1 AT WHITE OAK GROVE MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH Cory A. Graves, Pastor 2600 Assembly Road October 2012 COMMENTS FROM THE COMMITTEE Dream Day I have friends who run an orphanage in a very poor nation. Every Friday, they go down to the slums and take the children to the beach. They call it Dream Day. As the children plan in the sand and water, as they look at the beautiful ocean and watch the magnificent sunsets, they talk to them about how God knew them before they were formed in their mother s womb, how they have seeds of greatness on the inside. The speak vision into them. Now, they re finding that these children from the slums are overcoming incredible odds, getting scholarships to colleges, breaking out of poverty, becoming leaders in the community. Scripture tells us that when people don t have a revelation of God s love and His Word, ultimately, they perish. It doesn t say where there is no money, there is no opportunity, where there is no talent people perish. What limits us is a lack of vision and understanding about God s plan for our lives. Today, I encourage you to let God s Word shape your vision of the future. Let today be your dream day. Set aside the cares of the world. Set aside distractions and worries and look to Jesus, the Author and Finisher of your faith. Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. Proverbs 29:18 Mission Statement To be a united body of baptized believers committed to the cause of Jesus Christ; White Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church, reaching out to those souls who do not know Jesus as their personal Savior. A Bible believing, Bible preaching, Bible teaching church growing in the knowledge of God s word, exemplifying that knowledge as we walk in faith and confidence trusting God for who HE is. Vision Statement White Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church, a church destined to be a unified body of believers, instructed by the word of God, led by the spirit of God, changed by the love of God. STUDENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS Brice Williams, son of Tina and Terrell Williams was voted Freshman Class Representative at NC A &T Middle College. Brice also made A/B honor roll this quarter. Thomas Blackmon Deacon Thomas Blackmon was born on November 21st, in High Point, NC. He has been a White Oak Grove for about 39 years and has served with the Deacon Board, Music Ministry, Choir, Male Chorus, and the Men s Ministry. Deacon Blackmon is the husband of Barbara Blackmon and they have 3 children: Darrell, Thomas A., and Tamara. He was educated at William Penn High School in High Point, NC and is retired. Deacon Blackmon is a veteran of the US Army and served in the Vietnam War. His hobbies include music, bowling, and photography. When asked about his favorite scripture, Deacon Blackmon said Psalm 24:8: Who is the King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. He also states, I love God, my family, and church family. I believe that everything that happens is God s Plan. WOG Health Fair Miles Williams, son of Tina and Terrell Williams made A/B honor roll. Miles is a 6th grader who attends Aycock Middle School in the Spanish Immersion Program. A journey, really. For you to discover who God meant when he meant you. What does it mean to be a woman? What is my calling in life? What does God value? What does He want from me? What do I want? And is that okay? We are not carbon copies of each other. Not at all. God loves diversity and he has fashioned each one of us uniquely and well. But it is a very good thing to know that we are not alone on this journey of life; we have much more in common with each othersimply because we are women-than we don t. We share more than most of us realize.

