1 64 A History of the Li.berty Baptist Association. ELDER PETER OWEN. Of his early life and ancestry nothing is known. That he was brought up in the vicinity of Liberty church is almost certain, as several bearing his name were members of the. church there with him. Mr. Owen seems to have been quite prominent in the work in the early years of the Liberty Association. There is no record as to when he made a profession and joined the church. The first account we have of him was when he represented Liberty church in the Abbott's Creek Union Association, held with Jersey Settlement church- in Next, he is a messenger to the same body held with Mount Tabor church, Randolph County, Mr. Owen stood with those who favored missions. Those in favor of missions, Sunday schools, etc., were in the minority and were ruled out of the Association. These went out into a tent and organized the Liberty Association, and Peter Owen, together with Joshua Lee and Philip Copple, were messengers from Liberty church, and Mr. Owen was made clerk of the newly formed body, which office he held till ten years. The first account given of his call to the ministry is the notice of licensure in A little later on the church invited a presbytery, consisting of Elders Josiah Wiseman and Jesse Sowell, looking to his ordination. After examination they, on Sunday, December 20, 1835, solemnly set him -apart to the work of an evangelist. Judging from the imperfect records, he was probably pastor of Liberty church some three years, and one year at Marion church before going west. These seem to be the only pastorates of Mr. Owen while in this State. He had some trouble which called for investigation in regard to his Christian life, and from which he was partially exonerated, but which most probably caused him to go to Tennessee, where it is said that he went. Also, all the Owens were "dismissed," and probably all went together. 1 thr ~ Ar ;..-ut ouc a l h it qtii' ;~!!~! i-:: 6
2 MINUTES OF THE 36.._) ~.-1 u,,t~ j3 ~ -I the association. He was born June 23, 1816, joined Jersey Church in 1834 and was ordained in He served as a pastor in the associaticn for 45 years. His ministry was a crowded one, many churches wanted him, but his time was always taken up. He had rare gi!ts as a preacher. His pastorates were long above the average in length, Often he would melt an entire audience to tears with a timely lllustration, hold them spellbound and move them with his pathos as rarely ever seen. During the last nine years of his life he was so afflicted that he had to sit on a high stool and deliver his messages, but this did not detract from their effectiveness. He often said he wanted to die in the harness. His wish was granted. On April 6, 1889, he had preached at New Friendship, where he had been pastor!or 33 years, on the way home he fell into the arms of his wife and went to be with Christ, whom he had preached!or 45 years. "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord." / PETER OWEN-Was the first clerk of the association; he served as such for 10 years; h~ lived in the Liberty section. He was at Mt. Tabor when the association was organized. He served the Liberty Church as pastor for several years, was also pastor at the Old Marion Church which has been extinct for many years. He and his family moved West in BENJAMIN LANIERr-Was born in this county July 26, 1807, was. an ordained minister for more than 60 years. He served many churches in this and adjoining counties, two in Btanly County for over 20 years, Tom's Creek his home church for over 30 years. He helped to organize the association. It was under h~s ministry that the late Henry Sheets was converted. He was Moderator of the association for 17 years, died August at the age of 87. HENRY SHEETS-The ministry o! this widely loved and known man began soon after the Civil War. For over 50 years he preached' on the field of the Liberty Association, where he spent his entire life. Besides his service in his home association, which in some way, tr not as pastor, reached every church in it during his day, he served churches in the surrounding counties of Davidson, Cleveland, Rowan, Stanley, Montgomery, Randolph, Guilford and Forsyth. The Liberty Association is indebted to him in a greater way than to any other man, who ever labored in its bounds. Besides his faithful services as pastor of churches in the association over a period of 50 years, he served as clerk of the association for 36 years and was Moderator for five years. But his greatest single piece of work was his writing a history of the Liberty Association. He spent much time and labor in gathering the material. Sheets' History of the Liberty Association author. was published in 1906, eleven years before the death of its nation in the as September 30, 19 days before his d The words or largely quotatio Other minist nistorv and who liam Dowd, Eli just as fruitful history characte to go into their During its clerks. Also, all the Owens cent together. A Hi.story of the Liberty Baptist Association. 65 The last account we have of Peter Owen was that he attended the Pee Dee Association in October, 1841, and likely went west in the spring of ELDER JESSE So WELL. No information is at hand in regard to Elder Sowell's early life and conversion. It is probable that he was born as far back as the year He was a Moore County man and was sent out as a minister by Friendship church in that county. It is quite likely that he came up this way through the influence of Elders Wm. Dowd and Eli Phillips, who were both members of that church. His only pastorate within the bounds of what is now the Liberty Association was at Tom's Creek church. It was a little prior to and at the time of the split that be served this church. And he traveled all the way from Moore County to do this work. He was one of a presbytery of three who assisted in the constitution of Liberty church in The majority of Tom's Creek church, of which he was pastor, opposed the work of missions, the Baptist State Convention and other "institutions of the day." In the upheaval which rent the Abbott's Union Association asunder, Mr. Sowell says that he was disowned by the majority of the church because he gave one dollar to missions and attended the Baptist State Convention. There is no record of his life and work after the split. He must have removed west, as many others did. ELDER WILLIAM BURCH. Nothing. is known of Elder Burch till manhood, when we find him a member of Jamestown church. He was ordained to the work of the ministry by bis church September 13, It is not known whether he served any church or churches as pastor. But being somewhat prominent in his church and taking such a decided stand against those who opposed the work of missions, this notice seems due him. 5

5 HISTORY OF LITTLE RIVER BAPTIST CHURCH, ( /H62) PETER OWEN 1850 According to the minutes of the Salem United Baptist Association, P. Owen was pastor of Little River in (James Blythe was reported as pastor in the Union Association Minutes in 1850.) H.W. Patterson, who had been pastor in 1843 and 1349 (James Blythe listed in the Union Association Minutes as Little River's pastor in 1949) and served again in 1859, preached at the session and was the association's representative to the Western Baptist Convention. Peter Owen was active in the Salem Association. In 1845 he and Robert Jordan were two members of the arrangement committee. Peter Owen, James Blythe, and Jeremiah Osborne were appointed to write corresponding letters to the other associations. That year Peter Owen, pastor of Cane Creek Church at Fairview in Buncombe County, preached and was appointed to prepare the circular letter for the next association, at which he was appointed to the committee on Sabbath Schools. In 1847 Peter Owen preached the introductory sermon and served with H.W. Patterson and James Blythe on the committee to make arrangements; (both Blythe and Patterson preached during the associational meeting ). In 1848 and 1849 P. Owen was moderator of the association. In 1849 Elders Owen and Patterson served on the "committee to arrange business;" P. Owen was appointed as a messenger from the Salem Association to both the Green River and French Broad Associations. A Peter Owen had been the first clerk of the Liberty Baptist Association and served in that capacity for ten years. JAMES HAMLIN DUCKWORTH 1861, 1867, 1872, 1888 James Hamlin Duckworth was born October 13, His father was John McCamy (McCammey) Duckworth, who was born in 1797 and died March 2, 1887, and his mother was Sarah Hamlin Duckworth, born in He was ordained to the ministry by Cathey's Creek Baptist Church. When Transylvania County was formed in 1861, two of the Justices of the Peace were James H. and William Duckworth. James Duckworth was Clerk of Superior Court in Transylvania County ( ) and Postmaster in Brevard ( ). J.H. Duckworth was pastor at Little River in 1861, 1867, 1872, and J. Ammons was pastor in 1862; J.B. Marsh in 1863; Asa Beck in 1875, 1882, and 1886; and D.B. Nelson in 1887.
