(Observer photo-munpu) Minister To After Long Service By THAD MAMAU The Rev. D. H. Lowder is retiring as pastor of Massey Hill Baptis...L Church after servingthffl""for 20 years. The retirement, effective Dec. 31, was announced by the Rev. Mr. Lowder for two main reasons. First, he said, the church needs a younger man to grow with it. Then, he said, "I am stepping out while I can still adjust. The longer I would stay, the more difficult it would become to get along outside Massey Hill Baptist." However, he said, he will miss the relationship he has had with the people of the church with which he has.associated for two decades. A native of Stanly County, the Rev. Mr. Lowder came to Massey Hill after preaching in M,aysviile and Rowan County. He lhas seen Massey Hill Baptist grow in every way a church can. Membership has increased from 391to 690 during.the Rev. Mr. Lowder's.tenure. The church has also changed buildings once to house,the larger congregation. The Rev. "A minister today must be able to do much more than preach. He must also be a counselor as guidance to the young and to families in moving to the forefront." The Rev. Mr. Lowder said he never has regretted being a pastor. He said' it has been a great challenge "to be witness for God and t.o preac the Gospel." During ibis career as an ac tive minister, the Rev. Mr. Lowder has baptized 456 persons into C h r i s t 1a n membership in the church a.nd has married 127couples. He re.fleeted upon Ibis time spent at Massey Hill. He said that some of the folks he married now have children who are 16 or more years old. As for the future of Massey Hill Baptist, the Rev. Mr. Lowder said the church is in the building stage. He said he hopes more study and ttaining in church work will become commonplace. Plans for his own future inelude preaching in other churches on an interim or supply basis. August 10, 1935, Reverend Frank W. Gaddy was called to serve as pastor at Calvary for half-time. Reverend Eli F. Eagle was called after Gaddy 's resignation to serve approximately one year. Reverend Delma H Lgwdet, was born October 2, 1903, a native of Stanley County, near Albemarle, N. C. His parents were Thomas B. Lowder and Anna Parker. He received his early education in Stanley County Schools and was graduated from.boyden High School and Catawba College, Salisbury, N. C. He was married to Zula Watson, and they had one daughter. He was ordained into the ministry at Rowan Mills Baptist Church. Lowder was called to serve as pastor of Calvary November 14, 1937, to July 2, The Baptist Training Union was organized while he was pastor. The first written record of a Vacation Bible School was in 1941 with eighty-seven in attendance. During Lowder's career as an active minister, he baptized 456 persons into Christian membership in the church and married 127 couples. He was a strong supporter of our World Mission Pro~. (See Assoc. Missions information.) Lowder died August 30, Mrs. Louise Stukenbroke reorganized WMS November 8, 1942, and it has steadily strengthened ever since up until the publication date of this book. February 21, 1943, the deacons made a recommendation to the church to purchase a heating plant. A motion was made and carried to raise money before any contract was signed. The money was to be raised by May 15, It was decided to purchase the heating plant for approximately $1,300, plus other work such as vents, etc. Lowder's salary was $90 per month as of April During this time the inside of the church was painted at a cost of $48. The old wooden window frames were remodeled to provide better ventilation in the church. A piano was purchased. During early summer the revival was postponed because of a ban on church attendance for children because of a polio epidemic. On July 2, 1944, the resignation of Lowder was read to the congregation. In August 1944, a pulpit committee was elected to search for another pastor. The next pastor at Calvary was the Reverend Robert Lee Deweese. He was born September 20, 1884, in Democrat, Madison County. He was the son of J. M. Deweese and Elizabeth Deweese. He attended 9
