2 GASTON BAPTIST ASSOCIATION 1995 MINUTES IN MEMORY OF WALTER FLAY PAYNE Rev. Payne accepted Christ as personal Saviour in December, Payne accepted the call to Ministry in 1950 and ordained in He organized a mission church, Faith Baptist, sponsored by Second Baptist, Kings Mountain. Payne attended Gardner-Webb and Limestone Colleges and graduated from Southeastern Seminary in He pastored in Blue Ridge Association until 1968, beginning in During this time the church experienced growth in unity; in conversions and baptisms. In 1968 he accepted the call to Fairview Baptist Church in Gastonia and pastored there until His commitment was to evangelism, prayer, and shepherding his "flock". Rev. Payne became a certified instructor for "Evangelism Explosion" and taught this course at Fairview and other churches. Flay's commitment to sharing the Gospel took him into the community, participating in several crusades and Kenya with missionaries. Five young men accepted the call to go into full-time ministry from Fairview Church. Payne retired his Bibles and New Testaments after becoming so worn they were no longer usable and as he wrote, "Retired, after being used to help and bless many for our Lord - salvation, comfort, counsel, strength, guidance and in eve,y way." (3/19/72) Payne was characterized by the phrase, "prayer warrior". He prayed daily for church members and special needs and concerns he had marked in his alphabetized prayer book. Payne was known for his pastoral care. He emanated a caring and sincere spirit. Many comments have been shared about his qualities, a faithful servant, a shepherd, preacher, teacher, listener, friend, and a person who made the poorest and weakest of man feel as important and strong as the wealthiest and mighty. Dr. John C. McGill, a family friend, stated simply, "We lost a good one, didn't we". He is survived by his wife, Sue B. Payne; daughter, Wanda P. Briggs and family; and son, Walter F. Cain has pastored the following churches: Mt. He also taught at Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute. Since retirement he has served the following churches as Interim Pastor: Faith, Bessemer City; Nebo, Bethel, East Marion in the Blue Ridge Association; Silver Chapel, Pleasant Ridge, Mt. He was educated at Gardner-Webb and Limestone Colleges and Southeastern Seminary. He has served as pastor at Faith Church of Kings Mountain, Glenwood of McDowell County and Fairview of Gastonia, his current pastorate.
