2 2 SAFETY TIPS FOR THE SUMMER HEAT As temperatures rise this summer, Dr. William P. Bozeman, an associate professor of emergency medicine and emergency services director at Wake Forest University, shared some tips that will help you keep cool, recognize the signs of heat overexposure and the steps to take if you experience those symptoms or see them in someone else. Amazingly, the human race survived for several million years prior to the advent of air conditioning, Dr. Bozeman said. He cautions that it is important to be aware of the temperature. Temperatures in the 90s and higher are dangerous, and become more dangerous the higher they go and the longer they last. The very young and the very old are at the highest risk, as their weight and age can impair their ability to handle high temperatures. Tips for Staying Cool This Summer n Be aware of the heat. Pay attention to it and modify your activities appropriately. n Pay attention to your hydration status, and be sure to drink plenty of fluids. n Try to stay in relatively cool areas, even when outside. Many public places such as libraries, shopping malls and movie theatres are air conditioned. n Avoid hot enclosed places, such as cars. Never leave children unattended in a car parked in the sun. n Use a fan, if available. n Stay on the lowest floor of your building. n Eat well-balanced, light and regular meals. Photo Credit: Binta Phillips n Wear loose-fitting, lightweight and lightcolored clothing. n Cover windows that receive a significant amount of sun with drapes or shades to help keep your house cool. n Weatherstripping and proper insulation will keep cool air inside your home. n Cool beverages are good for cooling down the body, while alcoholic drinks can impair the body s ability to regulate its temperature. 8 Signs of Heat Overexposure n Heavy sweating. But if heat stroke sets in, the body can no longer compensate and stops sweating n Pale skin n Muscle cramps n Feeling tired and weak n Altered mental status (confusion or disorientation) n Headache n Becoming semi-conscious, or passing out n Nausea or vomiting 6 First Steps to take After Recognizing Heat-Induced Illness n Call 911. n Get the person out of the sun and into a cool area. An air-conditioned area is ideal, but moving someone into the shade will also help. n Apply water to help the person cool off. n Apply ice to the neck or armpits, where large blood vessels are close to the surface. n Remove any heavy clothing n Immerse the body in cool water, either at a swimming pool or in a bathtub.

4 4 Sad but True Unfortunately many homes, yes, even so-called Christian homes, are like the one in which the little girl pointed to the Bible on the mantle that was never opened, and said to her mother, Whose book is that? Her mother quite startled by her daughter s question replied, Why honey, don t you know? That is God s book! The child demonstrating that she had a very practical turn to her mind said, Don t you think that we had better give it back to him? No one around here ever reads it. 5 JULY TEACHING AIDS: WE SHOULD ALWAYS BE GROWING IN CHRIST Hidden Books of the Bible The names of 17 books of the Bible, from both the Old and New Testaments, are hidden inside bigger words or are spread across more than one word. Sometimes the name is even used as a normal word in the story. Here s an example of a hidden word: The light it used was excessive. (Titus) Now try to find the names of 17 books of the Bible in the fictional story below. See Hidden Books Solution on page 8. A Trip to the Farmer s Market It could have only been a fluke that led us to the market yesterday. We arrived just in time to see our favorite comic. Ahhh! What a treat. We learned that the comic had just signed several new contracts to perform in our area. We also enjoyed the banjo elements of a blue grass band. And, wearrived just in time for a huge rainstorm! Working quickly, my mom chose a lovely melon and some delicious low-sugar jam, estimated to have just 5 calories per serving. (If you want to know the truth, I seriously doubt that claim!) When we asked one vendor why her tomatoes were so large, she explained how she could format the watering system to run only, and always, when needed. What a great way to do the job! With the rain now coming down in sheets, her plants would need no watering today. We noticed a mostly-empty stall where someone could probably make a lot of money. In fact, we started crunching some numbers, wondering if we might be able to sell our garden produce there in the future. After a short while, we took a break under a roof. My elderly mom needed to rest her feet. Then I realized I was exhausted, too. (It s not in the genes, is it?) Meanwhile, my big brother tried to be a hero. Man, someone should tell him to be more careful when he runs into the street to fetch a little kid s soccer ball! He