3 First pastor The Rev. William Myers, grandfather of Mrs. Tuttle Allen of Hamptonville, who supplied this picture, was the first pastor' of the First Baptist Church of Elkin back before the turn of the century. He was also pastor at Brier. Creek, Pleasant Grove and several other churches in the Tri-County Area. 4 WILLIAM A. MYERS William Almon Myers was born July 15, 1833 in Surry County, North Carolina, the son of Shadrick Myers and Hessie Windsor Myers. He professed faith in Christ when he was about 22 years old, and joined Zion Baptist Church, remaining a member there until his death. On September 30, 1856, he married Lemyrah Jennings, and they were the parents of four sons and seven daughters. Mr. Myers died June 24, 1912, in his 79th year. In 1867, W. A. Myers asked for and received permission from the church to preach. It was not until a year later that a presbytery consisting of Elders Thomas Howell, W. G. Brown and R. H. Parks met to examine the qualifications of Mr. Myers for the ministry, and after due examination, they found him orthodox and proceeded with the ordination. Mr. Myers was the first pastor at First Baptist Church in Elkin, and he served churches in the Brier Creek Association, and in Alexander, Iredell, Surry, Yadkin and Wilkes Counties also. 5 ELDER W. A. MYERS died June 24, 1912, in his 79th year. At the age of about 22, he professed faith in Christ and joined the Baptist Church at Zion and remained a member of the same till death. In 1868, he was ordained to the ministry, in which service he labored faithfully until called to his reward. In 1884, he was elected Moderator of the Brier Creek Association and served twelve successive years. As a presiding officer, he was surpassed by none. His zeal and energy were always inspiring to the work. "Uncle Billie", as he was pleased to be called, was a successful pastor, having served many churches of the Brier Creek and adjoining Associations. As Paul was to Timothy, so was he to the young preachers of his day, his admonition was, "Be faithful." In his last years he was much devoted to children, often making special addresses to them and by his kind words won their affections. His last text was, "It is finished." John 19:30. His wife and four children preceeded him to the better world. He leaves one son and six daughters to mourn their loss. The bereaved have our heart felt sympathies. 6 Brother William A. Myers, known throughout the section in which he lived as "Uncle Billie," died on June the 26th, At the time of his death he was eighty years old, and for more than fifty years he was a faithful Baptist preacher. Although deprived of a college education, he possessed a great fund of information, and no man in his section was better versed in the Scriptures. He is said to have been instrumental in the conversion of thousands, and many were baptized by him. Such men as he have made a large contribution to the progress of our denomination, and it will be a sad day for us when we have no place for that class of preachers. N. C. BAPTIST STATE CONY. Brother Myres, though deprived of an education, by his indomitable energy and zeal for his Master, has large influence over the churches, and has succeeded in erecting new and comfortable church edifices wherever he is called as pastor.
