1 August/September 2018 A WORD FROM PASTOR NANCY Dear Friends, It s been a long, hot, humid summer, and right now we are in the dog days. Have you heard this expression? After a bit of research, I discovered that it s an old one. The term alludes to the period between early July and early September, when Sirius, the so-called Dog Star rises and sets with the sun. The ancient Romans called this phenomenon dies canciulares, which was translated as dog days in the first half of the 1500 s. In the middle of this time, August 11 coincides with the heliacal (at sunrise) rising of the Dog Star. The rising of Sirius does not actually affect the weather, but for the ancient Egyptians, Sirius appeared just before the season of the Nile's flooding, so they used the star as a "watchdog" for that event. Since its rising also coincided with a time of extreme heat, the connection with hot, sultry weather was made for all time: "Dog Days bright and clear / indicate a happy year. / But when accompanied by rain, / for better times our hopes are vain." [Chicago Tribune, 9/15/16] No matter what the weather, this season has been a busy one as we head into the program year. Plans are underway for a new season of; Sunday School, Confirmation, Hand bell choir, Mission & Outreach, and more opportunities for Fellowship. Our Shared Ministry began July 1 and it seems we are doing well with the time change for worship on Sundays and I am finding my rhythm between two congregations, councils, and offices. I sense a new energy in both churches as we navigate these new waters of change. Thank you all for helping me and your respective churches make this transition. The Joint Council [JC] has met twice and takes their role seriously as a symbol of unity and cooperation. They welcome your encouragement, ideas, and concerns. The Joint Committee members from Peace Church are Dave Sommers, Candi Koenigs, Carla Zander (chair); from First Congregational Church are Bobbie Christus (secretary), Jeff Bain, and Mary Bain. The JC planned a special day for us all: September 23 will be a Shared Celebration Sunday with ONE service at Peace in Brillion at 8:30 am. Rev. Jane Anderson, Associate Conference Minister will join us for a special Blessing of our Shared Ministry. A brunch will follow the worship service. Check out the invitation in this newsletter. Grace and Peace, Pastor Nancy HOMEBOUND VISITS I will be making pastoral visits every other month to our homebound members in each congregation. Here in Brillion I will visit in August, October, and December. So, I am asking for a team of 2 members to make visits on the remaining months of September and November. Please let me or Kathy know if you are willing to be part of a visiting team. Always, if there is a need for a pastoral visit during the 'off' months, please call or me or the church office. When you visit, please take a current bulletin and newsletter from the church. We are working on getting a devotional booklet as well. Thanks so much - Pastor Nancy AFTER-SERVICE FELLOWSHIP TIME TO BEGIN We ll begin on Sunday, September 9 th with an Ice Cream Social. In keeping with tradition, there will be a time for fellowship after Sunday Worship throughout the school year. The sign-up sheet for volunteers to host/hostess a Sunday is available in the fellowship hall. Thanks in advance!

We welcome our returning students and our new class of confirmation students for the start of the 2018/2019 year. SCRIP Since January of 2018, the Scrip program has given $ to our General Fund to help pay our operating expenses for the church. So, with your dedication of purchasing Scrip on a regular basis, we can continue this trend in helping with the paying of our general operating expenses from our Scrip profits. Thank you to all who purchase Scrip, but if you have never used Scrip, please call the church office and Kathy will explain how it works. We all need to buy groceries to feed our families and gasoline for our vehicles. What a great way to start using Scrip by purchasing gift cards to your grocery store and purchasing gift cards to your favorite gas station. Scrip may be purchased after Worship every Sunday or you may stop at church whenever Kathy Daun is in the office.

As we reconnect and move forward with existing and new projects please take the time to express your ideas with Mission and Outreach Committee members. Patrick s Patches: Our dear friends at Patches don t seem to slow down or take extended vacations during the summer months; in fact with all the donations received from local summer rummage sales they remain very busy. We continue to have two projects that we promote throughout the year for Patches Back to School Supplies and The Winter Coat Giveaway. We collect year round for both of these projects here and take them over to Patches to store until they re needed in the fall. Back to School Supplies: A special thank you for all the recent donations, as well as throughout the last year. Several trips have been made to Reedsville over the months to drop off backpacks and supplies, but on Monday we delivered the bulk of donations in time for their fall distribution. The School Supply room was set up and ready to have our gifts sorted. The volunteers will be following last year s procedure of delivering the supplies directly to the local schools instead of having the parents pick up supplies at Patrick Patches. The teachers and staff have a better understanding of those needing supplies and are able to present them directly to the children as the school year begins. Please continue bringing in school supplies throughout the year as you find them on sale. Winter Coat Giveaway: In the fall of 2017 Patches supplied over 200 people with warm winter coats (both new and gently used). Your donations were greatly appreciated and any further gifts of coats can be left at the church marked for Patches. Distribution for 2018 will begin sooner than you think so keep your eyes open for special deals on coats. Vest-A-Dog: In 2016 Peace Church presented a protective vest to Amer, Calumet County s first K- 9. Amer and his handler, Deputy Pearson have become an invaluable team for our community and the surrounding area. Due to their overwhelming scheduled/unscheduled workload, fundraising is underway for a second unit. Our church has committed to providing the second dog with a vest as well as taking part in the fundraising. Our fund for the second vest began with a donation from the family of the late Margie Christopherson, a dear friend of Pastor Kris Borns and Peace. Margie often spoke of her husband s service dog, Duke and the immense service these dogs provide. The Garden Committee will help fund this vest, which cost approximately $1,300.

