1 Lighthouse Presbyterian Church To grow in Christ, becoming like Him. May 12, 2016 Volume 10, Issue 10 Lighthouse Presbyterian Church PO Box E. 303rd Street Paola, KS Worship: Sunday 10:00am Congratulations to the 2016 Graduates Aubry Adams: I like the community feeling and how close and helpful everyone has been. My plans are to attend Kansas State University in the fall and major in feed science. Sarah Bishop: After High School I will be moving to Texas to begin working, school and pursuing Border Patrol. One way that Lighthouse has impacted me is through the great people involved in the church. I am more confident today because of Pastor Kirk, who showed me a poem that I still read to this day to help my anxiety. Rachel Beth has been very supportive with the many life experiences throughout the years. Also, the many smiles I see on the faces of the congregation have made me the Christian I am today. PJ Capettini: I plan to attend Lindenwood University and participate in the B.F.A. acting program on an academic and theatre scholarship. Lighthouse has impacted my life by giving me a family who I know will always be there for me. Through the ups and downs of life, I know I can always come back to my brothers and sisters. Cybil Drummond: I plan to study at Johnson County next year. I'm not 100% sure what I want to do, so I'm going to figure that out. A way Lighthouse has impacted me is just being a part of the youth group has influenced my faith and helped me grow. Sammie Dyer: I plan to attend the University of Kansas and double major in Special Education and Applied Behavioral Science with a specialty in Early Childhood Autism Intervention. I hope to become a special education teacher or a behavior analyst. Lighthouse Church has provided me with a foundation to strengthen my relationship with the Lord through worship, the study of His word, community outreach, and missionary work.

2 THE LIGHTHOUSE BEACON Page 2 Colton Essex: I plan on majoring in Biochemistry at Olivet Nazarene University as a Pre-Medicine Pathway. Lighthouse was where I got connected with the youth in my community. I have been impacted by it in numerous ways, but the most important would have to be the connections I made with fellow believers people I could go to for anything, and for that I am grateful. Haley McDougal: After I graduate from High School, I'm going to Johnson County Community College to finish my pre-requisites. Then after that I plan on applying at several local universities to their Nursing programs and obtaining my BSN. Lighthouse has impacted my life ever since my first youth group experience and has changed my life forever. I'm thankful for being able to have a Christian environment that makes me feel loved. In today's society, it is hard to express my beliefs in the Lord without being ridiculed, but Lighthouse has prepared me for overcoming this with the Lord and fellow believers. Haley Mills: I plan on going to JCCC for 2 years to get my general education and then transfer to Pitt and go into psychology or teaching. The church has impacted me because it's given me another family. Even when I felt like I had nobody, the church welcomed me with open arms and helped me get on my path with God again. Emma Phipps: I will attend Johnson County Community College and transfer to a undecided nursing program to attain my bachelors in nursing, specializing in geriatric nursing. Growing up in lighthouse, I was constantly taught how important a faith rooted in an understanding of our total dependency and trust we need to have in God. Lighthouse not only taught me the basic knowledge of the Christian faith, but also the importance of bringing God into every aspect of my life. Bree Prothe: My future plans are to go to Pittsburg State for Elementary Education. Lighthouse has impacted me with all of the friendships I have made and the people I have got to know. Lindsay Rausch: I plan to finish up basic training in the fall and then start second semester at MNU majoring in Organizational Leadership while on a cheer scholarship. Lighthouse laid the foundation of my faith. I discovered a relationship with Christ and a community that encouraged me in my walk. I can honestly say that my life has been changed by the experience and the relationships I have at Lighthouse. I am a "..new creation. The old has passed away; the new has come" -2 Corinthians 5:17

3 THE LIGHTHOUSE BEACON Page 3 Rachel Reynolds: One way Lighthouse has impacted my life is by showing me the importance of fellowship and by strengthening my relationship with God. Lighthouse was the first church that challenged me to be a better Christian and enabled me with the tools to do so. Without Lighthouse, my walk with the Lord would not be where it is today. My future plans are to attend Johnson County Community College, while being a member of their debate program. Upon leaving JCCC, I will transfer to Emporia State University with a major in Elementary Education and a minor in sign language. Derek Robison: I plan to attend Pittsburg State University in the fall and major in electrical technology. Being a member of Lighthouse has given me another family, one that has been there for me during both good and tough times. I have felt so welcomed here. Being baptized with my brothers by Pastor Kirk and Pastor Brad is my most special memory. Megan Stover: After I graduate, I plan on attending Baker University to major in Graphic Design or English (or maybe both). While there, I will participate in band and hopefully be in a sorority. Lighthouse Church helped me grow a lot when I was younger. It gave me a place to go, people to talk to, and taught me a lot about God s love. Without the knowledge that the people at Lighthouse Church gave me, I would not be the woman I am today. Hunter Thomas: I plan to attend either Johnson or Neosho County Community College to begin a degree in finance and then transfer to a University after two years. Lighthouse Church has shown me how to have a personal relationship with God, and how to share His love with others. These are things that will better equip me to do God's work. I can truly thank the entire congregation for this. Allison Tiedemann: I am attending Pitt State University in the fall. I will be studying nursing. The church has helped me so much in my growth for God, and a better understanding in what Christianity means to me. Lexi Weidman: My future plans are to attend Baker University to be on their Dance Team. Lighthouse has impacted my life by always being a happy, accepting place to ask questions and continue to grow in Christ.

5 THE LIGHTHOUSE BEACON Page 5 CELEBRATE RECOVERY Sabbatical for Pastor Kirk Celebrate Recovery is a support ministry for anyone who has hurts, habits and hang-ups and would like instruction, direction, fellowship and encouragement to overcome them through the power of Christ. Celebrate Recovery meets every Thursday evening: 6:30-8:30 pm in the worship area with a fellowship time beginning at 6:00 pm. Child care is provided. For more information, contact Bob Zoller at robertzoller@kw.com or A sabbatical is a concept that traces its roots to Genesis. God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh. In the church, pastors are encouraged to take a sabbatical every seven years in order to rest, pursue professional development goals, reflect on visions for ministry and to renew their walk with Christ. Kirk Johnston has never taken a sabbatical. Although he has been offered and encouraged to take one multiple times during his 24 years as our pastor, he never felt the timing was right. He led us through a difficult move out of one denomination and into another, from a congregation with no assets to a congregation who four years later has a beautiful new building and will soon begin construction of The Harbor. This year, when approached about taking a sabbatical, he agreed. The timing is right. Pastor Kirk Johnston will begin a sabbatical leave on Monday, June 13 th and return on Tuesday, September 6 th. During his absence Executive Pastor Brad Buescher will assume responsibilities of Sunday worship services with the assistance of Assistant Pastor T.J. Rose. Enjoy your Sabbatical Kirk. You have earned it! Carole Moore Clerk of Session PACA Food Bank: Help Needed! The U.S. Postal Service Food Drive is this Saturday, May 14th. We will be needing additional helpers in the Paola PACA Food Bank that day -- especially to place the food items on the shelves. The PACA Food Bank is located at the First Presbyterian Church, 110 E. Peoria; enter north door by alley in back. The next Beacon newsletter will be published on Thursday, May 26th. Deadline for all articles will be Friday, May 20th. Thank you in advance for your help. The USPS truck will be dropping off food at various times -- help is needed this Saturday from 12:30-6:00 pm. You may come and help for 30 minutes or whatever time period fits your schedule. Thank you! Children s Church Teachers and Teacher Assistants are needed for the summer months during the worship service. If you are able to help one Sunday a month, please contact Tricia Sinclair at tricia@paolalighthouse.com or at