3 For instance, we have a feminine heart. We have to start there, because as the Scriptures tell us, the heart is the center of it all. I didn't know the combination, but our clergyman offered to give it a try. Father Jack placed his fingers on the lock's dial and raised his eyes heavenward for a moment. Then he confidently spun the dial and opened the lock. Seeing how impressed I was with this demonstration of faith, he smiled and confided, "The numbers are written on the ceiling." A small child with a bad cough was taken by her parents to a hospital emergency room. A nurse, examining the child's lungs with a stethoscope, told the child, "I have to see if Barney is in there." "I have Jesus in my heart," the child replied. "Barney is on my underwear. Adam was spending the day naming all the creatures in the garden when he realized he was alone as a human being. Then came the very last creature and he named it "frog". He spoke to the frog in his loneliness and asked it if it had any ideas as to how he could not be so lonely. To Adam's surprise, the frog opened it's mouth and replied, "Rib-It!", then the rest was history... A woman approached the minister after the sermon, and thanked him for his discourse. "I found it so helpful," she said. The minister replied: "I hope it will not prove as helpful as the last sermon you heard me preach." "Why, what do you mean?" asked the astonished woman. "Well," said the minister, "that sermon lasted you three months." My son came home from school one day, with a smirk upon his face He decided he was smart enough to put me in my place. "Guess what I learned in Civics Two, that's taught by Mr. Wright? It's all about the laws today, The 'Children's Bill of Rights'." "It says I need not clean my room, don't have to cut my hair No one can tell me what to think, or speak, or what to wear." "I have freedom from religion, and regardless what you say I don't have to bow my head, and I sure don't have to pray." "I can wear earrings if I want, and pierce my tongue and nose I can read and watch just what I like, and get tattoos from head to toe." "And if you ever spank me, I'll charge you with a crime I'll back up all my charges with the marks on my behind." "Don't you ever touch me, my body's only for my use Not for your hugs and kisses, that's just more child abuse." "Don't preach about your morals like your Mama did to you That's nothing more than mind control, and it's illegal too!" "Mom, I have these children's rights, so you can't influence me Or I'll call Children's Services Division, better known as C.S.D." Of course my first instinct was to toss him out the door But the chance to teach him a lesson made me think a little more. I mulled it over carefully, I couldn't let this go A smile crept upon my face, he's messing with a pro. The next day I took him shopping at the local Goodwill Store I told him, "Pick out all you want, there's shirts & pants galore." "I've called and checked with C.S.D. who said they didn't care If I bought you K-Mart shoes instead of those Nike Airs." "And I've cancelled that appointment to take your driver's test The C.S.D. is unconcerned, so I'll decide what's best." "I said no time to stop and eat, or pick up stuff to munch

7 And tomorrow you can start to learn to make your own sack lunch." "Just save the raging appetite and wait till dinner time We're having liver and onions, a favorite dish of mine." He asked "Can I please rent a movie to watch on my VCR?" "Sorry, but I sold your TV for new tires on my car." "I also rented out your room, you'll take the couch instead All the C.S.D. requires is a roof for over your head." "Your clothing won't be trendy now, and I'll choose what we eat That allowance that you used to get will buy me something neat." "I'm selling off your jet ski, dirt-bike and roller blades Check out the 'Parents Bill of Rights,' it's in effect today!" "Hey hot shot, are you crying, and why are you on your knees? Are you asking God to help you out instead of C.S.D..?" Are You at Risk for Breast Cancer? All women are at risk for breast cancer. You are more at risk: 1. If you have a history of cancer in your family. 2. If you are overweight. 3. If you are over the age of If you eat a diet high in processed foods and low in fruits and vegetables. 1. You should eat a healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables. 2. Maintain a healthy weight. To determine your healthy weight, calculate your BMI Body Mass Index and check to see if your BMI is in the healthy weight range. 3. You can protect yourself from cancer by doing monthly self-exams on your breasts, searching for lumps or changes in you breast tissue. 4. You can also protect yourself through annual professional breast exams (by your primary physician or obstetrician). 5. You can protect yourself by getting annual mammograms once you turn 40. 9 So many people today are stuck in a rut. It s not because they aren t talented; it s not because they don t have God s favor, but it s because their vision is limited. They can t see beyond their circumstances. They don t see themselves accomplishing their dreams, being promoted or living healthier. They just see more of the same because it s what they are focused on. What you see is what you re going to move toward. The truth is, we all have vision. Every one of us has a picture in our mind of our self, our family and our future. The question is: What does your picture look like? Do you see yourself rising higher, overcoming obstacles, living an abundant life? Do you dare to dream beyond your circumstances? Today, why don t you change your focus? Lift your eyes beyond your circumstances. Get a higher dream, a greater vision for your life. See yourself the way God sees you and move forward in the abundant life He has prepared for you! A PRAYER FOR TODAY Father, today I choose to lift my eyes off my circumstances and look to You.
