1 AT WHITE OAK GROVE MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH Cory A. Graves, Pastor 2600 Assembly Road July 2013 COMMENTS FROM THE COMMITTEE Intercessory prayer is a special type of prayer that releases power on behalf of others. 1. As you grow in the practice of prayer, you will begin moving past praying for your own needs to praying for the needs of others. There are countless situations and individuals that are dependent on your prayers. 2. In intercessory prayer, you stand in the gap between God and the person or situation for which you are praying (Ezek. 22:30; Isa. 59:16). You release spiritual power on their behalf. 3. There are three levels of prayer when praying for others. a. Sometimes you pray with someone In this case, you identify with the other person in his request to the Father and agree with him in faith that his prayer will be answered (Matt. 18:19). b. Sometimes you pray for someone When you pray for someone, you are taking more of the initiative. You identify the need of the other person and bring him into the presence of God through prayer (James 5:16). c. Sometimes you pray against something This type of prayer is a resistance against the spiritual realities of evil (Eph. 6:10-18). It taps into the heavenly realm and topples demonic strongholds. In closing, this poem on Intercessory Prayer: When you come to the edge Of all the light You ve known. And are about to step off Into the darkness of the Unknown, Faith is knowing one of two things will happen, There will be something solid to stand on or You will be taught how to fly. SHOES IN CHURCH I showered and shaved.i adjusted my tie. I got there and sat.in a pew just in time. Bowing my head in prayer.as I closed my eyes. I saw the shoe of the man next to me.touching my own. I sighed. With plenty of room on either side.i thought, Why must our soles touch? It bothered me, his shoe touching mine.but it didn t bother him much. A prayer began, Our Father.I thought, This man with shoes, has no pride. They re dusty, worn, and scratched. Even worse, there are holes on the side! Thank You for blessings the prayer went on. The shoe man said. A quiet Amen. I tried to focus on the prayer.but my thoughts were on his shoes again. Aren t we supposed to look our best.when walking through that door? Well, this certainly isn t it I thought, glancing toward the floor. Then the prayer was ended. And the songs of praise began. The shoe man was certainly loud.sounding proud as he sang. His voice lifted the rafters.his hands were raised high. The Lord could surely hear The shoe man s voice from the sky. Shoes in Church continued on back page. We dedicate this issue in loving memory of Sis. Darthula Jordan, a beloved member of the White Oak Grove Family for 79 years.

2 SENIOR SPOTLIGHT Blood Drive I give to help those who need blood and other medical supplements. Carl so others can live. One pint of blood can help so many mothers. I m glad I am able to help out. J. Stowe because my son has sickle cell disease and people donate bone marrow to help kids like him, so I want to be able to do the right thing and help someone else. Derick S. so that others may have a chance at life!! Nicole Pictures from the 2013 Blood Drive Anger Lee Foskey Sister Anger Lee Foskey continues to support White Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where she joined more than four decades ago, although she is currently living away. She served many years as the Junior Teacher in the Sunday school and as a member of the church s choirs. Sister Foskey retired from the Guilford County Schools as a dedicated Teacher s Assistant, helping to mold the educational experiences of children. Sister Anger Lee Foskey is the only daughter of Frank and Hattie Foskey, who recently (February 1, 2013) celebrated their 67 th wedding anniversary. Sis. Foskey is currently their primary caregiver and is providing care for them in Aurora. Like her parents, she shows strong faith and involvement in her church and knows that this must be an integral part of life. Frank and Hattie Foskey There is no doubt that the Foskeys, like all married couples, have seen some good times and some rough times. However, through their unwavering faith in God, they have weathered the storms together for more than a half century.