should more accurately judge speeds of oncoming traffic, especially in the rain! As we were leaving, we again discussed the empty market stall and talked about trying to sell our extra beans and corn there. After performing some careful calculations, my big brother said, Nah, umbrellas are the way to go. Lots of people sell vegetables, but no one is selling umbrellas! Today that would have been a great item to sell. Five Fingers of Prayer 1. Your thumb is nearest to you. Begin your prayers by praying for those closest to you. They are the easiest to remember. To pray for our loved ones is a sweet duty. 2. The next finger is the pointing finger. Pray for those who teach, instruct, and heal. This includes teachers, doctors, ministers, and our elders. They need wisdom in pointing others in the right direction. Keep them in your prayers. 3. The next finger is the tallest finger. It reminds us of our secular leaders. Pray for our president and congress, leaders in business and industry, and administrators. These people shape our nation and guide public opinion. 4. The fourth finger is our ring finger. Surprising to many is the fact that this is our weakest finger; as any piano teacher will explain, it should remind us to pray for those who are weak, in trouble, or in pain. They need your prayers day and night. You cannot pray too much for them. 5. Last comes the little finger; the smallest finger of all. This is where we should place ourselves in relation to God and others. As the Bible says, The least shall be the greatest among you. Your pinkie should remind you to pray for yourself. By the time you have prayed for the other four groups, your own needs will be put into proper perspective and you will be able to pray for yourself more effectively. Should you find it hard to get to sleep tonight, just remember the homeless family who has no bed to lie in.

7 JULY New! THE RECIPE CORNER Okay, it is summer time and the living is easy!!! So here is a very easy side dish which can be prepared and cooked on the grill or in the oven, as I did! Either way, it is a delicious side accompanied with steak, fish, hamburgers and hot dogs, whatever you have the taste for, this will complete it! So instead of potato salad [even though it s one of my favorite summer time dishes], try this for a healthier alternative! Also another good meal for times of fasting! It s all about KEEPING THE TEMPLE IN SHAPE TO THE GLORY OF GOD! Grilled Red Potatoes and String Beans Ingredients: 2 cups red potatoes, unpeeled, quartered 1 1/2 cups fresh green beans (ends trimmed) 2 tbsp. olive oil (divided use) 2 tsp. lemon pepper seasoning 2 tbsp. diced shallot (or sweet onion) 2 garlic cloves, minced 4 tbsp. butter salt & pepper, to taste Directions: Preheat gas or charcoal grill. In a bowl, combine one tablespoon of the olive oil with the red potatoes. Season with one teaspoon of lemon pepper seasoning and a sprinkling of salt and pepper. Stir to make sure all the potatoes are evenly coated. Line a grill pan with aluminum foil and spray with nonstick cooking spray (or use nonstick foil). The reason why you want to do this is later we will be adding butter and if butter drips into the grill, it can cause flare ups and you don t want to burn your potatoes. I forgot to add the foil in for these photos but it is an important step. You DO NOT need a grill pan for this. You can use a disposable aluminum pan or even heavy duty aluminum foil. Just make sure you also spray it with nonstick cooking spray just to make sure there is no sticking. Place potatoes in a grill pan in a single layer. Place pan on grill. Grill should be on a medium heat setting (about 350F-400F degrees.) Cover grill and cook potatoes for minutes, making sure to occasionally stir the potatoes for even cooking. Meanwhile, combine green beans with one tbsp. of olive oil, slices of butter, one tsp. of lemon pepper seasoning, diced shallots and minced garlic with a sprinkling of salt & pepper. Stir well. Add green beans to grill basket and stir gently. Cook for about 8-10 minutes longer (until potatoes and green beans are tender.) Then dig in! A taste of summer right here! I love to serve this with some grilled chicken too. COOK S NOTES: To make in the oven, preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Add the potatoes to a bowl and toss with ½ the olive oil and lemon pepper seasoning. Roast in pan (lined with nonstick aluminum foil) for 15 minutes. Add the green beans, garlic, shallots to same bowl and toss with remaining olive oil and lemon pepper. Add to the baking sheet with the potatoes. Roast together for 10 minutes. Melt the butter and coat the roasted vegetables with the butter mixture and serve. Enjoy! Okay WOG Family, men and women! Do you have a favorite recipe to share? Send it to sigdesign2008@aol.com... and don t forget a photo of yourself and/or your dish!
