C Headed- Continued from Page 1A His office was a 10-foot by 20-foot room in the parsonage in Stewart Park, and his wife was the unpaid janitor and part-time secretary for six years. They had more baptisms that year than last to 521 but in every other way the association flowered under his direction. In '74, there was $4,000 towards a building. By '79 the building was completed, furnished and paid for at a cost of $115,000 - from donations by the 64 chutches and their members. Receipts that first year totaled $2,076,262. Last year they were $5,256,373. Mission gifts have grown by about 250 percent, program gifts by over 200 percent and associated missions by almost 300 percent. "There are similar associations in 79 of the 100 counties in the state," Marks said. "In addition, we are all members of the Baptist State Convention and the Southern Baptist Convention. We are known for our mission work all over the world. We have 3,500 people in home missions and another 3,500 are missionaries overseas. All of them are supported with voluntary gifts from individual members and from the churches. No church is assessed." As director, Marks correlates the work of five basic organizations Sunday School, Church Training, Mu, sic, Women's Missionary Union and " the Brotherhood. The director of each organization works part-time. Besides Marks, the only full-time person at the center is the secretary/clerk, Mrs. Logan Tucker. "The Baptists are almost unique, in that the members of each church decide who the minister will be," Marks explained. "A search committee invites ministers to come and preach and the members decide whom they will hire. "A search committee is looking for my Successor. But I don't feel he will have any problems coming in here. All Of.the programs are on-going, so th~.re, IS nothing left hanging undone. Ther~ has been a fine spirit of cooperatron and unity here, for the most part, from pa~tors- and individual members. If it were not for their 'support, the association would not have prospered," Marks said. Last Sunday, members of the association hosted a reception for Marks and his wife. "All of the family except one grandson (there are five) made it," Marks said, smiling.

4 ELLIS L. MARKS In May, a call was extended to the Reverend Ellis L. Marks. Mr. Marks began his work with Piney Forest Church October 4, Reverend Marks is a native of Rockingham, North Carolina. His home church is the McDonald Baptist Church of rockingham. He graduated from Rockingham High School and attended Wingate College and Southeastern Seminary. His ordination took place at the McDonald Baptist Church on October 31, His pastorates include eight churches in North. Carolina and South Carolina covering a period of 21 years. He is currently serving Pleasant Plain Church in Kershaw, South Carolina. The church pastorium was dedicated during his pastorate, and Reverend Marks and his family were the first family to make their home in the Pastorium.
