7 Mission Work Means Movies ONE PHASE OF THE WORK of an- associational missionary is to promote denominational projects. One me-. dium of promotion is the movie. The Rev. Leland Royster examines one of his many films stored in his office Waynesville Mountaineer Weldon: Roanoke News Wendell: Gold Leaf Farmer West Jefferson: Skyland Post Whiteville: News-Reporter Wilmington: Journal Williamston: Enterprise Windsor: Leciger-Advance Yadkinville: Yadkin Ripple Yanceyville: Caswell Messenger Zebulon Record By JACK HORAN If asked what a missionary does, most persons will describe a devoted man or woman who wages a war on poverty and heathenism from a small thatched church deep in the jungle of some remote, savage country. And if they were told that Haywood County has a missionary working here, most persons would probably wonder what his function is, Haywood does have a missionary, but he's here primarily to s e r v e the county's Baptist churches and their members. However, his role is not the same as a Dr. Albert Schweitzer in Africa. The missionary is the Rev. G. Leland Royster, who lives in Waynesville and is employed by the Haywood Baptist Association, He has a job that is quite different from most pastors or ministers. Royster has no church, no congregation, nor any authority over any Haywood Baptist Churches or other Baptis i"'c'!'lm'the s. Royster mainly is concerned with assisting, counseling, and teaching the churches' pastors and members who are affiliated with the association. Actually, he's sort of a Baptist ''County agent" whose job it is to help pastors with church organization, conduct study groups, or promote denominational activities. Baptist churches stress autonomy at the local level, and this practice is carried through to the state convention level. This.means that Baptists have little control over one another, and as a result, there's not a constant flow of information or ideas from one level to another. Just the suaalus uonoo pal SlUJ.Ia UOllOQ passo To get a better idea of Royster' s work, let's look at a typical week's schedule. On Sunday, he filled in for a pastor who was absent from his church. Wednesday night he visited at a local church. Two other nights he attended evening meetings and showed a movie at one meeting. He also handled the program at a pastor's conference, All week long the missionary gave morning devotionals on radio. However, most of his work is done at his office in the basement of his home at 213 Leatherwood Street. While his wife, Bernice, may be tidying up the house, Royster may be conferring with a pastor or running off a newsletter on his mimeograph machine. "I figure I spend about half my time in the office," he says. There he is surrounded by church literature, spools of movie film, books, and a busy telephone, A native of the Shelby area, Royster came to Haywood County December 1 of 1963 from the Mount Zion Association near Burlington. He was the associational missionary there, too. Royster has no direct "superior" and acts as sort of an executive secretary to the Haywood Association, His position is partially supported by the State Baptist Convention. His closest related worker on the state level is Dr, E, L. Spivey of Raleigh. Dr, Spivey is the Director of Missions, Several times a year Royster will attend a state conventio meeting, Although he doesn't act ually represent the Haywood Baptists at the meetings, he can reflect their thinking and advise the convention on local needs problems, A graduate of Furman University and the Southern Baptist Seminary, Royster is a member of the Lion's Club, the Exchange Club, and the National Grange among others, He's also a member of the General Board of the Baptist State Convention, Much of the missionary's work ISee Mlsionuy P ge 3B) (Continued From Page ii ls accomplished in his office at home. But he also finds time to utiltze the office to further his hobby, photography. About 15 feet beyond the door is a tree stump. Royster spreads bird seed on the stump and then retreats behind the office door where he has his camera set up. When the birds come to feed, the amateur photographer zooms in on them with his telephoto them on mm.
8 The Rev. Leland Royster, superintendent of missions in the Haywood Association is in charge of the music and worship at each session of the Summer Conference of the N. C. Baptist Superintendents of Missions meeting at Fruitland Baptist Conference Center in Hendersonville. The conference, led by E. J. Hines of Jacksonville, opened Monday night and will continue through this evening. Dr. Byrnes Coleman, professor of Bible at Wingate College, leads a period of Bible study each evening, giving a preview of the Book of Acts, which is the book that will be studied in Baptist churches in their 1975 January Bible study. His studies are planned to help the Superintendents of Missions prepare to teach the Book of Acts next January. Dr. Howard Ford, director of the Division of Missions of the Baptist State Convention, gave an address on the subject "The Relationship of the Church and the Association". He challenged all church leaders at all levels Iocal church, association, and convention, to lead the church as the body of Christ, into doing effectively the work that He has given us to do. During the business period Tony Brewington, Pembroke, and superintendent of missions in the Burnt Swamp Association, gave a report on the changes that are being proposed in the Constitution of the conference. Fred Lunsford, Truett Baptist Association, reported the excellent response of churches in. helping to relieve the results of the disastrous tornado that struck that area in April. Russell Bennett of the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board in Atlanta, Ga., had the principal message and training period on Tuesday morning, a workshop in associational strategy planning. The confererees were divided into small groups to work out a strategy of associational missions in a typical town and country association with a particular set of problems described in the strategy planning materials....
