2 Exodus Chapters Passover is the oldest and most important of Biblical festivals it is based primarily in Exodus 12:1-13:16 when the Israelites celebrated their deliverance by God from slavery in Egypt. 3 Passover Refers To The 10 th Plague The term Passover refers to the 10th and final plague God brought upon the Egyptians to persuade Pharaoh to let the people go, the death of all the first born. In obedience to God s instructions, those who believed placed the blood of a lamb on the doorposts of their homes, so that God would pass over those homes. From this, traditions began to form each year as they would celebrate the Feast of Passover to what it has become today.

4 Feast of Unleavened Bread No leaven is eaten for one week. Exodus 12: 31, 34, 39 Then he called for Moses and Aaron by night So the people took their dough before it was leavened, having their kneading bowls bound up in their clothes on their shoulders And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they had brought out of Egypt; for it was not leavened, because they were driven out of Egypt and could not wait, nor had they prepared provisions for themselves. (NKJ) Deuteronomy 16:3-4 "You shall eat no leavened bread with it; seven days you shall eat unleavened bread that you may remember the day in which you came out of the land of Egypt all the days of your life And no leaven shall be seen among you in all your territory for seven days (NKJ)

5 Spring Cleaning Preparation begins with a thorough cleaning of the home. This cleaning includes removing all leaven from the home. Putting them outside the home. Final search for leaven the day before Passover. Some leaven, of course, is hidden so the children can find it. Leaven found in this last search, is burned outside, in a burning barrel. For the next seven days, no food with leaven is eaten.

6 The Seder Table The dining room table is set for dinner Bowl of salt water Two Candles and a method to light them Wine glass at each place setting for wine or juice Wine or grape juice Parsley sprigs (so each has one) Bowl of Charoset (sweet apple mixture) Bowl of Horseradish Three Matzah (unleavened bread) Lamb shank Haggadah for each person Many features of today s Seder were already present in Jesus day, as in Matthew 26 and Luke 22:14-20 reveal.

8 Four Cups Four cups of juice are also part of the ceremony of the Seder. Each cup represents one of four promises God made in Exodus 6: 6-7. Exodus 6:6-7 "Therefore say to the children of Israel: 'I am the LORD; I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, I will rescue you from their bondage, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. 'I will take you as My people, and I will be your God. Then you shall know that I am the LORD your God who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. (NKJ)
