1 God s purpose for Glenwood Lutheran Church is that we accept all people, share the Good News, and help those in need. The monthly newsletter of Glenwood Lutheran Church June 2017 SERVICE OF INSTALLATION Tues., June 13 7 p.m. Glenwood s sanctuary Mark your calendar to attend the service that evening as Bishop Daniel Beaudoin installs Reverend Christopher Hanley as Glenwood s pastor. A reception follows the service. On April 30 th, we were delighted to receive the following into membership: Dawn Billings Cindy Findlay Charlotte Parnell OLD WEST END FESTIVAL WEEKEND June 3 & 4 All are needed for the weekend of June 3 &4. We have a lot of activities going on: Sue Sommerfield s memorial service, the Old West End parade, F.A.B.-Fill A Bag Event, and in the parking lot, we welcome Classic Car Cruise into a classic Lutheran welcoming congregation. On Saturday, June 3, anyone who would like to march in the parade should meet in Glenwood s front parking lot around 8:30 a.m. We will leave for the parade line-up at 8:45. The parade begins at 10. The memorial service for Sue Sommerfield is at 11 a.m. on June 3 at Glenwood. The FAB Fill-a-Bag Event is from 10-4 on Saturday and noon-4 p.m. on Sunday. The event is in the gym this year. Shoppers can fill a bag with clothing and other items as we share the generosity of others. Visitors will hear about the mission outreach of The Giving Store and be invited to give of time, talent, and treasury. Help for this event is needed. The car show with classic, antique, and hot rod cars cruises in both Saturday and Sunday from 1-4 p.m. Cars will be in the front parking lot along Monroe St. and in the back lot along the fence. Enjoy the festival too! Stroll through the neighborhood as you enjoy its home tours, garage sales, the art fair, children s activities, and the arboretum. Brian & Paul invite you to stop 2040 Robinwood Avenue.
2 FROM THE PASTOR To the saints of Glenwood Lutheran Church and followers of Jesus Christ, grace to you and peace! I had been in Toledo exactly one night, when I first heard of the Old West End Festival. My Air BnB host from my very first interview with the call committee at Glenwood asked if I d heard of it. No, I said, What s the Old West End Festival? Basically the best street festival there is. Festivals like this present us with an opportunity to do something which the Bible asks from us over and over again: rejoice! This year the OWE Festival occurs at the same time as another ancient festival: the Day of Pentecost. Celebrated in Jesus day as the holiday upon which God granted the Torah or Teaching in fire at Mount Sinai, the early church remembers this day as the day upon which the fire of the Holy Spirit rested on the first disciples and empowered them to reach into communities they never would have imagined. June 3rd and 4th will be a weekend in which we have a variety of ways to practice our discipleship: caring for one another in grief, worshiping, and extending hospitality to our community. On June 3rd we will remember Sue Sommerfield who has joined the saints of light. With her family and friends we will continue the process of grieving her death, and we will give thanks for the many gifts she gave to the Glenwood community and for the promise of new life in Christ. We will also welcome the Toledoans from near and far who attend the Old West End festival by marching in this parade, by opening The Giving Store for our Fill-A-Bag event, by highlighting our space with classic cars, and by distributing water to emphasize our care for our neighbors on our corner of the Old West End. Then the next day, June 4th, we will celebrate the Festival of Pentecost, using banners that marched in the parade, hearing many languages, and receiving a telling of this famous story in which the disciples receive the Holy Spirit in the form of flame. In each of these ways, we will demonstrate the love of Christ that is in us, for each other, for those who mourn, and for those who live around us. We hope that you will join us for these celebrations and come to practice your discipleship skills with us. Yours in Jesus Christ, Pastor Chris Hanley PS: On a personal note, I want to thank this community so much for the warm welcome I continue to receive as your new pastor. I am beginning to put a life together in Toledo that really means a lot to me and you have helped me so much in starting to build this life! Thank you. I hope to have gotten the chance to meet with our whole community within the context of a small group or individually by the end of the summer. Keep on the lookout for more details about this!