6 Annual Perennial Sale and Brat Fry Follow-up: In June our spring sales information was presented on Sunday mornings during the service and also in the informational inserts, however we would like to again state how truly incredible both events were. The Brat Fry generated $ for Connections, a local treatment center for Autism. Donations for the beautiful quilt crafted by Rhonda Klessig brought in an additional $ A financial gift of $ by Endowment and a gift of $1, by Rhonda and Dave Klessig brought the grand total to $3,062.17! A special thank you for all the hard work during the sale and the generous donations towards this project. The Perennial Sale generated the second largest total in the 22 year history of this project! The grand total (before deducting the cost of our ad) was $4,497.06! Checks have been presented to the Taylor Schmidt Family Missions, Outer Limits, Peace Church towards our water bill, and Relay for Life. Additional gifts are being considered and information will be given as these take place. This project gives us the opportunity to host hundreds of people, offer a listening ear as people share their stories, and share our passion for God s gift of flowers. We thank the many people that make this sale possible, especially Jane Kopidlansky for her tireless energy, and those offering their time and talents before, during and after the sale. We are always looking for more help and even people willing to adopt and care for plants until next year s sale. Looking Ahead: Within the next few weeks I will be stepping down from the position of Chairperson with the Missions and Outreach Committee. Words cannot express the admiration I feel for the members and friends of Peace as we have traveled the world through missions and outreach projects. Your generosity and faithfulness to God s word to serve His people speaks volumes of your willing and loving hearts. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the wonderful journey we have taken together. In God s Love, Carol Lowe The Mission and Outreach Committee is always looking for people to join the team as they present mission and evangelism projects to the congregation. Please contact the office or any committee member if you would like to service on Missions or the Garden Committees. 13 August/September 2018 A WORD FROM PASTOR NANCY Dear Friends, It s been a long, hot, humid summer, and right now we are in the dog days.

14 NEWS REGARDING OUR SUNDAY SCHOOL PROGRAM The Sunday school program has returned to Sunday mornings. Children will be dismissed during the 8:30 a.m. worship, immediately after Children s Time to attend class. We are still waiting on six families to return their Sunday school registration forms. Please take a few minutes and send your information into the church office. We are having Hand Print Sunday, September 9 th immediately after worship. Janel Feldner has graciously agreed to help our new group of youth to place their hand prints on our wall. After worship, please meet Janel in the Sunday School hallway. Sunday School kick-off is September 9 th. Immediately after worship we will be having an Ice Cream Social, please see the announcement below for items needed for our Ice Cream social. Third graders will receive their Bible from Peace Church on Sunday, October 7 th during the 8:30 a.m. worship. Please mark your calendars. ICE CREAM SOCIAL SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2018 We will be kicking off our Sunday school year on September 9 th. If anyone is willing to donate any of the following items, please sign-up on the sheet located in the fellowship hall or Kathy at peaceucc1@frontier.com or leave a message on the answering machine pail of Vanilla Ice Cream 1 pail of Chocolate Ice Cream 1 jar of cherries 1 whipping cream (cans) 1 gallon chocolate milk 1 caramel syrup 1 butterscotch syrup 1 chocolate syrup or thick chocolate topping CONFIRMATION CLASSES TO BEGIN Confirmation classes will begin on Wednesday, September 12 th. Classes will be held the second Wednesday of the month as a combined group from both Peace Church and First Congregational Church. We welcome our returning students and our new class of confirmation students for the start of the 2018/2019 year. Returning students are: Rachel Fischer, Morgan Janas, Derek Vande Hey and Aubrie Williams from Peace UCC in Brillion. New students from Brillion are Jacob Fischer and Grant Leiterman. The students from First Congregational in DePere are: Gavin Howard, Joe Sampo and Mason Mattes. Our program will now consist of a one-year mentor program. Please keep all our young adults in prayer as they begin their year of studies. We have a few families who have not returned their registration forms, please do so immediately. Pastor will contact students with time and place of our monthly meetings.

18 Annual Perennial Sale and Brat Fry Follow-up: In June our spring sales information was presented on Sunday mornings during the service and also in the informational inserts, however we would like to again state how truly incredible both events were.