Aycock Street ISN T IT FUNNY Moving a Mobile Home A man living in New Jersey had just bought a new mobile home and learnt that he had to pick it up from the other side of New York and drive it all the way back. He realized that to do so he would have to pass right through Manhattan, a very serious driving risk, especially with a slow mobile home. So he decided to pop up to Manhattan and ask someone when would be the best time to travel without getting his new acquisition demolished. The first person he came across was a local policeman and knew he could do no better. When asked, the policeman replied that a Sunday would be the best time to travel at about 7 a.m. Why that time? the man asked. Well, replied the policeman, all the Jews are playing golf and all the Catholics are at Mass. But what about the Protestants? Oh, they are all asleep at that time of a Sunday morning. Taking the policeman s advice he set out and was traveling through Manhattan at about 7:00 a.m. when WHAM!! His mobile home was smashed from the rear. He got out and surveyed the damage and then found out it was a Seventh Day Adventist late for work! Too Many Confessions An old priest was getting sick and tired of all the people in his parish who kept confessing adultery. One Sunday in the pulpit he said, If I hear one more person confess to adultery, I ll quit! Everyone liked him, so the parishioners came up with a code word. Someone who had committed adultery would say they have fallen. This seemed to satisfy the old priest and things went well, until the priest died at a ripe old age. About a week later, the new priest visited the Mayor of the town and seemed very concerned. The priest said, You have to do something about the sidewalks in town. When people come into the confessional, they keep talking about having fallen. The Mayor started to laugh, realizing that no one had told the new priest about the code word. The priest shook and accusing finger at the mayor and said, I don t know what you re laughing about. Your wife fell three times this week. The Offering The young members of the family had been taught to be punctilious in contributing to the collection at church. One Sunday morning, when the boxes were being passed, James, aged six, ran his eye over those in the pew and noticed that a guest of his sister had no coin in her hand. Where is your money? he whispered. She answered that she hadn t any. But James was equal to the emergency: Here, take mine, he directed. That ll pay for you. I ll get under the seat. Which he did.

6 Be Transformed Pictures from the 2013 Car Show The word transform in the original Bible language is metamorpho. It s where we get our word metamorphosis. When a caterpillar changes from a lowly worm into a beautiful butterfly, it is called metamorphosis. The caterpillar starts out as possibly one of the most unattractive insects. It s very plain, nothing special about it. But God destined the caterpillar to go through a transformation. It goes from being one of the most ordinary creatures to one of the most beautiful. It no longer has to crawl on the ground it is transformed into a beautiful butterfly. Know today that as you meditate on the Word, as you pray and worship and surrender every area of your life to God, He is doing a work in you. He is transforming you from the inside out. Trust Him and stay in the process knowing that He has great things in store for your future. Father, than You for the work You are doing in my life. I surrender every part of my being to You. Thank You for transforming me as I keep my heart and mind stayed on You in Jesus name. Amen. - Joel & Victoria Osteen Shoes in Church continued. It was time for the offering And what I threw in was steep. I watched as the shoe man reached.into his pockets so deep. O saw what was pulled out What the shoe man put in. Then I heard a soft clink as when silver hits tin. The sermon really bored me.to tears, that s no lie. It was the same for the shoe man For tears fell from his eyes. At the end of the service As is custom here. We must greet new visitors, And show them good cheer. But I felt moved somehow. And wanted to meet the shoe man. So after the closing prayer.i reached over and shook his hand. He was old and his skin was dark And his hair was truly a mess. But I thanked him for coming.for being our guest He said, My name is Charlie I m glad to meet you, my friend. There were tears in his eyes.but he had a large, wide grin. Let me explain, he said.wiping tears from his eyes. I ve been coming here for months.and you re the first to say Hi. I know my appearance.is not like the rest. But I really do try.to always look my best. I always clean and polish my shoes Before my very long walk. But by the time I get here.they re dirty and dusty, like chalk. My heart filled with pain..and I swallowed to hide my tears. As he continued to apologize.for daring to sit so near. He said, When I get here.i know I must look a sight. But I thought if I could touch you.then our souls might unite. I was silent for a moment.knowing whatever was said Would pale in comparison.i spoke from my heart, not my head. Oh, you ve touched me, I said. And taught me, in part That the best of any man.is what is found in his heart. The rest, I thought.this shoe man will never know. Like just how thankful I really am,.that his dirty old shoe touched my soul. You are special to me and you have made a difference in my life. I respect you and truly cherish you.
