of lent to help us prepare for Easter season. This gives us the opportunity to examine our own lives and see whether there is potential for new growth, to see where, in our lives, new growth can be encouraged and brought to blossom, yes, pruning out "dead wood" from our old 'religious' habits but focusing on improving our discipleship and faith - being re-created and renewed for the glory of God and the expansion of His Kingdom here on earth. What will be the essence of Lent for you? What will you do to let Jesus Christ make a difference in and through you this Lent? 3 Palm Sunday 14th 10am Maunday Thursday 18th 8pm (at Sanderstead) Good Friday 19th 11am Easter Sunday 21st April: 8.30am Communion 10am all age celebration Lent Reflections: A chance to explore or deepen your own faith, based on a short film produced by the church army. Every Wednesday: 13, 20, 27 March & 3rd and 10th April at 7.45pm 9.15pm. And every Thursday: 7, 14, 21 & 28 March and 4th and 11th April, at 35 Dane Road, Warlingham. All welcome. Seeking Stillness: an opportunity for quiet reflection, led by Jane Hoskins. 16 March St Ambrose Warlingham 13 April All Saints Warlingham 11 May 2-5 St Christopher s Warlingham 4 June All Saints Warlingham 6 July St Christopher s Warlingham There are many ways to prepare, through scripture, prayer, reflection, or even fasting. Some take it as a time of questioning, seeking, exploring, or sharing what you know. Lent offers us all a chance to prepare ourselves, to more fully follow Jesus Christ and fully reflect upon what it means to be a disciple of our Saviour. In that preparation and reflection, it is my hope that we can all discover the joy and life that Christ offers. I pray that we will use the coming 40 days wisely as we journey together through lent and later join in the proclamation of the good news of the resurrection. He is not here, he has risen! "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the LORD Jeremiah 29:13 A peaceful Easter to you all. Grace and Peace Faith Send A Cow Thank you Thank you so much for all your generous support of the fundraising event on Sunday 24th February. Whether you made cakes, donated goods, came and bought or gave donations. You raised a fantastic 300! That is almost enough to pay, for example, for the training for 5 orphan children and young people to grow their own food to eat and sell. Marvellous! Rosemary 10 3
4 The Church Family Weekend Away April 2019 We would love to have you join us in the beautiful setting of the Oast Houses, Northiam, East Sussex, especially if you are relatively new to the church and / or if you have not been to a church weekend before. This will be our 8th time at the Oasts which provides a fabulous setting for fun, fellowship and a chance to get to know each other better as we draw closer to God. There is no set charge. For more information please speak to Jill Gradon or one of the Stewards. Hope to see you there. For more info Feedback to ministers and organists from 100 years ago. Some of you will know that I am currently engaged in a family project, transcribing hundreds of letters written by my great-uncle when serving in Palestine between He wrote as often as time permitted and mostly daily, to his wife and his letters make a fascinating account of life in the desert at that time. In early 1919 he is in a camp near Alexandria awaiting eventual demobilisation. He is a regular Sunday churchgoer and his mother was an organist so he felt quite able to offer his opinions, which he freely does on many occasions. The following is a short example that you may enjoy. 5 May 1919 Egypt Yesterday evening, 3 of us went into Alexandria and attended the Wesleyan Church. The minister preached for 40 minutes only!!; he has discovered that he has been overdoing it. What a wordy way these parsons do get into. Within 10 seconds last evening, he had given us one little sentence 3 times and it was quite a simple little thing too!! I think this wordiness shows that they would gain by taking an active part in the everyday work of life, where much movement of the lips tendeth to penury!! However, he was fairly interesting in places! The organist was somewhat insufficient but quite useful on hymn tunes, and the singing went with great vigour. We had one new hymn, 735 in the Methodist Hymn Book, and the tune seemed familiar. It was a sort of communion service hymn, but it went with good effect and the tune struck me as an easy one for a mixed congregation. I wonder if any of your comments to our preachers, to Andrew or Rob will last for 100 years! Rosemary 4 9

It has reached the end of its life and is unhygienic and unsuitable for food preparation. A domestic kitchen is not really robust enough and a fully commercial kitchen is unnecessary and expensive. An initial quotation suggests a semi-commercial kitchen with an anticipated cost in the region of 35 40k to include strip out, supply and fitting, electrical, plumbing, flooring etc. Further quotes will be obtained so that ideally an installation would be done during the Summer school holiday to minimise its impact on church activities and hirers use. In terms of funding the cost, there is 10k left in our building fund that can go towards it. To raise the balance of 25-30k it was also agreed that two Gift Days would be held on April 7 th and 14 th more details to follow but please put those dates in your diary.
