1 THE 916 BULLETIN Monthly Newsletter of the BENEVOLENT & PROTECTIVE ORDER OF ELKS Lodge #916 Vol. 8, No North Avenue Burlington, VT (802) The Exalted Ruler s Message I personally feel very honored to be given the confidence and trust of the membership in allowing me the opportunity to be Exalted Ruler for I feel very confident that the teams elected to office (Trustees and Lodge Officers) will work diligently and in harmony to propel Burlington Lodge 916 to even greater success in the 2008/09 Lodge year. I would also like to thank in advance all of my Committee Chairpeople for taking on the challenge of helping me to run the programs that they are assigned. The Lodge has become my second home and my Lodge brothers and sisters are my extended family. As in all families, everyone does not agree on every issue, but with conversation and compromise we can all work together to keep Burlington Lodge # 916 the best lodge in the state. Please feel free to come to me with any ideas that can help the Lodge. In person, to BPOE916ER@comcast.net or call my cell at On behalf of all Officers and myself, I would ask that more members become involved in Lodge business and in fulfilling the goals of Elkdom. Please give of your time in some fashion or manner. On page 3 is a list of who is heading each of the 2008/09 Committees. Feel free to contact any one of them if you can help out or have suggestions. We are looking forward to the April 18th Blood Drive and to your continued support. Thanks Dave Ploesser for all you do to make our event a success! 4 Project Approved! After numerous meetings with Burlington city officials and the Burlington Planning Committee, our Lodge has been given the goahead on our $2.7 million dollar expansion project. Construction is expected to start no later than April 21st on the addition of the banquet room to more than double its size to accommodate functions of up to 500 people. State of the art audio/visual equipment will enhance corporate meetings as we have contracted to be the off-site meeting facility for IBM and GE Healthcare. The long awaited health and fitness facility for our members will be constructed where the back lawn area is currently located. Inside this 2-story structure will be a 30x60 ft. pool, 2 therapeutic Jacuzzi tubs, exercise room and day spa. A model of what this will look like is on display in the Bob Carr room. In addition, S.D. Ireland has agreed to work with us to improve the beach area. After the road is widened and rebuilt, sand will be brought in and the entire area will be expanded to include changing rooms, and a picnic area right on the water. Trustee Chairman Chris Bissonette says the best news is that this project will only increase our dues by a total of $ for each member. Thanks to the hard work and vision of the Officers and Trustees, we will have a facility that will meet the needs of our members for years to come! And by the way... Happy April Fool s Day! New Members BITS & PIECES Let s start before the cruise. ER wanted to look her best so she got a pedicure then went home & dyed her hair. After putting the goo on her head, she sat in her recliner to wait the twenty minutes to wash it out. She fell asleep. When she awakened many hours later her hair was a very, very bright red. She called a hairdresser (Michelle) and declared a HAIR EMERGENCY! Michelle had to go to Diane s house at 6:00 a.m. because Diane wouldn t even leave the house. You ve got some splainin to do Lucy! Oddly, Diane reported that she did not like the pedicure. She reports she has very ticklish feet, and just didn t like it. When we got home my wife said I didn t want to say anything in front of Diane, but I think she s crazy. I think a pedicure is better than sex! I know that this is just an expression, but I now keep an emery board on the nightstand just in case. A man robs a bank. Before he leaves he takes the customers hostage. He asks the first man, Did you see me rob that bank?, to which the man replies yes. The bank robber shoots him right between the eyes and the man drops dead. The bank robber then turned to the next hostage and repeated the question, Did you see me rob that bank? The man quickly responded NO, I didn't...but my wife did! Speaking of wives, my Mother in law & and her boy toy, Chris B. are making wedding plans. The have set the date for the night of the Pig Roast. He thinks Kerry will have a hard time calling him Daddy. No word yet on where the blissful couple will spend their honeymoon, or whether or not the nurse will be invited along. First reports are in on the cruise. Diane fell down on the first morning playing miniature golf. She broke a rib. Way to go Lucy! Cookie is now known as the Dirty Banana Lady, I can only imagine why. Garret was flying home, but had a layover in Philly. He asked his wife if she wanted to get dinner. He was in the restaurant so long, he missed his connecting flight to Burlington! Next flight home was the next morning, so he had to get a room for the night. Front Row (l-r): Carol Learned, Tammy Freeman, Mary Blankemeyer, Sue Thompson, Judith McGivney. Middle Row (l-r): Derek Devine, Gail Mattison, Mirsada Mujkanovic, Suzanne Shepard, Michaela Maestas. Standing (l-r): Ernest Thompson, Jr., Bill Gagnon, Robert Hollinger, Kevin Barcomb. It has been reported that barmaid Kari Lopes is so slow it takes her an hour and a half to watch 60 minutes! John Plunkett FoleyRealEstate@Comcast.net 4

5 As Elks, we have a commitment to support those community services which help with the daily needs of our seniors and others who depend upon volunteers from organizations such as church groups to provide such support. We have a strong club!! BURLINGTON MEALS ON WHEELS is in dire need of delivery people to help with their mission to provide at least one meal a day to some members of our community who, otherwise, would have some difficulty in obtaining a reasonable meal. I am appealing to those of you who are willing to give a hour or two of your time, once or twice a month, to assist with this project. It is a rewarding experience, and a welcome one by those with whom you come in contact. Please, let us support this venture. We have members who have been doing this for over 10 years. Some of them, such as Dan Ryan, do it 4-5 times a month. Won t you do it at least once? Please contact PETER CARMOLI, Director Burlington Meals on Wheels, at Mary Sweeney, Community Activities Chairperson Friday - May 2nd 6pm-???
